Naiza laces her fingers with Kabir's, drawing him closer to her. They walk, hand in hand as the frostly wind chills them. The only few sources of warmth they had was their kisses and their thick coats. Both of them had shrugged them off at the cafe due to the heaters on full blast to only shrug them back on as soon as they felt the heavy gusts of winds.
Their footsteps leave marks in the snow, side by side. Nazia wanted to walk, convinced that it wouldn't be late when they came back home. Instead, night came early. It was only six pm when the sky turned black and filled itself with stars.
Little clouds of fog flow out of her mouth as she leans her head on Kabir's shoulder. Her hair flows behind her head, seeming like a curtain of black ink as it spills behind Kabir's shoulder and the scar on his neck. "Why is it so ridiculously cold?" she questions, sighing with the words. Kabir shrugs as she moves as close as she can.
That's when she spots him, amonsgt all the walkers on the street. Her eyes narrow onto him and she takes a sharp inhale of breath. Kabir raises an eyebrow, feeling her grip tighten on his hand. He looks at her, watching all the blood run out of her face and then trailed her eyes with his own.
His gaze falls upon a man. He's around Kabir's height and like Kabir, he wears a thick black coat. His face covered by a beanie that leans too close to his face, covering his eyebrows. However, that doesn't stop Kabir from realizing that whoever this man is, he knows Nazia very well. The man's eyes widen as soon as they see Nazia and his lips break out into a huge smile.
"Nazia?"
Nazia tugs on Kabir's hand, desperate to go home. Her eyes glance at the man, taking in his rich brown eyes before she casts a look at the street sign. Autumn.
A wave of memory overcomes her and she finds her taking a step back. Laughter. Her laughter and his, mixed all together in their apartment. She remembers walking hand in hand on this very street with him, kissing him with a cherry flavored lips and their small apartment tucked away on this street.
Her throat is dry despite the can of coke she drunk a few minutes ago. How is he here? How is he back - wasn't he meant to be in France with some other woman?
Her heart drops as he walks closer to them. On his face, there's a huge grin - like if the last few years never happened and he'll sweep her in a hug anytime soon. Instead, Nazia takes anothdr step back and Kabir takes one foward.
Kabir glances at Nazia, watching her with a frown. Her eyes are glazed with shock and she can't seem to handle it. He puts the clues together, realizing that the man can only be him. Abeer.
Her ex. The one who broke her trust in people for months, that took away her smile until she realized that she was better off without such a poison. "What are you doing here?" he comments, looking Abeer up and down.
The action was pointless; Abeer simply carried on smiling. His lips only falter for a moment and it's only so he can part his lips. "Nazia," he calls her name, sending chills down her back.
Her name itself sounds so different on his lips. It's not the same as Kabir. Kabir's lips made her happy, it brings so many happy moments. On his lips however, her name sounded like every moment of her life that she's regretted.
"Stay away from her," Kabir says, his voice more aggressive now. His hands slip away from Nazia who's too ridden with shock to comment. Abeer ignores him again, taking another step too close to Nazia. This time Kabir grabs Abeer's collar.
"Didn't you hear what I said?" Kabir asks, exaggerating the syllable of each word. Abeer simply laughs at Kabir, causing Kabir to push Abeer away. Abeer stumbles for a moment but catches his step and carries on laughing.
"Let me talk to her," Abeer says, his eyes turning into steel as they look at Kabir. His dark brown eyes looked cruel, ruthless to the point where Kabir takes a step back. He doesn't know why but the way he spoke; icy cold and steel made him afraid for a moment.
"Can we talk in private?" he questions, his eyes only watching Nazia. Before Kabir gets to growl at him again, Abeer steps towards her. She grabs the edges of her coat, wrapping them around her body as tightly as she can. "I really missed you."
"You can say it in front of Kabir as well," Nazia replies, her eyes meeting Abeer who sulkingly nods. It's only been a few minutes since he's met Kabir and already, Kabir is getting on Abeer's nerves.
"I still love you. We can make us work. I know I made so many mistakes and it took me years to understand how damaging they were but I really am sorry. I miss you Nazia," he says, his brown eyes warming up and his voice lowering as he says his last sentence.
At first, Nazia looks at him with widen eyes. She had longed to hear those words for years but now, they made no impact on her. No butterflies arose in her stomach like it does for Kabir, there was no emotion whatsoever that came for him except for hatred.
Why did he leave her if he loved her?
"You can't just waltz back in my life, Abeer," she tells him, her voice soft. Nazia takes a look at Kabir, her hand tugging his tp indicate she wants to leave. Abeer watches her action and his heart drops.
"What we had was love. You can't deny it - "
"It wasn't ever love for you. It was a game, a time pass. Goodbye Abeer," she replies, her throat tightening. This time, her words impact Abeer. Abeer looks at her, his eyes filling themselves with sadness. As quickly as his sadness comes, his anger comes. The eyes fill themselves with spark of anger which Nazia ignores along with him.
The couple turns around, Kabir sparing a glance at Abeer. She made no movements to look back, instead she places her head on Kabir's shoulder.
A few minutes later, Abeer finally looks up. He stood at that spot for moments, hearing the crunches of the snow as his lover abandoned him. When he turns, nothing remains of her but her footsteps alongside an unrecognizable man's one.
Sorrow fills him and for a moment, he feels like breaking. To fall onto the ground and sob until all the grief is gone. It wasn't ever meant to be like this. She was meant to accept him completely, to love him once again like she once did.
But instead, anger takes its place. How dare she? He was ready to offer his world once again and she rejected him. For what? That man? Can he even offer more than what Abeer has to offer? How dare he take his place? Each one of them was going to pay. Nazia will soon realize her mistake, she'll come back running and kiss him like she used to.
He missed her with everything he had. Her lips, her kisses, her laughter and her sarcasm. Everything was so beautiful about her and there was always something new to love about her. She was perfect for him and there's no other substitute he'll take other than the raven headed beauty.
Everything else tastes bitter to her sugar. To her smile. To her lips. All he ever craves his her and the taste of her perfume. So what it took him years to realize that he loved her? All that mattered was that he wants her and Abeer Malhorta always gets what he wants.

A FEW HOURS LATER, Nazia awakens. Her eyes automatically search for Kabir, who lies beside her. His naked chest rises up and down and his breathes are the only sound Nazia can hear beside her thoughts.
She brushes his messy hair from his forehead and gently kisses the smooth skin. Kabir makes no movement to awaken from his slumber so Nazia carefully climbs out of the bed, ensuring her fiancé wouldn't awaken.
The moon shines in their room, peeking out of the few gaps between the curtain and window. Nazia slips into Kabir's shirt, the fabric of it easily reaching her thighs.
Nazia walks on the wooden floor, her feet making little noise. It's not like it'll impact Kabir much, he was always soundly asleep within moments and only woke up when sunlight peeked through the windows. She opens the curtains towards the terrace, her eyes taking in the city completely.
After what seemed like minutes to her, Nazia hears a few footsteps. She raises an eyebrow, turning around to spot her fiance shivering in a black benan (singlet) and boxers. Beside him, he drags a blanket which he quickly pull over his shoulders.
Nazia frowns at him and in return, Kabir envelops her as well in the blue blanket. The warmth creeps into her body and Kabir wraps an arm around her as well. "Why are you so cold?" he comments, his hands wrapping around her chilling arm.
Nazia leans back onto his arms, feeling the safety of Kabir. "Buy thicker shirts," she replies, her eyes firmly on the shape of the city. Kabir just laughs at her comment and looks up towards where her gaze is.
It's beautiful. The city is on rush mode and lights are everywhere. The moonlight, stars, cars and streetlight shine upon people. Although it was beautiful, it didn't explain why Nazia has been standing here for the last few minutes without a trace of emotions.
Kabir places a kiss on her forehead and Nazia looks at him. This time, instead of turning her gaze away, she burries her face in his chest. The scent of peppermint still remains on his skin for some strange reason and she ignores it. The familiarity is better than the curiosity of it.
"How can he just walk back into my life like that? And pretend everything is okay?" she asks. Kabir searches for a hint of sadness on her face but instead, he comes up blank. There's no emotions on her face but pity.
"I feel bad for him. He can't seem to understand the difference between love, lust and my hatred for him," she carries on, her eyes moving back to the city. "I just want to know why he thought it was okay to act like that. He should have known that I've moved on, that I've found someone who actually loves me as much as I love them back."
Kabir absently nods to it all, his lips moving into a smile when she hints towards his name. His bones feel like they're about to collapse with the amount of tiredness he carries. "Nazia," he says, loosening his hug on her slightly. "You do love me . . . Right?"
Nazia turns around, facing Kabir. Her eyes have widen, watching him with a look of shock. Kabir blankly watches her back and she refuses to drop her gaze. "How can you doubt me?" she questions, raising an eyebrow at him. Her voice is steel like compared to his drowsy voice.
She takes a step closer, closing the space between them as she wraps her arms around him. Her fingers brush the nape of his neck, lingering on the scar on the base of his neck. They move lower, gently touching the paper cut like scars. He returns the gesture, hugging her back and places a soft kiss on her forehead. "I love you, Kabir. I've loved you more than I've ever loved him and I always will."
Kabir simply hugs her tighter.
