Acknowledging the Deity

Tanaka rushed to the hospital, accompanied by Nishinoya, as soon as they were told that Kodama or rather Gina was confined in the Kenshin hospital due to a sudden collapse. The wing spiker directly headed to the nurse station to ask what room Kodama Gina was confined to. After thanking the nurse who told him that Kodama was in ward 127, he and Nishinoya dashed up the stairs, scurrying around the hallways to find the numbers 1-2-7 on a door. Successfully, they found it, but later their attention averted to the two figures, sitting on the floor, one head leaned over a shoulder of a certain delinquent.

"S-Shin-chan and Ronin?!" Tanaka cried upon seeing his childhood friend, comfortably sleeping under Shina Tomoe's care; and the Ronin's head, resting on Kenshin's.

"They're... asleep..." Nishinoya stooped down in front of Shina, staring at her catnap face, a blush forming on his cheeks finding how cute it is. Later it was clawed by Shina's palm that instinctively moved when she felt a familiar presence in front of her. "You were awake?!"

"I don't like it when people stare at me" Shina hissed, sending a glare at Nishinoya who froze in his spot.

"Wait - what happened?! And Shin-chan!" Tanaka reacted only to be shushed by Shina. "Don't be noisy, you'll wake her up" she said, carefully bringing Kenshin's head off her shoulders and carrying the older girl to give to Tanaka. "Bring her home, she's tired" she ordered, placing the petite Kenshin into Tanaka's arms to be carried back to her house.

"Ronin..." Tanaka was astonished. She watched over Shin-chan the whole time? He couldn't believe it and watched Shina with widened eyes as the girl stood in front of the elder's hospital room. The swordswoman pressed her forehead against the cold door, closing her eyes out of exhaustion.

"Ryu" Nishinoya called his fellow teammate. "Take Nagisa home. I'll take it from here" he patted the boy on the shoulders, smiling strongly. Tanaka hardened his stare with a nod before walking back home. He promised he'll come back to check up on the dear woman, Kodama, and sent regards to her.

Nishinoya was left with Shina as he watched the girl quietly crouched down, burying her head in her arms. "You should go home" were her words to him after a long silence.

Nishinoya gulped and was about to speak. "What about you-" "I'll be fine" she cut him off, raising her head to show a blank stare covering a pained expression. Nishinoya didn't buy it and stubbornly sat on the benches beside the hallways and just stared at Shina's back. "You're so stubborn, it's annoying" she commented, still awaiting for his leave; but the libero didn't budge and accompanied her through the silent hours, waiting for some miracle to happen or who knows what.

"If I'm stubborn then so are you. Why do you keep on lying about being fine?" Nishinoya asked; his eyes focused on Shina as she gradually joined his side.

"You know that I'm capable of, why do you keep on asking?" was Shina's reply as she tiredly closed her eyes once again. She was surprised when she felt Nishinoya's hand, gently pushing her head down to lean on his shoulder. For a second there she resisted the chance to rest, but knowing her, Nishinoya already pressed her head to stay on his shoulder. "At least once, can you not be stubborn right now? I know you're tired and I'm not letting you exhaust yourself by fighting" he stated, catching the girl off guard. Knowing fighting is unnecessary, for once, she listened to what the older school mate had told her, and rested to regain her strength.

Doctor Kenshin later went out of Gina's room, finding a cute scene of Shina cuddled with Nishinoya. The volleyball player let her borrow his jacket, blanketing her cold exhausted body that's been running around, fighting multiple men, and was used to dash off in high speed just to reach the hospital. Smiling on how the boy takes care of his short-time crush, he figured he should call Gina's home, hoping an adult would answer and come to the elder's aid.

In the meantime, Raiden Ryder just arrived at home, batted in sweat and several bruises and cuts marked his face. He slammed the door open, throwing his coat onto the old couch, before slouching on the bean bag in front of the TV. He was exhausted from fighting and the continuous ringing of their telephone wasn't helping in helping him get some rest as he closed his eyes for a moment. Growing irksome, Raiden pushed himself of the soft, comfortable chair, heading straight to their kitchen where the phone is. He picked up the handset to talk to whoever wanted to talk to one of the gangster's living in the house - or perhaps Gina who was out in the house.

"Hello?" he answered the call.

"Hi there, is there an adult in the house that I can talk to?" asked the one on the other line, who sounded like a man.

Raiden cocked an eyebrow. "One is speaking" he hinted, growing curious on the reason behind the call. "How may I help you?"

"Hello, sorry to disturb you in this late hour, but there seems to be an emergency" the man in the line informed Raiden making him grow alert. "Kodama Gina-san has collapsed this morning due to difficulty in breathing. We need an adult to go here as soon as possible please"

"Wait, Gina-san-?"

"Also, her granddaughter seems to be here with her boyfriend" Raiden's question was cut off as the man continued to talk. Wait, boyfriend? He pondered, Shina entering his mind and the one who proposed to her, Nishinoya. How on earth did he know about that? Shaking off the confusion forming in his mind, Raiden thanked the caller for the info and then hung up. After this, he wondered where his other mates had gone to and remembered that Nobuo and Kohaku are out with Tamotsu in helping him with his shop.

He figured it'll take time if he'd pass by Tamotsu to tell him about Gina, and didn't have any of the shop's number so he decided to head to the hospital first to see if everything's fine. Aside from Gina, he was also worried about Shina being in the hospital. The girl never had good memories there, and he was hoping by the time he gets there, she'd still have her mind working and not going crazy on all the staff, for she has a high percent chance on getting locked in an asylum.

He reached the hospital, by motor, and when he entered the building, he caught several eyes of civilians being in the same place as he is. Well he is the Raiden Ryder. And you don't normally see gangsters casually hanging out in the hospital for they could get in trouble by the officials if ever they found out about another fight that they hosted with other gangs.

Raiden went to the nurse station to ask about the old woman's whereabouts. "127? Thanks" He winked at the pretty nurse with a 'thank you' before going upstairs to search for Gina's room.

At the hallway, there greeted a sleeping Shina, her head rested on Nishinoya's lap as she stared at her face while comfortably stroking her red long hair. Raiden was actually quite surprised that Shina wasn't hysterically churning around to get out. Normally, she'll have to force her way out.

But not this time. Luckily her exhausted body didn't find the strength to freak out. Shina had a very damaging trauma during her time in her when she was a child. And since then, she never ever planned of going back. Today was an exception.

"You..." Raiden spoke, pointing a finger at Nishinoya who looked over at his direction with a questioning look. The older boy stared at him with outsized eyes. "How did you do that?"

Nishinoya blinked with furrowed eyebrows. "Do what?" he asked looking back at Shina. "She's tired so I'm letting her rest"

"But-Tomoe! She -" Raiden was quite in shock as he bent over to watch Shina in her deep slumber. Tomoe, are you going to be okay? "Yuu, can you take Tomoe home for now?" he requested out of nowhere, pulling out his phone to ring a bell to Nobuo.

Noya looked taken aback at the sudden favor before answering, "She's asleep! Are you expecting me to carry her all the way home?" he asked in disbelief.

"Sorta, yeah" Raiden answered nonchalantly with a shrug. "Here" he handed a paper with a written address on it, completely sticking to his words. He left Noya to go talk to someone on his phone, leaving the student with the responsibility of taking the girl home. Having no choice, Nishinoya did what he was told to do while questioning in his head, how on earth did Raiden know his first name?

Shina's house or headquarters was pretty far. It was in the same neighborhood as the sake shop where he first saw her as she saved him and his teammates from Toyo's gang. Few streets later, he finally reached an old looking traditional Japanese house that was scary enough to send chills down Nishinoya's spine. After gathering up the courage to enter, he gulped, pushing the almost broken gate open, stepping in the premises of the Red Ronin. Jittery astounded, Nishinoya hesitated to knock on the front door to check if anyone was home. Slowly, the door creaked open making his skin hair rise, or should we say goose bumps. The house looked like it was haunted; or perhaps it is. "Hello is anyone home?" he peeked, scanning around if there was any living being inside the house. There wasn't. As mentioned earlier, no one is at home. Unanswered, Nishinoya proceeded inside, carrying Shina on his back. Yes, he gave her a piggy-back ride home. He let her lay down on the couch since he doesn't know where her bedroom is located, and also afraid to go upstairs. He locked the front door in case some stranger barges in, leaving them helpless, with the Red Ronin's energy (for fighting) drained.

While his goddess was asleep, Noya thought of making some refreshments or even food for her after she woke up. He assumed Shina skipped through meals again, for the girl looks so pale and unfed. Without someone asking permission from, Nishinoya scrutinize through the cupboards and fridge of the Ronin's house to see if there were any food he can prepare for her. Only one caught his eye; a Tupperware sitting at the corner of the fridge he just opened; there three rice balls were preserved and were already readied to eat. He pulled it out to smell if it was still good to eat and smiled before ogling for a microwave to heat it up. Successfully he did it in a perfect time because once he was done; Shina was stirring in her spot, hinting that she was waking up.

Approaching her wasn't a good idea; the pillow thrown at his face said so. Shina isn't that much of a morning person, if we consider the almost evening hour, morning. "Hey, what was that for?" Noya removed the pillow from his face.

"The hell are you doing here?" was Shina's threatening response to him. She assembled herself anytime as she watched Noya disappear off to the kitchen, and then return with a platter of three rice balls in his hands. "What's that?"

"Obviously food. I heated them for you since you looked pretty hungry in your sleep" he says, placing the plate on the table in front of the swordswoman.

"You snooped around my house?" Shina conjectured, raising an eyebrow together with her fist. The boy flinched, immediately denying the accusation and explained himself starting from Raiden arriving at the hospital. "Raiden? He arrived at the hospital?" she realized, standing on her feet once again. 'I've got to go back...' she mumbled.

"What? No! Can't you see how exhausted you are! Stay and rest for the night!" Nishinoya scolded upon hearing Shina talk to herself. He blocked the door. "Rai-Raiden said so you have to listen!"

"Since when are you good terms with him? And Raiden saying that doesn't make any difference, I don't listen to him" Shina snarled, walking towards the door, ready to push Noya out of the way, which she did. As she was about to exit the house, someone hindered her way with by entering the same time she was to step out. It was Nobuo and Kohaku who just got home from Tamotsu's ramen shop.

"Ronin-san, where're you going?" Nobuo asked receiving a cold glare from his leader as he stepped aside, giving her way. There, Kohaku entered the building as well, wondering about the menacing look on Shina's face.

"Ronin-san, are you okay? Do you need me to get you a punching bag?" the boy asked, with grocery bags in his hands. Shina took notice of it and took the two plastics from Kohaku, bringing them to the kitchen wordlessly. "Ah, Ronin-san you don't need to - I can manage!"

"Just let her do it, you know how stubborn she is" Nobuo scolded him for protesting.

"But-" Kohaku tried to reason but decided to drop it. His eyes averted his eyes to Nishinoya who has a smaller height as than him even though he was three years younger than the high school lad. "Huh? We've got a guest Ronin-san? Is he a new recruit?"

"No, he's the punching bag" Ronin stated, coming back from the kitchen with a menacing aura dominating the atmosphere in the house. Both Noya and Nobuo can feel it except for the innocent 13 year old Kohaku.

"Eh? Ronin-san you know better than me that new recruits aren't supposed to be bullied... As far as I know, the only one you torture is Raiden-san..." he said with a sweat dropped. He gave Noya a kind smile and went closer to pat him on the head. "Don't worry little guy, Ronin-san won't hurt you. At first you'll think she's entirely cold-hearted person but she's not. To describe her, she's like ice cream. Cold but sweet" the simile Kohaku used didn't seem to please the Red Ronin at all but she tried her best not to get violent.

Noya on the other hand, popped a vein and slapped Kohaku's hand away from ruffling his hair. "Hey! I'm not a little kid! I'm already in 2nd year high school!" he hollered with an annoyed expression.

Kohaku backed away with his jaw dropped upon the shocking truth since Nishinoya was 13 cm smaller than him. Even Nobuo was surprised and didn't believe him at first and asked Shina for confirmation, "Ronin, is this true?" her nod was to conclude that Nishinoya was indeed in his 2nd year.

"So-Sorry about that! Crap, you're older than me I should've known..." Kohaku muttered the last part to himself before bowing in plea. "Sorry! Um - Uh, I don't even know your name but, I deeply apologize for the misunderstanding!"

"Wait, you're so short, how're you recruited?" Nobuo raised his eyebrow skeptically.

"Stop with my height already!" Nishinoya shouted.

"I told you" Shina spoke up walking closer to Noya from behind before clawing his whole head with her hand. "He's a punching bag"

"As if!" Nishinoya backed away from her. Shina clicked her tongue at him before shoving them off her way to exit the house and go back the hospital. Before she could do that, Noya already grabbed her arm, pulling her back. "You're not going back to the hospital"

"You're going to stop me?" Shina attempted to scare him with her usual glare but this time, Nishinoya didn't budge from his spot and gave an intent stare at her. He actually stopped getting frightened.

"Wait, why is Ronin going back to the hospital?" Kohaku asked wondrously. Shina stiffened that Noya felt making him look at her uneasy posture. The Ronin knows Gina and Kohaku share a close relationship. She didn't know what he'll react if ever he finds out about the grandmother figure he had. Even Shina didn't complain about Kohaku treating Gina as a real grandma, she considered him like a brother to him, and deeply cared for his feelings.

Nishinoya glanced at Kohaku, not answering him, since he knows Shina should be the one telling him; and telling them; her whole crew. Instead of telling the truth, Shina lied using her wounds as a cover up in visiting Gina at the hospital again. "I'm going to get my wounds treated, you two stay here" she ordered before running out of the house, escaping from Noya's grasps.

"Oi, Shi-Shina! Wait up!" Nishinoya yelled, chasing after her.

Staring at them for a while, an imaginary light bulb appeared above Nobuo's head as he lightly hit his palm with his fist with an 'I got it' look. "I remembered him now. That guy was the one who proposed to Ronin-san during her fight with Toyo" he recalled, looking at Kohaku. He was also the guy Ronin asked me to guard. Though I never saw his face up close so I didn't recognize him...

"T-Toyo?! Wai-Wait, that was the guy?! So his name would be Nishinoya-san!" Kohaku realized, receiving a curious look from Nobuo who furrowed his eyebrows.

"How did you know his name?" he inquired.

"Ah, Raiden-san told me about him. He says that guy's name is Nishinoya Yuu, and apparently has a liking towards Ronin" Kohaku explained.

"Raiden? How does he know his name?"

"Who knows?" the boy shrugged and went to put away the groceries they bought.

"I guess there's no stopping you huh" Nishinoya spoke as he walked a few feet behind Ronin. The girl ignored him and fastened up her pace in going to the hospital, eager to see if Gina's okay. "Hey, can I ask you something at least?"

"If it's the way to shut you up, go ahead" She snarled with venom on her tone but Noya paid no mind.

"That guy Ryan, I think that's his name, was pretty shocked when he saw you relaxed at the hospital when you... you-you w-we-r-ee, le-leani-ning on m-me... and asked how I did that..." Nishinoya started, remembering the scene inside his head with a flustered look. "I was wondering why though..." with that, it made Shina stop walking while staring stoically at the ground with her fist gripping tightly. Nishinoya stopped as well.

"When I was ten years old, both I and my mother were involved in some accident and was urgently rushed to the hospital. During that time, My mom was in the operating room because her body was severely... injured, while I was in the emergency room with the nurses trying to keep up my breathing" Shina closed her eyes with the experience she was recollecting. This is the first time she'd ever had a flashback in her mind. She lifted up her head to look at the sky, trying to calm herself down with the memory. "I could still remember the tightening of my chest, the shutdown of my limbs and the blurry sight that I had because of the tears swelling up my eyes. I felt like I was trapped in the line whether I should be alive or dead, it was really painful"

Nishinoya felt the change of air and regretted having to ask that, if it were to brought back something bad or painful. He was about to speak to tell her it's okay to not tell him but Shina continued to talk. "Apparently, I survived because here I am as a wreck. But unfortunately, my mother didn't. After I was in comma for four days, I awoke with Gina by my side with a relieved smile on her face, but I was able to read that there was something behind that... three days I was in the hospital, confined, I was able to ask Gina where my mother was. And that's when I found out... she didn't make it"

Shina turned around and grabbed Noya's arm which was about to reach out to her. "Don't feel sorry for me okay? I moved on already. I know I can't bring back my mother back with my drama so I won't be like other weaklings who'll cry over their dead loved ones for years and never get over it. Well, differently from them, I did. I'm actually quite relieved that she's not suffering from living anymore. She deserves peace, I'm happy that she's resting so don't feel sorry for that. I don't like sympathy, it's the last thing I need" she spat, yanking Noya's arm away.

"I don't know why the reason why I'm telling you this is but to answer your questions, after that event of my life, I've been having panic attacks whenever I smell the scent of the hospital. It makes me sick and feel suffocated whenever the smell enters my nostrils so I don't really like going to that place much often"

Nishinoya was at awe and didn't manage to speak except for the words, "You're amazing" Shina was taken aback and annoyed at the same time. She hated the fact that Nishinoya always do and say things that she doesn't expect and it irritates her.

"What?" Shina twitched an eye.

"You're not like those girls who are vulnerable. You're strong and can stand up for yourself. All this time, I thought of you as a gang leader acting to be strong for her comrades, but there so much more than that" Nishinoya blabbered. "You're so cool, I think I like you even more now-"

"Shut up" Shina send a strong punch at the face again and yelled at him. "Go home, fucker! I don't need your praise! Of course I have to be strong in life! You can't be weak all the time you know! Fucking annoying brat! I'll give you a reason for following me to the hospital!"

"What? You're going to hurt me again!"

"Glad to see you know that! Come here you little shit!"

And then again, Noya triggered her anger issues, and ended up running away from her and reaching the hospital faster than expected. He ushered in the hospital with Ronin by his tail and quietly entered room 127, shushing Shina when she caught with him.

"Stupid little..." she growled. Both of them entered the room to see Raiden watching over a sleeping Gina.

Noya smiled at Shina and pushed her back, towards her grandmother. "Go on, you can repay her by being by her side when she wakes up" he grinned with a thumbs up. "She was there when you woke, right?"

Despite hating to admit it, but Shina found his words encouraging, and noticed his charm. She nodded her head and went to side by Gina's side, taking the woman's hand in hers. Raiden smirked at her and winked at Noya with his thumbs up.
