Leaning Tower
Part 1 – Landing in 1178
Inside the TARDIS, a panel from the console was on the floor. The Doctor was repairing machinery in the console and he noticed Clara was reading a book.
"What are you reading?" the Doctor asked.
"The Hobbit," answered Clara. "it's a story about a little man who helps a bunch of dwarfs to..."
"Yes I know Clara, the bit about the ring was my idea."
Surprised, Clara said, "What?!"
"I helped him write it you know, I introduced him to C.S. Lewis too."
"You are just full of surprises aren't you Doctor"
The Doctor only smiled in return.
Clara watched the Doctor place the panel back on the console and he pressed a few buttons.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"The year one thousand one hundred seventy-eight," the Doctor responded. "There's something in that time era that I need to find."
"And what exactly do you need to find?" Clara asked.
Before he could answer, they both felt a jolt. Clara quickly grabbed hold of a rail behind the chair she was sitting in. The Doctor struggled to maintain balance.
Outside, the TARDIS materialized in mid-air, and flew uncontrollably.
Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor managed to push a button and the jolting stopped. The Doctor and Clara took a moment to catch their breath.
"What happened?" Clara asked.
"I don't know," answered the Doctor, "but I think we hit something before we landed."
They exited the TARDIS and looked up to see what the TARDIS had hit.
"Oops"
"Doctor, is that the Leaning Tower of Pisa?" Clara asked.
"Yes... Clara, I don't think it was leaning before we arrived," the Doctor answered.
Clara's expression showed that she was both surprised and amused.
"I always wondered how it got that way," she said with a laugh.
"Well anyway, follow me, I have to find something" the Doctor said as he pulled out his psychic paper.
"O come on Doctor, can't we take a look at the tower"
"Maybe later, but right now we have to go"
"What do you have to find that's so important anyway?" Clara questioned as she followed the Doctor away from the Tower of Pisa.
"It's a box," the Doctor said, distracted by his psychic paper.
"A box, that's what you brought us here for."
"It's a special box called the Infinity Cube, it's filled with dangerous amounts of time energy, if someone like let's say the Daleks, or the Weeping Angels, were to get a hold of it, the results would be catastrophic."
"What makes you so sure it's here?" Clara asked.
"River sent me a message on my psychic paper, she said she put it here for me to pick up," the Doctor answered.
"How could she have sent you a message if she died?" Clara asked.
"She left it here before she died. The message I got contains the coordinates to the location of the cube," the Doctor answered.
"But why in this particular time era?" Clara asked.
"I don't know, I suppose she might have known that I needed to come here and hit the Tower of Pisa" the Doctor responded, then stopped and checked his psychic paper.
"It should be right here," he said.
"I don't see anything," Clara said as she looked at the ground.
The Doctor knelt down and scanned the area of the ground with his sonic screwdriver. He put his screwdriver away and moved dirt aside from the ground to reveal a stone-shaped object. The Doctor pulled it and a door in the ground opened to reveal stairs, leading into a dark hallway underground.
Clara stared into the darkness underground. "So I guess that's where this cube is," she said.
"The coordinates lead to somewhere down there," the Doctor said, standing up.
-----------------------
The Doctor held his sonic screwdriver in front of him, lighting the path in front of him with a dim green light. Clara followed closely behind.
"What is this place?" Clara asked as she looked around at the dark tunnel walls, which were covered in strange works of art.
"I don't know," he said, "but that hardly matters as long as we find the cube down here."
They stopped at a dead end and the Doctor scanned the wall with his sonic screwdriver.
"There must be something in here to open this wall," he said.
As he was doing this, Clara noticed a dusty painting on the floor, leaning against the wall. She wiped enough dust off the painting to reveal a Weeping Angel, covering its eyes. Clara stared at the painting. The Doctor rubbed dust off the wall to reveal a very small hole. He used his screwdriver to unlock the mechanism from within the hole and the wall opened.
Clara turned to see the wall had opened. She followed the Doctor through the tunnel. And unbeknownst to Clara, the Weeping Angel in the painting uncovered its eyes.
They walked into an open circle-shaped room. At the end of the room was a box the size of a cube that sat on a large metal ledge in the room.
The Doctor pushed a small metal button near the doorway to the room and a fire lit, spreading across a metal ledge throughout the room.
Using the screwdriver, the Doctor opened the box, it was empty.
"There's nothing in there," Clara said.
"Somebody must have come here before we did and took it," the Doctor realized.
"How would anyone else know that River put a cube in a hidden underground tunnel?" Clara asked.
"I don't know, it doesn't make sense." the Doctor answered as he looked around the room, scanning with his sonic screwdriver.
Clara walked back outside the room and noticed that the Angel was no longer in the painting.
The Doctor pointed his screwdriver towards the box. "There's some kind of energy coming from the wall behind the box," he said.
Clara stared at the painting, confused. "Doctor, there was a Weeping Angel in this painting and now it's gone."
"Say that again," the Doctor replied, distracted.
"This painting... there was a Weeping Angel in it and now it's gone"
"A Weeping Angel in a painting?" the Doctor said as he walked to where Clara was.
"But it's just a painting. How could it move?" Clara wondered.
"What holds the image of an angel becomes itself an angel, in other words, the angel came out of the painting."
"But that's impossible Doctor, a painting can't come to life."
"You've traveled with me a long time Clara, you should know better than to think anything impossible. But right now the only thing that matters is that we find the weeping angels and stop them from opening that cube."
Suddenly the fire was blown out and everything went dark.
"Who blew out the fire?!" Clara exclaimed.
The Doctor's sonic screwdriver lit up the room.
Before either of them could speak, the angel suddenly appeared and then the room went dark again.
