Chapter Four

Soooo... sorry this took so long...I had no idea what to write here, but I hope you enjoy!

(Moonwatcher POV, and we are back at the first day in the morning)

I nervously readjusted my backpack on my shoulder, keeping my head slightly bent downwards so that my long, partially wavy black hair with the soft green highlights that I had convinced my mom, Secretkeeper, to let me get over the summer, fell down around my face further shielding me from the crowd. Wow, there's a lot of people here, I thought, before having to resist the urge to smack myself. I had known that there would be a large crowd months ago! Of course there would be, Pyrrhia High was the biggest, and according to most, the best, high school in the town of Pyrrhia. The only nearby place that rivaled it was the neighboring town's high school, Pantala High.

Before I went into the auditorium for announcements and all, A teacher pulled me aside and ushered me over to a different door, saying that it was customary to announce new students who had moved to town and started going here and blah blah blah. Normally I would've listened to what she was saying, but I was shaking so much with nerves that I couldn't concentrate. It was all I could do to not drop my bag and the books that didn't fit in it everywhere. I pressed my back against the wall near the door, closing my eyes and inhaling and exhaling slowly.

All to soon I heard Principal Thorn begin introducing me. "And this year, Pyrrhia High has two new students who moved here recently! Let's give a proper welcome to Moonwatcher Galaxy and Abyss Deep!" Wait, who's Abyss Deep? I thought. I pushed myself off the wall, opening my eyes and realized that there was another kid back here. He looked fourteen, like me, and had dark blue hair and odd lemon-yellow eyes. He gave me a charming grin before opening the door and walking out. I pulled my hair around me, hiding behind the soft waves as I followed more slowly. My green eyes widened as I took in the crowd around me. And they're all looking at me- I cut off the train of thought, because it was highly more likely that they were looking at Abyss. Still, I couldn't help shrinking away from everyone, and once we were next to Principal Thorn, the tall, wiry blond smiled at us and shook each of our hands, welcoming each of us.

As soon as it was over, I hurried out and dashed to my first class, math with Mr. Morrowseer. My dad, who had divorced my mom when I was ten. He wasn't exactly the best person. He had pale skin, like mine, and close-cropped black hair. My mom had long and straight black hair, and green eyes like me. Morrowseer had darker eyes, and I was glad I looked more like Secretkeeper than him. I had Morrowseer's hair, though, because he had a slightly faded-looking black like mine, and if he ever let it grow out (which was pretty much never), it was wavy, too.

I slowed my pace near the door, knowing that Morrowseer had no fondness towards me and him being my father would get me no extra attention. Actually, his anger would be directed at me most likely, so, yes, actually, I probably would, just not in the way most people would expect. I walked in to find a few kids already there, including two boys, one with sandy-blond hair, black eyes, tanned skin, and freckles. The other had ice-blue hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. They looked like they were arguing. Well, the blue one was. The blond looked like he was joking around with the blue one, which only seemed to infuriate him more. I stepped past them, and quietly slid into a seat beside a small pink-and-yellow haired girl with pigtails.

"Oh, hi!" the girl said. "I'm Kinkajou! You're the new girl, right? Moonwatcher?" she asked, and I got the impression that Kinkajou was one of those enthusiastic, friends-with-everyone girls that some people found annoying.

"Um, just Moon," I whispered, taking out my math books, plus a plain black pen and some lined paper just in case if I needed it. A pencil and eraser, too.

"All right, Just Moon!" Kinkajou giggled. "I'm kidding. Moon's a cool name."

"Thanks," I murmured, and Kinkajou opened her mouth to say something else, then quickly shut it again when Morrowseer walked in. I shrank back in my seat, and he turned towards me, and his frown deepened to an almost imperceptible degree. My eyes flicked around nervously, and I finally managed to focus on Morrowseer as he took attendance, then exhaled when he started talking.

"I've heard this teacher is like, really mean. He looks like it. What do you think?" Kinkajou whispered loudly in my ear.

"I-um-" I said, then broke up abruptly as Morrowseer heard me, and probably Kinkajou too, and glared right at us. He stalked up to the desks and asked, "Is there a conversation going on in my class, while I'm teaching?" he hissed.

Before Kinkajou could say, I dipped my head meekly, staring at the ground, feeling like my ten-year-old self all over again. "I'm sorry, sir," I whispered. "It won't happen again."

"What was that?" Morrowseer snarled nastily, and I knew quite well that he had heard me the first time, but disobeying him was not a good idea. I lifted my head, and staring straight into his eyes I said, louder this time, "I said it won't happen again," I repeated.

"And you?" he said, swiveling his gaze to land on Kinkajou.

"I'm s-sorry." she whispered, clearly not very used to being yelled at.

Morrowseer glared at her. Before he could say anything else to her, I broke in, surprising myself by saying, "I started the conversation! She was only responding to what I had said, it's not her fault." Kinkajou glanced at me a faint look of surprise on her face as Morrowseer turned towards me instead. He probably didn't believe my lie, but it was all I had. I wasn't going to let Morrowseer do anything to Kinkajou, when she wasn't trying to do anything wrong.

"Well, now. I always knew you were a disappointment," he said and before I registered what was happening, his hand flew up and slapped me, hard, on the cheek. I cried out in pain as sudden tears sprang into my eyes, but I blinked them away. I heard the other students gasp in shock, because teachers definitely weren't supposed to hit students. I pressed my hand to my cheek, trying to stop the stinging. I took a deep breath before glaring straight at him. "Well, Father, I guess I now know why Mother left you," I said, taking my hand away. I would definitely have a bruise there, and that would cause gossip, but I didn't care. It was time to stop being that pitiful, terrified little girl who was scared of her own shadow. Now, I needed to stand up for myself.

Morrowseer glared at me, venom in his eyes, before striding quickly out of the room, leaving the rest of the class gaping in shock. The first person to move was the blond from earlier, who elbowed his friend and whispered something in his ear, then the ice-blue haired boy whose name I thought was Winter, reached down and grabbed something from his bag, handing it to the blond. Then the blond guy stood up and walked over to me. I noticed he had a small scar zigzagging across his nose, and then he pressed something into my hand. I looked down, seeing an icepack. That was thoughtful, I thought, whispering my thanks as I gently pressed it against the red mark on my face.

I regretted what I had said about Morrowseer's and Secretkeeper's divorce, but I knew that I couldn't take it back. I definitely didn't regret protecting Kinkajou, though, so that was a bonus. I realized that the blond boy was saying something and quickly refocused on his words. "So, you're Moonwatcher, right?" he asked.

"Just Moon," I said, like I had before when Kinkajou had asked me the same thing.

He grinned, and said, "I'm Qibli. Weird name, I know, but blame my mom for that one. I didn't choose it."

I gave him a half-smile, responding with something I hoped wasn't awkward. "I think it's a nice name." Phew, I thought when he laughed, saying, "Go tell that to Igloo-face over there. He's always making fun of it." he gestured towards Winter.

"But we're really best friends, aren't we Winter?" he asked, flashing a charming grin at Winter. I got the impression that Qibli was some sort of expert at annoying, and Winter got the brunt of it. They seemed to get along well enough, anyways.

"In your dreams," Winter said not looking up from whatever he was doing.

"You know, I haven't had a dream about that yet. Last night you did turn into a zombie and start doing this weird groaning thing, and then I woke up and realized it was just the dog growling." Qibli commented.

I broke into the conversation after checking the time. "It'll be time for our next classes soon," I commented. "We should probably all pack up so that we can go when we have to."

"Smart," Qibli said, flashing one last grin at me before grabbing his book, and then when it was time to head for our next class, I could've sworn I heard the name "Moon," pass between Qibli and Winter in a whispered conversation, but I shook it off my mind and got to English, getting a seat at the front and refusing to think about anything but the class. Maybe this year won't be so bad, I thought.

After a while, I give you Chapter Four! Over 1,600 words this time! I didn't really know where to end it/what to write, but I hope you enjoyed nevertheless. I'll try and start Chapter Five soon.
