✈ Hunter ✈

"Hey Quinn!"

I stopped in my tracks and took out one of my earpiece. If you are wondering, I do not listen to music with volumes loud enough to blow up my ears. Amber was running towards me and I could not help but notice the change in Amber's hair.

"Yeah? What's up?" I lifted an eyebrow while Amber tried to catch her breath.

"Do you have a calculator with you?"

I turned my bag in front of me to check if I did not take it out after my physics test yesterday. As I was searching through my bag, I found it stuck in between my lecture notes.

"Here you go. By the way did you dye your hair and cut it shorter?" I handed over my calculator as Amber took it with a grateful smile.

"Yeah. Thanks! I'll return it to you after my test!" Amber was about to walk past me when I grab hold of her wrist. Amber froze and glanced down to where my hand was holding her wrist.

"Um.. Is there wanting else you want to ask?" Amber questioned me as she attempted to tug her wrist out of my grasp. I loosened my grip and used the same hand to rub the back of my neck awkwardly.

"N.. Nothing else." I gave myself mental slap for stuttering as Amber smiled before running to her class.

As Amber turned around the corner, I sighed loudly and put both hands on my forehead. I was frustrated with myself for not being able to ask Amber what I wanted to ask. I zipped up my bag after keeping my earpiece and strolled towards my class.

I was stoning away when the lecturer kept on talking and talking. I did not mean to be rude and ignore whatever he was saying. However, this lecturer had the most monotonous voice ever. My brain was trying so hard to concentrate and capture every word that came out of his mouth. I probably gave up halfway into the lecture and stared at the wall until he switched off the projector.

"Alright, I'll continue this topic the next time we meet." The lecturer was about to leave the lecture theatre but there were a number of students rushing down to stop him. They gathered around him as he patiently answered their questions.

As for me? I had no idea what was going on back there, of course there would not be any questions from me. I walked out of the cooling lecture theatre, to feel the heat from the humid weather.

As I took out my smartphone to check it there were any messages for me, it vibrated in my hand. The caller ID indicated that my mum was calling me. I swipe across the green button and brought it to my ears.

"Hey mum."

"It's so good to hear your voice again, Hunter. How's it been living by yourself?"

"I miss you too mum. So far so good I guess."

"I see.. Hunter, I was thinking to have dinner with you tonight."

"Oh hmm okay. Dad is not in town?"

"Yes, he'll be away for a week."

"Tell me the time and place. I'll be there."

My mother and I said our goodbyes after she had decided on where we would be meeting at. The next few lessons went by in a breeze and it was time for me to go home. Logan and I had the last lesson together, so we were making our way out of school.

Logan was on the phone with his girlfriend, which made me feel like a third wheeler even though his girlfriend was not physically here. I heaved a soft sigh as my mind brought me back to the incident with Jenna and her new boyfriend. The feeling of hurt and disappointment was still lingering around even after one month.

I walked over to the vending machine and inserted the coins for my drink. I turned back to see that Logan was nowhere to be found. Logan was probably so engrossed in the conversation, he might not even noticed that I left.

As I bent over to pick up my canned drink, someone smacked me in the back. I was startled by the sudden attack and nearly dropped my drink. Before I stood up straight to glare at the childish person, I could hear her chuckle.

"Wow, did I give you a scare?" Amber asked as she covered her mouth to hide the fact that she was grinning.

"Of course not." I huffed in response while opening my canned drink.

"Stop lying, Quinn. You could barely hold onto your drink earlier on."

"Whatever." I shot Amber a sideway glance to see that she was enjoying the whole process.

As we were walking to the bus stop, I felt something was poking my forearm. I looked to my left to see that it was my calculator. I lifted up my gaze to meet Amber's as I grab hold of the calculator.

"How's your test?"

"Urgh, apparently the question knows me. But I don't know the question." Something caught Amber's eye so she signalled me to wait while she walked towards the canteen.

I leant against the wall and finished my drink in no time, while waiting for Amber. I was scrolling through my Twitter feed when Amber came back with two burgers in her hands.

"This is for lending me your calculator." Amber passed me the burger before she took a big bite on her burger.

"Wow. If I had lent you something bigger, you would have given me a house?" One corner of my lip twitched up into a smirk as Amber threw me an annoyed glance.

"Shut up and eat your burger, Quinn."

"Hey, if you need anything else, make sure to look for me." I nudged Amber in the elbow and the response I had gotten was an exaggerated eye roll.

"I'm just showing appreciation, unlike someone who doesn't know how to." Amber muttered under her breath but I could still hear what she said clearly.

As soon as we exited the main gate, we heard a loud honk from the back. Amber and I stopped and turned around to check who was honking at us. In an instant, I recognized the car because, it belonged to my mother.

My mother came out of the car and waved at us rather enthusiastically. I started walking towards where my mother stood and noticed that Amber was not following behind me.

"Hunter! I need to rush home, bye!" After saying that, Amber ran off to the bus stop. I did not even have the chance to say goodbye. My mother had a mischievous smile on her face when I walked to the car. She continued giving me a weird look as I slipped into passenger seat.

"Mum, Amber's not my girlfriend." I shot my mother a warning look so that she would not say anything ridiculous.

"Oh how sad! I really thought she's your girlfriend. She seems like a nice girl."

"Amber is a nice girl.. I'm just not ready to commit myself into another relationship."

Silence began to fill up the car, I leant my head against the headrest and closed my eyes.

"I've never liked Jenna. What she did to you was horrible. Luckily you've broken up with her." My mother broke the silence and I felt the car came to a stop.

"Mum.. Jenna wasn't that bad, despite what she'd done."

"So you still have feelings for her?"

My eyebrows knitted together as I thought about the question. Do I still care about Jenna after all the hurt she had caused? Am I that forgiving?

"I don't."

"Then just move on. You're acting as if you're waiting for Jenna to realise her mistake and come running back to you."

"Mum! I've already moved on alright!" I replied with a scowl as my mother switched off the ignition after parking the car.

"You better be."

My mother did a little shopping before we head over to the diner for our dinner. The waitress greeted us with a cheerful smile as she showed us to our table. At first, I was puzzled with my mother holding onto my forearm as we entered the diner. As we were approaching our table, I instantly recognized the back view of my brother. I shot my mother a sideway glance and she tightened her grip, giving me a silent signal to keep walking.

After we settled down at the table, there was an awkward silence between the three of us. I quietly reached over for the cup of water and drank it without making any eye contact with my brother. The waitress came to get our orders, I successfully stopped myself from rolling my eyes when my brother gave her a wink.

"So Hunter, how have you been?" Carter focused his attention on me after the waitress left.

"Better than ever." I replied, sarcasm dripping from every word.

"Glad to hear that." His lips pulled up into an annoying grin.

"Hunter," my mother placed a hand on my elbow to get my attention. "Carter managed to talk some sense into your father about your situation."

I was not really interested in what Carter did, so I simply arched an eyebrow. My mother gestured for Carter to tell me the news.

"You are able to come home at the end of the year. Well, before you say anything. It's because dad wants to instill a sense of independence and responsibility in you."

I had no idea what to say because I was happy yet sad at the same time.

"Hunter, it took Carter a lot of effort to convince your father to let you come home. It'll be great if the two of you could treat each other nicely." My mother gave me a pointed look while she spoke. I murmured a thank you and rolled my eyes when I noticed the smirk on Carter's face.
