Chapter 18: Memories
"Live for the moments you can't put into words."
-Anonymous
A heavy huff of air left your lips as you marched through the garden angrily, your feet taking you in no specific direction. You didn't know where you were going, and you didn't care. You just needed to be away from that terrible man.
The audacity of that stubborn brute never failed to shock you. You had just saved his life, and risked yours in the process, and yet he wouldn't even consider giving you one more day of freedom.
You had really begun to thin that he was changing for the better. The note he had written you left your hopes high. You really thought he was beginning to progress and move past his constant anger and frustration.
But, of course, you were wrong. No matter what you said or did, he never seemed to show any signs of changing his actions or character. He reminded you of a child. Constantly seeking attention and praise, whenever he was refused those things he would stomp his foot and throw a tantrum. He would abuse his power and hurt anyone who tried to stand in his way.
You were really beginning to lose all hope for the young Pharaoh.
He was nothing like the Taehyung you had come to know in the previous dimension.
You couldn't help but feel like you had lost him amungst the chaos. You could feel yourself forgetting his soft voice, and the way he smiled at you. Taehyung was the very first man you had met in the previous world. He guided you and told you all the things that you may have needed to know. He looked out for you, and whenever he did something to wrong you, he was always the first to apologize.
The Taehyung you knew now...was the complete opposite.
Your footsteps slowed until your feet were no longer stomping down the long hallway.
Your body was still, but your mind was racing.
It was as though all the sadness of leaving The Four Kingdoms suddenly crashed down on you like some sort of heavy weight. Memories of your time there surging through your brain as you began to recall your favorite things about each of the boys you had left behind.
Jimin's smile.
Jin's constant flirting.
Namjoon's kind eyes.
Hoseok's hopefulness.
Taehyung's protectiveness.
Jungkook's jokes.
Yoongi's laugh.
You never even got to say goodbye.
You never got to tell Jungkook what a great king he was going to be. You never got to watch the stars with Jimin again. You never got to watch Jin rule over his kingdom. You never got to study with Namjoon, or laugh with Hoseok one last time. You never got to eat cake with Taehyung. And you never got to hold hands with Yoongi.....one last time.
You had been so focused on fixing this universe that you had never stopped long enough to realize exactly what you had left behind.
You missed them.
Your knees suddenly gave out from underneath you, your body falling onto the stone pathway on which you walked only moments ago.
You had always been told that anger was a terrible thing, and that you should never allow yourself to dwell on it, because if you do, it will slowly begin to consume you, until there is nothing left.
But in that moment, you wanted nothing more than to be angry.
Because being angry was far more bearable than being heartbroken.
Tears had begun to spring to your eyes as you moved your gaze to the heavens above you.
Night had fallen over the kingdom of Egypt.
Stars were scattered amungst the sky in random patterns, each one shedding it's own tiny light through the darkness of the heaven.
Usually on a clear night like this, you would make a point to stop and watch the sky for a moment, it always made you happier to watch as the night twinkled. When you were younger, you would constantly find yourself wondering if the stars were watching you, like you watched them.
Your mother once told you that the stars told stories to us every night, but they had no voice, so they spoke through their twinkling, each pulse of light speaking a different adventure, a different tale of love and war and even betrayal.
You, of course, never believed her, thinking that it was just your mother rambling on like she tended to do when you were young.
But now you couldn't help but wonder if she was right.
Did the stars actually tell stories?
Did they really see you as you stared up at them, like you did in that moment?
You wondered what they would say if they told your story.
Would they tell the story of a brave, young woman taken from her home and forced into another universe? Or would they tell the story of a sad, lonely girl crying beneath the night sky, longing for a life that she would never have again?
You sniffed as the cold of night passed by you, embracing you in a cool, frozen breeze.
"I miss you." You breathed out sadly as a single tear dripped from your blue orbs.
The sound of soft footsteps approaching pulled you from your thoughts.
You didn't bother to see who was coming. You didn't exactly care at the moment. You just wished to be alone.
"I had a feeling that you would come out here."
Jimin's soft voice broke through the thick silence of the garden.
You sighed out exasperated, wiping your tears from your rosy cheeks as you moved yourself to sit comfortably on the ground beneath you.
"Please leave me alone."
Jimin's heart ached as you spoke.
It was not your words that affected him, but the way your voice cracked ever so slightly and the way you sniffed at the end of your sentence.
Since he was born, the only way the high priest could experience the world was by hearing.
Hearing the way people spoke to their loved ones.
Hearing the way the wind made the reeds whistle by the Nile.
Hearing the way that the water flowed outside of his bedroom window.
He had constantly listened all of his life.
So he knew heartbreak when he heard it.
And when you spoke....He heard it.
The young priest slowly lowered himself down beside of you, taking note of the unhappy sound that let your lips as he did so. Obviously you wanted to be alone after to terrible events that had just occurred, however he knew that you were in desperate need of a friendly face in the cruel world of pride you were surrounded by.
"Are they as beautiful as everyone says?"
Your blue eyes slowly moved over to the chestnut-haired man, his gray eyes moving to look above the two of you.
"What?" Your voice came out in a soft whisper.
A sad smile formed on Jimin's face, his dull eyes never once moving from the sparkling heavens.
"The stars." He states. "Are they as beautiful as everyone says?"
You bit your lip and nodded sadly, moving your gaze back to the sky you had become so familiar with.
"No." You said quietly. "They are far more beautiful than anyone could possibly say."
Jimin's lips turned upward at your comment.
"Tell me what they look like." He whispered. "I have always wanted to know."
You moved your eyes back onto the blind man.
"I don't think my words would do them justice."
Jimin shrugged, his hand finding yours.
"Do not worry. I will not know the difference."
Ouch.
You almost flinched at his words.
You couldn't comprehend how he could possibly speak about his handicap so casually, like it didn't even matter.
"W-Well," You started slowly, clearing your throat. "Think of the way you read."
The young priest tilted his head.
"The way I read?"
You nodded.
"You use dots to read right? Each dot on the paper is in a different place, but each one of them has a meaning behind it. Stars are like that. To most people they are just bright dots in the sky, but if you take time to actually study them, there is much more to be discovered."
The blind man smiled weakly, his thumb stroking your hand softly.
"Do you think that I could read the stars if I could touch them?"
You chuckled breathlessly.
"I don't think so."
Jimin's smile remained on his face as he stared blindly at the sky.
"Pity." He breathed. "I'm sure they have wonderful stories to tell."
Your breath hitched in your throat at his words.
It was liked he had read your mind, like he had just heard your inner thoughts as you looked up at the sky only moments ago.
Your hand moved down to fiddle with the small vile around your neck.
A loud cough erupted from Jimin, causing the young priest to place his hand over his mouth. His body shaking as more hearty coughs left his lips.
You watched him with worry, gently patting his back.
"Are you okay, Jimin? Do you need to go inside?"
The chestnut-haired male shook his head, waving you off with his hand. He didn't want to worry you.
Your blue eyes widened in horror as you watched blood begin to drip down his chin, his body shaking violently as he removed his hand from his mouth, gasping in between his coughing.
You looked around frantically.
What were you supposed to do in this kind of situation?
You began to panic, moving your body closer to his. You were aware of his sickness, but you never imagined that it was this bad.
"I-I'm going to go find help!" You stated.
You began to move to your feet, heart pounding out of rhythm in your chest.
Jimin's hand shot out to grab yours as he breathed heavily, wheezing with every breath.
"No." He said softly. "There is no point, I will be gone by the time you come back."
You looked around nervously.
"You need a doctor to help you. I-"
"Pl-Please stay." He started quietly as tears formed in his gray eyes. "I don't want to die alone."
Your breath seemed to leave your body at his desperate words, his hands gripping yours as if they were his last hope for life.
You didn't understand why this had come over him so suddenly. A few moments ago, he was smiling and speaking without a care in the world, and now he was on the ground, coughing up blood and holding onto your hands.
You knew that the sane thing would be to run inside and find a doctor, someone who could take care of him, her the way he held your hand, made you want to stay.
You slowly adjusted your self, allowing the priest to rest his head on your shoulder as you cried silent tears for your friend.
"T-Tell me more a-about the stars." Jimin choked out weakly, his breathing becoming labored.
You bit your lip sadly, trying not to make any sad sounds as you watched your friend slowly die beside you, you wanted nothing more than to run for help, but you could not just refuse Jimin his dying wish.
You breathed in a shaky breath.
"Y-You can't count them." You stated. "There's so many that they can't be counted."
Jimin's eyes slowly began to glaze over as his breathing slowly became less labored.
"I w-wonder why that is."
You looked down, your hands clutching your dress tightly as you stared at your knees, tears falling from your eyes.
"Some people believe that when we die, we become stars."
The priest's eyes slowly began to close.
"A-And then what happens?A...After we become stars?"
You looked down.
"We tell stories, and watch over people."
"A..And, do they know y..your story, yo...young goddess?"
You laugh sadly, shaking your head.
"I don't know."
Jimin smiled weakly, his eyes closing for the last time.
"W..Well when I get up there," He coughed, "I'll..I'll be sure to ask them about you."
You couldn't stop the tears from falling after those words left his mouth.
You listened as he breathing slowed until his last breath fanned across your neck.
A loud sob escaped your lips as you slowly moved his head to rest in your lap, his limp hand still holding yours even in his death.
You gently stroked his paling face, his gentle eyes closed and giving the appearance of serenity and calmness.
You gently played with the vile around your neck, your mind debating with itself as you remembered Writer's words.
"This is for emergencies only. It will heal any wounds you may have. I know that you are a selfless person, but I beg of you, do not use this on anyone other than yourself. You are irreplaceable."
You bit your lip in thought, staring at the vile and then back to Jimin.
You could handle yourself fine.
Jimin was the one who needed this. You just hoped you weren't too late.
You gently placed the vile to his lips, watching as the blue liquid poured into his bloody mouth.
Your eyes studied his face for any sort of reaction to the elixir .
But there were none.
Jimin's body remained motionless in your lap.
You shook your head fervently, your blue eyes widening as you gently delivered a few light smacks to his face.
"Wake up Jimin." You breathed heavily, wiping the blood from his chin. "W-Wake up."
He didn't respond to you, he simply continued to grow colder in your arms.
You hiccuped, choking on your tears as your body began to shake uncontrollably. Jimin was the only one who tried to help you. He saved your life and tried to make you as comfortable as you could possibly be. He was the only one who seemed to care about you before you were some kind of goddess, before you were special.
You had one chance to save him.
And you blew it.
You should have known.
The elixir didn't work on dead people.
You looked up through your tears as sadness covered your entire being.
Maybe you were crazy,
but you could have sworn that you saw another star sparkling brightly in the sky.
