Chapter 57 | The Vault

Finch had disappeared for a few days. He'd kept himself locked away in his office and bedroom, trying his best to keep his sadness to himself. Nearly everyone was very used to his warming heart. This wasn't a state they should be seeing him in. However, he still had a job to do. He forced himself to push past his brother's death and return to work.

Firstly, it was time that the evil book in his possession was finally returned to the vault. To his knowledge, anyone that knew what the pages really contained was either dead, or on his side. He had no reason to worry. Regardless, he wanted a strong power to lock it away. There was only one witch with the ability to put the lock on it that it really deserved.

"Fine," The drama queen huffed, crossing her arms, "But I want two things in return. First, now that Colton is dead, I want you to be my new doctor. I heard you're a pushover, which I'd much rather prefer over that stubborn old Irish crow. Second, I want a few minutes to read over my grimoire."

"The first, I can understand, but I do not have the authority to grant your second request. I'm sorry. Why would you want it, anyways?" Finch asked.

"Over the years, I've forgotten a lot of my good spells. I need to re-learn one or two if I'm going to do the kind of damage the master wants me to on my trip to earth." Dusk replied.

Jasper leaned over the staircase above them, smiling like a snake. "In that case, I suppose there's no harm in it. Only a minute, though. Understood?"

"Yes, Master Knight. Thank you." She responded respectfully. The word impressive doesn't even begin to describe the way he could control even such an evil spirit like Dusk.

"Finch, while you're down there, why don't you take Ryan to view it finally? After all, he is an official member of the society now. He deserves to know our secrets." Jasper suggested. He backed up from the rail, disappearing as quickly as he appeared. It wouldn't be a normal day around this manor if he wasn't popping up in random places.

Finch beamed his unforgettable smile as Ryan walked in the foyer, "Were your ears burning? We were just talking about you."

"Hm, really?" He scoffed, "What about me?"

"Jasper would like me to show you the vault. Follow me." Finch started to walk in the direction of Rest Point. Beyond that gate was the only way to the underground levels. He spoke over his shoulder, "Anyone who's a member of the society has access. It's a collection of extremely powerful artifacts from the supernatural world. Everything from the nail that went through Jesus' hand to a horn broken from Satan's head. I'm speaking metaphorically, of course. Jesus is only a mirage, and Satan," He chuckled, "He's in a very dark place."

"You're saying The Devil is real?" He asked.

"Very much so. However, he hasn't ruled the underworld in centuries. He isn't powerful enough to."

"Aside from that, there's no underworld left. It's frozen over." He grumbled.

Finch stopped in front of one of the many locked doors in Rest Point. Being near it caused a symbol to appear on the palm of his hand. He waved it over the lock, causing it to pop open. "Even the demon who was the cause of our home's end is now dead. I honestly never thought he could be overpowered, but for once, I was happy to be wrong."

"I don't like the thought of someone that powerful being out there and not knowing who it is." Ryan said.

Finch smiled, glancing back at him as they walked down the stairs. "You may think you don't know, but you know him much better than you think. Isn't it funny how we can know someone so well, yet not know them at all?"

Ryan figured a vampire as old as Finch, his mind must finally be turning against him. He sounded like a loon. At first, at least. They had a long walk down to the vault, which gave Ryan to think. They didn't call Lumi the Cold Lord for nothing. He was known to be more powerful than all the ice wizards combined. If there was any demon capable of freezing over Hell, it would've  been him. If that was true, that meant Croc was much more powerful than he ever led on.

Finch had to open a second locked door before they finally reached the vault. The room held so much magic, both like and dark, that it could make the weak at heart faint. Most the energy was actually coming from the spells locking away all of these relics. It felt like it went on for miles in here. Dusk and Ryan were both in awe, for different reasons. She couldn't believe that this much magic power was under the manor and she never sensed it. Whereas, all Ryan could think was how dangerous it was to have all of this in one place.

"I'm not sure how Colton broke the spell lock on the fake of this book, but we have to make sure no one could ever access this." Finch glared over at the witch, "Understood?"

She sighed with crossed arms, "Yeah, don't worry about it. This is me you're talking to. I'm a Hell of a lot more powerful that that bimbo you guys keep around."

"Please refrain from speaking about members of the council with such disrespect." He handed her over the journal carefully. "Though it is true that you could easily best miss Costello, she is trustworthy. You, not so much."

"I don't know what you're talking about. I'm a perfect angel. I've never done anything wrong." She insisted.

Finch silently gave Ryan a look, making him stifle a laugh. He figured after a few years, Dusk's games would get old. For now, they're just entertaining to him. That girl must've had fifty different personas. Each was more interesting than the last. She set the journal down on a pedestal, then proceeded to cast a barrier over it. Finch must've trusted her somewhat to let her even touch something like that.

On one of the back walls, there was a line of headless mannequins displaying very formal outfits. Ryan took note of it, asking, "What are those? More like, who's are they?"

Finch turned around to see what he was referring to. "Oh. They're uniforms and other formal clothing of late members of the society. Usually we have a few per person. I'm sure soon, some of Maria and Sebastian's things will be added to the collection. If I'm not mistaken, a few on the end are Chris'. You'd know better than me."

Ryan walked over to get a closer look. "Yeah. This was his formal uniform from service. The war feels like it was so long ago. Sometimes I forget how much of a decorated soldier he was. He was really humble about it."

"Yes, I'd noticed. He was a five star general, correct?"

"Four, actually. He should've been granted five, but that would've given him enough power to overthrow Carmella's orders if he felt they were misguided. She couldn't have that. It would've ruined her plans." He bitterly explained, "We all deserved more than we were given. Myself and Ricky were both lieutenant generals. In the chain of command, we were directly under Chris. Everyone else in the family held a major title, putting them directly under Ricky and I. All we did for them, and they repaid us with pain, disrespect, and humiliation."

"There is no such thing as good without a little bad. Thankfully, the converse of that statement is true. In even the worst of situations, we can find a little good. You all were lucky enough to be graced with Angelo's presence in your life as a result of the war."

"Funny, Ange used to say something similar. About good and bad always coexisting, I mean. You remind me of him a lot." Ryan replied.

Finch was caught off guard. He'd always believed the ones we loved reflected in our own eyes. For Angelo to have possessed any of his qualities, it gave him an odd sense of warmth. "I surely hope that isn't a bad thing. I understand you miss him greatly, and I wouldn't want to cause you any pain."

"No, don't worry. It's a good thing. I think everyone needs someone like Angelo in their life. He could always find a small bit of light in even the darkest places. As soon as he came into our lives, it was like the Chris I knew disappeared. He was finally able to be happy and that's all I could ever hope for." Ryan caught the witch looking at him and smirked, "What are you staring at, shrimp?"

"Who're you calling a shrimp? I might be small but I could kill you with one breath if I wanted to." She seethed.

He walked over to her, messing up her hair with his hand. "Relax. I'm just messing with you."

"You are playing with fire, my friend. Literally, she can actually manifest into a fire." Finch said.

He pulled away his hand so quickly, you'd think he almost had it in a bear trap. "Seriously?!"

"Yeah," Dusk spoke as she started to walk through the maze of artifacts, "But I haven't been able to cast that spell in a long time. Your average witch, wizard, or warlock has a select amount of power inside of them. Once they're out of magic energy, they have to wait for it to naturally regenerate. What makes me so powerful is I don't, not necessarily. I can feed off of misery to replenish my strength or make my power grow. The spell I use to turn into fire takes a Hell of a lot of magic to cast and I have to continually collect more energy to keep it going."

"So, that's why I've heard so many stories about you burning down major cities." Ryan replied.

She smiled proudly, "I'm responsible for some of the most tragic fires in human history. Not to mention a lot of natural disasters and disease outbreaks, but shhh, don't tell anyone. It's a secret."

"If you say so. Shae seems to really have your number."

"Shae has everyone's number. He knows all your dirty secrets. After all, he was born with the amazing gift of telepathy. To my knowledge, he's one of the only beings left to possess the power." Finch explained.

Ryan's eyes must've doubled in size. "No one felt the need to tell me this before?! Has that fucking creep been in my head?!"

"Most likely. You never found is suspicious that he knows so much? It's not exactly telepathy as much as it is that he has hearing so heightened that he can hear thoughts. So, he can't exactly dig into your past as long as you're not thinking about it consciously."

Ryan sighed, "So, let me get this straight. From the time I've been here I've found out that Jasper is secretly a demon, Micah secretly is one of the few blessed vampires like Ghost, Beau is a crow, and Shae can hear people's thoughts. Anything else about the staff you'd care to share?"

"None that I can think off off the top of my head, but I'll be sure to tell you if I do. The society holds so many secrets, it's unreal. Even after all these years, I still find out new ones every day." Finch walked over to where the witch was patiently waiting. He waved his hand over the glass case containing her spell book to open it. "Please, don't make me regret this decision."

"I won't. I promise I'll be a good girl." She pecked him on the cheek, "Thank youuu."

Finch wiped away her red lipstick with distaste, "Please, never do that again. Unlike the others, I'd never get involved with a patient."

"Take it from me, it's in your best interest not to." Ryan muttered.

"Oh, lighten up. You're both gay anyways so why's it matter?" Dusk picked up her most prized possession with an ear to ear smile, "Hello, Baby. Mommy's missed you, so so much."

"I'm not gay!" Ryan snapped at her.

She sighed dramatically as she sat down on the floor. "Believe what you will. Now, let's see. This would be easier if Jasper was a little more clear on what he wanted me to do. Buuuut," Her smile turned more sinister as she reached a certain page, "I have a few old standbys that always work for every situation..."

"I can't believe you slept with her." Finch mumbled.

"I guess I'll never learn one of the most important rules in the man handbook." He replied.

"Which is?"

Ryan paused a moment to watch Dusk as her own spells were bringing out her true colors. "Don't stick your dick in crazy."
