*Chapter Three*
Claire smiles instantly as Henrik and Klaus come into view. The two were standing towards the back of Rousseau's. They were talking too quietly for Claire to hear. Henrik notices her first and then Klaus. They both visibly relaxed upon seeing her.
"What's wrong?" Claire asked noting their tenseness.
"We found Sophie" Henrik told her in a low tone. Claire instantly perks.
"Really? Where is she?" Claire asked looking around.
"In the alley behind here," Henrik explained. "We tried to get her to tell us why she brought us here but Marcel is having us followed" He nods to the bar. Claire turns and sees two men watching them. "She won't say anything with other vampires around."
"These witches are terrified to make a move with the vampires around," Klaus informs them.
"I wonder why" Elijah mutters stepping to the side blocking the two vampires from being able to see Claire.
"Marcel brags about how he has them under control, his control," Henrik told his brothers. "He won't go into detail"
"Perhaps I was asking too kindly the last time," Klaus grumbles glaring towards the bar. "Maybe those gentlemen know something" Klaus smirks walking towards the bar. Claire moves in front of him instantly gaining his attention.
"Let's just focus on Sophie" Claire pleaded. "I want to know what she has to say and go home." Klaus's expression softens slightly. He caresses her face and kisses her forehead.
"I want to know why Marcel is having me and Henrik followed." He mutters to her. "The last thing I need is for him to get too comfortable with the power he thinks he has over us," Klaus explains to her. If Marcel becomes too comfortable around them then one of his day or nightwalkers could try to do something to Claire in an attempt to impress Marcel. That would start a war that would destroy New Orleans. "I won't be long" He promises before walking around her.
"Why don't I believe him?" She mutters her head turning to watch him.
"Are you two gentlemen following me?" Klaus asks coming up behind them.
"Marcel said we're your guides," One of them told Klaus. Klaus clenches his jaw. He roughly grabs both of them. They try to keep the pain off of their farces.
"Oh, he did, did he?" Klaus muses sarcastically. "Well then, let me be exceedingly clear about something: if either of you follows me again, you'll do so without the benefit of a spine" Klaus warns them. His grip tightens and they wince as Camille, the bartender walks up to them.
"Sorry for the wait. If you're here for the gumbo, I'm about to break your heart. We just ran out." Camille warns them. Klaus releases the two men, grabs a hundred dollars bill and tosses it on the bar.
"Your oldest Scotch for my two friends here" Klaus orders. She takes the bill, smiles, and nods. "If Marcel wants to know what I'm up to, he can ask me himself" He growled before walking away from them and out the bar.
"He's going to cause trouble isn't he?" Claire mutters rubbing her face. "Looks like the peaceful days are over," Claire said smiling at them sarcastically. She knew they were over when they decided to move to New Orleans but she thought they would have some time to relax in the city before everything started up.
"Do you want one of us to go with him?" Finn asked her.
"Even if you do, I doubt you would be able to stop him from whatever he is planning," Claire said tiredly.
"Well, I'll make sure he comes back at a reasonable time" Finn grins at her. She smiles back and nods. He kisses her softly before leaving after Klaus.
Elijah notices the two men at the bar were gone. He listens intently and hears them outside with who he assumes is Sophie. He shares a look with Kol, who could hear the interaction behind the bar as well, before slipping out the back.
"Want to get another drink, darling?" Kol suggests wrapping his arm around her neck, holding her close. She relaxes against him.
"I think a booth would be more comfortable," She said.
"A booth it is then" Kol nods and leads her over to an empty one. Henrik sits across from them but extends his legs to lean against hers. Claire smiles knowingly at him. He gives her a wink. Before Camille could come and get their order Elijah walks up to them.
"We need to leave. She has agreed to speak with us but not here" Elijah explains. Claire sighs but nods. Elijah holds his hand out to her and she takes it. He holds it as she climbs out of the booth before kissing her knuckles giving her a comforting smile. He knows she's tired. He wanted to get this over so they could return home.
The four of them walked out to the back where Sophie is waiting for them. Claire looks at her and smiles. She remembers meeting her and her sister at McKinley. Sophie gives her a smaller smile back as she remembers their first meeting as well.
"Are you sure about this, Jane-Anne?" Sophie asked her sister. The two of them sitting in the car right outside the grocery store. Their eyes follow Claire as she, Madelyn, Kol, and Finn walk inside the store.
"Look, I have a friend here and I asked him to keep an eye on her. He thinks we have the perfect opportunity to get them to New Orleans" Jane-Anne told her. Once Claire is out of sight, the sisters look at each other. "You just have to confirm it"
"And then what?" Sophie asked her.
"We get them to New Orleans and we make them help us, by any means necessary," Jane-Anne said strongly. "They're our last hope, we need them." Sophie sighs but nods. The two of them climb out of the car and enter the store. Jane-Anne grabs a cart wanting to seem as if their interaction would be an accident.
"Madelyn you have an entire room full of dolls," Claire told her daughter. "You don't need this one."
"But Mom!" Madelyn whined. "I don't have this one!"
"How do you know?" Claire asked raising her eyebrows at her daughter. "Maybe it's underneath the pile of dirty clothes right next to your hamper" Madelyn's annoyed look turns into an innocent smile. "Put the doll back" Claire ordered. Madelyn pouts. She then notices Kol in the corner of her eye. She grins deviously before racing to him while Claire's back is turned.
"Papa Kol!" Madelyn said in a loud but hushed tone. His face instantly brightens. He bends down and captures her in his arms.
"Hello, Princess" He rests her on his him, a large grin on his face.
"Can I have this doll?" She asks him. He's about to say yes without hesitation when he notices the piercing glare of Claire Forbes
"Maybe for Christmas, Princess," Kol says looking away from Claire. Madelyn pouts and it tugs on his heartstrings.
"Don't you dare" Claire grumbles. Madelyn pulls her best puppy dog face. Claire can see it. She can see the almighty Kol Mikaelson's bending to a 5-year-old's will. Soon, a mischievous smile appears on Kol's face, Madelyn instantly mirrors it knowing she's getting her way.
"You know, if we run really fast, we'll be able to escape Momzilla" Madelyn giggles as Kol slowly sets her down. "Be cool, be cool" Kol mutters. Madelyn nods and lowers her head. One of her arms grips the doll while the other hand holds onto Kol's.
"Kol-" Claire growled turning towards him.
"Run!" Kol shouted. Madelyn squealed and took off. Kol grins widely, following her to the cashier.
"I'm going to strangle him when we get home" Claire growled as Finn walks towards her with milk and eggs.
"Kol?" Finn asked knowingly.
"I seriously underestimated the amount of spoiling I condemned that child too" Claire shakes her head. Finn laughs quietly and sets the items in the cart. He walks around the cart and towards her.
"I'll hold him down for you" Finn mutters. Claire breaks out into a smile and small laugh. He pulls her into his side and kisses the side of her head. "What else do we need?" He asks looking at her list.
"Just some waffle mix," She said pushing the cart out of the aisle. Another cart accidentally runs into hers. Finn instantly tenses and pulls her to him protectively.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" Jane-Anne said smiling at her apologetically.
"It's fine" Claire smiles and rubs Finn's chest. He relaxes slightly.
"Hi, I'm Jane-Anne and this is my sister Sophie. We're new into town, still trying to get the layout" Jane-Anne introduced herself.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Claire and this is my fiancé, Finn" Finn nods to the two sisters. "I hope you like it here, this town has been good to us."
"Well, it's a good thing we chose this town then. We need some luck on our side." Jane-Anne said. Claire smiles understandingly.
"I know how you feel. Maybe we'll see each other around" Claire shrugs.
"Hopefully" Sophie smiles at her. Finn narrows his eyes slightly.
"Have a nice day" Claire said politely before going in search for her waffle mix.
"I'm sorry about your sister," Claire says kindly. Sophie looks down for a moment. "I wish there was something I could have done."
"There is something you can do," Sophie said looking up. Claire tilts her head. "Come with me and I'll explain." Claire nods. She, along with her mates, follow Sophie out of the city and towards a cemetery. Claire goes to continue following her but Elijah grabs Claire and holds her with them at the gate.
"What is it?" Claire asks him. He continues to give Sophie a curious look, wondering why he and his brother, Kol, couldn't enter the cemetery. If they couldn't get in, Claire wasn't going. They weren't about to allow Claire somewhere where they couldn't protect her. She would have Henrik but they wanted to protect her as well.
"This is sacred ground, which means vampires have to be invited in. But, since I'm desperate..." Sophie sighs not believing she's about to invite two Originals into the cemetery. She also knew she would have to invite two more, Klaus and Finn. She truly is desperate. "Come in, both of you." Elijah, Kol, and Henrik stay close to Claire, not trusting Sophie. "We can talk freely here."
"Then I suggest you start talking," Elijah tells her. "What do you want with us? Claire specifically."
"Isn't it obvious?" Sophie asks him. "We have a vampire problem, and we need help. Marcel has an army backing him. The witches have bee trying to fight back. We haven't had much luck until my sisters' friend confirms that the Originals have a mate." Elijah, Kol, and Henrik instantly come to a stop. Elijah steps in front of Claire and Kol pulls her into his side.
"You better have a point" Henrik snapped stepping closer to Sophie.
"Our meeting wasn't an accident" Sophie explained looking at Claire. "We were told where you were and we went to meet you. I have a special gift... of sense when a girl is pregnant"
"What?" Claire whispers, her hand pressing on her stomach. Kol tenses and looks down at her.
"You're pregnant with Klaus's child," Sophie said.
"No, no, no, no" Claire whispers shaking her head. "I can't, I can't be pregnant..." Claire's heart rate escalates immensely.
"I know it's impossible but-"
"Shut up" Henrik snapped as Kol and Elijah try to calm her down. Sophie's eyes widened slightly.
"I can't be pregnant, I'm not ready to do it again" Claire cries burring her head into Kol's chest. "Please tell me it's not true, please" She begs. Kol's eyes clench shut as he holds her tightly. Elijah listens intently. He sighs as he hears the child's heartbeat. It's faint meaning the child was conceived not long ago.
"I'm sorry, Elskan" Elijah whispers. Claire sobs into Kol's chest. Elijah turns to Sophie. "Is there somewhere she can sit? Do you have water?"
"Yes, follow me" Sophie whispers nodding. Kol scoops Claire in his arms and follows Sophie
"It's alright, love, it's alright" Kol whispers as Sophie leads them into a building. Kol goes over to the seating area and sits down. She curls in his lap with Elijah and Henrik on either side of him.
"Here," Sophie said holding out a water bottle. Elijah grabs it as his phone rings. He pulls it out seeing it's his older brother.
"What's going on?" Finn asks the moment Elijah asks. Both he and Klaus could feel Claire's emotions and the sudden plummet they took a few moments ago.
"You and Klaus need to get to the cemetery right outside the city, now" Elijah demanded. Finn didn't respond. He hung up and Elijah knew they were on their way.
Once Elijah put his phone away, he handed the water to Kol and stood up. He adjusted his suit and faced Sophie. Sophie didn't understand what was going on. She knew there would be a shock to the news but she never expected Claire to just break down like that.
"What, precisely, is it that you want and what does it have to do with us?" Elijah questions.
"We want to run Marcel and his vampires out of town. Klaus is the key. Everything Marcel knows about being a vampire, he learned from Klaus. Marcel trusts him, looks up to him, and he won't see the betrayal coming." Sophie explains.
"Yes, well, as I'm sure you're aware, my brother Niklaus doesn't like to be told what to do." Elijah snipped no longer seeing the need to be kind to the woman who may pose a threat to his mate. He didn't like the fact that she and her sister had someone find Claire and then sought her out themselves.
"I'm sure you can convince him," Sophie said. "Marcel drove the werewolves out of town decades ago. Do you really think he's going to welcome a hybrid baby to the neighborhood?" She asks raising her eyebrows. "Convince Klaus to help us, and no one has to know about the newest member of the Original family."
"Are you blackmailing us?" Henrik snapped standing up. "You must be suicidal" He growled.
"I'm desperate," Sophie told corrected him. Before they could continue their conversation, Elijah hears his brothers at the gate.
"Invite my brothers in and we'll continue this conversation," Elijah tells her. Sophie nods walking out of the building and towards the gate. Elijah sighs softly and turns to Claire who's slowly calming down. He sits down beside Kol.
"I can't lose another one" She whispers. Kol closes his eyes resting his head on top of hers.
"You won't" Elijah promises. "You are not losing this child," He says strongly. He reaches over and grabs her hand. "I will burn this city to the ground before I let anything happen to this child." Claire smiles at him softly.
"Claire" Her head turns quickly to see Finn and Klaus. The two brothers speed to their mate. She climbs out of Kol's arms and falls into Klaus's. "What's wrong, love? What happened?" He muttered holding her tightly.
"You're gonna wanna hear what she has to say," Elijah said. Klaus turns his head to Elijah and then to Sophie. He gently pushes Claire into Finn's arms before approaching the witch.
"Sophie Deveraux, what is this?" Klaus asked.
"You know you're famous in this town? Witches tell bedtime stories about the powerful Klaus" Sophie said. Klaus smirks.
"Stop feeding his ego and get to it" Henrik snapped. Sophie glances at him before looking back at Klaus.
"We know Marcel was nothing but an orphan street rat until you made him what is is. And now he's out of control. He does what he wants, he kills who he wants. I'm gonna stop him, and you're gonna help me." Sophie told Klaus. He practically laughs at the witch.
"This is what everything is about? Marcel?" Klaus asks.
"Hear her out" Claire whispers. Klaus's amusement disappears as he looks into her eyes. He can see, as well as feel, her fear, and desperation. He nods slowly and turns back to Sophie.
"Marcel may be able to keep us from practicing real magic in this town, but as keepers of the balance we still know when nature has cooked up something new," Sophie said. Klaus frowns his eyebrows. "For example, I have a special gift..." She hesitates to continue not knowing the reaction she would get. "Of sensing when a girl is pregnant"
"What?" Klaus asks. He instantly turns towards Claire. She nods and leans into Finn. Finn's grip tightens around Claire.
"Listen," Elijah tells his brother. Klaus does as told, for once. His eyes widen and return to Claire as he hears the heartbeat of his child. She holds his gaze for only a moment before looking away. Her arm wraps around her stomach.
"My sister gave her life to perform the spell to get you here-"
"Wait, what?" Henrik asked tilting his head.
"What? Did you think that a small picture of Marcel convinced you to come here?" Sophie asked raising her eyebrows at them. "Claire convinced you to come here but what convinced Claire?"
"The dreams" Claire whispers in realization.
"What dreams?" Elijah asked her.
"I had dreams before coming here. They were of us, here in New Orleans. We were happy. I thought it was Noah sending me a sign that we would be happy coming here." Claire told them.
"It was my sister," Sophie told her. "Because of Jane-Anne's sacrifice, the lives of this girl and her baby are now controlled by us." The atmosphere shifts dramatically. The Mikaelson's are stunned into silence at the nerve of Sophie Deveraux. "If you don't help us take down Marcel, so help me, Claire won't live long enough to see her first maternity dress."
Before Sophie, or anybody could do anything, Kol speeds forward. He grabs Sophie and slams her against the wall, his hand wrapped tightly around her neck, choking her. The instant Sophie's air supply is blocked, so is Claire's. Claire grabs her throat and struggles to breathe.
"Kol!" Elijah shouted speeding to his brother. He rips Kol away from Sophie. The witch falls to the ground gasping for breath. Claire breathes in heavily.
"How dare she threaten our mate!" Kol shouted. "We should kill her" He growled.
"You can't," Elijah told him angrily. Kol goes to snap but Sophie quickly speaks up.
"The spell my sister performed, the one that got her killed?" They all turn to look at her. "It didn't just give Claire dreams, it linked me to her. So anything that happens to me, happens to her, which means her life is in my hands" Sophie snapped. "If I have to hurt Claire, or worse, to ensure that I have your attention, I will."
"You would dare threaten the mate to the Originals?" Elijah asked amused but extremely pissed off.
"I have nothing to lose," Sophie told him. Klaus smirked while Kol laughed.
"I've met many of people who said they had nobody to lose," Kol said walking around Elijah and appearing in front of Sophie. "I'm very thorough, I'll find someone you care about and I'll make them scream for mercy right in front of you," Kol promised her with a sadistic smile, one that struck fear into Sophie's heart.
"Enough of this, if you want Marcel dead, he's dead. I'll do it myself" Elijah offered. Sophie shakes her head.
"No. We can't, not yet" Kol rolls his eyes. "We have a clear plan that we need to follow, and there are rules," Sophie told them.
"How dare you command us" Klaus growled stalking towards her. "Threaten her!" He shouted.
"Enough" Claire steps away from Finn. Klaus stops talking and turns to her. "What's your plan?"
"Angel, don't tell me you're honestly considering working for this witch?" Kol laughs though looks desperately at his mate.
"All you're trying to do is free the witches, right?" Claire asked. Sophie nods. "Why didn't you say so?" Claire smiles softly. "We could have saved all of this trouble if you would have just come to me, from one witch to another, I would have helped you without any trouble"
"You're a witch?" Sophie asks. Claire nods leaving out the specifics knowing how other witches reacted to being in the presence of a Siphoner. "So you'll help us?" She asked hopefully.
"We'll help but not out of the goodness of our hearts but because of you being linked to me." Claire moves closer to Sophie. Her mates tense and move closer. "I hope you realize that once we're unlinked, nothing is stopping my mates from tearing you apart. Normally, I would stop them because I understand you desperate and you're doing what you can to help your coven. I can respect that. What I can't respect, what I won't tolerate, is you not only threatening me but my child's life."
"I just want-"
"I don't want your excuses. You've already made your grave and we will put you in it. But until then, consider us your allies" Claire told her.
Klaus and Kol both smirk sadistically at their mates' words. They knew they not only had her permission but her blessing to take the life that's threatened hers and the babes. Their minds ran wild with ideas.
"What's your plan?" Claire asked her. Sophie sighs and begins to explain.
"Klaus, you need to cement your place in Marcel's world. Get into his inner circle, his daywalkers. That's where we begin. They're his friends, his family. We'll be hitting him where it hurts." Sophie explains.
Klaus turns his head to Claire. She holds Sophie's gaze. Claire wanted to be friends with Sophie and her sister when she and the others were getting ready to move to the city. Claire hasn't been able to become friends with very many witches outside her coven and it looks like this place will be no different.
Claire turns her head to Klaus and gives him a nod. He nods back before looking at Sophie. He moves up to stand beside his mate.
"Better get your affairs in order, your days are numbered" Klaus growls before grabbing Claire and leading her out of the cemetery. There's a limo on waiting on the edge of the road. They all climb in, the limo driving them back to their house.
Kol and Klaus talk about Sophie and her audacity to threaten, to blackmail them. Henrik pipes in every now and then but mainly sits in his anger. Claire sits between Klaus and Elijah. She's holding both of their hands but her mind is wondering.
She wished Sophie and Jane-Anne would have just come to her. She wished they didn't go behind Claire's back. If they could have just been honest from the start, Jane-Anne wouldn't be dead and Sophie wouldn't have signed her death certificate.
"How are you feeling?" Elijah asks Claire quietly. Claire simply rests her head on his shoulder. He kisses her hair and strokes her hand with his thumb. "We'll be home soon" He promises.
It takes less than half an hour to return home. The perimeter is prowling with hybrids. Klaus had called Alison wanting the property protected in case Marcel decided to spy on them.
Once they get inside, Klaus gathers the hybrids to explain the situation. He tells them to stay on the property until he can make a deal with Marcel. A deal that would allow them in the city without problems.
While Klaus talks to the hybrids, Claire walks up to her daughters' room. She leans against the doorway and watches her daughter sleep. Her hand rests on her stomach. She can feel the intense fear just settling in her chest. She's lost two, she knows she won't survive a third.
"Hey" She turns her head and sees Kol walking towards her. He leans on the wall just outside her room, facing Claire.
"Hi" She whispers. They look at each other. An understanding settling between them.
"Come here" He mutters. She doesn't hesitate to walk into his arms. He holds her tightly. He kisses her head. "You're not going to lose this baby" He promises her.
"It's not fair" She whispers. "Will our children always be threatened like this?" She whimpers. "Will they never truly be safe?" Kol sighs.
"I don't know" He mutters. He knew they had a lot of enemies. Claire isn't the only way to get at them anymore. Now, when they begin to have children, they'll have more weaknesses, more targets. "I don't know if they'll ever be truly safe but I do know that they will be protected their entire lives."
"That's as good as anyone can do" She mutters lifting her head to look at him. "I love you" He smiles and presses his forehead on hers.
"I love you more, Angel" He presses his lips on hers. Her body forms to his. She slowly pulls away.
"I have to make some calls... Something tells me that this is only the beginning, something tells me we're gonna need some backup on this one."
