Pub Chatter 7th Edition - March 21, 2021
WELCOME TO THE PUB-VERSE
Spring
By Gerard Manley Hopkins
Nothing is so beautiful as Spring –
When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;
Thrush's eggs look little low heavens, and thrush
Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring
The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing;
The glassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush
The descending blue; that blue is all in a rush
With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling.
What is all this juice and all this joy?
A strain of the earth's sweet being in the beginning
In Eden garden. – Have, get, before it cloy,
Before it cloud, Christ, lord, and sour with sinning,
Innocent mind and Mayday in girl and boy,
Most, O maid's child, thy choice and worthy the winning.

A Poetic History of St. Patrick's Day
Everyone wants to find luck; everyone wants to have luck and it is a common to hear the term "The Luck of the Irish" at this time of the year. It is interesting to note that this term does not have its origins in Ireland. This is a term that was coined in America during the "gold rush" days. Evidently the Irish immigrants and Irish-Americans were skilled miners and prospered greatly during the gold rush. This is when the "luck" of the Irish came about and was in all reality more of a derogatory term, implying that the Irish only found gold through "dumb luck". Even though this particular saying did not originate in Ireland there are many famous sayings from the emerald isle that talk about the "luck of the Irish", here are just a few:
May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.
********************************************
For each petal on the shamrock
This brings a wish your way
Good health, good luck, and happiness
For today and every day.
********************************************
May the leprechauns be near you,
To spread luck along your way.
And may all the Irish angels,
Smile upon you St. Patrick's Day.
As you can see in these sayings, the shamrock, luck, leprechauns and St. Patrick all go hand in hand. They are intertwined throughout the history of Ireland.
Welcome to Spring!! I think all of us are ready for the welcoming renewal of life that springtime brings! The sounds, sights and smells of the renewing of life, green grass, tweeting birds, backyard barbeques. I hope everyone has time to enjoy this wonderous time of year!!
Remember to... keep those pens and keyboards flying!!
Cheers from you Mystres of Chatter
