Chapter Forty Two - "I'm Sure You Know The Way."

Avery's P.O.V

"Logan!" I scream, banging on the front door. As I continue to bang my fists loudly on the wooden door, the memory of me doing this exact thing with Ryan fills my mind.

"Open this damn door!" I shout, banging my fists on the door repeatedly. I hear footsteps coming closer to the door but I didn't stop banging on it.

"Okay, okay, calm down!" I hear a certain voice say as the door swings open. I storm through the house and when I practically hear nothing but the television running, I turn to Jake.

"Where is your brother?" I snap, my eyes narrowing at Jake who looks like he just got out of bed.

It's two in the afternoon!

"Which one?" Jake asks and I lick my teeth in annoyance.

"Which one do you think?" I say, clenching my fist. Jake notices this and smirks.

"Oh, Logan? He is with Katie at her house."

Shaking my head, I calm myself down. Wait, calm myself down? Ha, I'm already pissed off.

After a few seconds, the door swings open, revealing Jake.

Oh, fuck my life.

"Where is your--"

"This feels a little repeated..." Jake comments, rubbing his eyes. "But did you have to do this at midnight? Some people are trying to sleep." Jake says and I shake my head.

"I need to see Logan." I say, tapping my fingers against my pants. Jake nods slowly, stepping aside from the doorway to let me in.

"Upstairs with Elena. I'm sure you know the way." Jake smirks, making me want to punch him. As I walk up the stairs that lead up to Elena's room, I hear Logan's soft voice sing to his little sister.

"But when it hurts, I can make it better. Girl, if that works, it's gon' be forever..." Logan sings, and something inside of me suddenly stops. I don't know what just happened but my anger is slowly going away even when I don't want it to.

"We've been through the worst, made it through the weather. Our problems and the pain... but love don't change..." Logan continues and I hear him sigh loudly. I peer my head into the room but don't enter. I stare at the two with my lips parted and my heart racing.

But suddenly, I'm frightened by the sudden tap on my shoulder from behind me, which makes me jump and basically fall right into Elena's room. Followed by my fall, I hear the laughter from Sarah.

"Oh, dear. I-I'm so sorry!" Sarah chokes out between laughs and I groan, my stomach on the floor as I lift my head to look at Logan who has a small smile on his face.

"Well, hello, sunshine."

"What did you do to Ryan?" I ask as soon as we enter his room. Logan closes the door behind him and sighs, walking over to his bed before sitting down.

"Are we really going to talk about him?" Logan asks and I nod, standing in front of him while crossing my arms over my chest.

"Yes, we are. You were on the phone before the police came. Who were you on the phone to?"

"Avery-"

"Tell me, Logan!" I shout, my arms dropping to my sides in anger. Logan grabs my hands and I don't pull them away, wanting him to explain.

"Okay, well you know how we went to see Jade and she said that Katie is planning something to get Drew or River? And how Jade said that Helena will get the proof from the phone calls?" Logan asks and I nod, deciding to sit down next to Logan instead of standing up. "Well, Helena had contacted me saying that Katie had called her after the meeting we had with her today." Logan explains and I furrow my eyebrows.

"What did Katie say?" 

"Listen for yourself." Logan says, pulling out his phone from his pocket. When he goes onto his messages, he clicks onto Helena's name and there is an attachment, which is probably the recording of the phone call.

When he clicks it, he hands me the phone. "Katie, you asshole-" Jade shouts into the phone but Katie cuts her off with a groan.

"All you do is whine. It's really annoying. Anyway, Ryan and I have the plan under control so it isn't long until everything is done." Katie says, making my eyes widen. 

"And what about the plan about helping me? What the - wait, who the hell is Ryan?" Jade asks and Katie sighs.

"Some guy who used to be Avery's neighbor or something. He wants to help me because of what Logan and Avery's brother did to him." Katie explains and I feel tears begin to well up in my eyes.

Someone who I thought was my real friend, someone who was there for me when I would've had no one, someone who I trusted... It was all fake.

"And how do you plan on taking both River and Drew?"

"Easy. Ryan is gaining Avery's trust." Katie says before chuckling. "And she left River with him for half an hour or whatever. Stupid girl."

"I hope karma comes to bite you in the ass." Jade says and Katie laughs.

"If karma showed up, I would be exactly where you are. But I'm not, so jokes on you." Katie says and I can imagine the grin on her face.

"Fuck you." Jade says and suddenly the recording is cut off with a final beep. I give the phone back to Logan, standing up from the bed. My heart is beating rapidly as Katie's words continue to ring in my head.

"And she left River with him for half an hour or whatever. Stupid girl." 

"I-I'm so stupid," I mumble, wiping the tears from my eyes. "And because of my stupidity, my family is at risk. My... my daughter is at risk."  I say, suddenly finding it hard to breathe. I turn around to face Logan. "And Drew..." I cry out, the tears beginning to form again. "It's all my fault, Logan."

Logan stands up from the bed almost immediately when those words leave my mouth. When I bump into the wall, Logan presses his hands on the wall behind me, caging me.

"Don't you dare say that. Avery." Logan says and I shake my head, letting the tears fall.

"I put everyone in this mess when I decided to come back. I put you in this mess..." I cry, grabbing onto Logan's shirt when he pulls me in for a hug.

"Stop blaming yourself. None of this is your fault." Logan says and I shake my head again, pushing him away from me.

"What if I didn't come back, Logan. What if I never left Australia with Aunty Heather and River? What if I never came back?" I ask, watching as Logan's face falls. "Tell me it's not my fault now, Logan." I say and when Logan tries to pull me in for a hug again, I push him away and wipe my tears away from my cheeks. "See."

And without saying another word, I walk out of the room, not even glancing at Sarah who looks confused and worried.

It's all my fault.

I am sorry for not updating but as some of you may know, I was on writer's block with this chapter, and I was on a break, so I am sorry. Now, I am back and ready to start writing again.
