CH 1: Sleepy meadows (edited)
"Hey Gil promise you won't do anything stupid for me."
"Of course! I promise."
A gush of wind blew through the quiet city, leaves rustled against their frail branches, the grass swayed calmly in the breeze, and far off in a nature-filled meadow lied an albino name Gilbert. His eyes were closed as he listened to the many sounds around him. He listened to the melody of chirps from birds, the sound of rustling branches and leaves, and the soft raspy breath of his lover beside him.
He smiled and turned on his side to examine his sleeping lover, he adored his slim figure and golden locks of hair, and his eyes were like glittering purple gems. And seeing him asleep made Gilbert love him a lot more, but the relaxing moment was disrupted when his wristwatch beeped signaling him that time had run out, he frowned in annoyance and guiltily shook his lover's frail shoulder. "Matthew it's time to wake up." He cooed quietly with a gentle smile. "Come on birdie."
Matthew slowly stirred awake and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. "Gil...I'm sorry I fell asleep." He apologized groggily and sat up. "Don't apologize, from the dark circles under your eyes I could tell that you really needed it." He stood up from the comfortable grass and stretched until he heard his stiff joints pop. "Besides...I think you looked adorable." He chuckled.
Matthew blushed in embarrassment and looked down. "I-I didn't." He protested. "Oh come on, would the awesome me ever lie?" Gilbert asked with a toothy grin. "Now come on, times almost up." He lifted Matthew into his arms bridal style. "G-Gil!" Matthew fearfully clung onto him. "You're too light Mattie, you have to eat more," Gilbert explained in a worried tone.
Matthew guiltily hid his face in the crook of his neck. "...I do, it just comes back up.," he mumbled. "Well the awesome me will make sure you eat properly," Gilbert reassured and walked to his car. "Why are you with me? I mean you know what could happen.." the quiet Canadian frowned causing Gilbert to hold him tighter. "Birdie I'm with you because I fell in love with you and I promised that I would save you."
Matthew was hesitant but nodded. "Okay...but if you get hurt because of me I will never forgive myself." He stated and Gilbert frowned knowing that whatever Matthew said was always true, he swallowed the lump in his throat as the heavy dreadful feeling in his chest made it harder for him to breathe and concentrate. "So birdie what do you want to eat when we get home?" he asked, trying to change the subject.
Matthew hummed in thought. "How about pancakes?" he suggested with a wide smile which made Gilbert's heart flutter with joy and happiness, seeing his lover smile was the best thing ever. "Of course birdie! Anything for you." He placed a kiss on his forehead and spun around causing Matthew to giggle. "G-Gil I'm getting dizzy!" he exclaimed and held onto him tightly trying not to fall.
Gilbert chuckled and stopped spinning. "You have the most perfect smile birdie, almost as awesome as mine!" he set him down on the ground and held his pale delicate hand in his own. "You think you can walk?" he asked, Matthew smiled reassuringly. "I'm not that sick Gil." He joked with a small giggle. "I know, I just worry a lot," Gilbert stated. "Besides it's my job to worry about you." He ran his thumb across Matthew's knuckles and brought his hand to his lips causing him to blush brightly.
He brought his hand down. "You're my beautiful little angel. It was a miracle that I was able to fall in love with such a perfect person." By now Matthew was a blushing and stuttering mess. "W-well I was lucky to have such an awesome person notice me...I'm happy we fell in love.." he looked at Gilbert with tear-filled eyes making them glitter like shiny amethyst. A small smile was spread on his face as a single tear made its way down his flushed cheek.
Gilbert stopped in his tracks, his car only a few feet away, he swiped his thumb across his lover's cheek to wipe away the stray tear. "Birdie what's wrong?" he asked worriedly, seeing his lover in tears was always the worst thing ever. Matthew giggled quietly as he wiped away the remaining tears that had formed in his eyes. "It's nothing it's just...I mean...after so many years of being unnoticed, you were the miracle that changed my whole life." He sniffled happily.
Gilbert froze before he met Matthew he never really knew how emotions worked. He didn't even know how love felt like, he was always engulfed within his huge ego not caring about the others around him but himself. Well that all changed when he met Matthew, when he first laid eyes on him it felt as if a gush of cold icy air hit him in the face..so quick yet very refreshing and causing a slight ache in his chest. And seeing the air tank that stood beside him made him love him instantly at first sight. He knew he had to be with him.
Gilbert quickly shook his head to clear his mind and brought his attention back to Matthew who was looking at him in concern. "You changed my life too birdie." He stated with a toothy grin. "Now let's go home okay? Times running out and we still need to make your pancakes." Matthew lit up at the mention of pancakes. "Well let's get going then!" he exclaimed excitedly.
~~~[time skip]~~~
After returning home the sun at the verge of setting and Gilbert helped Matthew put on his air tubes that belonged to a lime green air tank with wheels, he began the batter for the pancakes Matthew sneaked behind him rolling the tank with him with a sly smile. He stood on his toes and placed his hands over Gilbert's eyes. "Guess who." he giggled. "We're literally the only people living here birdie," Gilbert stated.
"Besides, I heard you when you snuck up behind me. But you shouldn't be surprised, when you have ears like someone as awesome as me it's almost impossible to sneak and scare me." He boasted with a laugh. "You're no fun, Gil." Matthew pouted and removed his hands from Gilbert's eyes. "What are you saying? I'm always fun." He exclaimed turning around with a bowl full of pancake batter and placed a kiss on Matthew's nose.
"You know that too don't you birdie~" He chuckled with a mischievous grin before winking at him and walking towards the stove. "W-what's that supposed t-to mean!?" Matthew stammered with a dark blush. "Oh, you know exactly what I mean," Gilbert stated and began to make pancakes. "Hey, when did you start making pancakes all of a sudden?" Matthew frowned as he made his way toward his mischievous lover.
Gilbert hummed in thought. "I don't know...maybe it's because I want to try something new?" he said in a sarcastic tone. "...you better not burn them," Matthew warned. "Relax birdie, I've seen you make them a bunch of times before. I even read the instructions which is very rare." Matthew giggled at the thought of seeing his boyfriend reading the mix box upside down. "I hope you read it right." He exclaimed.
When the pancakes were done Matthew rolled his air tank under the dining room table and sat on his chair with a plate of pancakes in front of him. "Eat up birdie, you're all skin and bones and it's really worrying me." Gilbert sat next to him with his own plate and poured syrup on the fluffy cakes before handing the bottle to his lover who was glaring at the bottle with excitement shimmering in his light violet eyes.
He chuckled as he poured the syrup on his pancakes almost drowning them with the sweet substance, and with the bottle half empty he happily ate. After they were done and Gilbert finished washing the dishes he sat on the living room couch with Matthew leaning against his shoulder, his slim fingers twirled around his clear air tubes that were connected to the tank that stood on the ground.
"...hey Gil...am I weird for being the way I am?" he asked quietly. "What!? Of course not!" Gilbert stated and brought Matthew on his lap making sure that the tubes didn't tangle, he then looked into Matthew's eyes as he held his face in his hands. "To be honest...I fell in love with you because I loved the way you were. And I still do." He rubbed his pale cheek and ran his hand through his silky blonde hair. "I love the way you are. You should too my birdie because you're perfect."
He placed a kiss on his soft pink lips and held him close, he pulled away with a soft smile as he pressed their foreheads together. "I love you, Matthew." He repeated quietly. "I love you too Gilbert." Matthew smiled with a bright pink blush, he then rested his head against his shoulder his eyes drooping tiredly. "Don't tell me you're sleepy already. Stay awake for a while, let's watch a movie." Gilbert suggested carefully setting Matthew down on the couch and got up from the couch only to trip over the air tank that stood by him.
He landed on the ground with a harsh thump and groaned as he rubbed the back of his head. "G-Gil! I'm so sorry, it was my fault!" Matthew apologized guiltily as he quickly helped him up from the ground. "It's okay birdie, it's like my fifth time tripping over it. Are you okay though?" Gilbert asked worriedly as he set up the tank upright and adjusted the tubes. "I'm fine," Matthew reassured with a weak smile.
Gilbert sighed in relief and kissed the top of his head. "Thank goodness, I'm so glad you're not hurt." Matthew frowned, he wasn't the one that fell, Gilbert was and there he was asking if he was alright even though he himself had fallen harshly possibly twisting his ankle. "Are you sure you're okay?" Matthew asked. "I'm fine, nothing can harm you when you're awesome!" he stated proudly.
Matthew slightly smiled and sat back down on the couch making sure to move his tank beside the arm of the couch so Gilbert wouldn't trip over it again. "I must be troublesome to him.." he glumly whispered to himself as he looked down at his hands. "What movie would you like to watch?" Gilbert asked. "I don't want to watch anything scary... let's watch a Disney movie!" Matthew smiled trying to shake off the glum feeling.
Gilbert grabbed a random Disney movie and set the disc in the DVD player, he sat back down with Matthew placing him on his lap and watched the movie which turned out to be 'The Lion King' he groaned knowing that there'd be tears shed, not from Matthew but himself since the saddest scene always brought him to tears. Matthew giggled and rested his head against Gilbert's shoulder, drowsiness began to set in but he forced himself to stay awake to comfort Gilbert when the sad part of the movie would come.
It eventually did and his boyfriend's sniffles alarmed him, he sat up and placed a kiss on his cheek. "It's okay Gil, it's only a movie." He cooed jokingly with a gentle smile. "Why does every Disney movie make people cry!?" he exclaimed, Matthew wrapped his arms around his neck and hugged him in a comforting manner. "I don't know Gil, maybe Disney magic is made out of people's tears?" he quietly laughed. "Disney is horrible but I love it!" he hugged Matthew and squeezed him.
Matthew smiled and once he was sure that his boyfriend was alright he drifted off to sleep, his tubes being cut off of air as they pressed against Gilbert's chest as he still embraced Matthew, Gilbert froze when he felt Matthew go limp in his arms. He pulled him away from the strong embrace and stood up from the couch carefully carrying Matthew bridal style, he turned off the TV and then lifted up the tank and went to their room.
He placed Matthew on the bed and removed the tubes, he frowned once he saw a faint red line imprinted on his pale face that started from his upper lip and stretched across both of his cheeks. He switched the uncomfortable looking tubes with a simple air mask that belonged to a machine that rested on the nightstand near the bed, he sighed and changed into a pair of shorts and a simple black T-shirt before lying on the bed with Matthew who changed into a red maple leaf sweater and a pair of maple leaf imprinted shorts with matching socks when they arrived home.
And once again Gilbert found himself observing his sleeping lover, his mind wandered as he fiddled with the air mask he wore. Matthew had a sickness, his lungs were fragile and weak which is where the air masks and tubes come, his lungs couldn't collect enough oxygen like normal people he couldn't run or his lungs would collapse on him which would put his life in danger. And Gilbert being the 'awesome person who ever lived' knew that no matter what, he would forever love him.
He frowned, Matthew always grew tired so easily maybe it was the lack of strength or the effort it took for him to breathe but it always worried him, he sometimes wondered how it would be like if he lived in Matthew's shoes for a day would it be hard and tiring? Would it ache every cough he took, would it feel like thick muck in his throat as he desperately tried to regain breath?
He shook the thoughts from his mind and softly held his hand, he lifted the sleeve of Matthew's red sweater and traced thousands of faint scars that were made years ago. Gilbert couldn't help but sigh in relief, Matthew was no longer hurting himself the scars showed the many battles he fought. But now with Gilbert with him, he was sure that he was now safe from any harm, but as the days passed more obstacles would have to be conquered.
Gilbert once again heaved a sigh, he closed his ruby red eyes trying to catch up on his sleep because he knew...
Tomorrow would be another day.
