Chapter 2
"Another husband? I don't want another husband. Why would you offer me something like that?" I was flabbergasted. I didn't understand why they would offer me such a thing?
Am I too handful for them?
Are they finally bored of me?
Did I do something wrong?
Those thoughts made me feel anxious. I naively thought that we live happily in our marriage. I always thought that I contributed to our marriage, raising our children, to ruling the Ravendale. I didn't understand, weren't they happy having me as their wife?
"Annabelle, darling, you're a wonderful wife ..." Alexander gently said as he held my hand, but I removed my hand.
"If I'm a wonderful wife, then why are you offering me this? I'm content with having you two as my husbands." I said worrying about my husbands.
Maybe they are pressured?
"Our dearest, as Alexander said you're a wonderful wife but sometimes we worry that we don't give you enough attention since we accepted the role of the Prince Consort. We just think having another husband will be good for you since he can take some responsibilities in helping to rule the Ravendale and be another panther for you to lean on." Nathaniel explained.
"Besides that Annabelle you gave birth to our two beautiful children, you deserve to have another husband." Alexander gently reasoned.
Alexander is right, by Ravendalian family law, if I give birth to my first husband's child it means that I have a full right to get a second rank husband if I wanted to. The thing is I don't want to have a second rank husband.
"I don't mind you two being busy performing your duties as a Prince Consorts, I can handle it. I don't think there is a need for me to get the second rank husband." I explained to them.
"Well, the thing is we already found you a candidate." Nathaniel sheepishly said. I blinked a few times until I understood.
"Don't tell me you registered him as part of my harem?" I asked with a hint of a dangerous tone.
"We truly apologize our dearest wife, but we indeed registered them as part of your harem." Alexander sheepishly answered.
"How dare you registered another husband behind my back!?" I stood up and moved so I could stand in front of them.
"I've never given my consent to find and register another man behind my back. Have you ever thought about how are we going to explain to our children? What if new husband and children will hate each other!?" I almost screamed. I didn't want to raise my voice on my husbands, but I was furious that my husbands found a candidate behind my back.
I didn't know how my new husband looks, his personality, is he capable, is he good with children. Especially, since I've never considered finding a second rank husband.
"Annabelle, we live in Ravendale it's normal for Ravendalian families for the child to see a mother with another man. This type of family structure survived for many centuries now. Our children will get used to it since in Ravendale is not frowned upon." Alexander reasoned.
I clench my fist, instantly my nails dug into my palms.
Alexander is right, this family structure for centuries and I have a full fight to have a second husband as a Queen I can get husbands as many as I want. As a Queen, I'm expected to have a harem of husbands with a good status so it would help to increase my power.
Why I naively thought that I can keep my family as the way I always wanted?
"Give me some time to process this." I told them with a cold and tired voice.
I left the lounge room. In the hallway, a servant was waiting for me to report the news.
"Your Majesty, former Queen has arrived and she is waiting in a sunroom."
My grandmother has arrived?
"Alright, please lead the way." I asked my servant. The Royal Palace has a lot of sunrooms. It's will be hard to determine which one of the sunrooms my servants lead my grandmother in.
My grandmother was in the sunroom that was on the fifth floor. She calmly waited while reading a few newspapers. She smiled when I finally finished talking with my husbands.
"It's nice to see you, grandmother." I greeted her. She stood up and walked to hug me.
"I hope you don't feel too stressed about managing Ravendale's affairs." My grandmother said as she hugged me.
"No, I'm doing alright for now." I answered.
Then we stopped hugging and sat on the chair. Servant poured me a cup of my favorite tea as another servant poured grandmother a cup of her favorite tea.
"Really? I've heard servants were gossiping about your recent argument with your husbands. What you were arguing about?" She asked with concern.
I looked up at my servants and I slightly glared at them. They understood my hint and quietly left the room.
I made my note to ask my Palace Head Maid to scold the servants and make them review the Palace Code.
"We indeed argued." I sighed. I can't believe my grandmother is aware of our recent argument.
"About what?" Grandmother asked me again in curiosity.
"We were discussing adding a second rank husband to our family." I answered.
"Your husbands are disagreeing with this idea?" my grandmother asked.
"No, I'm the one who is disagreeing with the idea."
"Oh?"
"Well, sooner or later you would still need to accept second rank husband, as a Queen it's expected for you to have multiple husbands." Grandmother voiced her opinion and then proceeded to say.
"I also had difficulties accepting my second husband, when your grandfathers decided to find another husband a few days after I gave birth to your father. Then my second husband had to leave the harem since I wasn't in the best mood to get along with him or any of the husbands until your grandfathers found me a replacement for a second husband who was a siren and sirens are more aware of human's emotions." I quietly listened to my grandmother.
"How many husbands did you have in your harem, how many ranks were there and how did you get along with them?" I asked her a bunch of questions. I didn't know the exact number of my grandmother's husbands and her relationship with them.
"I only had 6 husbands who shared 5 ranks in the harem." She answered. I was a bit surprised by her answer because I've never seen her other husbands, I only saw my grandfather with her.
"The second husband was my lover until he unfortunately died, the third and fourth husbands we've become good friends and with fifth husbands, they were just for mutual benefits." She explained to me.
"What about my grandfathers, did they had a hard time accepting that you have other men to lean on? O-r ..." I tried to ask but I was afraid that I will sound stupid.
I didn't have a good idea of how to harem needs to be structured and run. My mother only had my father as her only husband.
"I don't know how the harem supposed to work, please don't mind for asking you the stupid questions." I dejectedly sighed.
My grandmother only smiled.
"It's alright, remember we will be always there to help you whenever you would need our help." Grandmother gently told me. I gave her a little smile.
I'm glad that I have met my grandparents. If I haven't met my grandparents I would probably have to rely on myself more or share more of my load with my husbands, which I didn't want to.
"As of about your grandfathers, they probably told you that we didn't have the best relationship at that time. Since back then they were very arrogant and it was hard to deal with them.
Meanwhile, I was forced by my parents into a courtship that many brides quit." She continued.
"I also wanted to quit, but I was blackmailed by my parents which did damage to my mental health. When I married them they started being respectful, but my mental health didn't get better since I would get severely stressed."
I could tell that she kept some details out. I didn't want to pry too much into details because I know it's is difficult to remember during a hard time.
It made me wonder, how my father survived living in this environment.
" The only thing that we shared is marriage, duty, and child." She finished.
"But for some reason, you still choose to retire with my grandfathers?" The last question I decided to ask about her relationship with my grandfathers.
"Well because during the marriage they started to change for the better and after my second husband's death, they were trying to win my heart." She smiled when she said that.
I'm glad that my grandfathers changed and started leaving a peaceful life with my grandmother.
Later we changed into a lighter topic that would lift out mood. I almost forgot that my husbands wanted to get me a second husband and I still wanted to discuss with them more.
I offered my grandmother to stay for the night so she would rest before going back to her residence, my grandmother gladly accepted the offer.
I walked backed to our bedroom and I saw my husbands were already preparing to go to bed.
They gave me a small smile and asked if I needed help to undress. I just nodded.
It's pretty hard to remove a corset without someone else help and my husbands are always help me remove the corset.
"How was your talk with grandmother?" Nathaniel asked.
"It's was good I answered."
They are hallway there removing my corset.
"I guess, I'm just afraid." I quietly uttered.
"Hmm?" One of my husbands hummed.
"About getting a second husband, I don't to want to get another husband because I'm simply afraid of what kind surprises he might bring. I just feel that I'm unprepared." I explained to my husbands.
They only smiled. One of them held my head as the other one just kissed my head as a quiet sign that they understood my worries.
I smiled and hugged one of my husbands.
