Chapter Fourteen - "Only If The Trophy Is You."

Avery's P.O.V

"Where is your father?" My mom asks, walking into my room. I pause my music and shrug.

"I have no idea." I say and my mom nods before walking back out of my room. I place the earphone back in my ear and continue to message Claire.

Claire-Bear: Wait, so your telling me that Katie touched River?

Me: Yes and let me just say, I have never been so angry in my entire life.

Claire-Bear: Oh my god, if Katie had touched my daughter I would kill her on the spot.

Me: I know and I would've done that but you know, I didn't want River and everyone else to see such a gruesome sight.

Claire-Bear: Fuck them! You should've ripped her head off her shoulders!

"Avery! Come down here!" I hear my mom yell and I sigh, quickly typing my reply.

Me: Well that was the plan. Anyway, I have to go.

I put my phone on my bed and take my earphones out of my ears, walking out of my room and down the stairs. I notice that my mom is at the door, talking to a woman around her age with a baby on her hip and a boy around my age behind her. I let out a sigh and walk down the stairs.

I'm not in the mood to talk with strangers.

"Avery, say hello to our new neighbors!" My mom says cheerily and I wave at them.

"Good morning." I say and the woman smiles at me.

"Hello, I'm Julia. This is Casey and that over there is Ryan." Julia says, pointing to the baby on her hip and the boy behind her. I wave at Ryan who is staring at me with a small smile.

"Avery, I have offered for Julia and her family to come over for dinner so go show Ryan around." My mom says and I nod, turning around and walking into the living room.

"This is obviously the living room, over there is the kitchen and up there is the bathroom and bedrooms. Down the hallway over there is the backyard." I say, pointing to the directions of the places. Ryan nods and looks around the house.

As he is doing this, I can't help but take a good look at Ryan. He has brown hair and blue-hazel eyes which I can't help but be jealous of. Ryan is wearing blue jeans and a white v-neck.

"Finished?" Ryan asks, bringing me out of my thoughts. I roll my eyes and cross my arms over my chest.

"Don't flatter yourself. There wasn't much to look at." I simply reply before walking up the stairs. Sadly, Ryan follows behind me as I enter River's room.

"Hey, your awake." I say as I sit next to River who is smiling up at me.

"Your sister is cute." I hear Ryan say and I turn to him, a small grin on my lips.

"This is my daughter." I say and Ryan's eyes go a little wide a my words. To be honest, I wasn't expecting any other reaction from Ryan because just like everyone else who has heard those words come out of my mouth has said, 'but your young'.

"How old are you?" Ryan asks and I roll my eyes.

"Believe it or not, I am twenty years old." I say and Ryan smirks.

"I'm a year older than you." Ryan says and I chuckle.

"Good for you. You want a trophy?"

"Only if the trophy is you." Ryan winks and I roll my eyes. I look back at River to see her frowning at Ryan.

"Who are you?" River asks and Ryan steps froward, smiling at River.

"I am your mom's friend." Ryan says and River looks at me. I sigh and nod.

I guess I can classify him as my friend since I'm going to be running into him a lot. I mean, he is my new neighbor.

"But my mommy is only friends with Logan." River frowns and I run my hands down my face. Did she really have to bring him up?

"Who's Logan?" Ryan asks as he looks over at me and I sigh.

"Ex-boyfriend." I say and Ryan raises his eyebrow as he points to River. I nod and Ryan smirks.

"Well River, I'm mommy's friend too." Ryan says and River slowly nods.

"Okay." River mumbles and before anyone says a word, I hear Julia call Ryan's name.

"Coming!" Ryan shouts and he turns back to me and River before waving.

"I'll see you tonight then." Ryan says and I nod. Ryan grins before walking out of River's room. I turn to River and she frowns at me.

"Is he coming over again?" River asks and I nod.

"Sadly yes." I say and River nods. As I start to talk to River about her arm, I can't help but wonder about Ryan.

Strange boy, he is.

"Oh my god, River is so cute!" Julia says as she look over at River who is happily watching My Little Pony on the television. I nod and continue to eat my vegetables.

"I know." I reply and Julia looks over at me and smiles.

"So, where is the boyfriend?" Julia asks and I ignore the looks that my brother is giving me which are basically saying 'don't lash out'.

"We broke up three years ago." I say and Julia's mouth forms into an 'o' at my words. I wave her off and sip my water.

"I'm sorry for bringing it up."

"Its fine." I say before standing up. I take my plate to the sink and drink the rest of my water before sitting with River on the couch. I take out my phone, blocking out the conversations that my mom and Julia are having. I scroll down Facebook and see a post that catches my eye.

It's a picture that Katie posted. It was of Logan and Drew, smiling at the phone as Drew wears a birthday hat on his head. I can't help but feel my heart clench as I look at how happy Logan looks.

Of course he is happy. He has everything he has ever wanted; a perfect family.

"Should I find it weird that you are glaring at a photo like you want to people in it to die?" I hear a voice say next to me and I look to my left to see Ryan frowning. I roll my eyes and switch off my phone.

"No. It's just... Ugh, never mind." I say and Ryan raises his eyebrow at me.

"Thats your ex in the photo." Ryan says and I frown at him.

"Do you know him?" I ask and Ryan shakes his head.

"Its a simple guess. Can I see the photo?" Ryan asks and I shrug, unlocking my phone and handing it to him. I watch as he looks at the photo, his eyes concentrating as he looks at Drew and Logan.

"Is the kid his?" Ryan asks, handing the phone back to me and I nod, placing the phone in my pocket. Ryan nods and sighs.

"And he is with another girl who is the mother of the child?" Ryan asks and I nod.

"Predictable." He says and I frown at him, my eyebrows furrowing.

"What is that suppose to mean?" I ask and Ryan shrugs.

"I suspected from the start when I saw your with your daughter that your boyfriend wasn't with you because he was with some other chick." Ryan says like it means nothing and I raise my eyebrow.

"You sound like you speak from experience." I say and Ryan shakes his head.

"No, I've seen it happen to my mom." Ryan replies and my mouth forms into an 'o' as I take in Ryan's words. Ryan nods and leans back in the couch, looking at the screen.

"What is this?" Ryan asks and I chuckle.

"My Little Pony." I say and Ryan raises his eyebrow at the screen then turns to me.

"And you let her watch this?" Ryan asks, referring to River and I nod, shrugging.

"I don't see the problem." I say, an amused smile playing at my lips and Ryan shakes his head.

"You going to brainwash your child and make her think that unicorns are real."

"And?"

"Unicorns aren't real." Ryan says, frustration clear on his face and I smile, turning around to see Casey standing behind the couch as she watches the television.

"Your sister seems to like it." I say, pointing to Casey and Ryan's eyes widen.

And let me just say, I dont think I've ever seen anyone jump that fast to block their siblings eyes because of My Little Pony.
