Chapter 5 | Echoes

After meeting Alexander, the poor boy who could never hear and see right, Ryan was starting to understand how hard it must be to work here. Asylums are often thought of as places for criminals or people that are out of their minds. That's not true, not at all. Most these patients are real people with personalities that are being tortured by their own brains. He could see now why it hurt Felix so much to love one of them.

"Marci is next. I don't know what Felix has told you about her, but since he's last seen her, she's gotten a Hell of a lot worse. She doesn't talk, but she's not going to be scared of you like some of the others may be. She'll just... stare. Try to not let it get to you though."

"Felix gave me this to give to her." He pulled a necklace out of his pocket, "Is that okay?"

"Yeah, it'll make her really happy. Her favorite kind of dog is a corgi, so Felix got her this stuffed animal that looks like one. She clings to that thing like her life depended on it. Anything that she has that was his, she protects with her life." He explained.

There weren't many sets of meds left on the tray he carried. He slowly opened the door, as not to startle the girl. Micah set the tray down on the black chest at the end of her bed. Her room was decorated like a black and white circus. Felix has mentioned she used to work for the circus, back when she was alive. It was a very obvious part of who she was, Ryan noted.

In the corner of the room, a small girl sat in a rocking chair with her knees to her chest. She was beyond gorgeous. No wonder Felix had fallen head over heels for her. It was unfair that someone so beautiful had been turned into a shell of her former self. Her black and green hair was up in messy pigtails with feathers mixed into the wavy locks. She covered up a lot with her layers of silks and feathered garments of clothing.

Marci barely moved her eyes to acknowledge Ryan's existence. She didn't seem to care much. As tired as she looked, he didn't blame her. An IV was in her arm, hooked up to a role beside her chair. She'd been the first patient he'd seen with any kind of medical care like that. It shouldn't come as a surprise, considering everyone had told him how unwell she was. He noticed the corgi stuffed animal Micah had mentioned was held tightly in her lap.

"Go ahead and give that to her. Once I give her her meds, she'll be out until dinner." He said.

Ryan cautiously stepped closer to the girl. She wasn't afraid of him one ounce, though she didn't know him at all. "I know you don't know who I am, but I'm a friend of Felix's. Since he can't come here anymore, I came for him. He gave me this to give to you."

He held out the silver chain with a cross on the end of it. The second she saw it, she knew it was his. Her eyes managed to show a little spark of emotion for the first time in awhile. Marci reached out, gently taking the necklace from him. She forced a very, very subtle smile as a way of thanking him.

"He misses you more than anything. I hope you know that." He reassured her.

Marci hugged her little corgi closer with the chain now wrapped around her hand. During this interaction, Micah had prepared the medicine that would be injected into her IV line. Ryan stepped back to let him administer it. Only a second after it hit her bloodstream, she started to drift off. Her aid gently picked her up, pulling the IV pole along, and carried her to her bed.

Micah sighed to himself, "Poor thing. She'll be okay by dinner time."

"What do you have to give her that it does that to her?" Ryan asked.

He picked up his tray, walking for the door, "Aside from her mental health problems, she also has a few psychical problems. One of which being a dark world disease called Adinoime. It's rare, but I'm glad for that, because it's awful. It makes it so her body doesn't produce much energy. As you can imagine, having your entire body running on fumes does a number on the organs. The treatment I gave her will help her body to restore a little bit of energy while she's sleeping, so when she wakes up she can process food properly and be able to be awake enough to be around others for awhile."

"That's awful." He replied, "There's no cure for it?"

"Not that we've found. For some reason it gets a lot better when Felix is around her. At first, her doctor just thought it was a mental thing, since she was happier. Then, after he was gone, he started to think there might've been something more to it. Only time will tell, I guess.

Now, this next patient's name is Joan. She was a human who unwillingly got the powers of a witch bestowed onto her. Her body can't handle the power and she can't control it, so that's why she's here." Micah pushed open the door he'd stopped at, grinning, "Speak of the Devil. Ryan, this is one of our doctors, Beaureguard Angel."

The vampire stood up from the chair he'd been sat in, "You can call me Beau. New aid, I take it?"

"Aid in training." He replied, "I'll be out of here in a second. Just have to give Miss Armstrong her medication."

A fair skinned woman was sat on the end of the bed. She had noticeable silver symbols on her flesh that Ryan guessed weren't her choice to have. Some witches have more, others have less. He'd never seen them that color though. She wore a light brown sweater and black leggings. Unlike the others, she looked like she could be any woman on the street in America.

"Thank you." She told Micah as she took two pills from him.

"Thank you for being my easiest patient." He replied, turning back to Ryan, "Are you ready to meet the hardest?"

"No, but I will anyways."

"Or, should I say meet again?" Micah pondered as he walked into the hall, "Considering it's another one of Ricky and Ghost's children."

Ryan sighed, "Ripper or Knox?"

"Knox. Ripper isn't one of my patience, let alone in either of the wards I work in. The majority of criminally insane patients are kept in Rest Point, but apparently the doctors think Knox is okay enough to be in the general pop. He never can sleep, so at night you might see him wandering the halls."

"If I do, should I put him back in his room?"

Micah shrugged, "Your choice. His doctor said it's fine to just leave him. I... Don't know what state he was in when you last saw him, but it might shock you to see him now."

"I've ran out of room to be shocked." He honestly said.

What's the worst it could be? The fact that he was alive was enough of a surprise as is. Micah walked into the room, of which was just as dark as Marci's. It was somehow even more depressing. Only one beam of sunlight traveled along the ceiling and floor. Considering it was close to sundown, it was that more golden last sun of the day.

Standing at the window, peering out through the black curtains, was a skeleton of a main. Knox was so thin, Ryan didn't know how he was standing. He was skin and bones. Slowly, he turned around to look at the two men who had entered his room. He wasn't nearly as excited about seeing his uncle as his younger brothers had been.

"I'd hope you'd be a little happier than that to see one of your family members." Micah commented as he set his things down on the dresser.

"I haven't seen him in over three hundred years." He mumbled, "Why should I care?"

"Family is family. And if your mother saw you this way, he'd probably have a heart attack."

"He wouldn't care." He grumbled.

Micah took a deep breath to keep himself calm, "Obviously you want to be left alone. So, just take your medication and we'll go."

Knox turned back towards the window, muttering, "Go fuck yourself."

"Let's not do this today, Knox." He sighed, "Come on." There was utter silence in respond. Defeated, Micah groaned, "Great, we'll have to do this the hard way."

"Hard way?" Ryan asked.

He pursed his lips, "Yeah."

Micah was a big guy. There was no denying that. He was well over six foot, which he probably needed that brute strength in this line of work. When he took off his leather trench coat, he revealed how built his arms were underneath. It's not like he really needed much to overpower Knox though. One of the many problems with being anorexic is having a lack of strength.

He forced Knox to turn around and pushed him into the wall. Micah held his jaw tightly but he refused to open his mouth. He turned his head side to side, trying to shake off the aid's grasp. Eventually it began to hurt his thin bones and he barely opened his mouth to get some relief on his jaw. Micah managed to slip his medication between his teeth in that time, holding his mouth shut.

"Swallow." He growled.

Knox glared at him, hoping he'd give up. Years of doing this, he knew that wasn't going to happen. Yet, he still fought his aid nearly every day. Once he finally swallowed, Micah let go.

"Happy?" He sneered.

"Open up." He replied, to which Knox grumpily complied. Because he knew Micah would ask him to anyways, he lifted his tongue to show his meds weren't hidden anywhere in his mouth. "Thank you."

"Fuck you." He grumbled, walking away from him to go sit on his bed.

Micah sighed and grabbed the tray, tucking it under his arm now that it was empty. "You think you can find your way to Jasper's office on your own?" He asked Ryan.

"Yeah, I'm getting down the hang of things here." He replied.

"Alright. Just stay out of Rest Point for today. I'll make sure Angela gets a room ready for you soon."

"Thank you." He responded as the two walked into the hall.

Micah split off in a different direction, going to do whatever it may be that he needed to. Ryan was good with direction, remembering the layout of the building so far. At the time, they'd been downstairs, but he remembered the office being up. He found his way to the stairs, getting ready to head up them. A noise from the hall he had yet to visit distracted him.

It sounded like a growl. One that only Croc to manage to make. Ryan glanced up at the sign at the front of the hall, seeing it labeled the ward he was currently forbidden from. He wasn't about to push any boundaries, so he continued to walk upstairs. The sounds he heard disturbed him. Croc did not sound happy at all. He was fucking pissed, most likely because they'd taken him away from his baby.

Ryan found the oak door belonging to the warden. He knocked getting a call to enter from the other side. The place felt as intimidating as before. Jasper sat at his desk, writing away in a patient file. He was quick to close it once Ryan had entered the room.

"I hope Micah didn't scare you too much." He teased.

He snickered dryly, "No, not yet. He's a nice guy. I'll enjoy getting to work with him."

"Good, I'm glad. Shae is nice too, but he has to be a little... tougher with his patients. Anyways, here's the contract. I'll leave you to read it over. I figure you'd also like some alone time to call home." Jasper spoke as he got up.

"Yeah, that would be great." He replied.

The warden set a gem on the desk. It looked simple but it was a rather amazing little thing. In a sense, it was the supernatural version of Skype. Ghost and Ricky had one in their gallery back home. Hopefully they were still at work to catch it. Otherwise, Kitty had one she kept to keep in touch with her fae family.

He took some time to read over every line of the contract before daring to sign it. Six weeks working with mental patients may just turn him into one. Felix had done it for a good amount of time, and from the sounds of it Shae and Micah had been here a long time. Maybe it's not as bad as it seems. His biggest fear was getting stuck having the same day on repeat. Being in daily habits might be great for the others but Ryan wasn't looking forward to it.
