Chapter 7: Rooftops

"We can crawl to a rooftop and inhale the lights below and stars above as we laugh and forget the world we left on the ground."

-Victoria Erickson

You rested your chin in your hands as your blue eyes stared at the city outstretched beneath you. People were walking through the streets shopping and talking with one another in a happy way. Children ran around laughing and playing with each other, none of them having a care in the world.

You envied them.

They didn't have to worry about tomorrow, they knew that they would wake up and their parents would be right there, greeting them with large smiles and probably warm breakfast. They didn't need to ask questions about their future, because they knew that no matter what they would never be alone.

You didn't get that luxury.

You woke up each day not knowing if you were going to be in the same place that you fell asleep in. You were all alone. You couldn't tell anyone about your life in the other worlds, you couldn't tell them about your family, or the friends you had lost.

You were stuck in a void of knowledge. You knew so much, yet so little at the same time.

You sighed sadly, your eyes continuing to watch the people bustle with life below you.

You had somehow managed to climb to the very top of the large palace. After Taehyung had stopped crying on you, you didn't give him a chance to speak. You just ran away from him as quickly as possible. You didn't know where you were going, you just knew that you couldn't be near him anymore.

You didn't trust him.

You knew that he wasn't as strong as he pretended to be, and the fact that no one had shown him a true act of kindness made you pity him greatly. But he was still the same cruel, perverted man you had met the day before, no amount of crying was going to change that.

You felt bad for him though.

In a way, he was just like you.

He had everything and nothing at the same time. He had the world at his finger tips, but he wasn't capable of true friendship or love. He was lonely. And his loneliness ate away at his kindness until he became cold and distant to everyone around him.

He was a lonely monster.

"You should really stop running off."

You didn't even have to move your body to recognize the voice behind you, your eyes staying locked on the village as the brown-eyed man sat beside you on the ledge, his legs dangling off the side.

"How did you find me?" You asked quietly.

Jungkook shrugged.

"I wasn't exactly looking for you. This is my spot."

You turned to look at him.

"Do you want me to leave?" You asked.

He shook his head, moving his gaze out over the village, as the afternoon sun shine down on the two of you.

"You do not have to leave. I know the pressures of the palace better than anyone."

You nodded, looking back at the city.

"Is Jimin angry with me?" You asked quietly.

The slave, lowered his eyes.

"No. He just doesn't want you to be upset."

"He really believes in you." Jungkook stated quietly. "He has put more faith in you than anyone else. You are something special."

You moved your eyes to stare at your hands in your lap.

"That's not true."

He nodded, staring at his bare feet as a gentle wind blew his chestnut locks from his face.

"It is. He believes that you are the answer to our prayers, that you can fix the sky and bring life and happiness back into our nation."

"And what about you?" You asked. "What do you believe."

The chocolate-eyed boy turned his gaze to you, watching as you fiddled with your thumbs nervously.

"I don't know." He breathed out. "I believe that the pressure that was placed on your shoulders is a difficult burden to bare, especially when you didn't ask for it. I believe that you are unlike any woman I have ever met in my entire life, and I believe that you're not as brave as everyone thinks you are."

You moved your eyes to look at him curiously.

"Why do you think that?" You asked.

Jungkook shrugged once again.

"You're defensive." He stated. "From the moment you arrived here, you have claimed time and time again that you are not a goddess, you believe you are powerless and weak, and I believe that is the result of you waking up in a strange land, and not knowing where you are. You feel powerless because you feel trapped in your own skin. You have been searching and searching, but you can't find a way out. You feel useless."

You stared at him wide-eyed. Your stomach turned with sadness and realization as you lowered your head.

"How do you know all of that?"

The slave sent you a sad smile.

"Because I was you once." He said. "My parents sold me into slavery when I was five. They didn't even tell me about it, they didn't let me say goodbye to them, the taskmasters from the palace picked me up in the middle of the night, and I was brought here, to the palace, where I have been ever since."

You bit your lip and nodded.

"I'm so sorry." You stated. "That must have been horrible."

The young man shook his head, leaning back and resting on the palms of his hands.

"I have gotten over my parent's betrayal. I've moved on, and one day I'm going to escape these walls, and find a home where no man can rule over me. A place where I will never have to take another order again."

You smiled sadly at him.

"I wish you luck with that."

He sent you a large smile, and opened his mouth to speak, only to be interrupted by a new voice.

"Woman!"

You instantly frowned at the familiar voice, your gaze moving from Jungkook to land on Yoongi as he stomped towards you angrily, grabbing your arm and hoisting your body up roughly.

You winced in pain and tried to pull away from him but his grip was too strong.

"I have been searching endlessly for you!" He exclaimed, his gaze falling to Jungkook, who stood up. "I see that you have been playing with the palace rats."

You glared at him and shoved your arm away roughly.

"Don't talk about him like that."

The soldier raised an eyebrow and looked between the two of you curiously.

"I don't take orders from you, woman."

He grabbed your arm again and began pulling you towards the stairs.

"Where are we going?" You asked, annoyance lacing your voice.

"To the throne room," He started. "Our neighboring countries have sent delegates to discuss a peace treaty and the Pharaoh wants to show off his prized possession."

"Which would be?"

Yoongi smirked.

"You."

____________________________________________________________________________-

The throne room bustled with life as Yoongi harshly shoved you inside, his hand taking hold of your wrist and pulling you closer as he whispered in your ear.

"These people are at war with us, they cannot be trusted by any means necessary. The Pharaoh has requested that you be at his right hand, you should be safe there, but I will watch over you from the shadows. Do not fear."

You nodded your head, as Yoongi lightly pushed you in the direction of the throne.

There were no half-naked women in the pool this time, however the scribes and government officials were all sitting in the same position as last time.

Taehyung sat on his throne with a straight back, his light brown eyes outlined with dark kohl and his robes were finer than any thing you had seen him wear since arriving here. The atmosphere was thick and tense, not at all the way it was the day before.

There were no women in the room except for you, even the female servants were replaced with males.

You couldn't help but be nervous as you slowly walked up the stairs towards the throne.

Taehyung eyes you and motioned towards a small, golden chair which was placed directly beside his large throne. His expression was not one of playfulness or laughter. He was serious and on guard.

You slowly sat down beside of him, turning to face the empty throne room, and jumping when his large hand gently grabbed your own.

"Listen to me," He started slowly, his eyes never leaving the large, golden door of the throne room. "These men are dangerous, and they will not think twice about killing anyone in this room, including you. Stay by me at all times."

You slowly nodded, still in shock at her serious demeanor, he wasn't the same Taehyung from yesterday, he was now in full "Pharaoh mode".

"Let them enter."

The two male servants by the doors nodded their heads, grabbing the handles of the doors and pulling on them with all of their might, until they were fully opened.

Three men stood on the other side of the door and slowly entered the throne room.

One man had dark hair and a long beard, his clothes were all black and covered in sand, probably from his travels in the desert.

The other two men were clean shaven. One of them was dressed in red robes and the other wore a deep purple uniform.

"Great Pharaoh," The dark-haired man started. "How nice of you to see us on such short notice."

Taehyung tilted his chin up, his whole body radiating power and authority.

"I didn't have much of a choice, you showed up unannounced."

The man dressed in purple bowed, his smile staying on his face.

"Apologies. We just could not wait to put this war behind us. It has put great suffering on our people-"

"Lies." Taehyung interrupted.

The man tilted his head, still wearing the cocky smile.

"I beg your pardon?"

Taehyung sent a hard glare to the man.

"None of you are here because you care for the welfare of your people, you are here because you are all loosing this war, and you hope to gain something out of my kingdom before we completely destroy your armies."

The men's smiles faded, their arrogant facade falling quickly.

"I don't enjoy people trying to trick me," Taehyung stated. "So let's try this again."

The man dressed in red stepped forward, his eyes falling to you.

"Are you sure you should be speaking of political matters in front of a woman?"

Taehyung squeezed your hand gently.

"This "woman" is my honored guest and you will treat her with the respect she deserves or else I shall cut your tongue out and feed it to my dogs."

The man gulped and nodded as he began to speak nervously.

"We have nothing left, your majesty. You have taken over all of our resources and wealth, our countries need something to live off of."

Taehyung sighed boredly, his thumb beginning to rub over your knuckles gently.

"And why should that concern me?" He asked.

The man in purple spoke next.

"We have have the upper half of the Nile under our control." He stated. "We would happily sell it to you for a fair price."

Taehyung's brows raised in interest.

"How much would you be asking for?"

The dark haired man smiled.

"Not much, only enough gold to feed our people and rebuild our towns." He gaze fell onto you. "And maybe a few women to keep our soldiers satisfied."

Taehyung smiled widely.

"Consider it done." He said. "I shall have thirteen-thousand gold pieces delivered to you as well as seven of my concubines."

"And what about her?" He pointed to you, licking his lips. "She is far more beautiful than any concubine."

Taehyung's eyes flashed to you, before falling back on the man, anger swirling in his brown eyes.

"She is not for sale." He stated lowly.

"With all due respect your highness," The man began. "Everything has it's price."

Taehyung stood from his throne angrily, his hand releasing yours.

"Get out of my kingdom." He growled.

The men's eyes widened at his words.

"Surely you aren't so foolish as to throw away such a treasure for the sake of one whore!" The man in the purple yelled.

The angry Pharaoh marched down the stairs angrily, marching straight up to the man and roughly grabbing him by the collar.

"You show up in my home unannounced, you try to deceive me, and then you insult my guest with your vulgar, tasteless words. You should thank the gods that I do not have you killed right here, right now."

The man stared at him with wide eyes, fear evident on his face.

Taehyung released his shirt, shoving him towards the door harshly.

"Get out of my house." He growled. "And if I ever see you here again....You will not leave with your lives."

"You are making a mistake Pharaoh." The man stated. "Just wait. You'll see. That woman will be the death of you."

Taehyung smirked.

"If that is so, then I shall die a happy man."
