Chapter 4
Kyoko opened her eyes, only to find herself sitting in a chair, on a slightly raised platform. Looking around, she saw all the other puella magi, including Madoka, sitting in an identical chair, on the same kind of platform, arranged in a wide circle. None of them looked happy.
In the middle of the circle, grief seeds dotted the grass, some of them so close to Kyoko that she could make out some of the runes on them. Ellie, Scarlet, Griselda, they were all witches she had defeated, and they had taken no effort at all, virtually. Kyubey's voice spoke in their minds, but the fluffy incubator was nowhere to be seen.
"You must wait 60 seconds until you can get off the platform. Otherwise, you will be blown apart, and not even your magic can save you. In the middle of your circle, you will see grief seeds. You may have those grief seeds, and one of them especially, is Walpurgisnacht's. This grief seed is especially powerful, because, it can be used forever. It will never hatch, no matter how much taint from your soul gems you place in it. It is every Puella Magi for hersel-"
"Wait a second!" Sayaka shouted, from her seat, "Madoka isn't a Puella Magi!"
Kyubey's voice paused.
"Well then, she'll have to make a contact wouldn't she?" Madoka gasped. Sayaka glared up at the sky angrily.
"She can choose if she wants to, not get forced into it."
"We are letting her choose, but if she gets killed because she didn't want to contract, it's her fault." Kyoko groaned inwardly, trust Kyubey to be so cruel about it.
"It's okay, Madoka," Sayaka called to Madoka, who was opposite her. "Just stick with me, and I will protect you." Madoka looked horrified.
"It's okay, Sayaka, I will have to-"
"You have 10 seconds," Kyubey's voice interrupted in their minds,"9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1." A loud horn blasted and Kyoko jumped up, off her chair, everyone else doing the same, including Madoka.
"May the odds be ever in your favour," Kyubey's voice whispered in their minds. Kyoko knelt down and hastily grabbed the grief seeds closest to her. She looked up at Walpurgisnacht's grief seed, which was right in the middle of the circle. Should she risk it? She could just get it, and she wouldn't need to kill any more witches.
Jumping up, Kyoko ran, transforming a she ran, ready to fight anyone for the grief seed. All the other Puella Magi seemed to have the same idea, except for Madoka. She just stood horrified at the side watching the whole scene unfold.
Kyoko reached the grief seed first. She bent down to pick it up, but something blasted her from behind, throwing her forward and away from the grief seed. Kyoko sat up slowly, wincing as she stared upwards. A figure, outlined by sunlight was standing before her, a gun pointed at her chest, at her soul gem.
"Please, Homura, no!" Mami's voice screamed, as she shot at Homura's gun, knocking it out of her hand. Homura responded immediately, pulling out a bomb and throwing it swiftly at Mami.
"Homura-chan, don't!" Madoka cried out, too late to stop anything, as the bomb exploded right at Mami's feet, her scream of pain echoing through the air.
Mami's scream echoed within Kyoko's head, as she sat there, stunned. Sayaka was at Mami's side immediately.
"Mami, hang in there, please!" She begged, but it was useless. Mami whimpered in pain, her legs were gone, and her lower body bled as well. Blood pooled around her, and there was no way she could heal, not with such damage to her body. Her soul gem slowly began to cloud and darken.
"Please...Just kill me," Mami begged, tears filling up her eyes. "I don't want to turn into a witch. I can't heal, not like this."
Sayaka's face was full of pain.
"I can't!" She cried out. Kyoko got up, and faced Homura, angry now.
"Why are you doing this?" She shouted angrily,"We shouldn't be fighting each other!" Homura regarded her coolly.
"I'm pretty surprised to hear that, coming from you, Kyoko Sakura. You have been fighting other magical girls for ages, over a grief seed." Kyoko couldn't reply to that. Homura suddenly disappeared, reappearing far away, too far to be shot or chased after. Not that Kyoko wanted to chase her, she was more preoccupied with what was happening to Mami. She walked over slowly, wincing as every step jolted her body.
"I'm sorry, Mami," Sayaka whispered, raising her sword, ready to bring it down, onto Mami's flower-shaped soul gem. All Kyoko saw on Mami's face was relief, as her soul gem shattered.
"Thank you."
