I wouldn't have gone into Calum's house, but I was desperate. I'm also quite a nosy person, but let's not mention that. We walked into the living room and it was freezing cold. Calum swore, and ran into the kitchen, presumably to turn the heating on, and the air con off.

"So," Calum said awkwardly, passing me a cup of coffee I didn't realise he'd made. "What do you want to do?"

"I don't really know," I muttered, suddenly shy. It had just hit me I was in some randomer's house. He could be a murderer for all I knew.

"Ok," it was silent for a moment. "Um, why are you homeschooled?"

"My mum thought I'd get a better education," I said. "I don't live with her, my parents are divorced and my dad got custody of me and my sisters. They're all old enough to live where they want, but I still have to live with dad and visit my mum every other weekend. I'm supposed to be visiting this weekend but my stepbrother's got some concert thing so I've been blown off. Anyway, if I want to go to a 'proper school' I have to go live with mum. What about you?"

Calum blushed. "You're probably going to run away when you here this, but ok. I, erm, hospitalised a teacher? My parents are divorced too, not many people knew at school and my teacher was poking his nose in because of some project about happy families and I didn't want to participate because I don't exactly know what a happy family is, do I? My mum's single, well at least I think, and I've never met my dad's family because he lives in America. I thought it would be inappropriate for me to share my views. But he just kept pushing me, so I lashed out. And I'm honestly not the kind of person to do that, I swear. It was so weird..." He trailed off, looking at me wearily.

I shrugged. "Sounds like he deserved it. Before my parents broke up, when I went to normal school, this kid kept calling me a boy and saying I shouldn't be doing sports, so I punched him. Kind of a similar thing, except I only got suspended. I'm guessing you got like, full on excluded?"

"Yeah," he admitted sheepishly. "Permanent exclusion. My mum went crazy."

"I bet she did," I laughed. "Hey, do you want to watch spongebob or something?"

His face lit up. "Yeah!"

He grabbed the remote and flicked the channels until he got to Nickelodeon. We sat and watched really old episode reruns, until his home phone started ringing. He motioned for me to be quiet when the person started to leave a message.

"Calum? It's me. I'm sorry I'm out again, you know how it is. But you're a big boy, you can look after yourself. How did boxing get on? I'll speak to you tomorrow, I should be back. If I'm not, it's little Lorrie's christening tomorrow, and we're not going. When Auntie Lorraine rings, tell her you're sick. Oh, and your dad wants you to call him tomorrow, don't let him hang up like last time, little bugger. Anyway, I'll speak to you tomorrow Cal, love you." The person, who I presumed was his mother, hung up.

"I wanted to go to that Christening," he mumbled, and I smirked it him.

"Do you not get along well with your mum?" I asked.

"No, I mean, I kind of treat her like shit. But at the same time, I feel she deserves it because she's the one who kicked dad out, and she's the one who's never here. Dad almost never forgets to call, mum almost always forgets to even cook dinner."

"I know the feeling," I admitted. "I really dislike my mum, she calls me out about stupid shit that doesn't even matter, like the fact I need a haircut or that I should wear more make up. I go round her house and all she does is compare me to my step siblings. It's like, I only make the effort because if I didn't, I'd have to live there permanently. And I'd hate that."

"Yeah-" Calum began, but was interrupted by a loud bang.

I shrieked, which made Calum shriek then swear. I slid down off the sofa and onto the floor, breathing heavily. Calum followed. He shuffled closer to me, and wrapped himself in a blanket before offering me half which I gladly took. After about two minutes, he edged up back onto the sofa, leaving me on the floor. He picked up his phone and turned the flashlight app on, and walked into the kitchen.

Moments later, Calum came back in with an annoyed look on his face.

"The fucking air con heating thing's bust," he said, sighing dramatically. "It's going to be absolutely freezing. Holy shit, it'll be like a freezer upstairs, it's always colder upstairs than downstairs."

"Our heating always breaks," I said smoothly, getting up from the floor. "Get as many duvets as you can, and we'll sleep downstairs tonight. Wait, can I sleep here? Oh God, that sounded rude, I meant-"

"Yeah, that's what I meant when I invited you in," he laughed. "I'll go and get the duvets."

I stayed downstairs whilst Calum went upstairs. His house was nice; small but nice. I guess he didn't need a very big house if it was just him and his mum, did he? His mum had nice taste, the decor was modern and very well put together.

"I've got like, five sheets," Calum said, giggling. "Sorry about those two-" he gestured to a power rangers cover, then to a teenage mutant ninja turtles one, "they're from when I was younger. We don't bother to replace stuff unless it's broken, usually."

I was about to answer, but a knock at the door stopped me. I knew it was Michael and Ashton, due to the fact they opened the letter box and started yelling for calum to answer the door. He sighed and did as he was told. The two boys walked into the living room, yelling my name and trying to hug me. I'm pretty sure Michael actually tried to grope my boob, but we'll look past that.

They're were obviously drunk, or high, or both. Calum rolled his eyes, and began singing 'why do you only call me when you're high?' by Arctic Monkeys. I actually know Arctic Monkeys, they're Rachel's favourite band. I joined in with him, and Ashton started doing a little dance whilst Michael tripped over a duvet.

"We need Lu-Luke's phone number," Michael said, slurring his words a little. He was definitely less with it that Ashton.

"Are you two high?" I cooed.

"A little," Ashton smiled at me sheepishly.

Unfortunately, Rachel hasn't always been a 'good girl' and she used to get high and drunk frequently. I used to help her hide from dad. I'm used to the state they were in, it wasn't scaring me. It seemed to be the same with Calum, so I expected they did this to him often.

"Luke's number?" Calum said suspiciously. "When are you going to tell me what's going on between you two?"

"Never, but Luke will soon. I'll go round now and get him to tell you," Michael stood up, stumbled, and headed for the door.

"No no no, Michael, not a good idea," Ashton grabbed his taker friend by the arm and pushed him onto the pile of quilts. "I think we should crash here tonight, and ring Luke in the morning, ok?"

Michael nodded, and was asleep in minutes. Rachel used to take ages getting to sleep after doing whatever she used to do, so that surprised me. He snuggled up to Ashton's shoulder. I was wedged awkwardly between Ashton and Calum. Calum layer his head on my chest, and snuggled up. I must've drifted off to sleep after that, because I don't remember much else.

I woke up to angry whispering and for a moment I forgot where I was. I opened one eye and saw Calum arguing with a woman who looked a lot like him. I nudged Ashton, who groaned loudly and rolled over to face me.

"What?" He hissed. I nodded towards the arguing and his eyes widened. he shook Michael awake.

"For fuck's sake!" Michael yelled, and everyone, including Calum and who I presumed was his mother, stared at him. "Holy shit, sorry, carry on."

"Michael," Mrs Hood stared at Michael. She looked at Ashton expectingly. It was silent for a few moments, before ashton cleared his throat awkwardly and bit his lip.

"Oh, um, I'm Ashton." He said nervously, and she nodded before turning to me.

"I'm Cassidy," I looked at the ground.

Calum's mum smiled slightly at us both then turned and began arguing with Calum again. Ashton grabbed my wrist and pulled me up. I realised he was trying to tell me it would be a good idea to go, so we snuck out of the door. Michael put Calum's number in my phone, and I made my way home.
