Queen of Oz (Part One)

Freddie Mercury was sitting at his piano, playing away some tunes. It was late at night but he was hesitant to give up his work. His eyelids were drooping as he almost fell into a deep slumber. By accident, as he was finishing an arpeggio, his fatigued head swung forward as he began a surprise sleeping. With a bang, his skull hit the piano, and Freddie Mercury was out cold.

Freddie woke up lying beside his piano, which was oddly upside down and looked smashed.

Freddie gasped. "My piano!" He shrieked. "My beautiful grand piano!" Freddie ran up to his broken instrument and gingerly held one of the snapped-off white keys. "Oh, my poor baby," Freddie sobbed.

"Excuse me, sir," said a high pitched voice from behind the mourning singer. Freddie turned, shocked to find that it wasn't only him in this new land. What Freddie found was a little man with a big, curly moustache: a munchkin. "Why are you crying? You killed the wicked witch of the east!"

"But my piano!" Freddie cried. "I-It's ruined!"

"Your piano saved us," the munchkin stated. "It killed the wicked witch of the east who used to torment us."

"Us?" Freddie asked, noticing that all around him, little people like the moustached munchkin were popping up. Around the garden, munchkin ladies appeared from the buds of flowers and some munchkin men from inside a lined building. A small stream trickled by the bright yellow road confirmed Freddie's thoughts. He was indeed in the land of Oz.

"I'm the mayor of Munchkinland, and us munchkins would like to present you with an enormous thank you for destroying the evil witch," the mayor said to a now-standing Freddie.

The munchkin folk chirped together, "Thank you!"

"Now, if you don't mind, I have to get back home," Freddie stated.

"Oh?" Said the munchkin mayor. "Where do you reside?"

"London," Freddie replied. "But I'm not sure how to get there."

"Ah, you must live in a different land than ours," the munchkin mayor sighed. "I'm sorry, we can't help you."

Freddie nodded solemnly. "That's alright, it's-"

The munchkins gasped in unison, interrupting Mr. Mercury. The munchkins pointed to the sky and held a hand over their mouths. Whispers arose into a long hum, causing Freddie's curiosity to get the best of him. He turned around to see what the munchkins were so amazed by. It was a shimmering bubble with a tinge of pearly pink to it. It grew larger as it approached Freddie and the munchkins, but when it had gotten close enough, the large bubble popped. A gorgeous princess-like being appeared. She had blonde hair and was dressed in a lovely rose gown. Freddie recognized her instantly.

Mary Austin.

"Good witch!" Exclaimed the munchkins.

"Hello, munchkins!" She said with a smile. She blinked and faced Freddie. "It seems we have a visitor."

"Mary?!" Freddie shouted in surprise. "What're you doing here? And why did you come out of a bubble?"

"I'm not Mary, dear," the princess-like woman chimed. "I'm the Good Witch of the North."

"B-But you're identical to Mary Austin!" Freddie exclaimed.

"I don't know who this Mary person is," the Good Witch explained, "but what I do know, is that you killed the Wicked Witch of the East!"

The munchkins clapped and cheered, applauding so loud that Freddie could feel the sound vibrations. The Good Witch spun her wand around.

"Which means, you will be awarded with these," the Good Witch of the North stated gladly, swirling her wand and casted a stream of shimmer away. It flew away, circled behind the piano, and then glimmered around Freddie's ankles. When the sparkle had disappeared, there was a pair of ruby red shoes on his feet.

"Oh my! These are delightful!" Freddie exclaimed, admiring shining shoes. "What's the designer? How expensive were these?"

The munchkin mayor laughed, approaching Freddie and the Good Witch. "No, no, no sir. You don't understand. These are magic shoes."

"Oh yes, right, I forgot," Freddie chuckled, surprised that the shoes actually. "Sorry, I haven't watched the Wizard of Oz movie in so long."

"Oh! So you've heard of the wonderful wizard!" The Good Witch exclaimed.

All of a sudden, the munchkin folk broke into song. High-pitched song. Freddie wanted to sing along, of course, but he just didn't know the lyrics to their little melodies. In the middle of their harmony, a flaming whirl appeared in the middle of the yellow brick road. The munchkins gasped and collapsed, hiding their heads under their hands. From the flaming whirl appeared a grotesque witch, who strutted out of the fire with an angry face. She scowled at the munchkins and then turned her vision to the crumbled piano. She shrieked suddenly, making Freddie jolt.

"My sister!" The witch howled. "My sister! She's dead!" She turned around, her long black coat flying about. "Who is responsible for this?!" She walked around the wincing munchkins. "Was it you?" She asked, hitting one munchkin with her broom. "Or you, was it you?" Hitting another munchkin.

"Er... Uh... no need to hit those munchkins," Freddie stammered.

The witch whipped around. "Now why are you telling me what to do? What makes you so important?" She hissed.

"I... I killed your s-sister," Freddie stammered.

"What?!" The witch shrieked. "You! You devilish fiend you! I stabbeth thee!" The witch's brought her broom over top of her head, ready to bring it down upon Freddie. Freddie gasped and shielded his head.

"Wretched sister, stop your broom!" Said the Good Witch's stern but seemingly kind voice.

The wicked witch of the west growled and muttered a name angrily. Freddie felt he was not in any danger, so he brought his hands away from his head and peered to where the voice came from.

"Good Witch of the North..." The wicked witch grumbled. "Why are you here? What do you want from me?"

"I want you to stop terrorizing these good people!" The fairy-like woman said, who had striking resemblances to Freddie's Mary Austin.

"Oh I will," the Wicked Witch muttered. "Well, maybe, if I could only receive one little trinket." The Wicked Witch of the West hobbled over to the broken piano and screeched at the sight before rushing back. "Her shoes!" She shrieked. "What happened to her shoes?!"

The Good With of the North harrumphed and nodded her head toward Freddie. The Wicked Witch eyed Freddie's feet and screeched again.

"You!" She scowled, creeping her way over toward Freddie. "You killed my sister and took her shoes!"

"I...I..." Freddie stammered.

"Quickly!" Squealed the evil witch. "Give the shoes to me!"

"He can't," the Good Witch argued. "They stay on his feet until his death!"

Freddie gulped. "M-My... My death?"

The Wicked Witch of the West sneered. "I'll get you, my pretty!" she cackled. "If it's the last thing I do!"

In a whirling swirl of flame, the evil witch disappeared. The munchkins stood up, wiping their brows and dusting off their pants. The Good Witch stared kindly at Freddie.

"Farrokh Bulsara," she hummed, beckoning Freddie towards her. "So you want to see the Wizard of Oz?"

"I do, I've heard he can help me get back home," Freddie replied sincerely, staring deeply at the Good Witch. It was a wonder she was so identical to Mary Austin. "But don't call me Farrokh Bulsara. Please."

"As you wish," the Good Witch of the North obliged. She pulled Freddie along with her to the center of Munchkinland. A swirl of pink and yellow road was planted in the middle.

The yellow brick road.

"You just have to follow the yellow brick road!" A munchkin shouted from the crowd.

"Yes," the Good Witch agreed. "Follow the yellow brick road until you reach the Emerald City. There's a rather odd forest you'll come across, but you have to stay brave. Even the Wizard of Oz is a little bit frightening at times."

"Alright," Freddie said before beginning to walk down the yellow brick road. "Goodbye!" He yelled to the munchkins and the Good Witch. "Thanks for your help!"

The munchkins waved as Freddie left, and the Good Witch gave a kind goodbye smile. Freddie huffed as Munchkinland disappeared into the distance. This would be a very, very long journey.
