WELCOME TO THE PUB-VERSE

The Fairies
By William Allingham

Up the airy mountain,
Down the rushy glen,
We daren't go a-hunting
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together;
Green jacket, red cap,
And white owl's feather!

Down along the rocky shore
Some make their home,
They live on crispy pancakes
Of yellow tide-foam;
Some in the reeds
Of the black mountain-lake,
With frogs for their watchdogs,
All night awake.

High on the hill-top
The old King sits;
He is now so old and grey
He's nigh lost his wits.
With a bridge of white mist
Columbkill he crosses,
On his stately journeys
From Slieveleague to Rosses;
Or going up with the music
On cold starry nights,
To sup with the Queen
Of the gay Northern Lights.

They stole little Bridget
For seven years long;
When she came down again
Her friends were all gone.
They took her lightly back,
Between the night and morrow,
They thought that she was fast asleep,
But she was dead with sorrow.
They have kept her ever since
Deep within the lake,
On a bed of fig-leaves,
Watching till she wake.

By the craggy hillside,
Through the mosses bare,
They have planted thorn trees
For my pleasure, here and there.
Is any man so daring
As dig them up in spite,
He shall find their sharpest thorns
In his bed at night.

Up the airy mountain,
Down the rushy glen,
We daren't go a-hunting
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together;
Green jacket, red cap,
And white owl's feather!

A Poetic History of St. Patrick's Day

The clover or shamrock does have strong ties to St. Patrick.  It is said that Patrick liked to teach with parables and metaphors, one such metaphor was the clover.  Patrick likened the three leaves of the cover attached to one stem, to the trinity of God.  The leaves representing God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit all attached to one stem which represented the three God heads as one being.

The clover or shamrock and the four-leaf clover have always been important symbols in lexicon of Irish history.  Each leaf of the clover is said to represent a different attribute, love, hope and faith.  If you are "lucky" enough to find a four-leaf clover, (there is only a one in 10,000 chance), the fourth leaf represents luck.  Here is a beautiful example of a poem about the shamrock:

Four-Leaf Clover
By Ella Higginson

I know a place where the sun is like gold,
   And the cherry blooms burst with snow,
And down underneath is the loveliest nook,
   Where the four-leaf clovers grow.

One leaf is for hope, and one is for faith,
   And one is for love, you know,
And God put another in for luck—
   If you search, you will find where they grow.

But you must have hope, and you must have faith,
   You must love and be strong – and so—
If you work, if you wait, you will find the place
      Where the four-leaf clovers grow.

Another week has come and gone, time flies and memories are made, thank you all for being a part of the history and timeline of the Poets Pub.  We look forward to making more history with each of you!! I hope everyone has a super-duper, fantastic week ahead!!

Remember to... keep those pens and keyboards flying!!

Cheers from you Mystres of Chatter
