Chapter 16: Double Dates
I was dancing around my room to my Beyoncé playlist when I caught sight of my clock.
Shoot.
I was meeting Paige for lunch in twenty minutes and I still wasn't ready yet. I stopped using my curling iron as a microphone and switched to using it for its original purpose.
I found my favorite dark wash skinny jeans, and paired them with a white flowy tank and my tan wedges. Some gold jewelry completed the look and I was grabbing my purse and running out the door.
"I've never been here before. Any recommendations?" I was trying to make a decision, but there were so many choices on the menu I was having a hard time narrowing it down to even a handful. We were trying some new organic healthy restaurant in town Paige recommended.
"I love the kale salad, I normally add chicken, but I'm thinking about doing salmon this time" Paige and I loved most of the same foods so we tended to order two different dishes and then share. It was a great arrangement.
"So what are we doing tonight?" I asked after we ordered.
"Kayla Ryans doesn't have a plan? Well there's a first" Paige grinned. She, Stephen, Scott, and I were going on a double date tonight, but that was about all we had figured out so far.
"Oh zip it and help me brainstorm" I threw my straw wrapper at her and it got stuck in her hair. She didn't notice, but being the evil best friend I am I didn't tell her about it. Holding back my laughter wasn't easy.
"Why don't we go surfing? Didn't you and Jake go on a surf date one time and had a blast? We haven't gone in forever" Paige suggested.
"That would be fun, but I don't think Scott would be into surfing. He's not really the outdoorsy type" I shrugged.
"Alright so no surfing, and I guess boating is out then too" Paige's nose was scrunched up and her mouth kept twitching from side to side. Paige's intense thinking face always made me laugh.
"What about bowling? Four is a good number for bowling" I suggested right as our food came out.
"Aren't we a little old for bowling?" Paige raised her eyebrows in question.
"Come on Paige embrace your inner kid. It'll be fun" I couldn't get over how good my salad was. I mean not as delicious as mac & cheese obviously, but pretty darn close for rabbit food.
"Alright we'll go bowling" Paige relented. We spent the rest of lunch talking about where Stephen took Paige for their 18 month anniversary. She was head over heels in love with him and even I, the relationship cynic, couldn't help but get all goo goo eyed about it.
We split the check and were about to head out when Paige bumped into someone from school.
They talked briefly about their classes for senior year and how the football team was looking before saying goodbye.
"Is it just me or was he staring at me kind of weirdly the whole time?" Paige asked, "I mean he has to know I'm seeing Stephen"
"Paige, you know I think you're gorgeous, but I don't think that's what he was staring at" I tried to stifle a laugh that was trying to bust out.
"Then what was it" Paige's look of confusion wasn't helping me control myself.
"Don't be mad, but that straw wrapper I threw at you earlier has been stuck in your hair this whole time" I attempted to look sorry, but it was a weak attempt.
"You let me sit all through lunch and talk to Mark for a solid five minutes with a straw wrapper in my hair?" Paige clarified.
"Yes, yes I did"
"Oh you are so dead" Paige started chasing me down the street and let me tell you running in wedges isn't just hard, it's practically impossible.
I was recounting the near death experience to Scott later that night on our way to the bowling alley.
"You do realize you two are crazy right?" Scott looked over at me out of the corner of his eye.
"More like certifiably insane, but I wouldn't want to be crazy with anyone but Paige. She's my person" a smile spread over my face at the thought.
"You've been watching too much Grey's Anatomy" Scott laughed and shook his head.
"Paige and I have been watching it for years. Don't make fun of Grey's" I shoved him lightly.
"Don't assault the driver" Scott gasped at me, but I could see the humor in his eyes.
"Oh please, that was hardly assault" I rolled my eyes at him. He responded by placing his hand on my thigh and leaning over to kiss me on the cheek. Sitting there in the car with him like that was, oh what was the word I was looking for? Comfortable. Being with Scott was comfortable. Before I had time to contemplate how I felt about that we were at the bowling alley and the golden couple was walking towards us.
"Scott this is Stephen, and you've already met Paige briefly haven't you?" I asked as we approached them.
"Yes I have, and I've heard so many stories I feel like I've known you for years. Nice to meet you Stephen" Scott and Stephen shook hands before we all headed inside.
We reserved a lane and ordered a couple pizzas before we got to business. Bowling was serious especially when Paige and I were around.
"Oh please you bowl like a five year old" Paige shouted at me. We had only been bowling for half an hour at this point, but this wasn't our first shouting match.
"Babe there are little kids around. Maybe reel the trash talk in a bit" Stephen wrapped his arms around Paige's waist and whispered in her ear.
"If anyone besides you said that I'd kick their ass, but somehow you make it cute" she gave him a goofy grin before kissing him on the cheek. Seeing my best friend so happy made me happy.
We decided to play teams and mix up the couples. Stephen and I vs Scott and Paige.
By the fifth frame we were tied and Stephen decided to mix things up a bit.
"Alright this round everyone has to bowl granny style" he called out before instantly sending his ball into the gutter.
"I would like a new partner" I begged.
"Hey traitor" Stephen had a mock look of hurt on his face.
"Can you blame me? You've gotten four gutter balls in a row" I teased him
"Alright this time everyone has to bowl with their eyes closed" Scott suggested.
Paige got a strike, Scott bowled an eight, I got a six, and of course Stephen sent another ball straight into the gutter.
"Stephen have you never bowled before?" I tried not to laugh as he hung his head in shame.
"Actually I was on the bowling team in middle school, but I dropped it in high school to play baseball. I think I've lost my touch" he looked like a little kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
"I'd say so. Paige you do realize you're dating a guy with the bowling capabilities of a toddler right?" I ruffled Stephen's hair.
"Don't worry sweetheart I love you despite your embarrassing bowling skills" Paige ruffled his hair again. He started mumbling about how girls hated when their hair was messed up, but they had no problem messing up a guy's. Scott sent him a look of sympathy.
After two games of bowling we finished up our pizza and headed to return our shoes.
"Well would you look at that? Looks like Scott and I won" Paige stuck her tongue out at me.
"Only because my partner happens to be the worst bowler on the face of the planet" I shoved Stephen playfully.
"As long as I don't lose my best friend approval I'm perfectly fine with you insulting my bowling skills for the rest of eternity" Stephen was talking to me, but his eyes were on Paige.
That was a look I rarely saw with couples these days. He had love written all over his face. We could walk past a group of super models right now and I would bet my college savings Stephen's eyes would never leave Paige's face.
He was in love with her. Falling hard, heart on his sleeve, undeniably in love with her.
The way he looked at her said it all.
I looked over at Scott and wondered if he ever looked at me that way, but for some reason deep down I knew it was unlikely.
Gosh I love Paige and Stephen <3
Who else has an unhealthy obsession with Grey's Anatomy?
This was more of a fun chapter so let me know what you think of Stephen & Paige and Scott & Kayla! And don't forget to vote!
