Chapter 23
I groan after I look at the time.
12:34 p.m.
One more minute and it's lunch time. Hunger and my stomach aren't a very good pair. I try to stop my stomach from growling by squeezing it. I even fake cough just to cover up the horrid sound. I couldn't take it anymore and the teacher was babbling non-sense.
"And with that, the atoms will-"
Ring!
I stand up and slam my book shut. I am a hungry teen and no one is going to stop me from getting food into my system. I run out the classroom right after the teacher dismisses us.
"Paradice Newman! Get your ass over here!" I hear Ray shout behind me as I dash through the students. "Can't, I need food! Meet me at the cafeteria." I yell back, hoping that she hears me over the loud noise.
I sigh in relief when the line of the queue wasn't long.
Someone grabs my shoulder and turns me around. "God dammit, couldn't you wait for awhile?" Ray asks while panting. I give her an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I thought the line was going to be long."
She rolls her eyes and then waves her hand. "No, it's alright. I know how you act around food anyway." She mentions and queue behind me. I shrug and then turn in front. "Can't deny the truth now, can we?" I mutter.
After I take my food, I quickly shove it down my throat due to the hungriness. "Whoa, slow down, my friend." Ray says as she takes a seat in front of me. "You are going to choke yourself." She adds and then takes a bite out of her burger.
I shake my head with my mouth full of food. "No, I won't." I state but it sounds more like 'O, a wo.".
Of course, Ray finishes before me no matter how hungry I am. "I've got to go though. Miss Luna said that she wants to see for something." She tells me and gives me a frown. I shrug. "It's okay." I wave her off.
"Meet you at our classroom after?" She offers and I nod. "Yeah, sure. Bye." I swallow my food down before saying. Ray goes off and I am alone with my thoughts again.
But before the thoughts accompany me, someone takes over Ray's seat.
"Hey honey." He smiles. "Wasn't expecting to see you here." I affirm as I take a bite out of my pizza. "I saw you eating alone so I thought that you need some company." He grins.
I smile at his action. "Thanks, baby. You shouldn't have though." I show him my gratitude by patting his hand. He shrugs and then takes a sip of his drink. "I want to. What kind of boyfriend would I be if I don't accompany my own girl?"
My own girl, I love how that sounds.
I can feel my cheeks getting hotter. "Oh well, um..." I laugh awkwardly due to my boyfriend being a sweetheart. "Speechless?" He raises an eyebrow and gives me a cocky look.
I swat his hand. "Shut up." I hiss and then take the last bite of my pizza. I take my plate and stand up. Austin follows me as I put the plate into the container and I swear I feel like every pair of eyes in the cafeteria is staring at us.
Afterwards, we walk out of the cafeteria slowly. I was surprise at how Austin calm he is about us walking together. The cafeteria is somehow silent when we are walking and I can't help but wonder if gossip really travels that fast.
"Have you realise how everyone was quiet and watching us when we were walking together?" I ask him and he shrugs like it was nothing and puts his arm on my shoulder. "They were probably jealous. We do look like a loving power couple, if I do say so myself." He chuckles and I shove him off me playfully. "Get away, you cocky bastard. I want my gentleman back."
He throws his head back and laughs. "Sorry to burst you bubble, lady, but the gentleman and the cocky bastard is in one person." I fake gasp. "I am dating a two-faced person this whole time?" I try to take a few steps back but he catches me before I could get too far.
"Hey! I'm still that loving boy that you love." He states and then pokes my side. I giggle due to the tickles. "I'm sure he's in there somewhere." I tease and with that, I am tossed over his shoulder.
"Let me down, Austin! I just ate, for fuck's sake." I yell as I hit his back repeatedly.
Probably realising his mistake, he quickly puts me down. A little too fast, if I may add. "Head rush." I wobble a little as I stand on my two feet. "Sorry." He gives me a sheepish smile. I shake my head. "It's alright." I dismiss him as we continue walking. Thank God no one actually saw that little moment that we had.
"Where do you want to go?" He asks me and I shrug. But then, I snap my fingers when I just remembered something. "Do you mind if we go to the library for a little while? I need to borrow a book." I plead and I am replied with him rolling his eyes.
"I swear you and your book obsession." He mumbles with a little curve on the corner of his lips.
"I swear you and your badminton obsession." I fire back with a smug look on my face.
He stares at me for awhile before shrugging, defeated by yours truly. "Touché. Let's go then," He says and holds the door of the library for me. "Thanks." I smile and walk past him. "No problem, honey," He whispers the last word into my ear and god dammit, it always makes me blush.
I am grateful how patient Austin is as he waits for me to borrow a book from the library. I know that he hates being around books - 'bibliophobia' is the scientific word for it, something that I tease him often - so it's a small yet meaningful gesture that he is trying his best to sit still and wait for me.
He is preoccupied by the smaller kids that attends kindergarten here so he is doing okay. They are surrounding Austin and he is entertaining them by telling jokes or stories, I guess.
Looking at him caring about those small kids, I unconsciously smile because he looks like the perfect father. I know that I'm still young but I couldn't help but imagine little Austins or little Paradices running around him. Two boys will pull him away so that their father can teach them how to play badminton but then a girl will come out of the house and pull him back in so that he can tell her a story.
It seems like another perfect future for us.
"Paradice?" I snap out of the trance when I hear someone call my name. Someone was tugging my shirt so I look down. It is one of the kids that surrounded Austin. "He's looking for you." She states and I thank the librarian once more before walking towards my boyfriend.
"Ah, there she is." Austin smiles when he makes eye contact with me. "She is your princess?" One of the kids asks and I raise an eyebrow at Austin. He nods and I didn't miss the redness that is creeping its way up his cheeks. "Yes, she is the beautiful princess that I save from the tower." Austin boosts. I blush at the way he said the sentence.
He picks a boy from the 'crowd' and places him on his lap. "Are you going to marry her someday?" The boy on his lap asks and Austin gives him a smile. I lean against Austin and look at the precious moment next to me. "Probably." My stomach flips at his answer.
Then, my shirt is tugged once again. I look down and notice that it is the same kid who tugged my shirt before. I pick her up and carry her by the hip. "Do you love your prince?" She questions while pointing at Austin. I take a look at him and I realise that he is already staring.
I couldn't help but smile. "Yes, I love him very much." I state and I feel an arm snaking around my waist. I notice that it is Austin as he lays his hand against my side. "Well, do you love her?" The girl turns to him and he shrugs. "She's alright, I guess." I punch his shoulder and he wince a little.
"Of course I love her. She's is my first love and I would like it very much if she is my last too." Austin states while staring into my eyes. The kid in my arms probably thought that I was about to kiss Austin so she squirms in my arms. I laugh and break eye contact with Austin. I put the kid down, same as Austin.
"Thank you for the story, Austin. The kids seemed to love it very much." The teacher comes by to show her gratitude towards him. He waves a hand in dismissal. "No biggie. It's cool to see the smile on the kids' faces. It warms my heart."
Yeah, he's going to be a great father someday.
The teacher turns to me. "Better hold on to this one, Paradice. This one is a keeper." She gives me a wink and I giggle. The kindergarten teacher is cool so it is fine for her to know that me and Austin are an item. "Of course." I put my arm on Austin's shoulder. "He couldn't leave even if he tries." I joke and Austin's grip on my waist tightens. "Wouldn't even think of it." He says.
The teacher and the kids wave at us as they walk out the library. They are so cute that I hope that my future kids are as cute as them.
"Princess, aye?" I bring it up and give him a sly smirk. He rubs the back of his neck. "The kids seemed to be digging in the story." He explains and I laugh but then shushed by the librarian. I give her an apologetic look. "Don't be embarrassed. I think it's cute." I smile and pull him up.
He wraps his arms around me and then we both walk out of the library. "So what book did you borrow?" He asks. I raise my eyebrow in suspicion. "Since when do you take an interest in books?" I show him the book and he examines it. "Since my girlfriend loves it so much." He utters without looking at me.
"Romeo and Juliet and Vampires?" He says the title of the book out loud while questioning it.
I shrug and take it from his hands. "It's a good book. I've read it once and I think it's an interesting twist to the original one by Shakespeare." I comment even though I know that he has no interest in it. "Whatever floats on your boat." He grins and then lead me downstairs.
"You should be grateful that I understand how some people don't like books as much as I do. If I don't, you are probably in a grave right now." I mentions as we walk down the stairs. "I doubt that, Par. You love me too much to do it." He points out and I hate how he was right.
He gives me a sly grin like he knew what I was thinking and then hugs me from behind - which is a total surprise since we are in the hallways where everyone can see us. He lays his head on mine and then he sighs, his grin long gone.
"Have you thought about the offer?" He asks. I raise an eyebrow as I try to think about what he is talking about. "What offer?" I question. His jaw drops but then he recovers quickly. "You know, that offer." He tries to make me remember while making hand gestures.
I give him a just-tell-me-dammit look. He chuckles but then turns serious. "You and me going out? Ring any bells?" He asks and something inside me snaps.
Fucking hell, I was so into Austin dating me since two weeks back that I forgot about the date - technically he didn't call it a date but now we are dating so it's a date. I actually didn't thought of that matter until now.
"Well..." I trail off. He frowns immediately. "You don't want to go, do you?" He asks. Before I could even reply him, he starts pacing around the hallway. "Dammit, I should've known that you weren't gonna accept." He keeps chanting and pulls the end of his hair tighter and tighter.
I try to stop him but he keeps pushing me away. Oh hell no, I am not dealing with bipolar Austin right now. I grab his shoulders and force him to look me in the eyes.
"Stop sulking, Austin. You didn't even gave me a chance to reply." I say wearily. "I did." He defends himself. I shake my head. "No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
"No, you did not."
"I did too!" He huffs.
"Stop it. You know damn well that you didn't." I cross my arms in front of my chest.
We both start a staring contest but then he blinks his eyes after a few seconds. "Hah!" I point at him and then giggle. "Truth is, I didn't thought of the offer until now. But since you've mentioned it, I guess I agreed to it right after we told each other that we love one another." His eyes dances with delight. "Really?" He asks but then puts up a hand. "Wait, how about your mother? She would be pissed if she knows that you are going out with me."
I shrug. "I'll figure something out." I say and he laughs. "Oh yes, I forgot that you are one sneaky girlfriend." He walks me to class and a few of my classmates look at us like we have five heads all together.
"That's just how I roll." I finger gun him and he kisses my cheek.
I gasp because of three things:
One, it's the third time that he kissed my cheek.
Two, I'm still not used to him doing that so unexpectedly.
Three, Henry was behind Austin and he saw it.
"What the actual fuck?!" Henry's jaw drops.
Fucking hell.
