Chapter 34: Promises
"People ask me why is it so hard to trust people? I ask them, why is it so hard to keep a promise."
-Anonymous
"Oh my god."
The words that left your mouth dripped with fear and anxiety and your glowing blue eyes scanned over the paper in your hand, re-reading the words just to be sure that this wasn't some type of terrible nightmare..that your head wasn't playing tricks on you after everything that you had endured.
Your hands trembled uncontrollably, causing the parchment in your hands to shake.
This had to be a joke...this wasn't happening.
You wanted so badly to believe that either of those statements were true...but in all the time you have spent travelling dimensions, you knew that it was never a joke.
Yoongi's hazel eyes studied over you cautiously, his gaze worrisome as he watched your body tremble with pure terror.
One of his soldiers had given him the letter earlier in the morning, claiming that someone had left it in front of the palace the night before and it was addressed to you. Typically, Yoongi would have instructed the boy to give it to you himself, seeing as Yoongi was far too busy training....but he had an odd feeling about the letter.... something felt ...off...dangerous.
And from the look on your face, he could tell that he was right.
"Woman?"
His soft voice managed to grab your attention, your eyes moving up to stare at him.
He furrowed his brows at the look of horror that covered your features. He had only ever seen you scared once...that night you had a nightmare.
He remembered the way you begged him to stay with you until you fell asleep, desperately needing some kind of human contact in the darkness of your chambers. He had felt sorry for you then....he hated how hopeless and defeated you looked...
"What does it say?" He asked, a small amount of sternness lacing his tone as he outstretched his hand towards you.
You released a shaky breath, gently giving him the thin piece of parchment that had managed to terrify you.
The soldier's gaze lingered on you for a moment, before he moved them to the letter in his hands, reading it quietly to himself.
'Y/n,
Do not tell me that you truly believed this was over, surely you are more intelligent than that.
My master was most unhappy at your escape and I fear that when you return, he will take it upon himself to punish you as he sees fit. Do not worry. He will only damage your physical being, no harm shall come to your immortal soul.
My, my, you must think you are extremely clever, managing to escape from me, but I can assure you that you will be sorry for your actions....I'm sure you are curious as to why I have written you instead of finding you and dragging you back down where you belong....well the answer is simple.
Master wishes to break you in submission. You will come back to him willingly and of your own accord.
I am almost certain that you are probably laughing at the prospect, but I can assure you....you will come back.
You see, Y/n....We have the princes.
I am actually quite disappointed in how easy they were to capture...all I had to do was leave a letter on their beds telling them to meet with you in the garden....poor fools came running like mad men, especially Taehyung....I'm afraid he never saw it coming.
I have taken the liberty of placing one of the Bracelets on the vanity in your chambers...it will lead you to us.
I warn you, Y/n...my master is not patient...he gets angrier with every minute that passes..I would like to remind you of one thing....we only need one prince alive...so unless you want one of them to die, you will not keep us waiting.
You have one hour.
-Aten'
By now, the black-haired male's eyes were wide, his jaw hanging slack in shock at the words he had read. He didn't understand how this could have happened so fast...He had just seen both of the princes the night before...Jimin was reading and Taehyung was....crying.
He let out a low growl of anger, crumbling up the letter and throwing it into the floor, his hands moving to pull on his raven locks angrily as a long string of curses escaped his lips.
You merely sat still, eyes never leaving your hands that rested in your lap.
How did this happen? How did it go this far? Everything happened too fast for you to comprehend. You should have seen this coming...Anubis was on a schedule...tonight was the night that the planets aligned...his last chance to claim a vessel...You had hoped that he would just give up and allow himself to waste away.
But no.
It was never that simple was it? There always had to be danger...always bloodshed and pain. You were beginning to get sick of always being in the middle of every terrifying scenario.
Your eyes slowly moved over to the golden bracelet that sat on the vanity in the corner...the ruby eyes of the serpent staring back at you....mocking you in your time of weakness. You wanted nothing more than to grab that thing and smash it onto the ground....but it was your only way of finding them....saving them.
It seemed as though Yoongi could read your mind, his hand reaching out and grabbing yours.
"No." He said coldly. "You cannot even consider it."
A heavy sigh left you as you gazed at him.
"I have to do it." You stated. "I have to save them."
Yoongi growled in protest, his eyes hardening.
"If you go back, you'll be giving him exactly what he wants."
You nodded your head, standing up on your feet and moving your hands away from his.
"I don't have a choice." Your voice was soft.
His eyes softened at your tone, laced with fear and anxiety.
Yoongi approached you softly, his hands cupping your face gently, hazel eyes boring into your blue ones.
"You do have a choice." He started." After tonight...Anubis will die, he will have no power in this world anymore...you'll be saving millions of people."
His words caused a sad smile to pull on your lips.
For a moment you felt yourself go back.
Back to The Four Kingdoms.
Back to that night in Pamelia when you had demanded that you be allowed to die in order to save everyone...you said it was for the greater good and it was.
But none of them would listen to you...they constantly told you no. They were always so protective and hardheaded...claiming that they only wanted you to be safe.
You remembered how angry you got with them all....calling them hypocrites for wanting to save one life over millions.
But now, it seemed that you were the hypocrite.
Now you could understand why they didn't want you to leave...why they wanted you safe at all costs...because they loved you.
You knew that Taehyung and Jimin would both proudly die in order to save everyone...but you supposed that you were just selfish...
Because even though, you knew it was wrong, even though you knew it was stupid... you couldn't let them die.
"They need me."
He frowned.
"No. We need you. I-I need you, Y/n. Stay here. Stay safe."
You shook your head, walking over to your vanity and picking up the open bracelet.
"They'll die if I don't go."
"And you'll die if you do."
You squeezed your eyes shut, taking in a deep breath.
"Yoongi," You started. "I'm going."
His brows furrowed together in defiance, his feet walking to you.
"Then I am going with you. If any of them try to harm you, I'll kill them."
You swallowed hard, deciding it was best if you didn't argue, after all...if there was any way to stop Anubis' plan without having anyone die, you would prefer it be that way.
"Okay," You breathed. "But you have to promise me something."
His eyes searched yours for a moment, before he nodded his head slowly.
"Anything."
You took a deep breath, moving your eyes to the bracelet you now held in your hands.
"Promise me that if things go South....if he somehow...gets the better of me...You'll kill me."
His eyes widened at your request, his head shaking vigorously.
"I cannot promise that." He stated. "I cannot kill you."
"You have to," You argued. "You said it yourself, if he preforms The Bonding....he will be unstoppable and millions of people will die."
The soldier remained silent, stomach churning at the thought of having to end your life.
You were the only woman he had taken interest in for years. Before you arrived here, he had no faith in anything, he was content by simply living his day-to-day life in boredom and loneliness .
But then you showed up.
You filled his life with laughter and smiles, you brought out a part of him that he believed he had lost long ago when he was a mere child...he had come to admire you in every way.....he had come to care for you...and now you stood before him, asking him to vow that he would end your life if need be.
He wanted so badly to reject you and tell you that he would never do such a thing..
But you were right.
If The Bonding happened.....All of Egypt would suffer...if not the world.
He let out a shaky breath.
"Very well," He croaked.
"I promise."
