*Chapter Forty Four*
"Hanna?" Liz asks cautiously after hanging up with Claire.
"Not exactly," Hanna smiles sending an unpleasant shiver down Liz's spine. "Esther Mikaelson, soon-to-be Claire's mother-in-law," Liz frowns her eyebrows. While she knew who Esther is, she didn't know how this situation happened. How is Hanna, Esther? What happened to Hanna? So many thoughts are racing through Liz's mind.
"What are you doing here?" Liz asks.
"Waiting," Esther says simply. "If you'll excuse me, I'd like to see my granddaughters," Esther goes towards the exit of the living room. However, Liz quickly blocks her path.
"I don't think so," Liz says knowing she couldn't stop Esther but maybe she could delay her.
"I have no intentions on harming either child," Esther assures. "I just want to see them,"
"You said you were waiting, for what?" Liz asks. Esther smiles shaking her head sensing Liz's diversion but giving in.
"Not a what, a who," Esther tells her. Liz can feel herself tensing but she doesn't move out of Esther's path. "Liz, you're a mother, like myself. Is there anything you wouldn't do for your girls? Don't you want what's best for them? That's what I'm trying to do. They've been without guidance for far too long. I'm trying to do what's best for them, even if they don't know it"
"Trying to kill your children is not what's best for them," Liz shakes her head. "Love, loyalty, that's what they need and that's what you lack" Liz tells her.
"You miss understand my actions," Esther tells her. "I do not wish to harm my children, nor you children, nor our grandchildren. I merely want to give them a better life," Liz raises her eyebrows.
"Our children have built themselves a damn good life, and that was without either of us. Yes, mother's want what's best for their children but they also need to know when to step back and allow them to live their own lives. You had your chance to inflict your will on them, that time has passed. Leave them alone, Esther. Let them live their lives the way they want too,"
"There was a time, not that long ago, where you despised vampires. A time where you would have killed you oldest daughter, just because she was one of them."
"That was a lifetime ago," Liz tells her defensively. "I've changed, I've accepted her for who she is. She's still my daughter and I would do anything for her, for both of them."
"You may have accepted her but have you really accepted the fact that she's a vampire?" Esther asks raising her eyebrow. "Or will you accept that Claire will eventually become one?" Liz purses having assumed Claire would be a vampire at some point. "What if I told you I could prevent Claire from becoming one of them? What if I told you I could give them all chances at new lives? Lives without the burden of vampirism?"
"Then I would tell you that that's their choice and their choice alone. I would tell you that even if they wished to become a vampire or stay one, then I wouldn't hold that choice against them. They're still my daughters and I'd love them no matter what," Liz says strongly.
"I remember when I so blindly loved my children, when I left them to make their own choices," Esther whispers. "If you knew the trouble and destruction that will follow Claire when she becomes a vampire, would you still so strongly believe in giving her the choice on vampirism?"
"Claire is a strong woman and she has a lot of people surrounding her, she'll be just fine," Liz says confidently. Esther simply hums. The look on her face giving Liz a bad feeling.
"Mom," Claire says entering the house with her mates. Liz instantly walks away from Esther and too Claire. "Are you alright?" She asks worriedly.
"I'm fine," Liz promises. "So are Madelyn and Kaylin," She reassures. Claire relaxes nodding before looking at Esther, who's taken over Hanna's body.
"Why Hanna?" Claire snapped walking around her mother. Kol instantly reaches out and prevents Claire from getting too close to her.
"I thought this would gain your attention," Esther smiles. Growling, Klaus lashes out and speeds towards her but Esther had expected it. Anger flares through Claire once more as Esther inflicts a spell on Klaus preventing him, and anyone else, from coming near her. Pulling from Kol, Claire goes to Klaus and helps him stand. Klaus holds onto his mate, his only anchor to sanity at the moment. "I did not come here to wage war!" Esther snapped.
"Everything you do is an act of war," Elijah snaps back.
"Why are you here, Esther?" Claire asks. "Why did you come back?"
"I have come to heal our family, Claire," Esther says.
"Well, that's a grand sentiment, coming from you," Klaus growls pulling Claire even closer to him.
"My intent was never to harm!" Esther exclaims. Claire frowns her eyebrows when she feels the earth rumble under her feet. "Only to heal, I will undo everything that has been done, thereby giving you all a new life! One without the vampire curse I inflicted upon you," The rumbling gets worse until Esther says a spell. A large light emits from her body, enough to blind everyone in the room. Klaus instinctively shields Claire as Esther turns into hundreds of starlings that fly through the windows and out into the sky
Once everything settles, they hear crying coming from the bedroom. Claire and Klaus are the first ones to check on the two girls. Madelyn looks extremely shaken while Kaylin wails from her crib. Claire sits on Madelyn's bed, the young girl instantly climbs into her mothers lap seeking her comfort.
Claire watches as Klaus gently picks Kaylin up from her crib and cradles her in his arms. He holds her snuggly while slowly rocking side to side. His eyes meet Claire's. There's so many emotions swirling in his eyes it's hard to identify them all but Claire knew that his protectiveness over their family has only been amplified since Esther's return.
"We need to get home," Claire says gently. Klaus slowly nods. He continues to hold Kaylin close while bending to pick up her back. "Come on, let's go home" Claire whispers to Madelyn. The little girl nods climbing out of bed. She picks up her backpack and quickly grabs Claire's hand.
"Are they alright?" Elijah asks. Claire nods reassuringly. Madelyn let's go of her mother and stands in front of Elijah, lifting her arms. Without saying another word, Elijah picks her up and rests her on his hip. Claire smiles watching Madelyn bury her head into his neck.
"Mom, why don't you stay with us for a little bit?" Claire suggests. Figuring it wasn't really a suggestion, Liz nods. Elijah and Klaus go to Liz's car and strap the girls inside while Liz quickly packs a bag. "What did she say to you?" Claire asks from the doorway. Liz glances over at her.
"She tried to get me to understand why she's doing what she's doing," Liz explains. "She says she has a way to give them a way to live their lives without being a vampire,"
"Another way?" Claire frowns her eyebrows. "A new life..." She whispers thinking about Esther's words. "She wants to put them in new bodies," Claire realizes looking at her mother. "Why does she have to keep coming back and messing with our lives?" Claire groans leaning against the doorway.
"She thinks she's doing the right thing," Liz explains. "She thinks that if they're cured of their vampirism then they can all be a family again"
"The only thing it'll do is piss them off," Claire sighs. "Once their enemies catch word that they're in human bodies, they'll come at them with a force that they won't be able to fight,"
"So, what are you going to do?" Liz asks. Claire looks at her.
"Talk to them," Claire answer simply. "Come on, we need to go" Liz nods grabbing her bag. Claire and Henrik ride in the car with Liz and the girls while the others speed back to the plantation.
"Mommy?" Madelyn asks as she snuggles under her covers in her room. Claire hums sitting beside her. "Is grandma gonna hurt Hanna?" Madelyn asks looking at her mother with doe eyes. Claire smiles not even phased by the fact that Madelyn had known about Esther and Hanna.
"I'm going to do everything I can to prevent that from happening," Claire promises. "Don't worry, alright? Everything's going to work out," Claire reassures her. Madelyn smiles nodding. Leaning down, Claire kisses her forehead. "Get some sleep" Madelyn yawns closing her eyes. "I love you,"
"I love you too," Madelyn whispers slowly slipping back into her dream world. Walking out of her daughter's room, Claire joins her mates on the back porch. She instantly notices Klaus pacing and a tension between the brothers. Claire sighs mentally cursing Esther for disrupting their peace.
"Claire," Elijah sighs turning towards her. "Did Liz tell you anything about her conversation with Esther?"
"A little bit," Claire nods. "I think Esther means to do to you what she's doing to herself," They continues to look at her not understanding. "She wants to cure you from vampirism, I think she's going to try and force you all to change bodies like she's doing,"
"So, how are we going to stop her?" Henrik asks.
"We need to let Rebekah know what's happening, we can't keep her in the dark," Claire says, nobody objects. "We also need to figure out how to get Esther out of Hanna's body,"
"We need to let Asher, Archie and Penny know what's going on with her," Henrik adds. Claire nods in agreement.
"I'm sure you guys can handle Rebekah," Claire says. "I'll talk to my siblings," She tells them. Claire looks at them for a moment before going inside to make some calls to her siblings. As suspected, once they heard what had happened, Rebekah and Asher along with Penelope and Kai decided to come to New Orleans to help stop Esther and get Hanna back. Claire left it to Penelope, Asher and Archie to decide with they wanted to tell Hanna's parents what have happened but after everything that's happened, Claire didn't think they could handle the news. Although, Claire also knew it wasn't her place to decide that and seeing as her siblings have known them longer, she left the decision to them.
Once the phone calls were made Claire thought about Esther's proposition. While she knew they couldn't trust Esther, she knew that her idea isn't out of their reach. They had witches on their side, she's a witch that could preform the spell if that's what they wanted.
"Knock, knock" Claire says gently from the entrance of the library, a place where Finn often goes. He instantly smiles at her. She walks into the room, her eyes gazing over the numerous amounts of books.
"Rebekah and Asher are on their way home," Finn tells her.
"So is Kai and Penny," Claire says looking back towards him. Once she's close enough, he gathers her into his arms.
"What's on your mind?" Finn asks.
"This thing with your mother, her wanting to give you guys a chance at a new life... is it something you want?" Claire asks resting her hands on his chest. Finn goes to answer but Claire continues. "Don't think about what I want or what your brothers and sister might want, what do you want?" She asks. "Do you want to be put in another body? A human body and have the chance to grow old?"
"Perhaps at one point in my long life," Finn nods. "But I don't think that's the life for me anymore," He tells her. "I'm enjoying my life, the way I am, with you" He says caressing her face. "I know you want to be a vampire, I don't want something like old age to come between us. I don't want to die while you live. As long as I have you by my side for all of eternity, maybe a child or two," He grins causing her to smile as well. "Then I will be more than happy, as a vampire" Claire slowly nods pulling him into a gentle kiss. "I love you," He whispers to her. "I want an eternal life with you,"
"And you'll get it," She promises. "Along with a child or two," She smiles imaging their children running around the house. Wanting to have this conversation with the others, Claire gives him another kiss before leaving him in the library.
She wanted to talk to them individually so that they wouldn't feel pressured to lie while in the presence of the other brothers. After leaving Finn, Claire goes towards her room with Henrik. She sees him sitting on the bed looking lost in thought.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Claire asks startling him. He looks up at her and smiles. Walking into the room, she sits beside him.
"It's nothing," He shakes his head. She gives him a look while reaching for his hand.
"You're thinking about what we talked about earlier, a chance at having a life as a human," He glances at her guiltily.
"I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't-" Henrik instantly starts to say but Claire shushes him lightly.
"You have nothing to be sorry about," Claire whispers to him. "Being a vampire isn't for everything," She tells him.
"I'm not upset about being a vampire, I would be dead if Elijah hadn't changed me," Claire flinches lightly and hugs him. He pulls her onto his lap. She relaxes in his grip as she breathes in his scent. "I just feel like I'm not as much use as a vampire,"
"You're not useless," Claire says looking into his eyes. "You never have been and you never will be. I'm sorry you feel like that," She whispers running her hand though his hair. "You miss the magic, don't you?" Henrik nods.
"The blood lust, not having magic, the heightened emotions, it's not what I thought it would be," Henrik admits.
"You've been doing an excellent job," Claire tells him. "I hope you know that I am proud of you," he smiles lightly. She pulls him towards her, gently kissing his lips. "I love you and I will still love you if you are in a different body." She reassures him. "If that's something you want, please do not let your mother do it, I don't trust her. My coven can preform the spell, that way I know you're safe and it will go right,"
"I'll think about it," He says truthfully.
"Don't let any of your brothers try and persuade you either way," She tells him. "I want you to do what you want, what will make you happy, not them"
"I love you," He mutters. She smiles whispering the words back to him before kissing his lips. "I assume you're going to leave me now?" He pouts playfully.
"You're not the only one that I need to talk to about this," She whispers with a smile. "Get some sleep, I love you" She kisses him again before going to talk with Kol.
"No," Kol says the instant she finds him. "No, I want no part of mother's plan"
"We don't need Esther to preform the spell," Claire tells him. "Do you not want to the chance to have magic?" She asks him.
"I love magic, you know I do," Kol says speeding towards her. She stands there as he takes her face in his hands gently. "But I want to stay in this body, I'm stronger in this body. I do admit, being in a witches body is tempting but the only witch I want to be in is you," He growls seductively. Claire laughs draping her arms around his neck. "I promise you Elijah and Klaus want nothing to do with mother's plan, stay with me" Kol pleads bending down to kiss her neck.
"Hmm, tempting," She whispers leaning into him. Kol smirks against her skin. "Hold that thought, for just a little longer" She says slipping from his grip. He groans pouting as she walks away. "I'll be back," She winks before find Elijah and Klaus together in the study.
"Our mother, Elijah - the woman who brought us into the world, made us what we are - and the whole time, she lied to me" Klaus growls unable to come to terms with what he had learned. "She made me weak,"
"You were never weak, Niklaus," Elijah tells him. "You are - you have always been - the most fierce of us all. In a thousand years, I have never seen anyone successfully stand against you. Not even our wicked father. not one of the countless devoted to your destruction. You'll protect our home, even in the face of an adversary such as out mother, because that, brother... that is what you do."
Claire hated how surprised Klaus seemed to be by Elijah words. Her hatred for Esther grew in her heart. Klaus reaches out and grips his brothers shoulder.
"You remain ever the wise counsel, brother." Klaus smiles at him. "The rest of the family could learn something from you," Elijah smiles at his kind words. Elijah turns and leaves the room, pausing by Claire who hides just outside not wanting to ruin their moment. A silent understanding passes between them, Claire knew Elijah wanted nothing to do with Esther's idea. He would remain a vampire, even with the choice of turning human. Kissing her forehead he leaves her to talk with his hybrid brother.
"So, I'm just going to assume you don't want to change bodies?" Claire asks. Klaus smiles shaking his head. "I didn't think so," She says walking up to him.
"I won't let her hurt our family," Klaus tells her strongly.
"I know you won't," Claire shakes her head. "We're going to stop her," She says confidently. "And hopefully when we're done with her, she won't come back"
I know I don't put many gif's of her, so if you don't remember from the cast section in Inevitable, the gif at the top is Angie Harmon and she plays Hanna.
