If you took a glance at the Pokéfics on Wattpad, you would think there are only 20 Pokémon in the world instead of 800+.

Eeveelutions. Zorua. Vulpix and Ninetales. Lucario. Pikachu and zir clones. Hydreigon. The Ralts line. Absol. All the starters. Every Pokémon I just listed dominate the Pokéfic scene. The majority of fanfictions have at least one of these guys somewhere running around somewhere doing something.

Personally, I have grown sick and tired of reading fics about these select few. There are so many amazing Pokémon with unique lore and abilities that people ignore. All you have to do is browse through PokéDex entries or watch episodes of the anime to see why uncommon Pokémon might be a better fit for your fic than one of the aforementioned.

To name just a few interesting Pokémon:

Porygon-Z are given software updates to them to make them "better"

Aegislash have spectral powers that allow them to manipulate and control Pokémon

Turtonator have explosive dung

Also, there are more Legendary and Mythical Pokémon besides Mew, Mewtwo, Giratina, Jirachi, and Arceus. Instead of trying to have your protagonist save the cosmos in a do-or-die situation against the PokéWorld's big bosses, try exploring separate themes with the other Legendaries.

Throwing a few ideas out there:

The Lake Trio (Mesprit, Uxie, Azelf) focus on key aspects of humanity—emotion, knowledge, willpower

The Regis (Regigigas, Regice, Regirock, Registeel) built and shaped the world

Hoopa can teleport through time and space with zir magical rings

All you have to do is browse through PokéDex entries, watch episodes of the anime, or see some movies to understand why these less used Pokémon are absolute delights.

If you are still struggling to find unique Pokémon for your fic, check out in . This site randomly generates six Pokémon for you, and there are several options you can choose from to change what appears. For example, you can choose what Type you need or what region zie needs to be from.

Now am I saying every fanfiction that uses these common Pokémon are bad? Of course not! There's a reason people go back to these ol' faithfuls.

But do I wish the spotlight could be shared with the less popular Pocket Monsters? Yes, yes I do.
