a glimpse into the past

It happens every night, always the same. I'm standing in front of my family home in the center of the Pepin Garden. This has been our family home for generations. It's located just to the South of the rows of corn and tucked in right beside the yummy carrots. In my dream it's foggy, it's always foggy; so foggy that I can barely see my paw in front of my face. I squint and strain to make out the carved wooden door that my great grandfather made. I slowly turn the knob, my heart beating wildly. I step inside to find the place ransacked. Tables are overturned, the family portrait is on the floor- broken into many pieces.... And there is blood. Blood droplets scatter the white floor and lead ominously towards my parents bedroom. My breath feel tight in my chest as I turn the knob. And then..... I wake up.

On this particular morning, I brush my long ears and quickly eat my breakfast before hopping out of the door. I waved to my neighbor, Turtle, before quickly hopping to the pond to meet my best friend,Cat. Cat love the pond because he likes to chase the ducks and roll in the bushes of colorful forget-me- nots. Once, we even picked a bouquet of them and took them to our favorite teacher at school. But that wasn't the plan to for today.
Cat and I rolled in the flower bushes, having a great time - until we bumped into something hard, making us both yelp. We quickly scrambled to see what we had bumped into. A low growl came from under the largest bush as a scraggly red fox crawled out into view. He was large - about the size of a dog! He had razor sharp teeth that glistened in the morning light. His fur was naturally red, but there were also some stains of a deeper red on his face and chest. I started to contemplate what the stains were when I was quickly snapped back to reality when the fox took a step towards us. Cat and I ran for our lives. We ran towards my house as fast as our paws would carry us. I dared not glance back as we ran, but I knew that the fox was very close behind . I could hear his paws hit the ground seconds behind me. Cat, being the cat that he is, scurried up the first tree that he came to, leaving me to outrun the fox on my own. I reached my house and as soon as I opened the door, my heart stopped in my chest. I see the tables are overturned, the family portrait lays broken on the floor... and the blood. There, on the floor, are the droplets of blood that haunted my dreams every night. I yell out for my parents but no answers. I follow the droplets of blood to their bedroom door and fling it open without hesitation. I'm terrified as to what I will find. There, in my parent's bed, I see blood and bit of fur, ripped clothing, even my mother's jewelry. I hear a heartbroken scream that sounds as if it is coming from everywhere at once. It took me a second to understand that the scream was actually coming from me. I take a step towards the bed and I feel warm breath on the back of my neck. I turn around quickly and find the large fox standing in the doorway behind me. 'Rabbit is my favorite food and two of them are never enough." The Fox's eyes have an evil glint as those words pass over those razor sharp teeth. Before I can make any movement, he lunges.
