3 - Silence Isn't a Problem

Sam didn't see Gabriel for three days after their last meeting. When he did go to Fandomania, Gabe wasn't working. He'd looked around the place before getting bored and leaving, having not actually brought money to buy anything just because he only wanted to talk to Gabe.

Which was ridiculous, really. They'd talked twice. He couldn't actually seriously like the guy. Not yet at least. Which was why he wanted to talk to him more. Which would work if Gabe was actually at the one place Sam could find him.

It was a Saturday that day, Sam had no classes. Him and Kevin were out at that coffee place they always went to, talking in whatever sense Sam could.

"Have you seen Gabriel again?" Kevin asked.

Sam shook his head. He hasn't been working whenever I've gone.

"I could just ask Charlie when he works, they have the same shifts."

That would've been helpful a few days ago, Sam signed with a slight glare.

"Sorry dude," Kevin said with a small smile. "But I know Charlie's working today, so we could head over there now." Sam tried to ignore the way he knew he lit up and the idea of seeing Gabe again. He was too used to showing all his expressions so people would understand him, it was hard for him to hide anything now.

Kevin smiled at him. "You like him."

Have we not already established that? Several times?

"Yeah but I haven't seen you light up at the mention of someone since...never?"

Shut up.

"You shut up."

I don't really have a choice there do I?

Kevin chuckled. The two of them kept talking and finished their drinks, before walking out of the coffee shop and to the nearby fandom store.

When they walked in, Gabe was nowhere to be seen. Charlie was there however.

"Charlie what are you doing?" Kevin asked, looking at the mess Charlie was trying to fix.

"Some idiot," Charlie said. "Some short idiot, decided to ignore the fact that he's really short, and in trying to reach a shelf ended up grabbing onto the shelf and pulling it off the wall."

Sam looked at the shelf that was on the floor. Is Gabriel okay? he signed.

"Wow you don't even need to ask who it was," Charlie said, then added sarcastically, "What gave it away?"

"I'm not that damn short." Gabe walked in from the back room, holding an ice pack to his head.

"Tell that to the shelf," Charlie said, picking up another box. "Clean up the mess."

"Oh come on, I'm injured," Gabe said.

"And who's fault is that?" Charlie asked. Gabe rolled his eyes and moved to help pick up the boxes that had been on the shelf. Charlie left to serve customers and Kevin followed her, talking about a new episode of Sherlock.

Sam poked Gabe's shoulder to get his attention, then pointed to the ice pack with a questioning look.

"Shelf hit my head on the way down," Gabe said. "I'm fine, really." Sam just gave him a concerned look, before crouching to help pick up the boxes. Gabe gave him a small smile out of the corner of his eye.

Together they moved all the boxes out of the way and in a neat stack against the wall, and Sam picked up the fallen shelf, inspecting it.

You're going to need a new shelf, this is actually broken, he signed, forgetting that Gabe couldn't understand him.

"I'm going to assume you just said something about it being broken," Gabe said, looking at the spot Sam was looking at. Sam nodded. "I'll tell the manager, get them to sort it out."

Kevin and Charlie walked over in that moment, and Kevin looked between them.

You asked him out yet? Kevin signed to Sam. Charlie smirked slightly.

No shut up, Sam signed back.

I'm not talking, Kevin signed with a smirk.

"See this is why you should learn sign language," Charlie said to Gabe.

"You know I can't do languages," Gabe said, sighing.

Sam gave him a curious look. You tried to learn? he signed, and Kevin translated it for him.

"Yeah," Gabe said. "Tried. My mind can't comprehend it too well...sorry Sammy."

It's Sam, he signed with a bitch face. Kevin translated again and Gabe smirked.

"You can't control me," Gabe said and Sam just rolled his eyes. Kevin signed something to Charlie then, hidden from Sam. Sam watched with a curious look as they walked away, talking in hushed tones about something.

"They're acting very suspicious aren't they?" Gabe said, and Sam nodded in agreement. "Anyway Sam..." Gabe trailed off and Sam looked at him expectantly. "I was wondering...do you want to go out sometime? For lunch or something?" Gabe sounded hesitant, and almost nervous.

Sam smiled brightly and nodded, and Gabe's nervous expression lit up immediately.

"Okay cool, great," Gabe said excitedly. "You busy tomorrow?" Sam shook his head. "I know a diner place, we could have lunch there and maybe just hang out a bit afterwards?"

Sam smiled and nodded again, watching the happy spark in Gabe's eyes. A thought occurred to him, and he pulled out his phone, typing something in.

So is this as friends, or a date?

He passed it to Gabe and watched as he read the words on the screen. Gabe looked up at him, the nervousness returning.

"Well," Gabe said. "I uh, if you want it to be a date, that is what I was kinda implying..." Sam was just watching his sudden awkwardness with a smile. "So do you want it do be?" Sam nodded and Gabe smiled almost shyly at him.

You're adorable when you're awkward, Sam signed, only because he knew Gabe wouldn't actually be able to understand it. When Gabe gave him a look of confusion he only smirked.

"Well that's going to annoy me for the rest of eternity," Gabe said. "You cruel person." He looked down at Sam's phone in his hands, before doing something on it. When he passed it back Sam saw that he'd typed his phone number in. "Text me, I'll pick you up tomorrow." Sam nodded with a smile which Gabe returned, before walking back over to Charlie and Kevin.

"So," Charlie said. "How are you guys?"

"You two aren't subtle, you know that?" Gabe said, moving behind the counter to serve customers, since they were in fact still at work.

"Even if we were," Charlie said. "You'd both know what we were trying to do." Gabe rolled his eyes.

"Well we should get going," Kevin said. "See you guys later?"

"Obviously," Charlie said. Kevin waved and walked out the door. Sam gave Gabe a small smile before following.

"So?" Kevin asked when they were outside.

He asked me out, Sam signed. Kevin fist pumped the air.

"And so it sails," he said. "When?"

Tomorrow, Sam signed.

"So Gabe," Luci asked, sprawled across Gabe's couch. Cas had left, he didn't live that far away though so he could visit whenever he wanted. Lucifer and Michael were still just living in Gabe's house. "I heard you talked to this Sam person again."

"Have you been conspiring with Charlie?" Gabe asked, trying to find edible dinner in his kitchen.

"Of course," Luci said. "You asked him out?"

"Yeah," Gabe said. "We still have a bit of a lack of communication...we'll figure it out."

"More importantly," Luci said. "Where are you taking him?"

"Are you seriously about to give me date advice?"

"If you need it."

"I'm taking him to Ellen's diner. Didn't want to go too fancy or anything..."

"I approve, Luce don't even start," Michael said, walking into the room. Luci pouted at his boyfriend.

Gabe chuckled, before finding some microwavable food. "How long are you guys staying anyway?"

"We were going to leave tomorrow," Michael said before Luci could say anything. "Before Luce can destroy anything of yours. Or the two of you cause chaos."

"You're no fun Mikey," Luci said.

"I'm plenty fun," Michael said.

"Whatever helps you sleep at night."

"I know better things we could be doing at night."

"Okay guys, keep it until you're out of my house," Gabe said.

"Too late," Luci said with a smirk. Gabe gave him a mortified look as Michael rolled his eyes.

"He's lying Gabe," Michael said, helping Gabe make the dinner of microwaved food. "We haven't done anything."

"Well I mean we made out," Luci said. "Several times."

"Just...stop," Gabe said. "I don't want to hear it." Luci just smirked and looked very pleased with himself. Michael rolled his eyes at Luci.

"Really though Gabe," Michael said. "The communication problem is going to become a serious issue if you can't figure out how he can talk to you."

"Look it's fine," Gabe said. "We'll figure it out. And if he doesn't want to talk, fine. He probably has a reason."

"Just don't go through with this without letting him communicate anything to you," Michael said. "That won't end well."

"I know, I don't need to be lectured on this stuff," Gabe said. "I'm not a child."

"You wouldn't be able to tell from the way you act," Luci said, intently watching the food in the microwave.

"Same goes for you," Michael said to Luce, who sprang up when the microwave beeped.

Gabe just sighed slightly, before his phone went off in his pocket. It was a message from an unknown number.

Gabe opened the message and saw that it was from Sam, saying which college he was staying at and that he'd just meet Gabe out the front. Gabe smiled softly and saved the number under the name Samsquatch.

"Okay, you need to get ready."

"What, I can't go like this?"

Charlie just looked at Gabe with such a disappointed look. "You can't seriously...at least put some effort in."

They were in Gabe's apartment on Sunday morning. Michael and Lucifer had just left to go back home, saying they'd visit again some time. Or that maybe one of the other siblings were show up soon.

"I don't understand," Gabe said.

"Appearance Gabe," Charlie said. "Wear something nice." Gabe looked down at his clothes.

"What's wrong with this?" he asked.

"Those are the type of clothes you wear when you laze around," Charlie said, before pulling Gabe up and dragging him to his wardrobe. She started going through his stuff as Gabe just gave up trying to argue.

"Okay," Charlie said, pulling out black skinny jeans. "You can't look like you're going to way too much effort, but still need to look neat. So, jeans. And not just a loose shirt like the one you're wearing."

"Hey don't hate on the shirt," Gabe muttered, looking at the slightly too big band shirt he was wearing.

"The shirts great, just not good for going out places." She pulled out Gabe's favourite red button up shirt. "Wear this. And your usual jacket of course."

"Fine," Gabe said, grabbing the clothes and moving to the bathroom to get changed. When he came back out, Charlie was inspecting him.

"See, much better," she said. She threw his jacket at him, the usual green one he had everywhere. "Great first impression since he's only seen you in our work uniform."

"Okay," Gabe said slowly. He glanced down at his watch. An hour left.

"Now," Charlie said. "Communication."

"Everyone just loves bringing that up, don't they," Gabe said, rolling his eyes. "It'll be fine."

"If you say so," Charlie said. "I still think you should learn sign language."

"I tried," Gabe said, sighing and walking into his living room. "I just...can't."

"And Sam just can't talk," Charlie said. "Great combination."

"I can feel the sarcasm. Seriously, it'll be fine. I'm sure he knows ways to communicate other than sign language."

"I hope so or this ship is going to sink fast," Charlie muttered.

"Wow, such faith there."

"Yep, that's what I'm here for."

I spent most of the time writing this chapter just planning the next one...coz in the next one I get to introduce the whole quoting part of the story :D

If anyone has any great quote ideas from any fandoms, I'm open to ideas, I'm going to need a lot of quotes for this story...

It's turning into winter here and I don't like it...I like spring weather the best, hate the cold...daylight savings ended too so it gets darker a lot earlier, great -_-

*Gives everyone mudcake cupcakes*
