Chapter 14 - Revelations

"My...phone?"
I looked at her in confusion for a second before slapping myself mentally.
Of course!
Why hadn't I thought of that before.
I fumbled around my pockets and grabbed it out. Thankfully it hadn't fallen out while we were stampeding.
I excitedly handed it to her after inserting the password. I was careful to adjust the bright light coming from the screen to make sure our hiding spot wouldn't be given up.
Daphne extended her hand out impatiently. "Done?"
"Yeah here!"
In a few seconds she was already calling someone. Probably help. Now, since this room was small, there was only one sort of cupboard placed away in a dusty corner and Daphne went to talk inside it. Her voice would be heard easily near the window and we couldn't risk it.
We were in the most secluded part of the school and everything was dead quiet. While we were distracted, some psychotic bitch was trying to possibly murder us for whatever the reason.
I hadn't heard much of her conversation with whoever was on the other side of the line but it seemed like she sounded pissed off.
"You better get your asses here in 5 or I'm going to kick your bums to hell got it." she sneered into my phone.
I chuckled at her cute tone. She was trying to act tough but whoever was on the other side of the line wasn't obviously an adult. She won't dare go colloquial otherwise she'll end up on a stake.
As she slowly crawled away from the cupboard, Daphne gave me a sly smirk before making a quick sign for me to come over and handed my phone back.
"Who was that?" I asked.
"Help, what else," she snorted.
"Seriously just tell me," I pondered making her spit out the information. She tried to swish away the question saying I'll know it when they get here but I grabbed her by the arm.
"Aishh. Alright. But don't get mad when you hear it because I think it's our best shot." she grumbled pulling away from my hand before taking a deep breath.
"It's a bunch of people we know coming to rescue us."
What?
I let out a dumbfounded face.
"You mean to tell me that people from "our class" are coming to - save us?" I asked slowly letting the words slip out as if I was trying to digest what she had just revealed.
"This is...diabolically crazy! This is insane. You are insane!" I almost screamed. How the fuck can a bunch of teenagers help us from a wild man. "Why didn't you call some adults or something. They could get hurt!" I hadn't realized that I had grabbed her by the scruff of her neck and shook her hard. She reached up for my hands and tried to calm me down but my grip only became stronger.
What was wrong with me? I've never had anxiety this bad before.
"Call someone else. Now." I commanded. I didn't know any of the adults number except the school's telephone. Damn it ...but I could try that! The question is - would they believe me? I'm in school where phones aren't allowed to be used during school hours so - why not?
"I'm calling the school." I announced firmly.
"What? No-no-no-no! You'll give us away!" she cried out in exasperation. "Besides help is already on the way, so you don't have to worry." I gave her a warning glare before taking out my phone.
My breathing turned labor as I felt the darkness clouding in and the only source of light came from my phone. I felt so compacted in this tiny space.
Black dots started forming around my eyes and as I tried to search for the number, Daphne managed to do the most shittiest move in her life.
She tried to tickle me to the ground and almost lost my balance which could have nearly given away our hiding place.
"Cut it out! Stop! Are you crazy he'll hear us," I gasped in agony and tried to dodge away from her fingers. "If I wasn't so tired I could have slapped you by now."
"You have to trust me." was all she said and grabbed my face. The phone in my hand almost slipped when she took me by surprise but I didn't budge.
I held onto my phone hard and balled my empty hand into a tight fist.
My eyes grew cold.
"Look at me in the eyes Scar. You need to calm down. Listen to me." I shook my head and tried to get away from her grasp but she slightly dug her nails into my cheeks making me yelp.
"Listen to me Scar! If you don't...we'll never get out of this." she tried to reason but that just made be more anxious.
Finally after several minutes of cursing her I collapsed to the floor not meeting her eyes when she bent down to talk to me. She had her hands on my shoulders.
"I'm so sorry Scar I didn't know you don't do well with closed areas and I didn't mean for all this to happen."
"I'm fine dude. It's just that I haven't eaten or drank anything in the past few hours." I affirmed. "Besides, this guy can't seriously be that stupid right?" But Daphne just kept shaking her head with a "no". "He'll eventually tire out."
"You don't know who we're dealing with here Scar that's why I'm desperate." She laid her head onto my lap as if asking for forgiveness. This was actually making me feel awkward but I went along with it.
"I know you didn't. I'm just asking why I shouldn't contact the adults instead of risking our friends lives. Are you crazy? The guy is lethal and probably armed!"
Daphne didn't answer. She just laid there quietly engulfing the darkness.
"If this was under normal situations, I'd do it. But unfortunately or fortunately it isn't." she said.
I raised an eyebrow. "What does that mean?"
"It means dear child, that this adventure will be the turning point of your life." she explained as she looked at me with twinkles in her eyes.
"Ok..." I said giving her a weird look. Daphne then sat up and took a seat next to me on the floor and we sat in silence.
"Since we're waiting here, can't you tell me about that history thing?" I asked hopefully. Daphne almost jumped up in excitement when she heard that and squeezed me in her hug.
"Absolutely though I think this time I can truly tell you." she giggled. "Alright so far I've barely told you anything."
I nodded.
"Ready?"
"As I'll ever be!" I beamed.
"So about 110 years ago-," she began.
"Whoa that old?" I asked.
Daphne rolled her eyes. "Yes that old. If you don't zip up you'll never hear it now shut up," she snapped. "There was a leading business in the market that had gone without competition completely for many years. They were legendary. They started out small at first but thanks to the owner's skills and tactics they became one of the most successful in the country."
"It was tough to compete against them and when they try to challenge them for their spot they immediately regret it after realizing they were no match for 'em. I have no idea how they did it but they drove others to the ditches."
"The man who started it all was called Asher Aquino. He lived with his beautiful loving wife, Ophelia Aquino. They were the perfect couple and had 7 amazing kids with her. He lived for nearly 70 years and watched all of them grow up to be as successful as him because most of them were boys and he only had 3 girls. One in particular of these kids took up from where his father left and continued striving in the market."
"Now keep in mind that this story is going to be sort of queer. His name was Caleb Aquino. Famous as well as handsome. He was the youngest of the boys and born the 6 out of all the kids."
"He like his old dad, was a charming man with a kind personality. Everyone praised and liked him the moment he claimed the business was his. His other siblings took up other professions as they were not interested in it and Caleb started working at the age of 18. Soon however, he met his beloved wife, sweet Miss Haylee at the age of 26. This is where the story gets - depressing." Daphne frowned.
"Why?" I asked.
"A year later their conceived their first born children who were twins and they were over the moon when they found out. However, one afternoon Mr. Caleb had to rush off to an urgent business trip and wouldn't be back for at least a week. This left the Miss all alone with the household and couldn't wait for his return. Keep in mind that this was nearly half a century ago and people's houses weren't as close as they were today."
"Miss Haylee was out strolling by herself in the garden when she caught sight of a man near the greenhouse. No one was around at that time because she insisted that she needed her personal space. She described him to have been dressed smart with slick brown hair combed back. She walked closer and saw that this man looked almost like her husband. Thinking that he'd finally return home she ran at 3 months pregnant and gleefully shouting why he hadn't warned her earlier. Alas, when she got there the man she thought was her husband didn't answer her with the same tone and had his back facing her. She was confused and heart broken when she asked him again but still he didn't reply. So she advanced forward but suddenly halted when she felt something wasn't right. She then observed the man more carefully and when he turned around - she gave an enormous scream. Any questions so far?"
"Yes, is this real?" I asked sarcastically.
"Obviously! Why do you think I'm telling you all this!" I shrugged while Daphne just crossed her arms.
"Continue please."
"Alright, now where were we... oh yes! When he turned to look at her, his eyes were all but completely black and he stared at her swollen stomach which carried her children. He had a very pale face and large onyx eyes. He then backed away from the still screaming woman and vanished within the garden trees."
"The Aquino's butler and servants all came rushing down to see what had happened and by then they were already too late. Miss Haylee was unconsciously lying on the floor with her hand tightly clutched on her stomach and a doctor was immediately called."
"Oh please don't tell me what I'm thinking might be correct," I whispered as I bit my bottom lip. The story was escalating so fast yet it sounded so odd.
"She was carried gently to her room and the doctor examined her. Mr. Caleb was called and his trip was cut short. The very next day Caleb came rushing through the doors and barged into their bedroom. There Miss Haylee laid recovering from her previous incident."
"The servants had already filled him in from what they gathered and specifically mentioned that the Mistress had seen him the other day but turned out to be some kind of monster. Mr. Caleb was dumbfounded and shocked but refused to believe it until he got home. He was fuming and they'd never seen him angrier than he was then.
"Caleb caught hold of his wife in an embrace and asked of their babies health. They turned out fine and her pregnancy went by quickly with no incident like that day occurred again. Caleb refused to acknowledged he had a doppelganger and tried persuade his wife that she was merrily dreaming or that it was just the pregnancy. He then blames their servants and butler that they hadn't been taking of her properly and threatened to fire them. Miss Haylee just went with the flow but deep inside she knew what she had encountered. Mr. Caleb had gone on some trips but didn't leave her unguarded."
"Five months later, she gave birth to the twin girls. Unfortunately as soon as the doctors saw them they instantly knew it was very wrong. One of the girls had a white skin color and the other had a very dark tone almost black. This sent everyone to shock and Miss Haylee cried non stop. The doctor then announced that the babies are unable to live longer and the died minutes after their birth. It was a devastating event and Miss Haylee and her husband were completely sent to depression because of their unluckiness. They had so wanted a child and the twins were the heart of their lives and the doctors tried kept trying to figure it out but still couldn't get anything out of it and if Mr. Caleb were to tell them the incident they'd just laugh at a mad man."
"After this the couple moved into a different location after that unfaithful day and was left but a scar to them. Miss Haylee mostly as she knew that now her husband believed her. However life was too short to grieve forever and they had five kids. Four girls and a troublesome boy. A boy was born after the 3rd girl but died at the age of 7 due to an illness. Their eldest was a girl and the 2nd was a boy and as you know the rest were all but girls."
"So how interesting was this?" she asked taking a short break. I was really fascinated by this story that I was sure time had froze. I wanted to know more about this interesting family than ever.
"Amazing! Although I didn't like the part about the fate of the twins. That was very sad. I don't know how they coped up with it." I said with sympathy. "But it seemed hard to believe the family is really not that hard to like and so many people! God if only I can make mine into a story like this," I exhaled.
"My family is really big too and my mom has 4 siblings and the order of Mr. Caleb's children were exactly like my Mom's!" I giggled."Weird."
"Well this is a small world after all!" exclaimed Daphne shifting from her seat.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing, just excited to tell you the next part!"
"Now that they're all married and the business was passed to the 4th child." Daphne narrated and now she was looking at me excitedly. "She was the apple of her father's eyes. She was everything a guy could ask for. Smart, talented, sporty, a great singer and most of all - romantic. She inherited the family business after graduating from university and was now the 3rd generation. Her name is Zoe Aquino and she is happily married to her husband and currenlty has 2 daughters. The eldest will be the next heir."
"Oh that's wonderful! Bet they're enjoying heir life now," I said. Daphne just shrugged. "I mean it is a family business and by the sound of it they seemed really rich."
"Well yeah...I-I guess so." Daphne faltered. "They are well respected but like all families they keep dark secrets."
"Cliche! I know how this is gonna end. But I still don't see how this relates to me," I frowned.
"Ah, that's for you to find out next time Scar," she winked.
"Next time ? Why?" I asked. Can't she just tell me now? "If you're in hell way saying I'm sort of related to them, that's where you're completely bonkers. My Dad works as a manager in a coffee shop and my mom is a house wife. My family never had that history and never will so if you could kindly-" I faltered. Daphne had a finger held up onto her lips.
"Shh," she whispered. "I know that. We'll continue later but for now - listen."Daphne almost fell back and doubled over.
"Why?" I asked suddenly remembering the danger we were still in.
"I'm afraid our voices will be heard. The hall had become oddly quite." she mumbled under her breath. I carefully listened. She was right. We stopped talking and everything was set back to the present.
"Do you know him?" I asked out of the blue.
"Yes," she answered quietly as sniffles could be heard outside. Whoa, Daphne and her mood swings change almost instantly.
"And he's not a man we should be dealing with alone let alone only me at your side trying to defend us."
"Then what about the guys?" I had almost forgotten them because of that story.
Honestly, I wasn't worried I was just curious but at the end I didn't want anyone hurt because of our stupid mistake of leading ourselves into a trap.
"I have my faith in them. If there's anyone who can get us from this mess, its them."
Again. Them? Who were they ?
I couldn't say anything. They sounded like her guardians or whatever you call them. Who were these guys that can possibly save us? No freaking idea.
All the guys in my class I know or rather our school didn't even seem like they know how to do anything besides playing football.
And now they're going to come rescue us, whoever "they" are. I mean we were just a few feet away from calling help and the most reasonable thing to do was to call an adult. However Daphne insisted we were going to be fine.
I was just confused, shaking and on the verge of making a leap to kill that man.
If only I had a weapon besides brooms and air fresheners. Although...that could work. But on the other hand the guy must have a gun. How do I know that ? No clue, just siding with my gut's hypothesis.
"The guys and some others are going to be here anytime soon. They told us to prepare for anything and get away as soon as they arrive. I've already told them our location. It just takes 5 minutes from their current position."
"Well it seems like forever. Who's coming and where are they?" I asked curiously. Daphne stiffen next to me as I looked up at her, fist balled and eyes strained as if trying to look through the curtained window.
"They're...at the football ground..."
"That's great!" I said and almost jumped with excitement. Being cramped in this suffocating place was making me go crazy with all the dust and dim light creating a lonely atmosphere.
"...but I warn you. Don't freak out when you see them. Just act like you haven't when we get out of this, ok" she stated. I gave her a weird look before silently nodded my head absently as I thought of it. What could possibly be shocking with a bunch of boys holding a cricket bat or something. "Promise?"
Shrugging I said, "Whatever, I can't promise anything Daff but as long as we get outta this dump I'm agreeing on anything just to get fresh air."
"You have to," she pressed making me grow nervous. I've been having the weirdest months lately and so far this adventure seemed to top it all - for now.
"We'll see..." I said narrowing my eyes to the door.
**
"WAIT!" I said. Daphne whirled around to face me. "Why does he keep calling my name and not yours?"
"I'll try to explain later but for now - we have to hurry." she quickly answered and peered up the to check if our intruder was still lurking about.
It was quiet outside. Too quiet.
According to my phone it was nearly 15 minutes and the guys were still not here! What the heck were they doing, dancing? I was literally going to die from the lack of oxygen or maybe it's just the musty smell in this place.
We slowly crept nearer the window and stuck our faces at both ends of the curtain. The hallway seemed clear and almost seemed like he had given up.
"He's gone?" I asked as my yes wondered all over the place, searching. We stood there hunched still being cautious when Daphne gave a sigh of relief.
That was way to early.
A man's face suddenly slammed with force against the window and banged his head hard onto the glass sending us screaming like we've never screamed in our life. I almost brought down the whole curtain to the ground. His face had fresh bloody cuts on it and dirty looking hair that looked dreadfully oily and unwashed for months.
We were still screaming as his face showed some more gruesome scars and dented crooked teeth that were black to its core.
I was extremely horrified. Daphne grabbed onto my arm and pointed at the intruder who was on full view. She was shaking as much as I was from the surprising hurl that it almost gave me a heart attack.
One thing just kept repeating from my mind ever since he showed up.
"He knew where we were!"
The curtains dropped to the floor revealing us ever exposed to the man to attack us, if he ever broke through the tough exterior of the window. He had his mouth open widely at us and his eyes were deep red and a tint of yellow. He looked like a wild man from the stone age except this one was worse. He was - almost inhuman. His eyes would dart from here to there like a lost creature.
He suddenly backed away giving some distance between the window and him. Like a wild animal, his teeth actually left marks on the window and saliva was dripping from his mouth was now too against the glass.
"Gross," we shrieked in disgust and I covered my mouth to prevent myself from puking.
Now we could see him clearly.
His left eye had a long gash starting from his eyebrow to the middle of his cheek and continued to his jawline. He was wearing a ragged outfit with a gun hanging dangerously at his side and it looked like he was going to use it any time soon.
I-was-right!
"Holy crap then this would mean that we were actually going to die," I yelled in my mind.
"No we're not!" shouted back Daphne.
"What how did you know what I said in my brain?" I asked raising an eyebrow.
"You were yelling at the top of your lungs!" Oh, made sense.
He then looked to his right where the door stood as a barrier between us and him.
We were freaking trapped!
I racked my brain for any ideas but I was totally blank. I looked over to Daphne but she was still freaking her shit out.
I tried to stay still and reconsider our situation.
Alright, we are about to take our final breaths because Daphne refused to call any actual help that might have had us out by now but instead called a bunch of irresponsible 4 year old to come and save us. Great. And now we are going to die.
I sighed.
This is why I shouldn't go dreaming big about life.
I really wanted to become a werewolf one day. I actually may become one after I die when I wish for it so maybe the time is right for me to die.
Happy thoughts bro.
Anyways back to reality.
"I swear to god I'm going to kill you for this Daphne!" I shouted over my shoulders where she stood crouching behind me.
"Why? I thought we agreed to be neutral!" she cried with a terrified voice as the the psycho began banging against the door's frame. We screamed so loud that my ears were about to give away.
"We're gonna die!" I admit I was over reacting here but who wouldn't!
"Shut up we're not going to die!"
"Yes we are! Where the fuck are those people then?" I dead panned in fury.
"I hate you! God if he actually breaks through that door, which I wouldn't be surprised about, I will personally murder you with my own hands not before killing him first tho," I threatened eyeing the door. My eyes were straining hard that I felt like they were going to pop out.
"Daphne," I whispered quietly. "Grab some brooms from the cupboard and I'll go find some other useful things. We are not going to let him in undefended."
She nodded her head slowly but took us a few minutes to move. We had been frozen in place for so long I would have grown roots. If I were a plant.
Scampering in different directions I grabbed a metal chair and air fresheners while Daphne the brooms. I tried moving the cupboard and testing it's mass to see if we could barricade the door.
Nope, it was too heavy.
By this time, dried sweat clung tightly onto my skin and I would have felt disgusted if we weren't in this situation. My shirt stuck against my body making me feel even more uncomfortable.
How else could be this be possibly worse?
"Got everything?" Daphne asked tensely. Her breathing was heavy and tired. Guess mine was the same too.
I nodded my head as we took our positions. We didn't have to make a plan. It was pure instincts.
Defend and attack.
If the guys aren't going to be here yet then we'll have to get outta this solo.
Although I didn't see how when he's got a weapon stronger than ours. But we had to do it.
We stayed in silence praying for this to be over soon. I was covered in sweat, dust and a tornado of emotions as I started getting flashbacks and apologizing early for all the shit I did to piss off my family since I was born.
Better to die in purity.
The sound of a crooked laughter filled the halls with his echoes. It cringed me that goosebumps were starting to show up.
The man hadn't stop for even a second and the door looked ready to be broken to pieces. I had began to wonder why he wouldn't use his gun to just finish us off. Maybe it was without pellets and was just scaring the fuck outta us.
"I'm not going to go away if that's what you think. Better give up now since you know I'm a danger to ya." he whispered hoarsely. "Open this door now. Otherwise I'd have to continue breaking this down."
"Try us." shouted Daphne. I shot her a threatening glare which she only shrugged with an apology.
"Way to go Daff," I gritted, rolling my eyes. "Try us Are you kidding me!" I shoved my hand into my pocket and checked the time.
We've been here for nearly more than an hour.
"Sorry," she mumbled with innocent eyes. I sighed before turning my attention back to the door. He started all over again and he really seemed like a drunkard.
I clutched the broom around my hand tightly than ever while the other was on the metal chair. We were ready. But then the banging stopped.
"I can smell your fear girls." he whispered through the door in a loud raspy voice. "I'm coming in as a friend so don't attack me with your little toys. That will not help."
Well yeah true that.
And with that he let out a louder maniac giggle. Daphne moved closer to me but hadn't changed from her position.
This bitch was creeping me out more than ever. I was definitely sure he ran way from a mental asylum and I'll make sure he'll get deported back faraway in an island where mental people are kept - that is as soon as I figured out a way to get outta this deep shit.
"Can he perhaps be some kind of demon like in your story?" I asked with sarcasm.
"What the hell are you saying!" she screamed.
"Well he doesn't look human!" I yelled back and jumped when the banging got even more louder.
The booming coming from the door made me stay in the same place as fear got the best of me.
"I'm coming in girls. Get ready to welcome me!" he cackled evilly. Oh, he had no idea. He started his banging again when suddenly everything went dead.
Bang! Bang!
Everything went silent.
"Was...that the sound of a gun?" I asked breaking the silence.
Bang-Bang!
Went the sound of a gun again.
I looked towards the door but didn't see any holes or damage.
"What happened?" I asked unconsciously. The air around us was getting so thick that I was going to faint.
I squinted and gathered up as I pulled Daphne with me and trudged towards the window. I felt like I was in some zoo and I was trying to look inside the cage of a dangerous predator.
"They're here!" gasped Daphne in glee. She ran towards the window dropping her "weapons" and started squealing.
"They're here! The man got shot! He's lying on the floor. The guys are here!" she screamed in happiness. Whoa never seen her this excited before.
Finally.
I let out a sigh of relief as Daphne carefully opened the door. Immediately a huge gust of air from the cold A/C in the hallway swept me off my mind. I was finally breathing again.
The sounds of footsteps calmed me down and soon I recognized them. They were boys from all dressed in this dark attire and probably my classmates - or I think they are?
There were more than 10 of them and what shocked me the most almost took my breath away.
I should have recognized them by now but I actually didn't.
Daphne left me there alone before I could say anything and barged to her freedom. Almost instantly she started to shout loudly to some of the guys and hitting them for being late.
I followed slowly a little way back but was stopped on my tracks.
Standing at the entrance of the door was a boy about my age but looked a bit older and was smirking down at me.
Now, it was my turn to drop everything and stared in surprise.
He was looking tall and was the only obstacle between me and the door.
He had ear piercings on one ear and ripped jeans with a matching black hoodie. His black timberland boots and black cap turned backwards with a bunch of rings on the tip made him all but a bad boy.
Soft looking dark wavy brown hair were tossed almost perfectly to adjust to his cap. A deep purple bandanna, like a choker, was wrapped skillfully but almost loosely around his neck. His shining brown orbs were full of mischief.
But most of all that were making me uneasy me was the mask that was covering his identity. But even if I can't see his mouth smirking his eyes were.
He was all but trouble.
I probably looked like an idiot standing there because all I could do was just gawking like a breathless fish.
I was so messed up.
This would be how I would dress if I weren't wearing my uniform and in school. Dang it. Yeah I was irrevocably jealous that he had to be the one saving us in those designer clothes.
I gave him a dirty look and scrunched up my nose from the dust.
"Took them long." I scoffed inwardly sending him glares.
Anger started to boil in me when I realized it and inspected his outfit even closer.
He and his freaking friends took hours to dress up when they knew we were at stake with a devil psychotic creature and here he was grinning like a maniac.
Was I suppose to be grateful he saved us just in time or was it by coincidence?
Whoever he was deserves a slap from me.
Did I know him? I felt like I should.
Shrugging my shoulders I tried to say something but my throat was too dehydrated.
We were currently having an intense staring contest and I felt like I was winning. However my sneeze got the best of me and I had to turn around and hold my breath.
His smirk grew even more under that mask of his and from that moment it hit me like a million boulders raining from the clouds.
I knew that smirk anywhere. Even if it were covered.
Could it be?
Suddenly my eyes started to from tiny dots again and my mind was getting dizzy.
I felt my legs dangerously on the verge of giving away. I tried shaking my head but it only made a start to a headache.
I felt my eyes drooping heavily towards the floor before finally I gave into it.
"No-no-no-no!" I screamed internally. I ripped my eyes open only to find it shutting automatically.
"Now is not the fucking time to disappear when I'm finally going to get outta here." I heard a loud crash and screams. Though, it didn't seem like it was coming from the present.
I was having flashbacks.
However the darkness became merciless and took total control as it started to plunge around me fast and soon I fell into an enveloped oblivion.
