Chapter 8

Madoka wandered around in the dark, suddenly very scared.

"Homura-chan?" She called out into the darkness, "Homu-oof!" She gasped out, tripping over something and landing with a heavy thump onto the ground.

"Madoka?" A voice whispered. Looking up, Madoka saw a figure in the darkness, too dark to be made up, but the glow of a purple soul gem confirmed her hopes.

"Homura-chan!" Madoka cried out happily, scrambling to her feet, and running towards Homura.

"No." Madoka stopped running abruptly, pausing uncertainly.

"W-why?" Homura's face came into view, as she walked closer. Her face showed nothing, but her anger, and sadness broke through her voice.

"How do I know you haven't been sent to spy on me? No-one trusts me, and I have heard them all make a vow to kill me on sight. How would I know you haven't?" Madoka was shocked.

"But Homura-chan, I'm your frie-"

"They were all my friends, but look at how each one of them hate me now."

"You have to save everyone, please! I know you didn't kill Mami without a reason, please you can turn back time right? Please, go back in time and stop me from becoming magical girl for a reason like this!"

You can turn back time right? Please, go back in time and stop me from becoming a magical girl.

"I'm sorry, Madoka," Homura's voice was husky and choked, "You heard Kyubey. I can't turn back time, not like this! We're trapped Madoka! Trapped! This will never end until-until most of us die." Homura began to break down, sinking to her knees. Madoka rushed towards her, kneeling down and wrapping her arms around the distraught Homura.

"But... I had a plan," Homura whispered, "I'll win this, and get back to Earth. There, I will turn back time, and we can get to where we were before Kyubey brought us here."

Madoka felt a small surge of hope rise inside her.

"Do you think you could?" She asked Homura hopefully, "Is it really possible?"

"No," Homura whispered, "I thought about it. To go back in time, I have to go backwards, reliving every moment backwards, it means I have to travel back through this place, and it's not connected to Earth so it won't work! I thought I was doing the right thing, but now, I realised I have made a mistake, and I killed -I killed... Mami." The last part came out in a whisper. Madoka suddenly felt sorry for her, wishing she could do something to help relieve Homura of her burden.

"Maybe I should make a wish," Madoka whispered, "I could wish-"

"No, Madoka," The chill in Homura's voice was evident, "Don't you dare form a contract, don't become a magical girl, and never suffer the deepest despair."

"B-but-"

"I said, no," Homura turned to face Madoka, "Or my life would be to no point."

Again. They're always telling me not to become a magical girl. Why not? I don't care if I turn into a witch, I want to help, I want to bring hope to the world, I want to let everyone know I'm there for them. Maybe I should just make a contract when they're not there. That way, I won't be a burden, I hate being a burden.

"Madoka?" Homura asked Madoka, breaking her out of her thoughts. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," Madoka looked at Homura. "I'm fine."

Homura seemed to sigh. Turning around, she walked back into the darkness, her purple soul gem glowing like a lantern.

"I know where we can camp for the night."
