Chapter 8: Are All Boys This Confusing?
"Wow someone's tired" I plopped down next to Hannah in the conference room where all the interns were gathering as she let out a huge yawn.
"I wish I could say I had a date or was being productive last night, but in reality I was watching Netflix until 2 am" Hannah confessed.
"I had to third wheel with my best friend and her boyfriend. They were oozing love all over the place. It's like someone kept punching me saying 'you're single and lonely' all night long" I groaned.
"That's the worst. I mean meeting the best friend's boyfriend is important and all, but no one said it was fun" Hannah patted my back reassuringly as more interns filed into the room.
"You know what the worst part is? They're really happy and it's the whole 'better together than they would be apart'. I mean if they weren't so dang happy I could stay strong on the whole 'single and proud of it', but now a little part of me wants what they have, and I can't shut her up" I admitted.
"Hola amigas. What are you two gossiping about this morning" Scott, who was eating Froot Loops despite the fact that he was 21 years old, sat down next to me.
"Kayla's jealous of how happy and in looovvveee her friend is. Gosh darn it's such a bummer we don't know any single guys who are interested in Kayla" Hannah attempted to say nonchalantly before making up some excuse about having to find a Christmas card in the gift shop even though it was the middle of July.
Great now Scott was going to think I liked him and Hannah was hinting at him to ask me out, even though she was.
"So you're the jealous type huh?" Scott raised his eyebrows in question before offering me some of his Froot Loops.
"What? No. Hannah's crazy you can't believe a word she says. I think she's onto something buying Christmas cards early. I'm sure she's getting a huge discount. I should probably go to the gift shop and take advantage of that. Gotta go bye" I practically ran out of the room. Subtle Kayla, real subtle. Why am I going to med school when I should clearly be pursuing my acting career?
I was chatting with an eight year old boy with Epilepsy while updating his chart when I heard obnoxious laughter from the hallway.
Scott was looking right at me, but as soon as I turned around he looked at a nurse next to him and started laughing as if she said the funniest thing in the world. Clearly something was up because he kept stealing glances at me as he flirted with her.
"So Mikey when was your last seizure?" I tried to ignore what was going on in the hallway.
"This morning at six. It wasn't as bad as some of the other ones though" Mikey was running his trucks and toys up and down rails on his hospital bed.
"Mikey my man how's the girlfriend?" Scott came in and did some handshake with Mikey they came up with.
"She's good" Mikey seemed to be choosing his words carefully.
"She's probably insanely jealous that you have such a beautiful doctor" Scott was even worse of an actor than I was. He winked at Mikey letting me know they must've rehearsed this whole thing earlier that morning.
"She's definitely really jealous, but you know what makes her feel better? Going on a date with the guy she's crazy jealous about" Mikey was holding back a laugh.
"You're eight! Do you even go on dates at your age?" I threw my hands up in the air in an attempt to get them to stop this whole charade.
"Mikey is a total stud of course he goes on dates. Now back to your jealousy issues... I mean Mikey's girlfriend's jealousy issues" Scott stuttered as he tried to recover from his slip.
"Oh give it up Scott she busted us. Just ask her out already" Mikey threw his partner in crime under the bus.
"Where's the fun in that? I'll do it when she least expects it. See you later Kayla. Thanks for the help Mikey" Scott did their handshake again before walking out as if none of that weirdness ever happened.
"What the heck is wrong with him?" I asked Mikey, still dumbfounded.
"He's into you. Just go for it. Jeez adults are so complicated" Mikey grinned before returning to his trucks.
I still had a hard time thinking of myself as an adult.
I spent the rest of the day watching out for Scott. Every time we crossed paths I expected him to ask me out, but he never did.
Finally at the end of the day I was so anxious that when we ended up walking out to the parking lot at the same time I kind of exploded.
"You do realize you are unbelievably confusing don't you?" I blurted out.
"Me? Confusing? In what way?" Scott grinned sheepishly.
"Are you going to ask me out or was that whole charade with Mikey a joke?" I asked bluntly.
"Kayla I'd like to take you to dinner tomorrow night, what do you say? And by the way if you say no at this point that would just be cruel" Scott had his hands casually in his pockets and seemed perfectly relaxed with this whole conversation, whereas my stomach was full of obnoxious butterflies.
"I'm going to have to think about that one" I said with a straight face before walking past him towards my car.
"Seriously? I put a twelve year old epileptic patient through rehearsals in an attempt to seem nonchalant, and you have to think about it?" Scott moved to stand in front of my door so I couldn't open it.
"Yes"
"I mean come on I don't mean to sound cocky, but at this point I thought you would at least agree to one date. I mean come on give me a shot" Scott continued to rant. "Wait a minute did you just say yes?" Scott paused.
"Yes I said yes" I was enjoying this way too much.
"Thank goodness. I'll pick you up at seven tomorrow night?" Scott moved away from my door and slowly walked backwards toward his own car with a goofy smile on his face.
"See you then" I waved goodbye before pulling out of the parking lot with a goofy smile of my own.

"Billy if you throw the ball at Tony one more time you will sit out for the rest of the day. Are we clear?" I shouted across the court at the blonde haired child. I was at my wit's end with that kid. He'd hit almost every kid on his team with a ball at some point that day.
Two seconds later the ball came flying towards my head.
"Billy!" I shouted after I ducked, successfully avoiding getting hit in the face.
"Sorry Ms. Kayla" Billy shouted back without sounding the slightest bit guilty.
"Is he still giving you trouble?" a voice behind me asked. I rolled my eyes and grimaced before turning around to face Blake.
"I have a feeling your little brother doesn't really understand authority" I started to gather all the volleyballs and load them into a bag. Sadly Blake followed me.
"That reminds me, go on a date with me" Blake flashed me a cocky smile.
"What about your brother's misbehavior and authority issues reminded you that you should ask me out, again?" I seriously did not understand how Blake's brain worked.
"Just go out with me" Blake tucked a piece of hair behind my ear.
"Blake I think it'd be best for everybody if you backed up and went home" Jake was suddenly in between Blake and I with a hand on Blake's chest slowly pushing him back.
"I think you should mind your own business" Blake tried to move around Jake, but Jake just side stepped to block his path.
"Jake I know that you're trying to help, but I can handle this on my own. Blake I am not going out with you because I already have a date tonight, but even if I didn't you and I are never going to happen because we aren't compatible and I've already said no several times" I tried to explain, but it was hard because Jake's shoulder was blocking Blake's face from my view.
"Fine your loss" Blake shrugged and headed over to the court to find his brother.
"Well that was weird, but telling him you had a date tonight was a good idea. At least he finally left you alone" Jake rocked back and forth on his heels.
"I actually have a date tonight though. With another intern in the same program as me at the hospital" I couldn't get over how awkward this whole conversation was.
"Oh well um have fun. I have to go make sure my kids find their parents. I'll see you around" Jake practically ran away from me. Nice to know we're making progress. Not.
"Paige I need your help. I have no idea what to wear on my date with Scott" I plopped down next to Paige on one of the benches.
"Where is he taking you?" Paige stole my water bottle. North Carolina summers were normally hot, but the humidity this year was worse than normal.
"CPK, he's picking me up at seven" I was starting to get nervous even though the date was hours away.
"Go with your dark jeans and your purple flowy top" Paige suggested. I nodded out of habit because I was too focused on Jake who was flirting with one of the other coaches named Mary over Paige's shoulder.
I shook off that small twinge of jealousy. I had a date to get ready for.
So Scott is the lucky guy. Are you all happy with this? Any guesses on how the date will go?
