Chapter 21: Sight
"There is much I haven't shared with you, along the road."
-Elton John, El Dorado
If there ever was a moment to look back over your life, a moment to regret the chances you did not take, a moment to long for your old life or wish for a new one.....It was this moment.
As you walked towards the throne room, heart pounding in your chest, you could only focus your mind on your anger and frustration, not just towards the Pharaoh or Writer, but towards yourself. i You had allowed all of this to happen. You said yes to Writer against your better judgement. You trusted a complete and utter stranger with your life, and he betrayed you.
You shouldn't have been surprised. You should have seen this coming. After all, you barely even knew the man, it wasn't as if he actually earned your trust, or even owed you loyalty.
The fact that he had modeled your shackle after a snake was comical to you, it reminded you of Writer and his deceptiveness. The way he slithered into your life only to bite you and leave you to die.
You slowly moved your gaze up to look at Jin, whose head was held high as he walked beside you. His demeanor simply radiated with royal pride, but his eyes held a silent sadness. The young royal knew that he was walking you to your bleak future. A future of servitude and constant regret.
He hated himself for letting things get so out of hand. He didn't know you very well, he had no idea where you were from or if you were even a goddess, but he did know that you didn't deserve the life that was about to be forced upon you by his selfish cousin.
When Jimin died, he saw the way you handled everything, the way you were constantly by the blind priest's side, holding his cold hand and petting his hair. You barely ever left him and when you did, it was to give Hoseok and the others some time with their diseased friend.
Jin found himself not even caring if you were a goddess, he didn't care if you had special abilities or some kind of power to make Egypt rich, because even if you weren't some all-knowing goddess, you were a good person, and people like you were far more rare and precious.
The two of you approached the doors to the throne room, your blue eyes taking in the familiar golden doors which now served as the gateway to your ultimate fate.
"When you belong to the Pharaoh," Jin started with a heavy voice. "You never want for anything."
You almost laughed at his words, a painful resolution forming in your heart.
"Except freedom."
Jin swallowed hard, his adam's apple bobbing up and down as his head nodded slowly. He could not think of anything else to say to you. His failed attempt to give you some sort of comfort, only seemed to make you even more upset.
The sound of rushed footsteps approaching the two of you filled the hall, along with the shuffling of clothing as Jungkook ran towards the two of you, panic evident on his face.
"Y/n!" He called out, grabbing your attention.
Sighing, you slowly turned on your heels to face him. You were in no mood to socialize with anyone at the moment, not even him.
He slowed himself to stop in front of you, his chest heaving from running.
You eyed him curiously.
"Wha-"
"Come. We must hurry." He interjected as he grabbed your wrist, pulling you away from the dreaded golden doors.
You furrowed your eyebrows, pulling your hand away from him.
"What are you doing?"
He frowned, taking a small step towards you, his chocolate orbs moving over to Jin.
"I came to get you away from this place. I know of a way out, but we must leave now."
He reached for your wrist again but you quickly moved away from him, your blue eyes saddening at his words.
"I-I can't." You stuttered out quietly, your other hand playing with the bracelet on your wrist.
The young slave shook his head.
"Yes you can. I just told you, I know a wa-"
"I can't Jungkook. I really can't....I'm sorry."
His confused expression morphed into one of sadness, his eyes scanning over your features as he moved closer, his voice lowering.
"If you are afraid of the Pharaoh finding you, I swear that I will never reveal your location."
You shook your head.
"I'm not scared of him."
His brows furrowed.
"Then what is the problem?"
For a moment, you thought about telling him everything. About Writer and the bracelet, why you literally were not allowed to leave the palace. If you could only open your mouth and tell him the truth of what's been happening, maybe everything would be okay, maybe he would understand....
But you couldn't do that..even if you did, he would not believe you. If you told him, he could be placed in danger. Writer told you never to tell anyone your true purpose there, and with the way he betrayed you, you would not put it past him to harm anyone that you told, for fear of his little secret getting out.
"I can't tell you," You sighed out. "I'm sorry."
The brown-eyed man stared at you in awe.
"What are you talking about, Y/n? Why can't you tell me?"
You frowned.
"You should leave, Jungkook."
He shook his head, stepping closer to you, his expression becoming angry.
"I don't know why you are so frightened and I know when the time is right, you will tell me, but right now, you cannot allow fear to control you. I came to stop you from walking through those doors, and I intend to fulfill my mission."
You sighed heavily.
"I've already told you; I. can't."
He huffed angrily, his dark eyes staring into yours.
"Stop speaking foolishly." He growled at you. "Do you want to end up like a slave? Do you want to end up like me?!"
You remained silent, your eyes falling to the ground.
"I am beaten and bruised every. single. day." He stated. "I am treated like some kind of dog. I work and work, until I cannot feel my arms, and I am constantly searching for some sort of food, just to keep myself alive! I stay up late at night asking myself why I wasn't good enough for my parents. Why didn't they love me? Why did they hate their own son so much, that they would sell me without even blinking!?"
"Jungkook, I-"
"I have no one!" He yelled, his voice cracking in the most heartbreaking way. "Jimin, he-he's gone!My best friend, the only person who didn't scoff at my presence, the only one who made sure I was healthy, the only good man in this god-forsaken desert is gone! And I have no one except for you. You're all I have Y/n. I don't want to be alone."
You bit your lip, slowly moving your blue gaze to study his face.
"I'm sorry, Jungkook." You stated softly. "But I have to stay here."
He slowly nodded his head. There was no changing your mind, there was no negotiating. This was your decision and he had to respect that, not matter how badly he didn't want to.
His eyes watered slightly as he stared at you, his hands moving to rest on the sides of your face as his thumbs stroked your cheeks softly.
"My biggest fear," He breathed. "Is that he will tire of you, and you will become just like me. Alone."
If you said that you weren't afraid of that happening, you would be lying to yourself.
"That won't happen." You bluffed.
Jungkook slowly nodded and placed a chaste kiss to your forehead before stepping away from you.
"If you have any hidden miracles, now would be the time to use them."
You chuckled sadly, nodding.
"I'll be sure to remember that."
He only nodded, before turning on his heel and slowly walking away, leaving you to, once again, face your fate.
Jin glanced at you, grabbing your hand in reassurance.
"Are you ready?"
You inhaled deeply, nodding your head.
"Let's do this."
__________________________________________________________
The young Pharaoh sat proudly in his throne, his kohl-lined eyes watching the golden doors, waiting for your imminent arrival. He was adorned in his finest robes, and even wore the ornamental headdress that was only worn at the most divine of ceremonies.
He had longed for this day ever since he placed the bet with the priest. Today was the day he would finally possess you, the day that you would fully belong to him.
You had been quite the tease these past few days, wearing those revealing dresses and staring at him with a fire he had never seen before. It was almost enough to drive him mad with hunger for you.
He couldn't understand why you were so resistant to him. You were constantly avoiding his gaze, and never approaching him. At first, he had considered the possibility that you hated him, but then you saved his life and he came to the conclusion that you would not save him, if you did not care for him.
His heart leapt in his throat as the doors creaked open, his brown eyes snapping towards the golden fixtures in excitement.
His smile, however, was soon replaced with a scowl as he took in the sight before him.
You walked hand-in-hand with his cousin.
All excitement was slowly replaced with burning anger.
The absolute gaul of him.
If it had been anyone else, he would have had their hands chopped off and removed from their bodies. How dare he touch you so informally!
Anger swam behind his kohl-stained eyes as he watched Jin walk you to the middle of the room, and release your hand before walking to stand beside the young Pharaoh.
Beginning the trial, he moved his glare from Jin to you, watching as you fiddled with your thumbs.
"Do you know why you are here?" He asked loudly, catching everyone's attention.
You nodded slowly, your blue eyes raising to meet his.
"I do."
Taehyung raised an eyebrow, tilting his head as he eyed you.
"Then you know what is going to happen." He stated. "You have failed to prove your divinity, therefore, you have lost the bet and now belong to me."
"Cousin," Jin started. "I do not think that this is truly wise. Perhaps-"
"I do not care what you think!" Taehyung roared, causing everyone in the room to freeze in terror. "The priest made the gamble, and he lost. If the fool were not already rotting, I would have him killed this instant, but he managed to snake his way out of his part."
"He died." You stated.
The Pharaoh sighed, facing you.
"What?"
You sent him a hard glare.
"He died." you repeated angrily. "He didn't "snake his way out". He died."
He scoffed, rolling his eyes.
"I hardly care for the terminology. He made a commitment and left you to face punishment alone."
"He didn't leave me alone." You said.
He chuckled darkly.
"Oh, really?" His eyes scanned the room. "Then where is he? I do not see him here."
You remained silent, your mind not being able to come up with a good response, much to Taehyung's delight.
"Why don't you just accept the truth? He knew he was dying, he knew he wouldn't be able to save you, and yet he still risked your life, because he knew he had nothing to lose. He didn't care about you. He never did."
You bit your lip at his harsh words, cursing yourself for not being able to respond.
Taehyung leaned back in his throne, a satisfied smile on his face as he watch you war with yourself.
"But I do." He stated.
Your eyes snapped up to him, causing his smile to widen.
"I have cared for you since day one." He continued. "I never would have gambled with your life like that. If you become mine, commit yourself to me, I will never let anything or anyone harm you ever again."
You scoffed.
"I'm already yours, remember? You own me now."
Taehyung chuckled deeply.
"I do not wish for you to be my concubine."
You tilted your head, eyeing him cautiously.
"Then what do you wish?"
He smiled.
"Be mine...forever."
Your eyes widened as you took in his words.
"You mean-?"
He nodded.
"Become my wife."He breathed out.
Jin's eyes widened beside of him.
"My Pharaoh, I-"
"Silence!" Taehyung interrupted, before turning back to you. "Wed me, and you shall become queen over all of this land. I shall move heaven and Earth for you, I shall even make the Nile dry up if you ask it of me."
You grabbed your head, your mind racing with numerous thoughts.
Marry him? That had to be the most insane thing you've heard since you arrived here. He has treated you like garbage and mocked you at every turn. How could he possibly expect you to marry him?
Although....If you did, maybe he would allow you more freedom. You would have more power and resources, and maybe you could get this god forsaken bracelet off of your wrist.
"I-I accept your offer."
You could hardly believe the words that just left your mouth. Did you really just agree to spend the rest of your life with this man? You could feel yourself becoming sick as you watch his smile widen.
Everyone's mouth dropped open with shock at your acceptance, they all seemed to be in utter shock, not that you could blame them.
Taehyung stood up, his eyes still on you.
"Very well." He beamed. "Let it be written, that on the next full moon, Lady Y/n shall wed the rightful king of Egypt."
"I suppose that the gods have blessed me."
A new voice suddenly chimed into the conversation, causing everyone's eyes to search around the room for the source.
"I have come back from the dead only for my kingdom, but I seem to have gained a wife as well."
Your eyes widened.
The voice was so familiar.
Your heart began to pound in your chest. He was dead. Wasn't he?
"J-Jimin?"
Suddenly the familiar chestnut-haired man stepped out of the shadows, his once pale face now glowed with color, his weak frail state now replaced with a healthy, strong demeanor and his gray eyes were now a perfect shade of hazel.
He offered you a large smile, his hazel eyes staring straight into yours. Wait. Could he....see you?
"You saved me." He breathed. "I told you. You are a goddess."
You couldn't believe what was happening in front of you. Just a few hours ago, he was dead and rotting on a stone table. His burial was being planned. How was he aliv-
The elixir.
It must have taken some time to affect him.
It slowly healed his body, from the inside out, giving him his sight back.
Your eyes watered with happiness as you wrapped your arms around him, hugging him tightly.
"I'm so glad you're okay. I missed you so much."
He smiled, and inhaled your glorious scent, his arms wrapping around your waist.
"Thank you for saving me, young goddess."
A low growl resounded from Taehyung as he stood to his feet.
"Take your filthy hands off of my betrothed."
Jimin released you from his grip and moved his gaze to Taehyung.
"Don't you mean, my betrothed?"
Taehyung scowled, and crossed his arms.
"What are you talking about, priest?"
Jimin glared at him before, moving his gaze to Hoseok, who was standing in the corner.
The star-gazer walked forward, holding a large pile of papers in his arms. Jimin grabbed them and threw them in the floor at Taehyung's feet.
"What is this?" Taehyung snarled.
Jimin smiled.
"Those are the documents of my birth." He stated. "It seems that there is much you do not know, little brother."
A/N,
Ahhhhh, I love the smell of a cliffhanger in the morning.
