'Welcome' home
I wake up, taking a second to remember what happened yesterday. I get up quietly, walking out of the room quietly. I go into the kitchen, trying to find a little bit of something to eat. I didn't want to disturb anyone or cause trouble. I grab onto the plastic front of a loaf of bread that was hanging off the edge of the counter. I pull it down, making sure to catch the loaf carefully. I don't want to squish the bread and make it obvious after all.
I open it and stick a piece in my mouth. I try to tie up the plastic while eating a bit of the bread. Footsteps sound throughout the house, as if someone is coming down the stairs. I toss the loaf of bread back up on the counter then hide under the table quickly. Footsteps come even closer until I see shoes and purple pants right next to me. "Why are you hiding?" I flush a little bit from fear, since I broke mom's rule. I always thought that everyone had the same rules so I tried to follow them everywhere. "Kids shouldn't be heard or seen." I state quietly, repeating my mom's old rule that was drilled into my head. "Get out from under there." I climb out just as he instructed.
"Are you seriously only eating a plain piece of bread." He questions while giving me a look. I look down in response, not knowing that it was off limits. He grabs the loaf of bread and opens it up. "Time for you to learn what the best food in the world tastes like." He says while putting two pieces of the toast in the toaster. When it pops up he grabs it and hands me a piece, then starts to eat his own. By now I've already ate my piece of bread so I take a bite. MY eyes widen a bit and I fall in love with the taste. We continue to eat in silence until we're both finished.
"Thank you." I say politely, but it was barely able to be heard. "What's the deal with you being so damn quiet?"He huffs out a bit. "I don't know...I'm just used to trying to stay quiet..." I hesitantly try to explain while he just stares at me blankly. "Who is your mom anyway?" I look at him a little confused as I try to remember her actual name. "Janet Marrer... I think." His hand clutches a bit. His face is usually unreadable to me but it kind of looked like he was angry. Maybe he was trying to stay calm for me, I wouldn't bet on it though. "Of course that bitch would pull shit like that." He hisses out quietly to himself. "What did she do to you exactly?" That simple question just perplexed me. As if I should know what to say but I really don't. I tell him bits and pieces, just what she usually used to do.
"You don't have to worry about that stuff anymore. You live with me now. There's different rules here than that hell hold." My eyes grow wide in shock. "I thought you didn't want me..." I look away nervously, since that slipped out. "Yeah, I didn't, but now I do. I wanna show those dumb asses wrong. Plus I actually like you now." He smirks a bit. "Parasites do grow on people and hard to get rid of, after all." I let out a quiet laugh. "The new rule then are you follow are: don't mess with my stuff, don't break anything, clean up your mess, and listen to what I tell you to do." I nod at his words. These new rules are quite simple compared to the old ones. It was strange but I can live with it.
"So what should we do now?" I question while looking up at him. "Well I have work tonight, so you get to keep yourself busy." He walks away with that, without a care. I go back upstairs and to my room. The whole house is mostly empty or just doesn't have anything to do. I'll just have to wait like usual.
