Chapter 2: Scrolls
"History is the unrolled scroll of prophecy."
-James A. Garfield
Hoseok ran a hand through his messy hair, a tired sigh escaping his lips as he walked down the dimly lit hallway towards the temple.
He had, had a long, tiring day. He spent all of the previous night studying the heavens for any sign of change in the stars, he slaved over his telescope in the darkness, and in the day time, he wrote down his studies.
It was his job as chief astronomer to know everything that happened in the sky. He had studied it his whole life, and if one star was out of place, he would notice it.
Hoseok was the best at his job, his wit was unmatched amungst any other scholar, but lately he had begun to feel useless. The heavens had been changing, stars were moving and sometimes even disappearing. The new moon cycle had been thrown out of balance and it effected the tides of the river.
The astronomer had racked his brain, searching for any answers as to why the heavens would make such sudden, and bold changes.
He frowned, pulling his documents closer to him as he entered the quiet temple.
The papers in his hands were his studies over the last week. Part of his job was to give his studies to the high priest for studying, just to make sure that the gods weren't angry or punishing them. Hoseok had to learn to write with dots, instead of actual words, that was the only way Jimin could read his studies and fully understand them.
The temple was completely silent as Hoseok entered, which was quite odd, considering that it was already dusk, which was the time of Jimin's daily offering.
"Jimin?" Hoseok's voice broke through the silence as he gently placed his research on one of the wooden tables, his brown eyes searching for the familiar head of chestnut hair.
He was met with no answer, which worried him.
Jimin never missed his offerings, not once. He feared that the gods would take offense and reek vengeance on him.
Hoseok stepped away from the table, his eyes falling upon one of the white, sheath curtains, the outline of a body clearly visible as the torchlight illuminated the curtain, casting a shadow.
The astronomer's body shot into defensive mode. It wasn't Jimin behind the curtain, and no one else was allowed down here.
Hoseok slowly approached the curtain, his eyes watching the shadow dance across the thin curtains as the mystery person, picked up some sort of cloth, wrapping it around their body.
His hands slowly reached for the thin material of the curtain, taking a deep breath as he slowly pulled them back.
His breath caught in his throat.
Hoseok's chocolate gaze trailed down the woman's bare back, his eyes falling from her h/l,h/c, hair, down to her tanned shoulders, and finally landing on the curve of her spine.
Her bottom half was covered by a sheath, white material that fell from her hips, down to her ankles, her whole top half was bare.
Hoseok could only see her back, his eyes taking in the smooth skin shamelessly as his tongue darted out to lick his lips.
You released a heavy sigh as you wrapped the blue material around your upper body, bringing it up and crossing it over your chest, before tying it in a knot around your neck.
After Jimin's "revelation" and thirty minutes of you insisting that you were, in fact, "human", Jimin and Jungkook decided to give you and change of clothes, saying that the ones you wore were too..."Revealing". Even though the clothes they gave you were less than modest in your opinion.
You grabbed your hair, twisting it around and pulling it into a loose knot on your head, grabbing your old clothes and turning around.
Your eyes widened as a loud gasp left your lips.
Hoseok opened his mouth to speak, but couldn't find any words to say, as a dark blush rose up his neck and rested on his cheeks.
"I-I- This isn't what it looks like." He stuttered out. "I-I came looking for Jimin. A-Are you one of the Pharaoh's concubines?"
You grabbed your necklace nervously, your fingers playing with the small vile of liquid, as your blue eyes glared at the man.
"Get out!"
The astronomer nodded, fully agreeing with you. He needed to make an exit, fast.
He turned on his heel, his feet carrying him away from you swiftly as he marched towards the temple's exit.
"Hoseok?" Jimin's soft voice rang through the sanctuary, his gray eyes searching the room as he slowly walked in, his hands holding onto the stone walls.
Hoseok stopped walking, turning to face the blind high priest, wearing a nervous smile.
"What was all the shouting about?" Jimin asked quietly.
The dirty blond man cleared his throat, his eyes watching as you stepped out from behind the curtain, crossing your arms.
"I-I came to give you my weekly reports. I've left them on the table, you can review them in your own time. Goodbye."
He turned around, ready to walk out of the awkward tension.
"Wait." Jimin started. "Why the big rush. Stay and eat with us. Jungkook had some chores to finish up, but he'll be along shortly."
Hoseok shook his head fervently as he watched the chestnut haired man walk towards the table, his arms out stretched in front of him.
"I really should be getting back to my studies."
"Nonsense." The high priest said. "You have had your head in the clouds non-stop since the beginning of this month. Stay. Eat."
The astronomer's eye shot over to you, watching as you shifted nervously.
"I'll stay."
Jimin smiled widely at his words, his hands finally reaching the wooden table and feeling for Hoseok's papers.
"We will have a guest tonight." He stated. "She is quite esteemed and very important, so please make a good first impression."
Hoseok's eyes widened and it took everything in him not to punch himself in the face right then and there.
Jimin never had dinner with any women, he barely even left the temple, and now he invited a woman to dine with him and share the company of his friends. It struck Hoseok as odd.
Jimin had never taken interest in anything other than his worship. So what made you so special?
Wait.
Were you and Jimin....involved?
That would explain why a you were in the temple putting your clothes on.It would explain why you weren't wearing the traditional kohl around your eyes, and it would also explain why Jimin had invited you, a woman, to dine with men.
Hoseok cleared his throat and slowly moved over to where Jimin stood, his chocolate eyes watching as Jimin used his fingers to read his reports.
"Jimin,"
The high priest tilted his head in the direction of Hoseok's voice, stopping his reading.
"Yes?"
Hoseok sighed, glancing over at you as you folded up your old clothes and placed them on the floor.
"I am your friend, and you know that I, one-hundred percent, support you taking a break from your stress, but I don't think that having relations with one of the Pharaoh's concubines is wise. If he found out he would-"
Jimin furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, setting the documents back onto the wooden table.
"She isn't a concubine, and I am not having relations with her."
Hoseok raised his eyebrows.
"Then why is she changing her garments here while you are in the temple with her?"
Jimin chuckled.
"Because she knows I am unable to see her."
The astronomer frowned, scolding himself for his insensitivity. He was too quick to assume and he felt like a terrible person because of it.
"If she is not a concubine then who is she? Women like that are usually here because the Pharaoh sent for them."
Jimin smiled widely.
"She was brought here by the Nile. Jungkook had found her floating along the top of the water. She was dressed in strange garments."
Hoseok frowned.
"Forgive me, but that does not answer my question."
The high priest chuckled.
"She was sent here by the gods as a gift to Egypt. She was born of the Nile, and brought by it's tides. She is a goddess."
The astronomer's eyes widened, as he looked over at you.
"A goddess?" He repeated in a whispered tone. "How can you tell? She appears to be human."
Jimin nodded.
"Her body does appear that way, yes. But her soul is marked by the gods. Her eyes are stained by the color of life. I have felt the power she holds, I have witnessed it first hand. She is truly a blessing to us."
Hoseok nodded, his eyes falling onto Jimin's gray orbs.
"But why is she here? Why would the gods send her to us?"
The young priest turned, grabbing Hoseok's research and handing it to him.
"Maybe this is why." He said. "The heavens are still out of place, stars are constantly disappearing and neither of us can seem to figure out why. Maybe she was sent here to help us."
He sighed, staring down at the scrolls in his hands.
"Do you really believe she can help us?"
Jimin nodded.
"I do."
Hoseok smiled.
"Very well then." he started. "We should present her to the Pharaoh."
A/N,
I'M SOOOOOO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!
This book has already received so much love and support that I can't even begin to thank you all enough.
If I'm being 100% honest, I was terrified to go through wit the whole "universe travelling" idea. It was bold and risky, but I have gotten incredible support from each and every one of you and I can't believe how much I have grown because of it.
I love all of you so much.
ALSO
I promise that I haven't forgotten about the "character Q&A" on TFK (The Four Kingdoms) I just haven't had much time to go through and read all of the questions. If you have any you would like to ask, please comment them in TFK or post them on my message board. I promise I will post the answers soon.
I LOVE YOU ALL
-Max
