4 - First Date
Gabe was sitting on one of the benches near the front of the college Sam had texted him the address of. The area he was in was just outside the dorm rooms, it was a nice little section with a fountain and everything.
He'd gotten there a bit early with Charlie pretty much throwing him out of his own house after trying to yet again teach him the basics of sign language.
Gabe was watching the fountain with interest when he saw Sam and Kevin walking towards him. They seemed to be having a form of argument in sign language. Sam stopped when they got to Gabe and Kevin just sighed.
"Nice to see you Gabe," he said. "Look after Sam would you?"
"No I'm going to murder him in an alley," Gabe said, rolling his eyes. "Of course I will." Sam chuckled lightly, signing something to Kevin.
"Dude I don't even," Kevin said, shaking his head at Sam. "How can you look so happy but say things so opposite?"
Sam smirked and signed something else. Gabe just stood there awkwardly, looking between them.
"You know what I'll just leave," Kevin said. "See ya guys." Sam waved and then turned to Gabe and waved at him.
"Heya Samsquatch," Gabe said with a smile. Sam returned the smile and then ruffled Gabe's hair to Gabe's protest. Gabe pouted as he tried to fix his hair and Sam was laughing. "Here I am taking you out and you just mess up my amazing hair."
Sam raised an eyebrow, glancing up at Gabe's hair.
"Oh you know it's amazing," Gabe said. "So, shall we go?" Sam nodded with a smile, and gestured for Gabe to lead the way.
"Okay so I figured we could just walk there," Gabe said as they walked off campus. "Since it's really not that far of a walk." Sam nodded. "Cassie says I could use the exercise with all the candy I eat."
Sam laughed, a sound that Gabe was slowly starting to love the sound of. Gabe smiled up at him, and Sam returned the smile. They walked the rest of the way in silence, well obviously Sam did.
"Okay so this is it," Gabe said as they stopped outside a diner on a corner. "Doesn't look like much but the food is amazing." Sam was just looking at the place, before pulling out his phone and typing something.
My brother loves this place, our dad's friends with the owners.
"Your dad knows Ellen?" Gabe said. "Huh small world. She's great though." Sam nodded, and they walked inside.
"Oh god Gabriel what poor idiot have you dragged along with you this time?" Jo asked as he walked in.
"That's Jo," Gabe said to Sam, who just waved at Jo. Jo raised an eyebrow, but Ellen walked out before she could say anything.
"Gabe have you terrorised another poor kid into going out with you?" she asked.
"Oh come on guys, I don't..." Gabe sighed. Ellen laughed.
"We know, we're only teasing," she said. "And...Sam Winchester? God I haven't seen you since you were shorter than Gabriel. And that's saying something." Sam laughed and hesitantly signed something. Ellen smiled and replied while Jo just looked at Gabe and shrugged.
"I assume you know what they're saying," Jo said.
"Uh...not exactly," Gabe said.
"Wait but you and him..."
"We're figuring that out."
Jo just shook her head. "Well I can only say good luck."
"Okay we'll stop disturbing you two," Ellen said, leading the two of them to a table and giving Sam a menu. "Gabe I know what you want, Sam?"
Sam quickly glanced at the menu and pointed something out to Ellen. Ellen nodded, and wrote it down, before leaving the two alone.
"So Sammy," Gabe said. Sam glared. "Alright alright, Samsquatch not Sammy. Obviously we have a communication problem here but who cares, I can talk enough for both of us." Sam chuckled. "So seeing as we met recently, let's get to know each other. Anything you want to know?"
Sam pulled out his phone again and typed something in, before sliding it across the table to Gabe.
You mentioned Cassie earlier, who is she?
Gabe chuckled slightly. "For one, Cassie is a nickname. His name is Castiel." Sam realized the mistake and gave Gabe an apologetic look. "It's fine, his reaction would...he would just be confused, he's like that." Gabe paused. "But yeah, Cas is my younger brother. He's too innocent for this world."
Ellen walked over then with their food. Sam had a salad, and Gabe had some form of sweet desert thing, obviously. Sam just shook his head with a smile as he saw that.
"First thing about me," Gabe said. "I like sweet things. Lollies, sugar. And you eat moose food...which makes sense coz you're a moose." Gabe clicked his fingers suddenly. "Samoose. Yep that's your name now." Sam was just listening with a smile, laughing quietly.
As they ate their lunch, Sam typed out something on his phone again.
Got any other siblings?
"You don't want to know," Gabe said immediately. "I seriously...I'll list them off. Castiel, Balthazar, Anna, Samandriel, Raphael, Lucifer—" The look on Sam's face cut Gabe short, he looked so shocked at Luci's name. "Yeaah..." Gabe said slowly. "I have a brother called Lucifer...all angel names. Oh and Michael will be my brother soon, he's dating Satan." Sam was still shocked at the Satan thing before just shaking his head incredulously. Gabe laughed. "I told you you didn't want to know."
Sam made a scoffing noise. He typed something out on his phone quickly, passing it to Gabe.
I have an older brother called Dean, he's a bit of a jerk and he's childish.
"Let me guess," Gabe said. "He's shorter than you." Sam laughed and nodded. "I'm pretty sure everyone's shorter than you." Sam just shook his head. "Oh really, how many people do you see on a daily basis that are taller than you?"
Sam paused for a moment, thinking. Then he just shrugged.
"Wow so helpful," Gabe said with a slight smile. Sam just shrugged again, smiling. "Siblings can be annoying sometimes, do you get that too?" Sam nodded quickly. "Of my six...they probably think I'm the worst."
Sam raised a questioning eyebrow at that. Gabe laughed softly.
"I don't think anyone has played more pranks and caused more chaos than what I've done to those guys," Gabe said with a fond smile. "They call me the Trickster because of it. This one time I took the door handle off all of their doors and locked the windows, they were trapped. Luci eventually kicked his door open but I'd covered our wooden floor in soap, he just fell over immediately."
Sam was laughing as Gabe told his story, and Gabe smiled over at him.
"Another time I may have put dye in Anna's shampoo. She's the only sister, and she kinda freaked out."
Sam laughed again and typed something out.
Dean put nair in my shampoo once, it was horrible.
"Please tell me you got him back," Gabe said, smiling. "I need a partner in crime." Sam just winked at Gabe. "Oh come on you need to tell me what you did."
Sam typed something out again. You ever superglued someone's hand to a beer bottle?
Gabe laughed. "Oh that's great, good job Samantha."
Sam glared at the nickname and Gabe just smirked at him.
They finished their lunch and Ellen came over.
"Anything else for you boys?" she asked.
"Sam?" Gabe asked and Sam shook his head. "Well I'm good too, so no I guess." Ellen nodded.
"Now as much as I love you two, you still gotta pay," Ellen said. Gabe laughed and pulled out money before Sam could even start to protest.
"Hey I asked you out," Gabe said noticing Sam about to object. "Therefore I pay."
"Sam, keep him," Ellen said and Sam laughed, nodding.
After Gabe paid and as they were walking out, Gabe smirked up at Sam.
"So, keeping me huh?" he asked. Sam blushed, actually blushed and shoved Gabe playfully. Gabe chuckled. "I won't complain if you do." Sam just blushed more. "So, do you want to go somewhere else now?"
Sam nodded, smiling.
"Where? Mall, park, any other random place that isn't actually cliché?"
Sam just shrugged.
"Okay, park's closest so let's go there," Gabe said, walking in the direction of the park with Sam beside him.
When they got to the park, they found a nice place on the grass to sit and sat there. Gabe being the child sat cross legged and faced Sam. And we're going to switch over to Sam's thoughts here because reasons.
"So Samsquatch," Gabe said. "You're in college right?" Sam nodded. "What are you studying?"
Sam quickly typed out his response. Psychology. Was going to do law but you know, talking.
"Oh so you chose them because of the helping people aspect?" Gabe asked and Sam nodded, glad that Gabe could pick up on things quickly.
What about you, did you go to college? Sam typed out on his phone.
"Yeah," Gabe said. "Graduated last year. It was an art course, was fun."
What type of art? Sam typed, getting slightly annoyed at the need to type things. He'd talk if he could...
"Usually painting," Gabe said with a smile. "I always liked painting. I could probably make a living off it now if I tried, but I'm just kinda having a lazy year after finishing school."
Sam nodded in understanding, before slightly glaring at his phone. Gabe noticed this.
"Sorry about the whole not knowing sign language thing," Gabe said and Sam tried to wave it off. "No really, it's not really fair on you."
You tried, Sam typed.
"Apparently not hard enough," Gabe muttered quietly. He looked so sad and annoyed with himself, Sam frowned at him. He reached out to put a comforting hand on Gabe's shoulder and Gabe gave him a small smile.
"Hey just so I don't say anything inappropriate," Gabe said. "Do you mind talking about your muteness?"
Sam shook his head. Dean and Kevin joke about it all the time, it's fine, really, he typed out again as Gabe waited patiently for him to finish.
"Is asking why pushing it too far?" Gabe asked.
Sam tilted his head slightly, thinking. Dammit this idiot was too nice, it was messing with his head. Sam shook his head again.
It's a social anxiety thing, he typed out. Gabe nodded. Sam typed something again, still getting sort of annoyed at it. I want to talk to you, I actually really do...I just can't...
"Hey it's okay," Gabe said. "I don't mind. Besides, normal is boring."
Sam smiled at Gabe, and couldn't help feeling bad for not being able to talk to him. Because here Gabe was, trying so hard to communicate with Sam, to give him equal say in the conversation. And Sam couldn't talk to him because of a stupid anxiety thing.
He remembered something Kevin had said, about how it was an anxiety towards how people reacted, and that maybe if it was something Gabe already knew, it wouldn't effect Sam as much.
Sam took a deep breath, thinking for half a second.
Back to Gabe's thoughts for this part. Gabe was watching Sam as he looked like he was deciding something.
"Well...anybody remotely interesting is mad in some way or another," Sam said quietly, his voice kind of shaky from a lack of use.
Gabe just froze for a second. Because Sam had said that, aloud. Actually words forming from his mouth.
And that voice, even if it sounded weak at the time was one of the best things Gabe had ever heard.
It took Gabe another moment to register what Sam had said, and he blinked back to Sam who was looking at him nervously and almost scared, worried.
"Seven," Gabe said, trying to get over the shock of what had happened. "Uh...yeah that was seven, the seventh doctor, he said that." Gabe smiled as he realized what Sam was doing. "Why Samsquatch, are you speaking to me in quotes?"
Relief spread through Sam's face as he nodded with a small smile. Sam had been so scared in that moment, he'd felt vulnerable as Gabe froze up for a moment. But the fact that it was a quote, something he knew Gabe would know, stopped the anxiety from hitting before Gabe could reply.
"Does speaking in quotes help?" Gabe asked Sam, who typed on his phone again. Gabe couldn't deny the hint of disappointment that Sam didn't keep talking, but then again finding a quote for every single thing he wanted to say would be hard.
Yeah I think so, Sam said.
"Well I won't complain," Gabe said with a smile. "So long as I know the quotes."
Sam smirked. I guess we'll need to go out again so I can find out which fandoms you're in, he typed.
"Smooth, Samantha, smooth," Gabe said, chuckling lightly. "Do you need to be back soon?"
Sam looked at the time on his phone and his face fell, nodding.
"Well we should get going then," Gabe said, standing and holding his hand out to help Sam up. Sam took it, and when he was standing up neither of them released the grip. Gabe looked down at their hands before grinning at Sam sheepishly. Sam returned the smile, and they headed off towards the college with their hands linked.
