Chapter 3

I couldn't wait to call Kaitlyn. The meeting with Tyler hadn't gone bad but it certainly wasn't good. I was hoping she had had a better time than i did. "Hey." She said picking up. "Hi, so how did it go with Franklyn?" I asked jumping right into why i had called her.

"Weird, i went to his house ok and i don't know why but he wanted to show me what he had to work on for school. I said i wasn't going to his house but he insisted it was easier! Get this he was fine having a mentor i thought for sure he'd put up a fight." She said. "Right me too, so his house was...strange?" I asked.

"Not his house but his room was so weird. His walls were painted black who has black walls?" "I don't know..." "Anyways he had some of the WIERDEST things in jars. It was gross." "Ok that's his room how was he?" I asked. "I don't know. Not as weird as i thought he was. I think he just needs a bit of help in school and is just kind of misjudged what about your guy?"

"Tyler is not to happy to be spending his time with me, but i can't help it." I said. "I mean unless i just refuse to help him. But I'd never back down from a challenge." I said. "I'm sorry. He;s new maybe he needs friends?" "That's what I'm going with. We made plans to study this week. He wouldn't even let me pick him up, he doesn't have a car." I explained.

"You know how guys are." I could almost see her rolling her green eyes. "This may not be easy but I'm going to do it." "Yea my mom has already told me how proud of me she is that I'm helping what about yours?" She asked.

"Oh she's happy but you know Sarah is doing a 3k or 5k or whatever run for breast cancer. Along with all the volunteering and knitting." I said glumly. "So once again you're good but she's better?" She asking knowing. "Pretty much i don't know why i even bother sometimes it's never going to be good enough." I said

"Then stop trying to top her just..." "Be yourself. I know." "Well i wasn't going to say that but now that you mention it that's exactly what you should do." "Great oh and let me guess while I'm at it i need to loosen up right?" I asked getting agitated. I don't even know who i was most days.  The real me would care less but my mom likes it when we try hard so that's where were at.

"What's your deal?" Katlyn asked confused.  "Sorry Tyler said i needed to loosen up." I told her. "He would, we care about grades, and if we want to study on the weekends we can." She said defiantly. "Yes we can." I agreed. "But i guess we could loosen up too, I'm still trying to figure that one out myself." She admitted. "Me too." I heard noise in the background. "Oh hey my mom is calling me for dinner." She said. "Ok I'll talk to you later." I said hanging up the phone.

The next day at school i was in my first period English class. "Good morning students." Said Ms. Vale our English teacher.

She took a seat behind her desk and started going through her notes. The door opened and Tyler walked in and handed a note to her. "Ok great take a seat." The only empty desk was the one right beside me. "Ok students so today we are going to be reading the great works of Shakespeare." She droned on. I looked at Tyler. "Why did you switch classes?" I asked him. "Some nerd told me I'd need it for college. I told said nerd I'd at least keep an open mind." He joked. "Jerk." I said hitting him on the arm.

"We're going to delve into his wonderful literature. First we're going to start with Romeo and Juliet. It's one of my personal favorites. Who knows the story?" She asked. A kid in the front raised his hand. "Teddy yes?"

"So basically a dude and chick get together and they both die in the end it's so boring." He said as if his short recap was an accurate description of the play or book whatever it was. "Boring? what are you saying? That this story doesn't have ANYTHING at all to do with you guys?" She asked. We all shook our heads or said no. "Well it does. Do you think a cheerleader could get away with dating a nerd?" She asked.

We all laughed. "Of course not cheerleaders date jocks, and back in the day that's what they were faced with. Juliet was the cheerleader and Romeo was the nerd. Juliet would be socially ostracized if she was caught dating Romeo. Ok so think of a nun...What if they were to date a guy on a motorcycle? It's just not done!" I heard a loud laugh in the corner. "What's wrong tommy can't see that happening?" She asked. "My grandmother would not be caught dead on the back of a Harley." We all started to laugh. Who knew Tommy's grandmother was a nun?

"Exactly. Juliet was your grandmaw so to speak. Romeo was the rebel and being seen with her was not good for Juliet. It's basically a timeless love story. How many of you here have a boyfriend or a girlfriend?" She asked. A few kids raised there hands. "What would you go through to be able to date them?" Robert snorted. "I sure wouldn't kill myself just to be with her, even in the afterlife." He said. His girlfriend hit his arm. "Oh no no Juliet wasn't trying to kill herself." Ms. Vale Clarified. "Then how did she end up dead?" He asked. She smiled knowing she had us interested.

"Juliet had gotten herself into a situation she couldn't get out of." "I bet she got pregnant." Said Kimberly. "Oh no no, Juliet had gotten married to Romeo. Could you image her parents faces if they found out about this? The scandal would be around the whole city, and Juliet knew she loved Romeo far more then her family could ever understand. So it was an easy choice. If they thought she was dead then they couldn't stop her from being with Romeo. So she faked her death. She sent a letter to Romeo letting him know about her plan." She said. "And then what happened? They got to live happily ever after?" Asked Jenny sighing. "We'll see." She said.

"Were going to spend the day watching the movie version of Romeo and Juliet. Well as much as we can. I'll spare you guys from having to read the whole thing. When were done,  I'll pair you up. You need to get with your partner outside of class and make a small movie of your scene. We will be watching them in order on class Friday. So you will see the real movie and then you will see the edited abridged version. So you only have two days to work on this guys, Wednesday and Thursday so you don't have much time. Thursday i want to hear a run through of your movie. Now I have all the scenes in these envelopes. So were going to spend two days watching the movie then i want you to get with your partner and come up an outline for your scene.. I want to feel passion and love and pain i want to see that you really grasp what Romeo and Juliet is about. You will be graded on this. So here's how were going to decide the pairs. Most of the scenes are with Romeo and Juliet alone. So i put all of the girls names into a bucket and I'm going to have the guys come up one at a time and draw a name out. When you grab your names take an envelope."

The guys went up one by one. I waited patiently for my name to be called. Finally it was called and who other than Tyler had my name? Great...well i wasn't going to let his difficult attitude stop me. I was excited for this assignment. Tyler came back to his seat and opened the envelope. "Cool we have the death scene! I wonder if i get to shoot myself or maybe Juliet perhaps?"

Jasmine, sitting next to us laughed. "No but it does have a kiss in it." She said giggling as she saw the look on both our faces. "I'm sure she will let us change that part." I said nodding. I didn't see why that would be a problem. She used a remote on her desk and turned the tv on. She pressed play on the remote and the opening scenes from Romeo and Juliet came on. At least this movie had Leonardo DiCaprio in it. Our teacher was the coolest teacher at school, we didn't do test. She always said the mind can't be tested with pen and paper alone and that we will learn better if we have an interactive project of some sort.

Tyler and i got together on Wednesday during class and worked out an outline for our Romeo and Juliet project. We had to wait to run it by Ms. vale before we shot this thing but we did find a great way to take out the kiss. Instead of Juliet kissing Romeo to find the poison on his lips. She first looks in the vile and doesn't see any poison left and assumes he didn't leave any on his lips either then so she just goes straight for the dagger.

"I think Ms. Vale will love our idea." He said closing his notebook where he had written down our idea. "Stupid hoity toity Juliet. If she wasn't so 'her' then maybe she could of been with Romeo." He said. "What's that supposed to mean? So her..?" I asked. "I just meant Juliet was too good for Romeo and i think deep down he knew it and he pursued her anyways. Why did she have to be so prim and proper?" He asked.

"Maybe because that was what was expected of her! She didn't have a choice." "Oh there's always a choice. She just made the wrong one." He said. "Oh like you know." I said narrowing my eyes at him. "I do know, How do you even know it was really love?" He asked. "Because they didn't want to be with any other people so they just killed themselves." I pointed out. "Again stupid if you ask me who would do such a thing?" He asked.

"I think it's beautiful." He snorted "You would, what's beautiful about that? I'll tell you what, nothing." He said shutting his book and putting it into his back pack. "It is so, because they wanted to be together forever." I sighed. "Right..." He didn't get to finish his thought as the bell rang.  "Ok well I'll see you tomorrow. We're going to the park right? I mean if she okay's our script." I asked. "Wait what? No." He said. "Why not the stone benches will look great in the shot." I said. "Ok look we have to go to a cemetery or something." He said.

"No way, why?" I asked gathering my things. "Because Romeo and Juliet were going to die. So they were in a mausoleum." He said as if it should've been obvious. "Well do you want to go to a church?" I asked trying to pick a place less scary. "No where are you going to find tombs in a church?" He asked. "I guess." I sighed. "Don't tell me your scared?" He asked biting back a laugh. "No it's just i don't know why we have to go there." I said. "Because it will make it more believable." He said getting agitated. "Ok jeez fine we can go to the cemetery." I said grumbling as i turned to leave.

In class on Thursday we pitched our idea to Ms. Vale. She didn't seem as enthused as we had about the idea. "Look guys Romeo and Juliet are seeing each other for the last time. Juliet knows that Romeo is dead. It's her last kiss you guys can do better then this." She said. "Fine we'll try." i said. We had planned to meet that afternoon in the library to study but needed to finish this project instead. So we decided to meet at my house after we had shot the scene. I told him i would fix food and we could just knock all of our studying out at once.
