It was 11:30pm when my alarm went off, signalling it was time for me to get ready to sneak out. I was wearing my dad's Iron Maiden shirt, a pair of black leggings and a black SnapBack. Slipping on my batman converse, I tiptoed down the stairs. I know, it would've made more sense to put my shoes on after I'd done creeping around. I left a note on my pillow, just in case dad woke up to find me gone. He'd at least know I hadn't been kidnapped. It just said 'gone cycling, couldn't sleep. Be back ASAP - cas'. I doubted dad would be too worried anyway, I'm a big girl. I can look after myself,
I yawned as I closed the door quietly. I'd left my bike out earlier instead of putting it back in the garage like I usually did. I put my rucksack with a banana, a torch, a big jumper and my phone inside on my back, and jumped on my bike. Then, I started cycling to the skatepark.
It was harder to get my bearings right, at night. I usually took a shortcut through town down some creepy country lane, but at almost 12am, I didn't thing this would be a good idea. So I took the direct route, round the outskirts of town and then down the market street. It would be safer. Even though my town isn't dangerous and riddled with druggies, you still get the occasional idiot who thinks it's funny to spray paint a penis on someone's wall.
It was all going smoothly until I got to a street with no street lamps. I had to get off my bike and walk down it, purely because it was safer and I could feel for the curbs. One of the last houses in the street had an upstairs light on, so I headed for that. I stared at the window, trying to locate where any bumps and potholes would be in the road. As I got closer, I saw a boy standing up against the window.
He was facing the other side of the street so he couldn't see me. I walked closer to his house, staring up at him, and not looking where I was going. This resulted in me walking straight into a car parked at the side of the road. I swore loudly as my bike crashed to the ground. Checking myself for any bumps, I looked back up at the boy who'd heard the sound. He looked pretty creeped out and was staring out of his window.
I waved at him even though he wouldn't be able to see me, jumped back on my bike and cycled off, not caring about feeling for the dangers anymore. He grinned and I rode past his house; his room light must've illuminated me. He stuck his hand up and smiled. It took me about 15 more minutes to get to the park. I couldn't get out of my head how idiotic I'd been, riding into a parked car. Who does that? Oh well, it's not like I get out much.
I opened the gate to the park, which got closed, but not locked, at night. I hadn't thought about the possibility of it being locked, but I suspected it wouldn't be because because of what that Luke boy had mentioned about his friend coming here at night. I turned on some rap song Jules had put on my phone ages ago, back when she still lived with us. One thing I've never inherited off my sisters is a love for music. I've never had a need for it; sport is my main distraction.
I nodded along to the song, the beat was pretty slow and the chorus was actually sung. Usually I didn't like rap music, if I was going to listen to music I'd listen to 80's pop rock. I couldn't be bothered to switch the song over. Besides, it wasn't that bad. It talked about drugs a lot, but what song doesn't these days? Wow, that made me sound old.
I started doing laps around the skate park on my bike, gradually building up speed before going up one of the smaller ramps. I was so lost in what I was doing that I almost didn't notice two boys walk through the park. I slowed down when I neared them, almost bumping into one of them.
"The fuck you doing? Mind where you're going dude," the taller one said. I couldn't see their faces but they sounded scary. I doubted either of them were the Michael and Ashton people Luke had talked about. Still, it couldn't hurt to ask.
"Um, so either of you know a Michael or an Ashton?" I asked nervously, side stepping off my bike and walking a little closer to them. For some reason, the fact I was speaking to two complete strangers at midnight wasn't scaring me. I was so tired my brain had turned to a bit of an unlogical mush.
"I'm Michael," the same boy spoke, sounding confused. "Why? How do you know my name?"
"Your friend came by the park a few hours ago, asking about you. He was a bit drugged up on painkillers because his face had been smashed in. He asked me to keep an eye out for you if I came out, so that's what I'm doing."
"Wait," the other boy spoke. "Are you a girl?"
I frowned, confused. "Yes...?"
"Then what are you doing at a skate park? On a BMX?" Michael sneered.
I frowned at their ignorance. I was used to idiotic boys thinking I couldn't participate in certain sports simply because I was a girl. Stupid stereotypes. I just glared at the two boys even though they couldn't see me. I jumped back on my bike and backed up, ready to go up the biggest ramp.
"This," I said sharply. I pedalled as hard as I could and I honestly felt as though I could fly. I easily reached the top, pulling my brakes and laying my bike next to me as I sat on the ramp. 'You should come up here, it's lovely!"
Seconds later, the two boys were up on the ramp. I rolled my eyes because they were on skateboards and it was easy to do the ramps on skateboards. We sat in silence for a while, before the smaller boy, who I presumed was Ashton, pulled one of my ear buds out and put it in his own ear, and began bobbing up and down to the song. The rap song had long finished, and all my favourite 80's tracks were coming on. Rock You Up by The Romantics was the song Ashton was jamming to.
"You like the romanics?" I asked uncertainly, and Michael squealed.
"Put it on loudspeaker!" He screamed at me, and I did as I was told. To be completely honest, if he'd told me to throw myself off the ramp I would've. I was scared shitless.
The two boys started singing along to the song, and Ashton even did a little bit of the Macarena to it. I laughed lightly. A few minutes ago they'd been discriminating me because I was a girl and now they were rocking out to my music. When it finished i clicked on my favourites playlist and shuffled it. Simple Minds came on, and we sat again and listened to the steady beat.
"Your friends face was pretty fucked up," I told Michael. Honestly, I was just trying to start a conversation. I was more than a little uncomfortable with the fact we were just three strangers sitting listening to my music. "What happened?"
Michael inhaled sharply, and Ashton scooted over to him and out his arm around him.
"I don't think that's any of your business, princess."
"Sorry," I muttered. "I was just asking. He said he got in a fight because of you, I just-"
"He said what?" Michael's voice faltered, and Ashton pulled his friend closer to him. "He- he... ok."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I'm not used to being around people much so I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do in a situation like this..." I trailed off.
"Usually you say sorry then give the person you upset a hug," Ashton told me helpfully. "How come you don't get out much?"
"Homeschooled," I muttered bitterly.
"Like Calum!" Ashton said to Michael, and he nodded,
"Calum? The one with the shitty car, right?" I asked.
Michael laughed. "How do you know Calum?"
"He came to pick that Luke kid up."
"Oh." Michael twiddled his fingers and detached himself from Ashton. "So, what's your name? You know ours."
"I'm Cassidy, or, er, Cas," I shrugged. "Whichever."
An alarm went off, and the two boys got up, brushed themselves off, and looked at each other.
"Same time, same place, tomorrow?" Ashton asked me.
I looked at him. "Why not?"
"Good good. We'll see you around, Cas," Michael grinned and they skated down the ramp, across the park and out of the gates. I took my backpack off and took my banana out, peeling it and taking a bite. I couldn't help but look forward to seeing those two boys tomorrow.
I mean, I don't get out much. This is the most excitement I've ever had in my life.
