*Chapter Two* {Always and Forever}
"Welcome to the dark side of New Orleans, a supernatural playground where the living are easily lost, and the dead stick around to play." A tour guide describes to his crowd.
"Spooky" Henrik mutters standing beside Klaus. His older brother smirks slightly. The hybrid walks down the street and Henrik follows him. The two were looking for any signs of the Deveraux sisters or Marcel Gerard, whoever they found first. "Witch" Henrik points out a true witch amongst the crowd.
Klaus looks in the direction Henrik found the witch. The girl was already looking at them. She's packing her things, obviously hoping to leave before they approached her. Klaus smirks and walks towards her table.
"Good afternoon" Klaus said sitting at the table, Henrik stands behind him. "Time for one more?"
"I have nothing to say to you" The witch spat. Henrik raises his eyebrows at her while Klaus's grin deepens.
"Oh, now that's not very amiable, is it? You don't even know me." Klaus tells her.
"I know what you are. Half-vampire, half-beast. You're the hybrid" She said before looking at Henrik. "And you're the resurrected"
"You've heard of me?" Henrik asked frowning his eyebrows.
"The dead witch child brought back to life as a man, yeah, I've heard of you" She nods.
"Huh, she's heard of me" Henrik smirks nudging his brother. "You're not the only popular one" Klaus rolls his eyes at his brother and regains the witches attention. Henrik just smirked and looked around feeling as if he's a hundred feet tall.
"I'm the Original hybrid, actually" Klaus corrects her. "But that's a long story for another time."
"We're looking for someone, a pair of witches, their sisters" Henrik said making her look up at him. "Perhaps you might be able to help us find them. Jane-Anne and Sophie Deveraux"
"Sorry, I don't know" She shakes her head but the two of them obviously know she's lying. They could see it in her eyes, her small reaction to the names.
"Well, now that's a fib, isn't it?" Klaus leans over the table. He grabs the witches hand. "Now, you see, we know that you're a true witch amongst this sea of poseurs, s enough with the fabrications. I've quite a temper" Klaus warns her. She gives him an annoyed, disgusted look and withdraws her hand from his grip.
"Witches don't talk outta school in the Quarter. The vampire won't allow it. Those are the rules. I don't break Marcel's rules." She tells him. Henrik visibly perks at the sound of Marcel's name knowing that he's one of the people their looking for.
"Marcel's rules?" Klaus questions interested. "Where do you suppose we might find Marcel?" The witch looks from Klaus to Henrik and back to the Original Hybrid.
"Try the bar down the road" She suggests. Henrik laughs.
"Could you be a little more specific, darling? There's at least three bars every five steps." He exaggerates slightly. The witch sighs and points out the bar. "Thank you for your time" Henrik says before patting his brother on the back. Klaus nods to the witch, stands and follows his brother towards the bar.
Once they enter they find Marcel instantly. He's on the stage singing karaoke. Henrik didn't think he was that bad, he was honestly enjoying the experience. The vibe of the bar is uplifting and happy, a party. He liked it very much.
Klaus, on the other hand, couldn't find it in himself to even smile. There in front of him is the man he saved when he was just a boy. The man that was a slave. A man he took under his wing and raised in his own image. A man he thought was dead turns out to be very alive.
The two brothers watch Marcel jump off the stage, a shit eating grin on his face as he walked to his comrades. They all seemed to be having a good job when Marcel tenses slightly. He turns his head, his gaze locking with Klaus'.
"Klaus" Marcel says turning towards him. Henrik notices a large group of people watching the interaction carefully. He hoped that Klaus wouldn't do anything stupid. While Klaus can't be killed, he is a little more vulnerable.
"Marcel" Klaus greets.
"Must be a hundred years since that nasty business with your papa" Marcel grins slightly standoffish
"Has it been that long?" Klaus raises his eyebrows. The two men approach each other slowly. Henrik keeps an eye on Marcel's friends.
"The way I recall it, he ran you outta town. Left a trail of dead vampires in his wake." Marcel remembers.
"And yet out fortunate you managed to survive. My father, I'm afraid, I recently incinerated to dust." Klaus tells him slightly too aggressively for Marcel's friends. They call stand up and move closer to them. Henrik tenses and moves closer to his brother as well. Marcel glances at Henrik but doesn't say anything.
"Well, it I'd known you were coming back into town, if I had a heads up-"
"What, Marcel?" Klaus snapped moving extremely close to Marcel. "What would you have done?" Klaus challenges.
"I'd have thrown you a damn parade" Marcel grins widely. The entire bar relaxes instantly as the two of them hug each other tightly. "Niklaus Mikaelson. My mentor, my savior, my sire. Let's get you a drink" Marcel said wrapping his arm around Klaus's neck. Henrik clears his throat.
"Marcel" Klaus steps away from him and turns towards his youngest brother. "Allow me to introduce my brother, Henrik" Marcel frowns his eyebrows.
"I heard rumors about you, I didn't think it was true" Marcel said. Henrik smirks and gives Klaus a look. This is two people who have heard of him. Klaus rolls his eyes knowing what was on his mind. "How did you come back to life?" He wonders curiously.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" Henrik smirks at him. He didn't trust Marcel, not yet, and neither did Klaus.
They weren't ready to tell him about Claire, not yet. They both knew they wouldn't be able to keep her a secret forever, especially with her wondering about New Orleans with their other brothers looking for the Deveraux sisters. However, they would try and keep her to themselves until they can find out more about Marcel and his... 'empire'.
Plus, nothing stays a secret in the supernatural world. They knew that rumors of Claire would have spread across the world, the infamous mate of the Mikaelson's. However, they took extensive measures to make sure she was just a rumor.
Marcel and Henrik stare at each other. Henrik could see Marcel trying to intimidate him but it didn't work. Henrik's spent over a thousand years on the Other Side. He's witnessed events that would make the boy shit his pants.
Eventually, Marcel grins and laughs. The two brothers know it's just a way for him to divert the tension. Marcel doesn't trust Henrik and Henrik is alright with that. He's not here to please Marcel, he's just trying to keep his brother in line. A useless task since he knew Klaus would do what Klaus wanted but it gave Claire a sense of peace and that's all that mattered.
"Family of Klaus is family of mine" Marcel declared. Henrik simply smiles. Marcel looks back to Klaus. "Come, let's have a drink" Marcel invites the two brothers. Klaus and Henrik glance at each other before following Marcel to a private table. Both of them notice how their surrounded by Marcel's... Friends.
"It is good to see you!" Marcel exclaims to Klaus. He pours them both a drink along with one for himself.
"It's good to be home. Although please tell me the current state of Bourbon Street is not your doing." Klaus smiles and Marcel chuckles.
"Something's gotta draw in the out-of-towners, otherwise we'd all go hungry." Marcel explains simply.
"I see your friends are daywalkers" Klaus notes observing a few vampires with daylight rings.
"Yeah, yeah, I shared the secret of your daylight ring with a few buddies. Just the inner circle, though... the family" Marcel shrugs.
"Tell me, how did you find a witch willing to make daylight rings?" Klaus wonders.
"I got the witches around here wrapped around my finger." Marcel brags.
"Is that so?" Henrik pipes up. Marcel looks at him. "We're looking for a witch, a pair of them, their sisters" He explains.
"Jane-Anne Deveraux" Klaus tells him. "And her sister Sophie. Has some business with us." Marcel glances at his followers.
"I can help you with Jane-Anne" Marcel smirks. "You two oughta come with me." He laughs excitedly. "Showtime!" The brothers glance at each other before following Marcel out of the bar.
While Henrik and Klaus were finding and then conversing with Marcel Gerard, Claire was trying to find Sophie and Jane-Anne. Of course she wasn't trying to find them alone, she never went anywhere alone, not since meeting her mates.
"All I'm saying is that they're the ones who wanted us to come here, I figured they'd make it a little easier for us to find them." Kol complied again. His arm wraps around Claire neck tucking her into his side. She rolls her eyes but smiles while wrapping her arm around his waist.
Elijah walks slightly ahead of them while Finn walks slight behind Claire and Kol. They had been walking around New Orleans trying to find the witch sisters with little to no luck. While Claire didn't mind the constant dead ends, seeing as it is a way for her to see the city and all it's beauty, Kol was getting a little grumpy.
"Lets stop in here, get a drink." Elijah suggests knowing they could use a break. Claire agrees knowing a bottle of bourbon would cheer Kol up. Finn agreed as well wanting to get out of the crowd and do something to get Kol to shut up.
Elijah opens the door to a place called Rousseau's. Claire escapes Kol's graps. She kisses Elijah on the cheek before entering the joint. Finn, Kol and finally, Elijah, walk in after her.
Claire takes a moment to observe her surroundings. It's a simple place. There's tables filled with people and then a bar. Nothing special.
Elijah walks past his brothers and places a gentle hand on Claire's back. She instantly looks up at him. He smiles at her and kisses her forehead before leading her towards the bar. She takes a seat with Elijah on her left and Kol on her right. Finn opted to sit on Elijah's left as he had had enough of Kol's jabbering.
"So, what brings you guys to the Big Easy?" A bartender comes up to them. Claire looks at her name tag seeing her name is Camille.
"Just looking for a drink, it's been a long day." Claire told her.
"What's your poison?" Camille grins raising her eyebrow at Claire.
"Two Bourbon's, one Scotch and one Jack and Coke please" Claire orders.
"Coming right up" Camille nods going to get the desired drinks.
"So, what do you think these witches want? They've got us in New Orleans, now where are they?" Kol wonders.
"I guess we'll find out when we find them" Claire says reaching for his hand. He gives it to her while leaning over to kiss her forehead.
Camille notices the little interaction and frowns her eyebrows in curiosity. She had seen the one in the suit give the girl the same type of affection this one did. The one in the suit didn't look the least bit jealous. She wondered if they were all together.
"Two Bourbons" Camille said handing one to Elijah and one to Kol. "One Scotch" She said handing it to Finn. "And a Jack and Coke" Camille said giving the final drink to Claire. Claire nods impressed. She had told her the drinks but not who they were going too. "I'm just that good" Camille jokes. Claire grins. "So, are you in town for business or pleasure?" Camille asks.
"We actually just moved here" Claire said told her. "I've never been in town but these two have lived here before." Kol rolls his eyes while Elijah smiles fondly.
"Really, when?" Camille asks looking at Elijah.
"Oh, it feels like a hundred years ago." Elijah smiles at her.
"I just moved here myself. What brought you back?" Camille asked.
"Wanted a fresh start" Claire told her. "Thought New Orleans would be good seeing as some of my fiancé's loved this city very much at one time." Camille notes her plural form of fiancé.
"Rough past?" Camille asked sympathetically. Claire shrugs slightly.
"Others have had worse" Claire tells her vaguely. Camille instantly picks up on the tenseness that settles among the four people in front of her.
"Sorry, bartender with a grad degree in psychology. Total cliché." Camille easily eases the tension.
"Listen, Camille, we're looking for someone" Elijah speaks up. "A friend of ours. They work here, Jane-Anne and Sophie Deveraux. Any idea where we might find her?" Claire glances at Elijah wondering how he knew they worked here. He simply gives her an I-Know-Everything look. She smirks and rolls her eyes.
"No" Camille shakes her head after thinking for a few moments. "But I know someone who might" She tells them.
Across town, Henrik and Klaus follow Marcel and his group of friends and nightwalkers around the city. Marcel walks in the middle of the two brothers mainly talking to Klaus seeing as Henrik wasn't really up for conversation. He rarely has one with anybody outside the family.
"Oh, how's your family?" Marcel questioned.
"Growing closer with each other by the day" Klaus tells him.
"Oh, really?" Marcel asked truly surprised. "Everyone undaggered then?" He asked. Klaus smirks knowing who Marcel truly wanted to know about.
"Yes, everyone's been undaggered for quite a few years now" Klaus tells him. Marcel slowly nods taking in that little bit of information.
"Well, what's mine is yours, as always. Even my nightwalkers, the riff-raff" He said. Klaus and Henrik notices the vampires jumping and speeding all over the place.
"They're hardly subtle, are they?" Henrik notes.
"It's the Quarter" Marcel tells him. "Ain't no such thing as subtle, baby" He says in a lighter tone. He then whistles and the crowd around him begins to close in and cheer. Klaus steps closer to his brother, the two of them watching the show in front of them.
"Can we move this along? I'd like to see our mate sometime soon" Henrik mutters lowly to Klaus.
"Relax, we'll see her soon" Klaus whispers back giving him a grin. While his exterior is calm and calculating, his inner beast yearned for his mate. He always hated being away from her for long periods of time, even if it was only a few hours.
"Jane-Anne Deveraux!" Marcel shouts regaining the brother's attention. "Give it up for Jane-Anne! Come on, lets hear it!" Marcel shouts. The crowd gets rowdier.
"I'd stay close, brother" Klaus mutters keeping a watchful eye on the number of vampires around them. "I don't trust them" He knew how vulnerable Henrik is at the moment. While he has proven to be an exceptional warlock, he is severely outnumbered, even with Klaus on his side. Klaus knew he could take on everyone here blindfolded but taking everyone on as well as protecting his very human brother would prove to be a challenge. He also knew that if he brought Henrik home with even a scratch on him, Claire would have his head.
"Jane-Anne Deveraux, you have been accused of the practice of witchcraft beyond the bounds of the rules set forth, and enforced, by me." Marcel declares. "How do you plead?" Before she can answer, Marcel jogs back to the Mikaelson's. "Was that convincing? I studied law back in the '50s. Hold that thought" He returns to Jane-Anne. "Seriously Jane, tick-tock. You know the drill. How do you plead?"
"I didn't do anything" Jane-Anne answers. The crowd laughs at her.
"That's a lie" Marcel calls her out. "You know it, I know it, and you hate that I know it. It drives you witches crazy that I'm aware of your every move. That you can't do magic in this town without getting caught. So, why don't we just cut to the chase, huh? You tell me what magic you're brewing. I mean, tell me. I'll grant you leniency." Marcel bargains with the witch who couldn't stop glancing at Klaus. "Hey, I am, after all, a merciful man."
"Rot in hell, monster" Jane-Anne spat. Marcel simply smiles.
"I'll tell you what. I'll give you one more chance..." Marcel paces slightly. Before anybody could do anything, he swings a branch he stole from a tree and sliced Jane-Anne's throat open. Henrik and Klaus's eyes widened at he action. "Or not" Marcel smirks. The crowd cheers and celebrates while Marcel goes back to Klaus and Henrik.
"What was that?" Klaus growled gripping Marcel's shoulder tightly. A few vampires get tense but Marcel quickly diffuses the situation so no one loses their heads, literally.
"Hey, come walk with me" Marcel says walking in between the two of them again."The witches aren't allowed to do magic here, she broke the rules." Marcel explained.
"I told you we wanted to talk to her" Klaus snapped.
"Hey, I'm sorry, I got caught up in the show" Marcel smirks but the two of them knew it was a lie. "Those witches, they think that they still have power in this town. I have to show them that they don't. I never waste an opportunity for a show of force, another lesson that I learned from you. And besides, anything that you could've gotten outta her, I can find out for you two, and I will. I promise."
"Well, whatever it was, doesn't matter anymore, does it?" Klaus smiles. Marcel grins and nods.
"Good, good. Then let's eat, cause all that spilled blood makes me hungry" Marcel laughs and wonders off.
"Well, this town sure is interesting" Henrik mutters. The two of them begin to walk away from the crowd. "Witches aren't allowed to do magic? What kind of horse shit is that?" He growled.
"I don't know but I'd like to find out... In the mean time, I'd avoid doing any spells." Klaus suggests.
"Come to that conclusion all on your own did you?" Henrik snarks. Klaus smirks and chuckles lightly. "Did you forget out mate is a witch?" Klaus sighs and comes to a stop.
"If you think I, or any of our brothers, would allow even one of them to touch you or our beloved mate, you're terribly mistaken." Klaus reassures him. "Just don't give them a reason to attack you."
"I'm not the one who goes around and purposefully pisses people off" Henrik says as Klaus begins to walk down the street.
"You see, dear brother, I can piss people off because they can't do anything to me. You're more vulnerable therefore you need to be more careful. So be a good chap and play by the rules... for now." Klaus winks at his brother.
"We should tell the others Jane-Anne has been killed" Henrik said pulling out his phone.
"You do that, I'm going to get a drink." Klaus says walking into Rousseau's.
"If you think I, or any of our brothers would allow them to touch you, you're terribly mistake, oh look, a bar, good luck fending for yourself, brother" Henrik mumbles mockingly under his breath as he scrolls through his phone looking for Claire's contact.
"This place is amazing" Claire said laughing to herself as they enjoyed New Orleans at night. She had just gotten off of the phone with the hybrid, Alison. Alison is usually the hybrid in charge when the Mikaelson's were out of town.
Claire had wanted to check in on what was going on. She wanted to make sure that not only the hybrids were settling in well but her daughter, Madelyn. She hated that she had spent the day away from her daughter but it was necessary.
None of them felt comfortable bringing Madelyn on a witch hunt. Especially since none of them knew the town anymore. They needed to see how things were run. Seek out the types of dangers that lurk around the corners.
However, Claire couldn't wait to bring Madelyn into the town. She knew her daughter would love it. Her little girl is extremely out going and would be just as fascinated with everything just like Claire.
Kol never really cared for New Orleans but even he had to admit he was having a good day. Seeing the constant smile on Claire's face helped. He doubted he could ever truly hate something that gave her so much happiness.
"Henrik," Claire smiles answering her phone. "How are you and Klaus?" She questions.
"We're fine, Angel. We found Marcel, we've been with him most of the day." Henrik explained.
"Oh, really?" She asked. She lead her mates off to the side and away from everyone. "They found Marcel" She told them.
"And Jane-Anne" Henrik added.
"You found Jane-Anne?" Claire asked. This really caught their attention. "Did you get to talk to her?"
"No, we didn't get the chance. Marcel killed her" Claire frowned her eyebrows. "Marcel rules here, he has a strict no magic policy. Apparently casting spells gives you the death sentence so be careful" Henrik warned.
"I'll be fine. We need to find Sophie before she does something to piss Marcel off and gets herself killed" Claire says stress fully.
"We'll find her, Angel, don't worry." Claire sighs and nods.
"Where are you? We should find her together" Claire said not wanting to be separated from him and Klaus any longer.
"A place called Rousseau's" Henrik told her. Claire smiles remembering the place from earlier.
"I know where it is, we'll be there shortly." Claire said before hanging up.
"You alright, Princess?" Finn asked grabbing her hand. She leans into him, her body relaxing slightly.
"I'll be fine, come on" Claire said pulling him along. "We're meeting up with Henrik and Klaus. Hopefully we'll be able to find Sophie" She mutters.
