{9} The Quidditch Match
***
It was the next morning and all the students were in the Great Hall. It was breakfast and everyone was digging into the delicious food. Except for Prim. She was just so worried about the match that she had today. There was a Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Slytherin. She was obviously pretty nervous. Sure, she had been practicing, but practice is a lot different than the actual thing. You don't get any redos if you mess up in an actual match. All Prim could manage to do besides worry was play with her food.
Ron, who had been stuffing his face, looked over at his friend to notice that she hadn't taken a single bite of her food. He gestured to the food on her plate, "Take a bit of toast, mate, go on."
"Ron's right, Prim. You're gonna need your strength today." Hermione told her.
Prim finally looked up from her food and to her friends, "It's fine, guys. I'm just not hungry." She would never outright tell them that she was worried. She didn't want to bring her friends' moods down by having to tell them her problems. Although, their concern did make her feel happy. She never had someone be concerned for her ever. The Dursleys certainly wouldn't dream of being concerned for her, considering all the chances they were given.
A sudden gloomy presence came over the redhead. She almost shivered at the pure weight of gloom surrounding her. Prim turned to see Snape standing behind Ron. He had this piercing gaze that made her want to shrink down in her seat. "Good luck today, Potter," Snape started, "Then again, now that you've proven yourself against a troll, a little game of Quidditch should be easy work for you..," Prim just responded with an awkward look, "Even if it is against Slytherin."
Snape took his leave and that's when Prim noticed something. Instead of walking away normally, he had a limp. She surveyed his walk a bit more when the conclusion hit her. She remembered that when the teachers came into the bathroom, Snape had a scratch on his leg and he tried his best to hide it from her. That must mean...
"I guess that explains the blood, then." Prim spoke. Hermione questioned her about the blood with a confused expression. Prim hesitated before saying, "Listen... This might seem like a stretch, but, last night, I'm guessing Snape let the troll in as a diversion so he could try and get past that three-headed dog. But, he got himself bitten, and that's why he's limping now."
"But why would anyone go near that dog?" Hermione exclaimed in a whisper. Prim had to agree. That dog was big and terrifying. She wouldn't take her chance with it no matter how badly she wanted to see what it was guarding.
She had an idea about why Snape would want to distract the dog though, "The day I was at Gringotts, Hagrid took something out of one of the vaults. He said it was Hogwarts' business, very secret. He tried really hard not to give away what it was."
"So you're saying-"
"That's what the dog's guarding and for whatever reason... Snape wants it." Prim continued. Just what was so important about what Hagrid got out of the vault. It didn't look that important from what little she saw of it. Was it something really powerful? What was it able to do that would make Snape want it so bad.
The sound of an owl screeching broke Prim out of her thoughts. Prim and everyone else looked in the direction of the screeching. Flying towards her was Hedwig with a very large and long parcel. Hedwig dropped it and Prim was able to catch it. The redhead looked at the object with confusion. What even was it and who sent it to her?
"Bit early for mail, isn't it?" Hermione asked.
"B-But... I never get mail." Prim stuttered. It's not like the Dursleys had a change of heart and decided to do something nice for her. She doubted that that would ever happen. If it did then it would most likely be the end of the world. It was so unlikely for it to happen that she couldn't even bring herself to imagine it. It was so out of character for them.
Ron had an eager look on his face, "Let's open it." He sounded so excited to see what it was. It would be easy to mistake that the package was for him if no one saw Prim's owl delivering it.
The three of them started to rip the package open. They started by untying the strings and ripping off the paper. Laying on the table in front of them was a broomstick. It looked very familiar to Prim. Maybe she saw it in one of the shop windows at Diagon Alley. "A... Broomstick?" She inquired. She should have been able to tell by the shape of it even if it was wrapped, but it would have been good to make sure either way. You never know, the Wizard World could have some type of packages that takes a different shape then what you actually got.
"That's not just any broomstick, Prim," Ron's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree, "It's a Nimbus 2000!" Sure enough, on the handle, it had, "Nimbus 2000" carved into it. By the tone of Ron's voice, it must have been something that was really cool in the Wizard World.
Prim wasn't really worried about that though. There was only one question she had, "But who..." Prim trailed off when she turned her attention to the head table. Hedwig was sitting on the table by Professor McGonagall's side. Professor McGonagall was stroking the beautiful owl when she noticed Prim looking over. She gave the girl a small smile and Prim nodded her head in thanks.
***
It was now time for the Quidditch match. Prim could feel herself shaking a little because of how anxious she was. She took deep breaths to calm herself down. She couldn't be scared on the field or she would end up messing up on something very important and it would end up costing them the win. She couldn't allow herself to mess this up for her team. Prim and her team were marching towards the starting gate with Oliver in front and Prim behind him.
They had to climb a flight of steps when they finally made it to the closed double door. The air in the room was tense. Everyone was a little worried about this. Prim could see why too. Prim and Oliver stood side by side as they waited for the gate to open.
"Scared, Prim?" It was like Oliver could tell. Prim was probably shaking still... Or it was the obviously worried look on her face that gave her away.
Prim took a deep breath to compose herself when she said, "Maybe a little."
"That's all right. I felt the same way before my first game." Oliver tried to make the girl feel better. It was working a little bit. At least she knew that she wasn't the only one who had been worried for their first game. This calmed her down a little bit.
"What happened?" She turned her attention to him instead of the door.
The look on his face made her worry again. "Er, I don't really remember. I took a bludger to the head two minutes in," Prim's eyes widened in shock, "Woke up in the hospital a week later."
Prim gulped as she thought about that happening to her. She almost jumped at how real she imagined it to be. She went back to looking at the doors when they opened. Cheering could be heard from the crowd. It was so loud that Prim wanted to cover her ears, but she didn't. The Gryffindor team all mounted their brooms and zoomed out into the enormous pitch.
The commentator of the match, Lee Jordan, could be heard speaking. Even though he was using a microphone, the crowd almost drowned him out, "Hello, and welcome to Hogwarts' first Quidditch game of the season! Today's game Slytherin versus Gryffindor!" Both Gryffindor and Slytherin students cheered loud for their teams and waved at their team when they passed it. Prim flew high above the rest so she could get into her position like everyone else was doing. She looked down on everyone, "The players take their positions as Madam Hooch steps out onto the field to begin the game."
Some players from both teams were crowded into a circle above Madam Hooch as she walked to stand below them. She stopped beside the trunk and looked up at the players. "Now, I want a nice clean game... From all of you." She gave the Slytherin team a look like she was mostly talking to them. Madam Hooch turned her gaze to the trunk and kicked it. The trunk flew open and the bludgers flew out, along with the Snitch.
"The bludgers are up... Followed by the Golden Snitch," Lee announced. The Snitch flew toward Prim and it zoomed around her before doing the same to the Slytherin seeker, "Remember, the Snitch is worth 150 points. The seeker who catches the Snitch ends the game," The snitch flew away and disappeared while Madam Hooch grabbed the Quaffle and threw it up, "The Quaffle is released... And the game begins!" Prim watched as one of her teammates catch the Quaffle and zoom towards the Slytherins' goal.
The teammate with the Quaffle, Angelina Johnson, bumped into someone, but was able to continue her course to the other team's goal. She dodged the other team's hits and bumps with ease. As soon as she was close enough, she threw the ball into the goal and scored. A ding sounded and Lee spoke again, "Angelina Johnson scores! Ten points for Gryffindor!" Lee pressed a button and the number 10 showed up beside a plaque with Gryffindor's name. Gryffindor cheered loudly in the stands.
Prim smiled brightly and clapped in her place in the air. She still hadn't moved from her original place. She was just so focused on what everyone else was doing that she forgot about her job. Could you blame her though? She's never watched a Quidditch match, much less even be in one.
"Yes!" Prim yelled when a bludger suddenly zoomed past her, almost hitting her. "I guess I shouldn't just float here."
Lee continued to commentate the game as it went on. Prim finally decided to start trying to help her team win at this point and would fly around with her teammates and helped them when she could. Gryffindor managed to score another ten points which made the Gryffindor team and Gryffindor house very happy. This was when the Slytherin team decided to get a little more serious. They would dodge and kick while also trying to score. Prim watched anxiously while Flint from the Slytherin team grabbed a beater's bat and whacked a bludger right at Oliver.
Before anyone was able to warn the Gryffindor captain, the bludger hit Oliver directly in the stomach and he plummeted to the ground while also falling through one of the hoops. He fell onto the sand, completely unconscious. The audience started booing at the Slytherin team for their captain's dirty trick. Prim was visibly upset also at Flint's actions. The Slyhterin team just laughed at what they did.
Slytherin managed to score ten points. Angelina ended up getting boxed in by some of the Slytherin players and they sent her flying into the capes covering one of the towers. She hit the ground and was immediately out of the game. The crowd continued to boo as Slytherin scored once again. That was when Prim finally saw the Snitch. She started to head off after it when her broom started acting strangely.
Her broom started bucking and turning like it was trying to make her fall off. "Whoa!" Prim said in surprise as she almost fell off. She continued to try to hold on with a confused look on her face, "What's happening?" She kept getting knocked and thrown around until she fell off. Thankfully, Prim managed to grab the broom with one hand so she didn't fall to the ground. She didn't even want to think about how bad a fall from this height would hurt.
After a minute or two, the broom stopped bucking around and Prim was able to climb back on. She surveyed her surroundings to see the Slytherin seeker heading after the Snitch. She was not going to let him get it. With that thought in mind, she took off after both him and the Snitch. Prim went zooming towards the Slytherin seeker and rammed into him when she was side by side with him. The two rammed into each other two or three times when Prim went flying a little far away from the last time she was hit by the Slytherin seeker.
SHe went right back to the seeker and smashed into him once again as the Snitch suddenly dived down. Both seekers dived after it and Prim could see the ground getting closer and closer. She would be lying if she said that she wasn't scared, but she had to get the Snitch for her team. Once the other seeker noticed how close they were getting to the ground, he backed out immediately, not wanting to get injured.
Prim pulled her broom up so she wouldn't crash to the ground. She was just a few feet above the ground now and she slowly stood up on her broom. She stepped forward so she could try and grab the Snitch. Prim ended up stepping too far and fell off the broom with a small yelp. She tumpled onto the ground when she noticed that she had accidentally swallowed the Snitch. Her eyes were wide as she shot up.
She could feel herself start lurching as the Snitch coming back up. The crowd gasped at the sight. Prim lurched again when the Snitch popped out of her mouth and landed in her hands. The girl could only watch in shock as she tried to process what just happened.
"She's got the Snitch!" Lee announced to the audience, "Primrose Potter receives 150 points for catching the Snitch!"
Madam Hooch blew her whistle loudly as she rode around on her broomstick, "Gryffindor wins!"
The Gryffindor students cheered louder than Prim ever heard them before. Prim continued to look at the Snitch with shock. "We won... I caught the Snitch and we won.," A wide smile that could rival all her other ones, fake or not, broke out onto her face. She raised the Snitch into the air, "Hell yeah!"
The crowd and her team continued to cheer, "Go, go, Gryffindor! Go, go, Gryffindor! Go, go, Gryffindor! Go, go, Gryffindor!" This was like a dream to Prim, but she hoped it wasn't. She wouldn't be able to bear it if it was. If it was a dream then it was one that she never wanted to wake up from.
