Chapter 3
After that affair, I was back at the hospital where I was rushed by Dash, Stray, and Moon. The doctor said the most I had were bad bruises and a fractured arm. I did have to get more stitches in a few places around my forehead though. The Rebellion on the other hand, (who was also rushed over here) broke two ribs and her left leg. I knew I didn't do the damage, the halfpipe did, but it still satisfied me.
But now, I just walk home. To explain yet another hefty medical bill to my mom, Jenna, and whichever "dad" might be there.
Then, right it of the sweet calm and silence, screams for help arose from behind me.
I looked to see a building had gone up in flames. People screamed in terror, at first I stood watching. Because that was all I could do after all. Heroes made their way to the spreading flames. The building next to them had caught, two apartments with around 30 people in danger. A growing crowd exposed the area and people ran out, heroes help others recover and tried to put out the fire but to no avail.
It raged harder and more furiously, tackling more of the surrounding buildings because no hero here had a water quirk. I wanted to help but I didn't know how, I'll just let the heroes handle this, they can do it.
More people started to panic, and more time passed. 367 people were in the fire by now, and only 134 were recovered.
My heart pumped to get part of the action, my mind continually beating the idea down. What kind of a person am I if I just stand here.
Then suddenly, without even thinking, my legs began moving, sprinting into the flames, "What the hell am I doing?!" I screamed.
People yelled after me but no one dared follow me in.
The molten buildings were filled with smoke and fallen debris. I coughed as the burning smoke filled my lungs, quickly I knelt to the ground, under all of it. I crawled to the nearest stairway which thankfully wasn't blocked off. Running up the stairs as fast as I could I made it to the second floor before the bottom step gave out. Bits of Sheetrock fell from the ceiling as I opened the door. Through the smoke, I yelled, "Is anyone in here?"
A weak groan in the corner of the room followed and I raced around cracks in the floor towards them, fire jumping along with me. I came to see two people huddled in the corner. One looking nearly conscious and the other's leg was stuck under a pile of debris.
The hurt man chocked on smoke then looked at me with burning eyes, "Where's the heroes?"
I had no idea how to respond to the question, all I did was begin trying to shove over the debris. I looked around, this was once a lobby of some sort so there must be a fire extinguisher somewhere...
"Is there a fire extinguisher somewhere here?" I asked quickly, my eyes watering from the smoke.
"He nodded and pointed across the room to a red, tarnished box. I ran over to it, dodging broken glass on my way. The half-open box was next to a counter with burned garbage scattered all along it. I grabbed the box's door then quickly drew away my hand as a burning sensation rose through my arm. I looked around for something to pry it open with, a lead pipe was half submerged in the rubble, I pulled it out using all of my strength. The side inside the rocks was cool enough to touch, so with it, I pried open in scorching metal. Slipping the pipe under my arm I grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran back to the people, then the ground shook beneath me and the floor a few feet behind me fell to the first floor.
I used the pipe to clear the debris and found the man's leg to be too broken to move. I quickly put out the fire around us, careful not to waste the tank. Looking around for someway, anyway to get this guy out of here, then I saw the window next to me. I grabbed my pipe and broke through it then waved it around whilst yelling so people would see, "Hey guys over here!"
Smoke billowed out the top so I ducked my head beneath it to grab the man. I struggled to pick him up and staggered backward at his weight. Then I went to the window and held him out.
Civilians ran to gather bellow, ready to catch him. Some teen a little younger than I am stretched out his arms to about the height of where the first story ended. I shrugged the man out of my arms. And the man with long arms handed him down to the others who rushed him to the ambulance. Rushing to grab the unconscious man I tripped on a pile of Sheetrock and went tumbling into him. He only groaned in response. I repeated what I did with the first guy but when I turned around a wall of fire blocked the passage to the window, more beams fell from the roof as the place was on the verge of collapse. I fell to my knees on the smoldering wood and screamed in my agony, my sprained arm couldn't take the weight any longer. Through tears, I reached for the fire extinguisher, which burned horrifically so I naturally recoiled my hand. I was stuck, dead at that.
Why am I so stupid? Did I really think I could do this? The heat engulfed the room, smoke became almost blinding and my skin was red. The wall next to me broke slightly, so a layer of bricks fell out revealing a broken pipe. Water gushed out of the pipe, a miracle so I knew I was meant to survive!
I picked up my shaky legs, holding the man. Ignoring all pain and ran through the wall of fire, being covered soaked in water made the fires ravenous burn almost ineffective. I gasped for fresh air as I threw the man out the window to be caught by the crowd.
The people stayed, waiting for me to jump down but I knew I had to keep going. If I'm meant to survive, then what right do I have to let these people die. I jumped over piles of smoldering rubbish back to the stairway and I climbed up.
To my surprise I saw in the midst of smoke and flames, two men facing off in the center of the room. One in red and black clothing, with much-exposed skin, all unharmed by the flames. Then coughing across from him was a man in a green, baggy jumpsuit style outfit. More smoke cleared so I saw it was the number 1 hero Deku.
Embers flew and I stood frozen, on the stairway, which I could only hope was stable.
The unknown man clenched his fist, "Your power is useless to my fire Deku. Don't even try, everyone here deserves what they get,"
"You'd dare say these people deserve to die for living simple lives?!" Deku yelled back.
"Yes! You're here risking your life for these people who would do nothing but worship you. But why are you really here? For the money, you will earn. The Hero Killer has not been forgotten Deku, and you only make matters worse by causing his death."
Deku stared at him in utter surprise, "How do you, never mind that! If you won't stop, then I'll make sure you do. Not because I want to fight you or for the money I'll earn. But because it's my job to right our worlds wrongs, and I want no individual to die because of your blindness!"
Hero Killer? Who's he? And why wouldn't Deku have stopped him, he is number one after all...
The villain smirked, "Taken directly out of a textbook speech."
Deku rushed at him and the villain spit fire from his mouth. Our hero backed off unsure of how to handle the situation. Then he made a face like something had clicked inside his mind, "I'll finish this quickly,"
A green light surrounded Deku and he screamed, "One for All! 2%!"
Deku is using only 2% of his power, he should use it all! Kill him I say!
The hero leaped at the villain, who only smiled. Once Deku reached him, the villain dodged. I couldn't see how, more fire rose from the floor. It ravenously ate away at the building as the two fought like nothing else was happening. Then the villain disappeared into the flames. I saw him, behind a pile of debris, but Deku couldn't. The villain was going to come up from behind! What could I do?
The same anxious feeling that I ran in with crept over me and I ran at the villain, "Deku! Look out!"
I clasped onto the man over his eyes so he couldn't see, "Ugh! Get off of me girl,"
My eyes were shut tight, I couldn't open them if I wanted to and I didn't want to, I couldn't move I was so hardened with fear. That I did want to do, get out of Deku's way.
I heard him say, "What the hell?" heat came back to me and the fire blazed with an annoying ferocity.
I didn't know what was happening and the fire stopped, everything stopped, I was still frozen. But the whole setting just changed like that. My irritated, burned skin still flamed like hell, but floor I lay on changed too. Am I was on a burnt carpet? Now I'm on, ugh, some kind of odd texture. I groaned in my pain and discomfort when a voice came to me, "Hey, are you okay?"
I forced my eyes open to see Deku crouching above me.
I wanted to say no, but my response came out in a weird, twisted, "Klo-Oh."
I tried to get up but I just couldn't, moving wasn't an option anymore.
Deku picked me up in both arms, "Shh. I don't know what you were doing up there, or why you didn't get out. But I owe you my gratitude,"
"Huh?" I said as he began to walk towards newscasters.
"One second, I need to take care of this," Deku greeted the waiting people, "Hello citizens! I promise you now, all is well. The fire was caused purposely by a villain by the name of Burn. He set fire to the area and went down in the smoke. I will give more details later, any quick questions.
The news reporters were pushy and didn't hesitate to bombard Deku with questions, "Deku sir, who is that you're holding?"
"This is the girl that saved my life," was all he responded.
The words echoed in my head, "Save my life,"
Suddenly I remembered when I tackled "Burn" as he is said to be called, Deku gave him a final punch to render him unconscious. After that the floor gave way and I plummeted through the two stories. I must have been knocked out from the impact.
I listened to the rest of the regular questions which were just details about survivors and why it took so long with 7 heroes working on putting the fire out. Deku signaled to some new hero who I guess put out the fire since he had a water quirk, "Water Bomb here can answer the rest of your questions. He knows what happened."
The hero nodded and took their attention.
Deku continued to carry me towards the ambulances, "You were pretty brave, but don't go pulling stunts like that again alright. We're heroes, we like saving people," he joked while entering the car. Laying me down on the bed cart, doctor immodestly got to working on him, a mask was strapped over my face.
Deku took one last look at me and said, "Get better alright, we'll talk once you can move."
Then he walked out the car drove off to the hospital.
Deku wants to talk to me? But I don't even have a quirk, I'm a useless nobody. Maybe he just wants to tell me to be careful but, the number one hero wants to talk to me!
And just like that, my story began.
