*Chapter Forty One* {Alive and Kicking}

"Kol, stop antagonizing the kids!" Claire shouts from the park bench as her mate scares away every male child away from Madelyn. The mother of the crying three-year-old gives Claire an annoyed look as she tries to comfort her son. Claire just gives her a shrug and a sympathetic smile.

"You husband seems like a handful," Claire glances to her left to see a middle aged girl sitting next to her.

"Fiancé," She corrects while watching Kol push Madelyn on the swing with an adoring smile. Sitting in the stroller taking a nap beside her is Kaylin. Finn is also with them but left momentarily to grab Claire some food. "And you have no idea,"

"Is that your daughter with him?" She asks and Claire nods.

"That's Madelyn and this is little Kaylin," Claire says readjusting the cover to Kaylin's stroller.

"They're really beautiful children," The woman compliments. Claire smiles and thanks her. "Kaylin looks just like you," Claire smiles a little wider at her daughter. "But she has her father's eyes,"

"Yeah, she does" Claire whispers smiling at her daughter fondly. "I'm sorry, what did you say your name was?" Claire asks frowning her eyebrows as she turns back to the woman only to see the seat empty.

Claire stands from the bench and looks around the park. Her hand reaches out for the stroller. She pulls Kaylin close to her before looking towards Kol and Madelyn. Her eyes then notice the middle aged woman not far from her daughter and mate.

"Madelyn, Kol!" Claire shouted to get their attention. "It's time to go," She decided.

"But mom!" Madelyn complained. "We just got here!"

"Let's go, Madelyn," Claire said sternly. "You need to take care of your kitties and ponies" Instantly, Madelyn grins and skips towards her mother.

"Bye grandma!" Madelyn waved at the middle aged as she passes her. Claire frowns her eyebrows and shares a look with Kol. Claire kneels to the ground as Madelyn comes up to her.

"Did you know that woman, Madelyn?" Claire asks grabbing her daughters hands. Madelyn nods as if it were obvious.

"That's grandma" Madelyn shrugs. Claire glances up at Kol, who's standing behind their daughter. He holds her gaze for a moment before looking around for the witch.

"Where have you seen her before?" Claire asks looking back to her daughter.

"I had a dream about her," Madelyn says looking over at Kaylin. "She was blond in the dream though, and she looked different," Madelyn shrugs. Claire looks behind her daughter and sees Kol isn't in sight. "Are we going home now?"

"We're gonna leave in a minute," Claire says standing up. She runs her fingers through her hair as she tries to pinpoint where Kol had gone.

"Papa!" Madelyn darts from Claire's side. The mother goes to grab her but relaxes when she sees Finn walking over to them. Finn effortlessly picks Madelyn up in one arm and rest her on his hip.

"Where's Kol?" Finn asks handing Claire a sandwich. Claire sets it on the bench and looks towards the trees again. "What's wrong?" Finn asks holding Madelyn a little tighter.

"Maddie, can you show Papa Finn that dream you had?" Claire asks petting her hair lightly. Finn frowns his eyebrows but Claire nods to him. Madelyn, used to having her Papa's read her mind to see her dreams, presses her forehead against Finn's allowing him to see her dream. "Is it her?" Claire asks as Finn leans his head back. He glances at Claire and slowly nods. "Of course it is,"

"Where's Kol?" Finn asks. Claire sighs and looks back towards the trees only relaxing when she sees him walking back towards them.

"Whoever that witch is, she's strong," Kol tells them. "She got away," He stops beside Claire. "Why do I get the feeling that I'm missing something?"

"We should get home," Claire says grabbing Kaylin's stroller. "Maddie was right, your mother's back for a visit," Claire says pushing the stroller towards. Kol groans rolling his eyes.

"Can't the bitch just stay dead?" Kol sighs a moment before Claire smacks his chest. Madelyn giggles holding Finn like koala. "What?" He asks innocently.

"Watch your language," Claire scolds as they make it to the car. Kol smiles kissing the side of her head. They all get into the car and drive back to the plantation. "Where's Klaus, Elijah and Henrik?"

"Klaus and Elijah are at a meeting with Marcel, Henrik's at the house," Finn tells her. Claire sighs pulling out her phone to text Elijah and Klaus to get home.

"Well, at least we had a few months without having to worry about anything," Claire mutters.

"It'll be alright, Angel," Kol promises. "I think by now we're pretty good at... getting rid of our mother,"

"Obviously not, if she keeps coming back" Claire rolls her eyes. "If she came back... you don't think Mikael is with her, do you?" I ask hesitantly. Finn and Kol share a look which didn't help calm Claire's nerves.

"Did I do something wrong, mama?" Madelyn asks sitting to Claire's right.

"What? Of course, not, baby" She shakes her head kissing the top of her brunette hair. "What are you worried about?"

"Did I say something wrong, about grandma?" She asks looking up at Claire.

"No, baby, you did nothing wrong. It's a good thing that we know, you're so special" Claire smiles petting her hair lightly. Madelyn smiles widely and leans against her. "Alright, why don't you go make sure all your animals are fed?" Claire says.

"Ok!" Madelyn darts through the house and to the back. Claire motions for a couple of hybrids to keep an eye on her while she focuses on Kaylin.

"There are you, Angel" Henrik smiles kissing her forehead as she enters the house. "I heard you had an interesting time at the park,"

"Very interesting," Claire smiles carrying Kaylin into her room to change her into something a little more comfortable. "Where's Klaus and Elijah?" She asks knowing Henrik was following after her.

"They're on their way," He assures her. "So, mother dearest is back,"

"Yeah, and in someone else's body," Claire grumbles. Kaylin squirms and begins to cry as Claire pulls her out of the carrier. "Oh, I know baby, I know," She whispers trying to soothe her. She places her on the changing table. "Oh, stinky diaper," Claire gags a bit. "What the hell did you eat?" She whispers while cleaning her up.

"I'm hoping that was a rhetorical question," Klaus says from the doorway. Claire sends him a look daring him to say something about her breastmilk. He simply gives her an innocent smile keeping his lips shut. She finishes changing Kaylin's diaper and puts her in another comfy outfit. "Let me have her," Klaus says walking up to them.

As much as Claire wanted to hog Kaylin all to herself, she knew it wasn't going to happen. Claire knew it was only fair seeing as she had Kaylin for most of the day. She smiles watching Klaus pick up their daughter and hold her close to him.

"Elijah down stairs?" Claire wonders. Klaus nods kissing Kaylin's forehead tenderly. "Come on, we have a lot to talk about," She says leading him down stairs. They decide to discuss things on the back deck so they can keep a closer eye on Madelyn.

"How did she approach you?" Elijah asks Claire.

"She just came up and sat next to me," Claire shrugs. "It felt like a normal interaction until she made the comment about Kaylin having her father's eyes. She was gone before I could question her. Then Madelyn called her grandma and then I really knew something was wrong,"

"Madelyn had a dream, according her to her, it's our mother," Finn says.

"She didn't say anything about what she wanted?" Elijah asks and Claire shakes her head.

"Claire made the comment wondering if Esther isn't the only one to come back," Finn brings up.

"You think," Henrik shifts uncomfortably. "You think Mikael is back as well?"

"Mikael hunted you guys for a millennium and Esther has continuously tried to kill you, it would only make sense that if one comes back so would the other," Claire tells them. "Either way, we know Esther is back. She's most likely hiding on sacred ground, somewhere where you guys won't be able to find her. She'll be working with witches but she can't have that many backing her since they're mainly on our side,"

"Most of them are on our side in fear," Kol speaks up. "If they have the chance to get rid of us and be free, they'll take it,"

"We know Vanessa is the one who helped bring Esther back, I don't think all the rats went down with the ship when we killed her," Klaus grumbles slowly swaying side to side with Kaylin in his arms.

"So, we have no idea how many Esther has on her side," Claire concludes.

"Even if we don't know how many witches are following her, we still out number them," Elijah comforts lightly.

"Even if we out number them, we can't underestimate them," Claire advises. "Witches are strong, especially in numbers. These witches have something to fight for, they have anger and a strong leader. Yes, we have the numbers and we have the strength but we still need to be careful,"

"Whatever happens, we have to make sure she doesn't jump bodies," Klaus tells them.

"She's already in some witch, if we kill her or provoke her in a certain way," Elijah says eyeing his hybrid brother. "She'll switch bodies and we'll be back to square one,"

"I know we've had our fair share of bringing people back from the dead but we need to figure out how to make sure your parents stay dead," Claire stresses.

"Yes, our enemies returning from the dead is quite the problem," Elijah nods in agreement.

"Quite," Claire grins teasingly while leaning back in her seat. Elijah grins slightly at her.

"Mommy! Can we go on a trail ride?" Madelyn hollers from the barn. Claire smiles standing up. Once she sees her mom nodding, Madelyn leaps into the air and darts back into the barn to saddle up her pony whilst completely ignoring the scolding's she got for running.

"You have her?" Claire asks walking up to Klaus. The hybrid nods cuddling Kaylin into his chest. Claire smiles at the both of them. She kisses her daughters head lightly before kissing Klaus.

"Mind if I join you, Elsken?" Elijah asks as Claire pulls away from Klaus. Smiling, Claire holds her hand out to him. Elijah grabs it and the pair walk towards the barn.

"Have you heard from Rebekah?" Claire asks. Elijah smiles and nods. Claire lights up a bit as she waits to hear how her future sister-in-law is.

"Her and Asher are Hawaii at the moment enjoying the beaches," Elijah tells her.

"Of course," Claire smiles. "I'd like to visit Hawaii,"

"We'll take you some time," Elijah promises. "You have my word, we'll have eternity to explore the beauties of the world,"

"We're going to have to wait a while," Claire says slipping into one of the stables. "You men want children, it'll be a while until they are all grown and on their own,"

"I look forward to it," He says leaning towards her. She smiles grabbing his tie. Only Elijah would join them on a trail ride as if he had a to go to court right afterwards.

"I love you," She whispers to him.

"I love you, too" He whisper back before kissing her softly. Claire breathes through her nose slowly and leans into him. Her arms drape over his shoulders allowing her fingers to weave through his hair. Elijah presses her back against the barn wall as he deepens the kiss.

"Ew!" Madelyn cringes causing them both to smile and slowly pull away. "Mommy, Papa! We're supposed to go on a ride" Madelyn whines.

"We're going, we're going" Claire smiles at her before pecking Elijah's lips once more.
