CHASER

I run along the thin ribbon like track. Not sure where I'm going, or where I'm at. The only thing on my mind is to get as much distance between me and my chaser as possible.

I'm panting, now that I've been running for so long. My legs ache and my head throbs every time my feet hit the hard ground beneath my worn shoes. But still, I don't stop. Still, I just keep going. Keep running.

The bush around me is full of tall pine trees. I slow from a sprint into a jog and take a deep breath through my nostrils. My lungs are instantly full of that sweet smell of the pine needles. They have just fallen. Come to a complete stop. Not moving anymore. I wish that could be me lying there. Not moving. Not thinking. But instead I'm still running.

The nightmare of what's chasing me makes my jog quicken back into a sprint. Keep running. Keep moving. I tell myself frantically! Keep running, is the only clear through inside my foggy brain. Fractured by fatigue and the living nightmare that is behind me.

Wait . . . I suddenly stop . . . What is behind me? That's when something pushes me to the ground. I somehow open my eyes, that the impact made me shut so tightly, and realize then, that it was my pillow. In my bed. In my bedroom. The whole thing turned out to be a dream. Wait? A nightmare.
