Prologue
She stands in the breeze.
I'm okay, she thinks.
They've forgiven me, she thinks.
But she didn't need her demons there to doubt her worth.
They say they care about her, appreciate her, have faith she'll be the pure soul she was destined to be.
But what if they were lying?
She lays down in the grass, listening to the squeals and giggles of the kids running around nearby. One of the voices sound... unfamiliar. Yet totally familiar at the same time.
Is that me? she thinks.
Then she sees the spirit; herself as a young child, prancing in the grass with the cousin and best friend she lost, the necklace of her late grandmother around her neck.
Where is that necklace? she thinks.
The amethyst necklace around the neck of her past self begins to glow sightly, the child now slowing. She stares down at the necklace in wonder. "My necklace! Max, Ross, look!" the girl exclaims.
Two young boys come and also stare in amazement at the necklace. "Wow! Is Granny's necklace magic?!" one grins.
"No," said the other boy. "Magic isn't real!"
What a funny statement, the girl, the real girl, solid and present, thinks with a smile.
The children begin to fade from existence, the only yells and laughs from those she and her friends took in.
Her mind wanders back to the necklace. She missed that necklace, although she didn't know where it was. She should find it. That's what she thinks.
She hears a friend calling her name from the door of the FAE base.
"Shelby!" comes Scott's voice. "Shelby!"
