*Chapter Twenty Two* {Reigning Pain}
The transition of power from Marcel to Claire and the Mikaelson's wasn't the smoothest thing in the world. The French Quarter vampires were still very much loyal to Marcel and were reluctant to be loyal to anyone else, to follow someone else's orders.
No longer is Claire a simple pregnant girl walking down Bourbon Street. Not that she ever was a simple pregnant girl to begin with.
No matter where she went she had eyes on her. Though no one dared approach her, in fact, they steered clear of her. They knew the power she held, not only as a siphoner and leader of the but as the fiance to the Mikaelson brothers.
"Why don't we get something to eat?" Claire suggests looking at Klaus. Madelyn is at school and everyone else had their own things going on. Claire wanted to get out of the house and go for a walk. Klaus would rather her go for a walk within the property but she wanted to something different than walk around the plantation.
"Anything you want" He kisses the top of her head. She grins and pulls him into Rousseau's. She smiles and gives Cami a wave before pulling Klaus into a booth. Claire sits on the inside with Klaus sitting beside her. Cami gives them each a drink before taking Claire's order.
"I've been thinking about inviting my mom to come visit" Claire brings up suddenly. "Caroline keeps hinting at it and I've been thinking about he ever since I returned"
"Are you wanting just a simple visit or are you going to try and patch things up?" Klaus asks. "She hasn't always been very understanding or open minded when it comes to our world" Klaus reminds her.
"I know but I think it's been long enough. I mean we haven't been on good terms since before I got pregnant with Madelyn and even then it was rocky. Caroline and mom have a great relationship right now and I want that. I want a good relationship with her." Claire rambles slightly. "I've changed since high school and Caroline swears she's changed too."
"If this is what you want then we'll find a way to make it happen" He promises her. She gives him a small smile and rests her head on his shoulder. "If she hurts you again she's never stepping foot in New Orleans again, I don't care how good of a relationship she has with Caroline"
"Deal" She smiles up at him. "I'll give her a call when we get back" He nods kissing her forehead.
"Well, isn't this just adorable" Klaus's head snaps to the side as Hayley Marshal stands by their table. Claire sits up and tenses slightly as she slides into the seat across from them. "When I head the Mikaelson's were back in town I had to admit, I was surprised. Then I hear Marcel is no longer in power but you, I guess congratulations are in order"
"I didn't know you were in New Orleans" Claire says.
"Just outside actually" Hayley said with a shrug. "In the Bayou"
"With the rest of you werewolf friends, I assume" Claire says. Hayley raises an eyebrow and Claire smirks slightly. "What? Did you think I didn't know about the Crescent Wolf Pack?" She asks.
"You claim to be merciful and to be caring yet you do nothing to break the curse on the werewolves" Hayley glared slightly. Klaus growls warningly. Hayley ignores him while Claire grabs his hand and gives it a gentle squeeze.
"We're been busy" Claire answers simply. "We've only just dethroned Marcel. We haven't had the time to discuss the Bayou and the wolves that reside within it"
"Be sure that you do and quickly, they haven't had a voice before but they do now. I won't allow their mistreatment any longer" Hayley tells her sternly.
"You'll allow anything that we let you allow" Claire tells her simply. "You may be their voice, their leader, their minister and I'm willing to work with you. However, I do not trust you and I do not take orders from you, be sure to remember that the next time we meet. Oh, and be sure make an appointment next time. Being Queen takes up a lot of my time, you'll have to wait like everyone else"
Hayley stares at Claire who stares back. Neither of them bend to the other. Neither of them willing to submit to the other.
"Will you be joining them?" Cami asks coming up to the table. Claire raises a challenging eyebrow.
"No, just visiting" Hayley says standing up. She bows mockingly before leaving.
"Peachy" Cami says sarcastically.
"You have no idea" Claire grumbles. Cami refills her water, makes small talk before moving on.
"This suits you" Klaus tells her. She glances at him. "Being in charge" He clarifies. "You handled her splendidly"
"I'm surprised you didn't chime in" She comments.
"You had it handled" He grins lifting her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles lightly. "I love you" He mutters. She smiles leaning over to give him a small kiss.
"Umm, excuse me" Klaus growls in annoyance. Claire smiles at the vampire. He's one of Marcel's daywalkers. "Marcel wants to speak with you two"
"Why doesn't he come tell us himself?" Klaus questions before smirking. "Oh, that's right" He grins. "The sun is still up" Claire rolls her eyes and slaps his arm.
"Is he at the Abattoir?" Claire questions. The vampire nods before leaving. They pay for the food and drinks before making their way towards Marcel. When they arrive they're greeted by Davina who leads them to where the former king hides from the sun.
"The humans have called a meeting" Marcel says getting straight to the point. "They're not exactly thrilled with the new status quo"
"How unfortunate for them" Klaus says with a shrug.
"Look, It's your show mow. But, you wanna know how I built what I built? Politics. A little diplomacy goes a long way, as if you didn't already know that" Marcel says looking at Claire.
"May they be smarter than you in their quest" Claire says and Marcel simply nods.
"The meeting's in an hour, I'd like to attend if it's alright with you" Marcel says bowing his head slightly. "They know me, they're used to working with me. I can help things go smoothly"
"And why should we trust you?" Claire asks.
"Because I know if I mess up one more time you'll have my heart extracted or my head removed" Marcel tells her.
"I don't think it would be that quick but I'm glad you understand the severity of the situation you'll be in should you make another mistake" Claire nods. "I'll have your daylight ring brought to you"
"Love-" Klaus goes to protest but Claire continues talking.
"And afterwards you'll return it to us." She says sternly. Marcel presses his lips together but nods. "Where's the meeting?"
"St. Anne's" He tells her.
"We'll meet you there" Claire says before leaving with Klaus behind her.
"Are you sure you want him there?" Klaus asks.
"He makes good points. Things will hopefully go smoother with him there. If he proves to be useful he'll be one step closer to having his ring back full time" She says simply. "Despite not having his throne or ring, Marcel still has a great deal to lose. His friends, his loyalists, Davina, take your pick. I don't believe he'll do anything to put them in danger, anymore danger that is"
"Have I told you how proud I am of you?" He asks turning her towards him. She smiles resting her hands on his chest.
"Once or twice" She mutters before kissing him. "Come on, I want to check on the others before going to this meeting" He nods and the two of them make their way back to the plantation.
"Angel" Kol grins instantly greeting her. She grins and hugs him tightly. "I missed you"
"I missed you too, love" She kisses him softly. After pulling away, Kol leads her into their home.
Unfortunately Henrik wasn't home. He, along with most of her coven, have gone off to the French Quarter witches. They've been working to make peace and compromises. Hopefully with more freedom, but not so much that it would cause problems, things will run smoothly.
Penelope's dragged Kai out to the barn and Claire didn't even want to think about what they would be doing at the moment. Caroline and Enzo were missing and again Claire didn't want to know the details of their alone time.
"Knock, knock" Claire says smiling at Elijah who's been cooped up in the study all day. He looks up and instantly brightens when he sees her.
"How was your afternoon with Klaus?" He questions her.
"Eventful" She rolls her eyes entering the room. He pushes his chair away from the desk.
"What happened?" He asks. She sits on the desk and rests her feet on his lap. He caresses her calves gently.
"Apparently Hayley Marshall's been lingering in the Bayou" She tells him.
"You went to the Bayou?" He asks. She shakes her head and explains the interaction. "I'll make sure that she stays in the Bayou. I don't trust her to not start trouble around here"
"Neither do I but she does have a point. We have to do something about the werewolves" She tells him.
"And we will, we just haven't had the time yet. They've been in their situation for years, they can wait a little while longer" Elijah says pulling her off of the desk and onto his lap, her legs folded on either side of her. She giggles softly and cuddles in his embrace.
"Where's Finn?" She asks quietly.
"In the library most likely." He mutters quietly. "He spends a lot of time there during the days. Although I've been able to get him to participate in business more, give him something to do"
"I'm worried he's not happy here" Claire whispers.
"My brother is a very simple person, Elskan" He tells her gently. "He enjoys his books and the occasional conversation. Other than that he tends to keep to himself. He's not like Kol or Klaus, he finds comfort in his alone time"
Claire relaxes at his words. She knew they were true because she knows Finn. However, she always worries that it isn't enough. Like he could be happier, she could be doing more for him.
"There's a meeting with the human faction in a little bit, I'd like it if you came" She said sitting up.
"Of course I'll be there" He nods kissing her forehead. She smiles softly.
"I'm going to see Finn and then we'll leave" He nods releasing her as she stands. She slips out of the room and glides towards the library.
When she arrives she smiles seeing him completely engrossed in a story. She leans against the entrance simply gazing at him. His expression changes slightly as he reads down the page.
"Would you like for me to read to you?" Finn asks. Claire blushes slightly knowing she's been caught. He closes the book and stands. In a flash, he's in front of her.
"I have to attend a meeting with a human faction in a little bit. I'm taking Elijah and Klaus with me, I was hoping you would stay and make sure nothing happens while we're gone." Finn frowns his eyebrows slightly. "Hayley Marshall approached me and Klaus today. I'm not sure if she has other intentions and I don't want her anywhere near here"
"And Kol?" Finn asks.
"He's going to watch over Madelyn. He's leaving when we do" Finn nods kissing her forehead.
"Nothing'll happen" He promises her. "I'll make sure of it"
"Thank you" She whispers giving him a small peck before leaving for the meeting.
"They're waiting inside" Marcel says waiting outside the church for Claire.
"Enjoying the sun, mate?" Klaus teases. Marcel gives him an unamused look while Claire rolls her eyes.
"Shall we?" Elijah motions towards the church while offering his arm to Claire. She smiles and takes it.
"Marcel" Father Kieran greets. "Thank you for getting them here. Elijah, Klaus, Claire, thank you for coming" Klaus nods his head. "We are aware of the change in the leadership in your community and we thought it was time to make the appropriate introductions" Kieran says.
"We wanna be sure you understand how things work around here" The mayor says looking at Klaus.
"Is that so?" Klaus wonders tilting his head and the mayor nods.
"What the mayor means is that we just want some insurance that this new development isn't going to endanger our city or its inhabitants" Kieran tells Klaus anxiously.
Klaus chuckles to himself with a large grin amused that these men believe he is in charge. As much as he would like to believe that himself he knew it wasn't true. Every time he takes matters into his own hands Claire is quick to remind him that he can't just do what he thinks it right without consulting the family first, specifically her.
"Look, you freaks do your thing, and we'll look the other way" The sheriff pipes in. Klaus clenches his jaw and sends Marcel a look.
Anger bubbles within Claire. How bold, or incredibly stupid, this man must be to talk this way to the strongest creatures in the world. The Originals could wipe New Orleans of humans and there would be nothing they could do.
"As long as our pockets stay full, we won't have a problem" He says cockily. Claire laughs shaking her head. The mayor and the sheriff glare at her while Kieran seems even more anxious. Elijah growls lowly not liking the looks the men are giving his mate.
"There are rules" Kieran brings up hesitantly. "No feeding on the locals. Don't bring any unwanted attention to the city. History has proven that we can co-exist peacefully. However, if you cross the line..." Kieran's voice drowns out.
"You answer to us" The sheriff said getting into Klaus's face. He then turns to Claire. "Think you can handle that, sweetheart?" Claire raises an eyebrow at him while Klaus laughs.
"Ok, I'm sorry, let me get this straight" Klaus pats the sheriff's arm patronizingly. "We're to play supplicant to this pompous ass and his ridiculous group of petty thieves?"
"Klaus" Claire says warningly. He glances at her.
"Who is this woman who thinks she can speak among men?" The sheriff questions.
"I'd watch your words, sheriff" Elijah warns. "Her word is law."
"Should she want your head on a silver platter, I'll be all too happy to give it to her" Klaus adds.
"Gentlemen" Claire says stepping away from Elijah, which makes him extremely uncomfortable. "The last thing anybody wants is a war" Claire says hoping they could all at least agree on that. "But don't for a moment think we answer to anybody but ourselves. No feeding on the locals is something I can agree with. Unwanted attention is something that we can't always control but should it happen then we'll deal with it. Those who break this line you speak of will be dealt with on our terms, if at all. If you have a problem with that then you can cry about it as you fall asleep knowing there's nothing you can do about it." Claire tells them. "We're not Marcel and I think it would do you well to remember that." Claire turns her attention to the sheriff. "I'm a fair person but I do not tolerate disrespect, so should you ever talk down to me again I will give my fiance my wish for your head and he will give it to me. Then we will appoint someone more suitable for your position. Be careful gentlemen, it's a new day and a new leadership"
With a final look, Claire leaves the church with her mates and Marcel following her. She pauses right before entering the limo. She turns to Marcel.
"Thank you for setting up the meeting, return your ring to Davina when you get back to the Abattoir" She says before entering the vehicle.
Elijah and Klaus enter after her. Before either of them can say anything about the meeting Claire's phone rings. She digs it out of her pocket and smiles seeing Kol's name.
"Hey, we're on our way to the school" She tells him. "How's Madelyn?" She asks.
"That's the thing, Angel" Kol mutters. Claire tenses. "She's not here"
