Chapter 17: Secrets

"Three may keep a secret if two of them are dead."

-Benjamin Franklin

The doors to the throne room slammed open as the livid Pharaoh entered. His demeanor was one of anger and seriousness as his kohl-stained eyes moved about the large room.

The sun had only begun to set, the sky was stained in light hues of pinks, oranges and purples. A few stars were slowly coming into view as the moon began to rise over the great kingdom of Egypt.

Taehyung marched to his throne, taking a seat upon the golden structure as his arms rested on the arm rests.

After the canine was killed, he called off the party, evacuating all civilians from the palace. An emergency meeting was called, pushing the palace into a state of panic.

Someone had tried to kill the king.

Taehyung was furious.

Being born into the royal family, there were thousands of threats made to the young Pharaoh, and there were even a few occurrences where someone would actually make an attempt on his life, but no one had ever gotten so close to succeeding. If it hadn't been for you, Taehyung would be laying dead in the floor.

His eyes watched as his advisers scattered into the throne room, each one more disheveled than the last. It was obvious to Taehyung that none of these men had ever prepared for a situation such as this.

He almost scoffed at ow pathetic they all seemed. Egypt was the strongest country in the world, and yet the most brilliant, regal men were scurrying around like mindless toads.

His chocolate gaze fell on Jin, watching as he entered the room, grace and poise radiating off of him. He wasn't panicked, or if he was, he was certainly doing a good job of hiding it.

The young Pharaoh had always envied that about his cousin. He always managed to keep a cool and mature demeanor, even in times of crisis such as this. He had always known how to contain his fear and do what needed to be done.

You slowly peeked your head into the throne room, your heart pounding in your chest as your blue eyes fell onto Taehyung.

His body was still, almost as if he were frozen in time as his eyes slowly scanned over the small crowd of men before him. His ringed fingers tapped against the gold of his throne in almost a calming way, his other hand moving to rest over his mouth in thought.

It was almost unnerving how calm he seemed. Like he didn't even care that someone had just tried to kill him.

The young Pharaoh's eyes slowly tore away from his officials, scanning over the room until they rested on you.

His once calm gaze softened as he stared at you, his eyes shifting between your own as he silently studied your reaction to all of this.

You swallowed.

If you were being honest, you weren't exactly sure if you should even be in here. This was a major state of crisis and you weren't exactly a part of the kings council, you were just...you.

You frowned under his strong gaze and slowly began to creep away from the door frame, deciding it would be best not to fully enter the throne room while they discussed such fragile matters of state.

You slowly turned on your heels, only to be met with a hard chest.

You stumbled back slightly , your gaze moving up to meet your offender's.

Jimin smiled, his arms reaching out to steady you as he stared ahead blankly. His hand gently encompassed your upper arms, his thumb rubbing the smooth, sun-kissed skin.

"Y/n?" He inquired.

You nodded slowly, your blue eyes locked on his gray ones.

"It's me."

His smile widened, his dull eyes almost disappearing beneath his smile.

"Have you come for the emergency conference?" He asked.

You frowned, slowly stepping back, causing his hands to fall from your arms.

"No. I just wanted to make sure everything was okay. I don't exactly want to talk about assassination."

The high priest tilted his head, his brows furrowing.

"But you saved the king's life." He stated. "You should go in there and claim a reward."

You shook your head, chuckling under your breath.

"I don't want anything. Anyone would have done the same thing. I'm just happy I noticed something was off before it was too late."

Jimin sighed.

"I'm afraid that no one else would have saved his life, even if they had noticed it."

You tilted your head.

"What do you mean? Of course they would. He's the king."

He shook his head, his hands reaching out to you.

"He has not been the wisest or the kindest ruler. The only reason no one has made an attempt before today is because they fear what would happen to the kingdom with no heir to the throne. If anyone else had seen the poison, they would have said nothing."

You nodded slowly, eyes falling to the ground.

" That's terrible."

Jimin nodded, his eyes moving in front of him as he grabbed your hand.

"But you did. And because of that, the king may allow you to go free."

You raised your eyebrows.

"B-But I haven't preformed a miracle yet."

Jimin nodded.

"I know, but you saved his life. He may take favor upon you and forget about the bet."

You smiled to yourself.

"Do you really think he would do that?"

Jimin nodded.

"Come. We shall find out."

The high priest pulled you into the throne room once again. The officials and advisers were still bickering with each other, their discussions becoming heated and angry.

You swallowed hard as their hard gazes fell to you.

Taehyung straightened himself in his throne, crossing his legs as he eyed your hand in Jimin's.

"What is the meaning of this priest?" One of the advisers spat. "Women are not allowed amungst the Pharaoh's council."

Taehyung remained silent as he stared at you, your nervous deposition striking him with curiosity.

"I have come to plead with his majesty." Jimin announced.

The young Pharaoh moved his kohl-stained eyes to the chestnut haired man, his eyebrows raising in interest.

"We are currently trying to investigate who tried to kill me." He stated. "You plea shall have to wait for another day."

The high priest shook his head.

"The plea is not for me, my king. But for the young goddess."

You gulped as Taehyung's eyes moved to yours.

"The goddess?" He inquired. "What does she have need of?"

Jimin squeezed your hand in reassurance before speaking.

"The bet that was placed between your majesty and I, she wishes for it to be ended."

The Pharaoh scoffed.

"Ended?" He started. "The wager we had is binding, I do not go back on the deals I make."

The chestnut-haired man frowned.

"I realize that. And under normal circumstances I would not ask for such a giant favor. However, this woman has saved your life this night. Would it be such a burden for his majesty to relieve her of this wager?"

Taehyung sent a glare to the man.

"I have no interest in forfeiting this bargain. Just because the woman noticed an odd colored wine does not mean I am obliged to take back a wager that you and I made, priest. Tomorrow is her last day to prove herself to me. And if she does not, when the noon sun hits the Nile, she will belong to me, and you will be put to death."

Taehyung leaned back in his chair before speaking again.

"Just like we agreed."

Hoseok breathed heavily as he trudged through the dark, damp, underground corridor, his chest heaving in anxiety as he rushed to meet his consort.

He ran a hand through his dirty blond locks, making his hair even more messy than before.

He was stressed out, things had certainly not gone according to plan, and that was a very, very bad thing.

He let out a heavy sigh as he rounded the corner, his skin crawling from the dingy, blackness of the tunnel he walked in.

A small light waited for him at the end of the seemingly never-ending tunnel.

He huffed out as he entered the small cavern, his eyes searching desperately for the mysterious man he had come to know.

"You seem to be tense, stargazer." His voice rang out from behind a shelf of books as he entered the astronomers line of vision.

Hoseok rushed over to him.

"It went wrong." He stated. "He didn't drink the wine."

The man's eyes widened at Hoseok's words, his hands running across his bald, tattooed head.

"What do you mean he didn't drink it!?"He yelled. "Everything was set up so perfectly! What happened?!"

Hoseok sighed.

"The young goddess, Y/n, she saw the poison and stopped the Pharaoh from drinking it."

The man growled in frustration, slamming his hands down on a wooden table in front of him.

"The goddess is very intelligent, killing the Pharaoh may prove to be harder than I had first anticipated."

Hoseok rubbed his face in stress.

"I am beginning to have doubt about this." He stated. "I only wish for a better future for my people. Y/n almost drank the poison. I do not wish for her to be harmed in any way."

The bald man glared at Hoseok.

"Do not be a fool, stargazer." He spat. "We are bettering this world, by taking that monster off the throne, we are making way for a new ruler."

Hoseok nodded.

"I understand that, but the y/n almost died today, if she-"

He man interrupted him.

"Do not fear for her. Her life is needed for this country to prosper. No harm will come to her. Just be more careful how you go about killing him."

The astronomer nodded.

"And after all of this is finished, a better ruler shall sit on the throne."

The bald man smiled evilly, amused by Hoseok's lack of knowledge for his plot.

"Yes. The most powerful ruler Egypt will ever know."
