Chapter 19

Narrator's pov

-

It was the type of coldness that reached into your bones, as if your heart were a door left wide open to the icy wind, slamming only to open again. The only thing to do was keep moving, keep heading toward home and the steady warmth of the hearth.

The morning was normal, the sun appearing in the clouds and no form of rain or snow. But the fallen afternoon was different for them.

The sky was rolling blankets of cloud the colour of wet ash, and the ground its dank reflection. Each step became a prayer for home as people walked, seeing the light from the doorway in their flickering daydreams, letting it become more real than the stormy night.

Kate shuddered and pulled her robe closer to her chest, the girl was already drenched in her sweater, pajamas and socks but a robe was the only thing keeping her warmish.

Her feet touched the wide marbled staircase of the mansion as she gripped the wooden balcony, slowly taking steps to the first floor

Autumn was no where in sight but the lights of house were still on, Kate couldn't bring herself to sleep in the new room since she was still missing her partner in crime but curiously still pulled her from her room

She'd been so accustomed to living with her roommates, her old apartment was loud. Music was always blasting in her friend's room and no matter how much she yelled for them to lower the volume, she secretly liked listening to it on a calm night in her bed with a lamp and good book to snuggle up to

Ethan was always gaming, yelling at himself for failing a new alcohol mix or being the dumbass he is and danced around the apartment for no reason

Jamie was always like a mother in the apartment, vacuuming day and night. The noise almost gave Kate a headache but she had grew so accustomed to the girl vacuuming exactly 8pm every night then yelling at Ethan for not cleaning up his messes

They were all family in that house and they spent every second of each day with each other. So on this first day of moving into a new house with so much space, Kate felt alone.

She felt alone in an ocean and too tired to swim. She was alone in a big house since Autumn gave zero fucks if she existed

Her socks touched the flat tiled floor and felt a cold send right through her feet, Kate hissed at the feeling and hugged her robe even tighter

Her dark brown eyes scanned the entire room below the staircase, Autumn was still nowhere in sight, she didn't even have any way to contact the girl of something happened. They still hadn't spoken since the meeting on May's office

Kate's eyes then glanced at the dark grey wall, posters were all lined through out the house of movies and shows that Autumn appeared in

Kate stepped closer, her fingertips barley brushing against the wooden frame of the tall poster that lit up

It was a picture of Autumn braced against a white wall, her hands shoved in her pockets and her blue eyes seemed even deeper than they were. The girl was wearing a tight suit as a tall man gripped her tie, forcing her to face him.

There was a tall glass trophy that was bolted to the wall, Kate assumed it was brought in and set up when she was upstairs.

The golden trophies glistened under the golden chandelier lights of the room. Kate's eyes sunk into her skull and her mouth left hallow as she stared at the trophies. Autumn had won awards for different categories and films. The golden glove awards rested next to her academy awards trophy, below were the girl's national film, critics and independent spirits awards.

Kate almost melted against the glass case as her eyes glittered with happiness. As much as she hated the girl's ways and her attitude, she'd always respect Autumn's work. The girl always placed her best into her films, it led her to the many awards she's won.

Something Kate hoped to achieve for herself in the future.

Kate's eyes then glanced over to another poster, the neon blue and pink colour of the imagine reflected on Autumn's face, the girl had on a leather jacket and her smirk matched the intensity of her blue eyes that stared into the soul of anyone that looked at the imagine. Behind her was the cast of Riverdale. The red Riverdale was written at the top of the poster

Kate chuckled softly and walked along the hall, her fingertips running over the wall to another wooden frame poster. In this one, Autumn crossed her arm and leaned her back against the actors of Grey's Anatomy

Kate furrowed her brows as she tilted her head to examine the poster even closer. She had no idea the girl had appeared in the show, perhaps because she hadn't watched it yet but still

Kate's eyes glanced at the glass that held the poster, her heart immediately left her the second she saw Autumn's reflection in the glass, standing behind her with her arms crossed against her chest

"What are you doing?" Autumn asked with a raised brow

Kaye's eyes widened as she spun on her heel to face the girl, her heart seemed to go at a fast rate

"I- I just was looking" Kate mumbled

Autumn's eyes trailed from Kate's eyes and traveled down her body, reaching the girl's feet before returning back to her eyes

"Hmm" Autumn hummed, her eyes still locked on Kate's brown orbs

A burning sensation reached Kate's cheek feeling the girl's eyes on her and receiving such attention

"Um.. You, you appeared in Grey's anatomy?" Kate broke the silence

"Season 10, I got bored and left after a while" Autumn said

"Why?"

"There was too much going on, plus everyone there was way to old to film with. It would have been me just being a doctor and having zero love interests" She shrugged

"Oh.. And what about Riverdale?" Kate asked

"Oh God" Autumn groaned as she stepped over to the poster

"Hated it huh?" Kate chuckled as she joined the girl, their eyes burning into the tall image

"With a passion. For fuck sakes" Autumn rolled her eyes

"Why did you do it?"

"I didn't have a choice, I was 16 and my mother was my manager" Autumn mumbled

"Must have been hell" Kate chuckled

"They wanted the characters to go to hell, literally. She wanted us to visit hell. That script went off the road after season 2 and they need be hit over the head with a stick of sense" Autumn rolled her eyes again

"You've done alot and we're almost the same age, makes me question alot of stuff" Kate mumbled

A pair of blue eyes then glanced in her direction, Autumn stared at the girl's side profile, each sharp curve and that perfectly aligned nose. Her high toned cheekbones as the strands of hair that hung around her ear

"You're a talented actress Kate, don't second guess yourself because of this. Life is hard, this industry is hard. It'll break you into pieces and make you lose yourself, but at the end of the day you just need to remember why you started acting in the first place. That vivid imagination of yours, it runs free when you're acting, those feelings you pushed aside and wanted to vent out is all poured into a character you take on. It feels like a whole different world, it's like a drug sometimes, I'm sure you know that. But what I've seen, you're calm and you handle yourself well, you know yourself in your characters and you're not afraid to take another step. I think that's admirable. Besides, I started acting when I was basically one year old, things take time" Autumn shrugged and turned her attention back to the neon Riverdale poster

It was then did Kate turned to face the girl, her dark brown eyes piercing into Autumn's sideburns

"You know... That's the first nice thing you've ever said to me" She whispered

"Don't get accustomed to it. Being nice doesn't help anyone" Autumn said in a low voice

"Who told you that?"

"I learnt it" Autumn mumbled

"Autumn, that's not the way-"

"Don't give me a pep talk right now" Autumn said as she glanced at the girl

"I'm not. But your mindset is so different-"

"Did you hear anything I said just now?" Autumn hissed

"Calm down, I wasn't trying to do anything" Kate mumbled, pulling her robe even closer to her body as a shudder rolled down her spine

"You're cold?" Autumn asked

"Yes. Aren't you? It feels like the Antarctic in here"

"Really, is that why you're shaking?"

"How are you not cold right now!?" Kate asked

"Maybe I'm a vampire" Autumn smirked, glancing at the girl

Kate felt her heart do flips in her chest just seeing the girl's slight smile and dark blue eyes locked onto her own. Kate's eyes then fell onto her lips, seeing those soft pink lips that were curled into a smirk

"Are you?" She asked with her heart still echoing through her veins

"No. But I spent two years filming a show in the Antarctic" She said, Kaye furrowed her brows

"Really? When?" Kate asked

Her eyes lids felt heavy, almost forcing its way down to close. She let out a yawn and rubbed her eyes with the back of her palm, feeling the sleepiness come over her

"It's not out yet, it's releasing in a few weeks. It's been underworks for about three years now" Autumn said

"I guess that's why your heart is so cold" Kate mumbled, causing the girl to frown

"I'm not cold" she said

"You're emotionally closed off and have this mindset that being nice is the worse thing to happen to someone. You yell at people for no reason and boss around everyone like you own the place, I'm pretty sure you're cold Autumn" Kate shrugged as she headed back towards the staircase

Kate made her way up the stairs, her eyelids still falling heavy as sleep called her name. Autumn stood frozen in place still, her brows switched together as Kate's words echoed through her mind

Sure she knew she wasn't the nicest person there was, nor was she a delight to be around. But was she really that cold hearted? Kate barely knew the girl or her history. She wouldn't know anything. Right?

"Goodnight Autumn" Kate mumbled from the top of the stairs as she made her way into the new room

The room was cold, just the same as she left it. The warm spot on the bed she left was colder than the entire room

She sighed and rested her head on the soft pillows, pulling the covers over her shoulders and allowing her eyelids to finally lock down

Her first night away from her friends, her first night being alone in the new house and her first time having an actual conversation with Autumn, sure it didn't go as well but it was still something and she could sleep knowing she tried.

A sudden dip in the bed caused Kate to slowly flutter her eyes open, not as wide but just enough to see a figure sitting on the edge of the bed.

Her nostrils took in the familiar mint scent of the actress and she immediately knew it was Autumn

"I.. I heard you couldn't sleep without your.. Um.. Teddy bear? So, I asked someone to head over to your apartment with that guy you had here earlier. I think his name was Ethan? They spent the whole day searching the apartment for you, toy and they found it. So.. Here" Autumn mumbled as she placed Kate's childhood teddy bear on the bed

Kate's eyes widened as her arms reached out and wrapped around the brown toy tightly, squeezing the soft cotton animal in her chest and burying her face into his strawberry scent but it was now mixed with Autumns mint green scent, had she been hugging the bear?

Autumn bit her lip nervously as she made her way over to the door, her fingers gripped the doorknob and slowly pulled it close

"Tha-thank you" Kate mumbled, her eyes staring into those blue orbs

Autumn gave the girl a smile side smile and nodded before pulling the door close, the shadow of her feet slowly faded away and Autumn was gone

Kate laid in her bed with her brows furrowed and her arms wrapped tightly around the bear, Autumn sent someone to search for something that was close to Kate's heart, something she truly cherished. Yet she told the girl she was cold hearted just a few minutes ago

Maybe... Just maybe.. Autumn wasn't that bad after all
