✈ Hunter ✈
"Hunter are you ready?" Tyler asked me the same question over and over again.
"Almost. Stop asking me because when I'm ready I will be out there." I was trying to double check if I have packed everything we need into the bag.
"Then can you please hurry up? You're even slower than a girl who needs to apply makeup before going out," Tyler whined.
"Okay fine fine. I'm ready now. Geez, you've got zero patience my friend, zero."
Tyler rolled his eyes exaggeratedly as he picked up his box that was sitting on the floor. Tyler slowly walk to the elevator while I locked up my house door.
Even though today is a Sunday, we and other student volunteers would be heading to school. Today is Star Vale College Giving Back Day 2016.
Student volunteers who have signed up for this event, would set up a stall to sell whatever they want. The money earned would be donated to the partnering charity organization. Last year, Tyler and I applied to be part of this meaningful event. But, as usual, there were too many applications.
Fortunately, we've got the chance to do it this year. Tyler would be in charge of making cup corn while I would be making chicken wrap.
"Hunter stop daydreaming and get in the car."
"I wasn't daydreaming!" I protested but Tyler clearly did not believe me.
"Wake me up when we've reach." I closed my eyes to rest while Tyler maneuvered the car out of the parking lot.
The event was scheduled to start at 9am. Tyler and I decided to reach an hour earlier to set up our stall and prepare. Most of the people were already at the venue when we arrived. As we were approaching our designated stall, I spotted a familiar back view of someone.
"Amber! Wow you're early today!" Tyler went over to greet Amber as she was setting up the table with her friend.
"Hey guys! We just got here not long ago."
"I didn't know you've signed up for this event." I scratched the back of my head as a look of confusion masked my face.
"Why? I don't strike you as a caring person?" Amber asked while a smirk found its way to her lips.
"Yeah you don't." I answered truthfully which made Amber turned to glare at me. With the anger shining through her eyes, there was no doubt that she would refute me. However, before she could do that her friend suddenly spoke up.
"So, Amber. Is he the guy who shared the same cab with you and took your bracelet?" The fury look on Amber's face instantly disappeared and a hint of smile could be seen.
"Yeap. The one and only Hunter Quinn."
"Hi. I'm Isabella Coal, Amber's best friend. But you can call me Bella if you want to." Isabella held out her hand for me to shake.
"Hello Bella. What are you both selling?" I could not hide the curiosity in my tone.
"Amber suggested we should pick out anything we are not using anymore. For example, clothes, books and so on." Isabella responded with a smile before continuing unpacking her stuff.
Tyler went to get our tables after Amber told us where to go. I started to take out the things in our bags. So that when Tyler return, we could immediately proceed to set up our stall.
When Tyler came back with our tables, it took us almost an hour to finish our preparation. The equipments that we brought along were not cooperative. It simply would not work after we plugged it to a power supply. After asking for help from the main committee, we managed to solve the problem, ten minutes before the start of the event.
Amber and Isabella came over and helped us out since they were done with setting up their stall. By the time we were ready for the event, people started to flow into the venue.
Sadly, we were situated at the back of our school's courtyard. Therefore, not much people visited our stalls.
"Hello everybody! Come and take a look what we have available for purchase!" Amber's loud voice boomed loudly with the help of a handheld microphone speaker.
"All proceeds will go to our partnering charity organization!" Amber continued, which successfully garnered enough attention for people to start gathering around her stall.
Tyler's parents are coming and he went to wait for them at the main gate. He only left after cooking enough corn while he was away. But, looking at the current situation, I wasn't sure if we could sell even one cup of cup corn. I did try to advertise what we are selling but so far no one gave a damn about what I said. I took a look at those around me and bit back a sigh.
"Hey guys! I'm sure you're hungry after all the walking! Feel free to try out my friend's delicious chicken wrap and cup corn!" I turned to look at Amber who was standing next to me.
Thanks to Amber's persistence, more people began to take notice of my stall. After ensuring that I would not be tending an empty stall, Amber went back to her stall. Tyler came back just in time when I could barely handle the amount of orders flooding in.
Both of our stalls began to be filled with customers. Seeing that people were enjoying what we have prepared, Tyler and I could not wipe off the grin from our faces. Tyler's parents came by our stall, but we were very busy. Therefore, when there wasn't much people, Tyler left the stall again to bring his parents around our school.
Even though I was busy making chicken wraps earlier on, my eyes would constantly scan around the courtyard in hopes of spotting my family. I tried not to let the feeling of disappointment affect me. So far, I think I was not doing very well.
"Hey Quinn! What's in your busy mind?" I lifted up my head to look at Amber munching away on the chicken wrap I made.
"Nothing." A humorless laugh escaped from my mouth as I replied.
"Oh yeah? You're such a terrible liar."
"Is my chicken wrap that delicious?" I purposely changed the subject and Amber glanced at me sideways.
"I'm just famished okay. My opinion will not be accurate though. Anything will taste awesome to me when I'm hungry."
Once I took in the sudden change Amber's expression, I instantly recognised it. I followed where Amber was staring at and found an attractive guy smiling at Amber. When I turned to check if Amber was returning the smile, she didn't. In fact, Amber had a blank look on her face. Oddly enough, I actually felt a sense of relief rushed through my body.
"Hi Amber. I'm glad to see that you're doing well today." Amber's friend gestured to the half empty table of stuff for sale.
Amber didn't have to tell me but I have a feeling that this guy was the ex boyfriend whom she'd hid herself from the last time we met. Tall and olive-skinned, soft blond hair and green eyes. His jaw was firm and strong, and his nose long but slightly crooked. A charming smile that would melt all the ladies heart. There was no reason why Amber wouldn't like him. Well, she did like him before.
"Yeah. Bye." Amber responded curtly and a look of hurt flashed across the guy's handsome face.
"Amber, do you have to treat me this way?"
"You've asked for it, Raymond."
Raymond suddenly came forward, grabbed Amber's hand, but Amber slapped off his hand before he could bring her anywhere.
"What the hell do you want from me Raymond Hawkins?! You forcefully insert yourself back into my life without a simple apology? Do y-" Amber was half screaming when Raymond dragged her off somewhere else right in the middle of Amber's angry outburst.
I wanted to run after them, in case Amber needed help. But Isabella firmly planted herself in front of me, blocking my way.
"They really need to have this talk. Besides, who will be taking care of your stall when you and Tyler are gone?"
"You?"
"You wish. I'm no chef, unless you want your chicken wrap's newly built reputation to be ruined by me," said Isabella.
"Two chicken wraps and one cup corn, please!" A little girl's cute voice travelled to my ears. I spun around to see that no one was queueing. Just then, the little girl kept on jumping up and down.
"I'm here if you can't see me!" She began to wave while jumping then realised she could just walk to the side.
I chuckled as I walked back to my stall and quickly prepare the little girl's order. She tiptoed to pass me the money, but I was already making my way to give her the bag full of food.
"Hey, here's the change. Hope you'll enjoy the meal!" I gave her a wink and received a shy smile in return.
I straightened myself from the half bending position. After seeing the little girl running towards her parents, I heard my mother calling out for me.
"Hunter!"
I looked around to find my whole family walking in my direction. Unknowingly, a grin was etched on my face. My father had the usual disapproval look on his grumpy face. It almost seemed like he was forced to come here. No matter what was the reason, I'm happy he's here.
