Song
By James Joyce
My love is in a light attire
Among the apple trees,
Where the gay winds do most desire
To run in companies.
There, where the gay winds stay to woo
The young leaves as they pass,
My love goes slowly, bending to
Her shadow on the grass.
And where the sky's a pale blue cup
Over the laughing land,
My love goes lightly, holding up
Her dress with dainty hand.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
I would like to direct this message to all Pub members but mostly to our newer members. In judging our January and February contests, our judges were thrilled to see new names, it is always wonderful to see new people at the Pub and a great pleasure to read their entries. However, it is heartbreaking when a poem stands out and our judges want to choose it as a wining poem, only to find out that the author has not answered any of the comments made on their poem.
For anyone who does not understand this, we have a very few rules here at the Pub but, one that is absolute, and will get your poem disqualified every time, is that you must answer the comments on your poem. We feel like if someone is going to take the time to not only read your poem, but comment on it as well, the least you can do to acknowledge that comment. Now if you have five comments on your poem and you answer four of them, we understand that sometimes even the best of us can miss a comment. However, when we find a poem has five comments and none of the comments have been answered we have no choice but to disqualify that poem.
This rule is mentioned in our book "Behind the Bar" that outlines all of the Pub's guidelines and it is always mentioned multiple times in every contest. Please remember, that when someone comments on your work, they in essence are giving you a gift, please take the time to thank them for that gift.

A Poetic History of St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day is quickly approaching. Soon everyone will be dawning green clothing, drinking Shamrock shakes, eating four leaf clover cookies and celebrating this spring holiday that has its roots in Ireland. There are many popular, cultural icons associated with this religious holiday; four leaf clovers, leprechauns, and the saying "The Luck of the Irish" are all strongly connected to St. Patrick's Day. The secular folklore of Ireland has wrapped itself around St. Patrick's Day and made it the holiday that we now enjoy each March 17th. In all actuality it is only the clover that has any true ties to St. Patrick.
St. Patrick is one of the patron saints of Ireland, who lived around the 5th century. There are many myths that surround the history of St. Patrick. However, what is known, is that he was an English born Catholic, that came to Ireland with the intent to convert and comfort the natives of Ireland. It is believed that Patrick was the victim of Irish pirates, having been kidnapped at the age of 16 only to escape his captors years later to return home and enter the clergy. He served as a bishop in Northern Ireland and became a beloved icon of the time.
As far as myths go, it is said that during one of his evangelical teachings, he thrust his ash walking stick into the ground and it took root and grew into a tree. One of the most famous myths about St. Patrick is that he drove out all of the snakes from Ireland after he was attacked by snakes while fasting and praying. (However, the actual geological and biological evidence shows that there have never been snakes in Ireland.)
Here are a few verses of a poem that chronical the "snake slayer" myth of St. Patrick:
"A Legend Of St. Patrick"
By Alexander Anderson
I heard this old legend a few days ago—
A legend so quaint
Of Ireland's saint,
That to lighten my time
I have put it in rhyme,
Just to see how it looks with the lines all a-row.
When St Patrick, that worthy dear man, came to see
How the reptiles polluted his darling 'conthree,'
He determined to stamp them, so set out with glee
To hunt them with curses until they should flee
To less favour'd nations over the sea,
Where they might rest their feet,
Safe in some snug retreat,
And have leisure to cool themselves down from their heat,
And make moral reflections on life being sweet.
As always, I am eternally grateful for your gift of time, spending it here at the Pub. Thank you for the kindness you share and the love that you freely spread among out members. It is because of all of you that the Pub has been come a shining star in a sometimes dark world.
Remember to... keep those pens and keyboards flying!!
Cheers from you Mystres of Chatter
