Chapter 11: Disease
"Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease."
-Yiddish Proverb
You huffed out in annoyance as you bent your body to pick up yet another fallen scroll, your hands grabbing the paper and placing it back in your arms along with the others.
Jimin has asked you to deliver the weekly reports back to Hoseok. He said that he had finished looking over them and they needed to be delivered the the astronomer right away to be stored. You didn't mind doing it, after all you imagined that it was pretty hard for Jimin to get around without his sight.
The only thing that annoyed you was how many scrolls he expected you to carry all by yourself.
You had dropped one of those things at least ten times, they were constantly rolling out of your arms and dropping onto the floor. You wanted nothing more than to pile them all up and set them on fire.
You sighed, trying to adjust your head so you could see over the never ending mountain of paper in your arms. Your blue eyes were so focused on the path in front of you that you didn't even notice three of the Pharaoh's concubines walking past you.
One of them let out a quiet chuckle at your struggle, sticking her foot out in the middle of your way.
You tripped.
All of the papers you had worked so hard to gather were sent flying from your arms as your body met the limestone floor harshly. Your body instinctively angled itself, so no damage would be done to your face, causing you to land on your side, your bare shoulder dragging across the rough surface harshly.
You groaned out in pain, rolling over to lay on your back, blood spilling out of the wound on your shoulder.
One of the women snorted at your pain, leaning over and smiling down at you evilly.
"Watch where you walk, temptress."
You glared at her, slowly standing to your feet, your left hand moving to cover your bloody shoulder.
"You tripped me." You stated.
She smiled.
"You cannot prove that."
Your blue eyes shot daggers at her as you took a small step forward.
"What's your problem?" You asked. "You don't even know me."
She frowned, her smile fading completely.
"Everyone is so taken with you. They think you are truly a goddess, but I know better. You can pretend to be divine all you wish, but at the end of the day, you are nothing but a common whore, just like us. The Pharaoh may favor you now, but all of us have been in the position you are in, and it doesn't last long. He will loose interest in you soon enough."
You rolled your eyes, annoyance written all over your face.
"I don't care what the Pharaoh thinks of me. That man is a child, and everything he does is based off of his own selfish whims. You don't have to worry about me stealing his attention, because I would rather die than be like any of you."
Her eyes widened at your insult, her hand raising as she was getting ready to send a blow to you.
"How dare you! You little-"
"What do you think you're doing?"
The woman's eyes widened at the deep voice, her hand lowering slowly as her gaze moved over to the angry Pharaoh.
Taehyung stood with his arms crossed over his chest, his eye brows raised in a challenging manner, just waiting for her to hit you.
"M-My lord, Pharaoh," The woman stuttered out.
Your eyebrows raised, your blue eyes moving to look at the sandy blond man.
"Get out."
The woman's eyes widened even wider, her heart thumping in dread as she stared incredulously at him, her mouth dropping open.
"Y-You don't mean that. I've been here longer than her! I am far more loyal than-"
"I will not argue this matter with you," Taehyung interrupted rudely, his eyes hardening on her. "Leave. Now."
Her mouth hung open in shock, the other girls around her quickly scurrying off before they too were scolded.
The girl slowly turned around her gaze hardening as she glanced at you. She didn't speak, but you could see her hatred for you It was plainly written all over her face.
You didn't even acknowledge Taehyung's presence. You didn't want to see him. You didn't want to talk to him. You wanted nothing to do with him at that moment. Not after everything he had done.
Taehyung frowned deeply at your silence, his kohl lined eyes saddening as he watched you pick up the fallen scrolls, blood dripping from your shoulder onto the floor beneath you.
He quickly moved to help you, kneeling down beside of you and gently placing his hand on your back.
"You don't need to do this" He started. "You are injured."
You jerked your body away from him, hating his touch as you continued to pick up the fallen scrolls.
"Go away. I don't want to talk to you."
A pang of hurt shot through his chest at your cold tone. He knew that you weren't exactly his biggest fan, but at least you could stand to be around him. Now you didn't even want his help, even when you were clearly in pain.
"y/n, please" He sighed out. "I know we have our differences but-"
"Differences?!" You repeated angrily. "You forced me to watch as you whipped my friend! You are always on my back about speaking to anyone other than you! You even took away my right to have my own bedroom! Those are not just "differences", Taehyung."
His eyes widened at the use of his name, his heart pounding against his chest as he struggled to compose himself.
"I know you hate me, but I only did what I thought was best for you."
You scoffed, picking up another scroll and putting it in your arms.
"I'm done arguing with you about things. I'm tired of constantly trying to get through your thick skull. I will follow your stupid rules, and in return you stay out of my life. Stop talking to me, stop inviting me to eat with you, stop bringing me in your throne room. I'm done."
The young Pharaoh gulped, trying to swallow down his hurt at your cruel words, his fist clenching in anger and frustration, not with you, but with himself. Whipping Yoongi was a mistake. He let his jealousy get the better of him, he knew you wouldn't be happy about it, but in the moment, he didn't really care. His only focus was getting back at you for making him feel inferior to his general.
The sandy blond man frowned deeply, his head hanging low.
Maybe he couldn't find the right words, or maybe he was just scared of what you would say, but for whatever reason, Taehyung found himself speechless in that moment. He couldn't bring himself to apologize, but he wasn't going to make any statement that would make you angry either. Its like all of his words were trapped in his own mind.
You finished picking up the scrolls, pulling yourself to stand up, blood still dripping from your shoulder, as you began to walk away from him.
The Pharaoh moved swiftly, his body reacting before his mind could.
His arms wrapped around your waist from behind, bumping your body and causing you to drop the scrolls again.
Your blue eyes widened at his sudden touch, your body trying to pull away from him as he rested his head against your clean shoulder.
"Taehyung. Let-"
"I am sorry."
Your blue eyes widened at his soft spoken tone, your heart pounding in your chest as you processed his words. His arms held you tighter, his sandy hair tickling your cheek as the silk of his robes gently brushed your lower back.
"You are right." He stated. "I am a fool. I get jealous easily, I am constantly infuriated by the smallest things, I usually do not care for other's well being, I am selfish and I am a child."
You remained stiff, listening to his soft spoken words as he pulled your back to meet the front of his body, seeking your warmth.
"But I want to change," He stated. "I don't want to be like this anymore. I want to be better. I-I need to be better.....for you."
You couldn't listen to this anymore. Your body was screaming at you to get away from the man that had hurt you. Your mind was swimming with numerous thoughts, pros an cons of his sudden need to change.
You forced him to release you, shoving past his hold, and turning to face him with wide eyes.
Taehyung stared at you sadly, his now empty arms falling to his side as his bottom lip quivered with unshed tears.
"Please," He begged. "Make me better."
Your heart skipped a beat at his plea, for a single moment you fooled yourself into thinking that maybe, just maybe, he had actually meant what he said.
"I'm sorry Taehyung." You breathed. "But you are the only one who can change you. I can't help you."
You didn't stay around to hear his response, turning on your heel and quickly running off in the opposite direction, leaving the scrolls lying on the floor.
Taehyung watched you leave with teary eyes, his heart aching. You literally ran away from him. You were the only person he gave a second thought to and now you were running away.
Just like everyone else.
But he wasn't going to let you leave like the others.
He was going to fight.
He was going to change.

"I'm afraid it is not good news."
Jimin slowly set up on the medical bed, his hand reaching for his silk robes blindly.
"I am dying, I'm sure it can be no worse than this."
The physician frowned deeply, his hand rubbing down his face.
"The disease is more advanced than we had first believed." He stated. "What we thought would be months, has now become days."
The high priest wished he were shocked, but in reality he had already known that this was going to happen, he could feel himself growing weaker by the day, some days were so bad that he could barely even walk.
"How long?" He asked.
The physician sighed.
"Judging by what you've told me, I would give you about four days.... at most."
Jimin rubbed his face in stress as he nodded his head to the physician.
"Thank you."
With those words, the blind man removed himself from the bed and grabbed his robes, wrapping them around his body.
"I'm sorry."
Jimin shook his head.
"Don't be." He started. "We all knew the day would come when this disease would take me,
the day when I would die."
