WELCOME TO THE PUB-VERSE
2021 PUB CHATTER
Welcome to 2021 and the 7th Edition of the Pub Chatter!!
HOLY SMOKES!!! WE MADE IT THROUGH 2020!!! HIP, HIP, HOORAY!!!
HAPPY, HAPPY NEW YEAR, TO ONE AND ALL!!
We have some new things planned for this year at the Pub. One if the new collections that I am really excited about is "Published by Pubbers". I had meant to get this going last year but...well you know how 2020 went! This is going to be a collection that will feature Pubbers that have published books, whether they have self-published them or published them through a publishing company, we want to help promote them. So, if you know of or you yourself have published a book, send us a Private Message and I will get you the form you need to fill out to be featured in this collection.
The Epic of Gilgamesh (excerpt)
Translated by Maureen Gallery
KovacsElectronic Edition by Wolf Carnahan, I998
Tablet I
He who has seen everything, I will make known (?) to the lands.
I will teach (?) about him who experienced all things, ... alike,
Anu granted him the totality of knowledge of all.
He saw the Secret, discovered the Hidden,
he brought information of (the time) before the Flood.
He went on a distant journey, pushing himself to exhaustion,
but then was brought to peace.
He carved on a stone stela all of his toils,
and built the wall of Uruk-‐Haven,
the wall of the sacred Eanna Temple, the holy sanctuary.
Look at its wall which gleams like copper(?),
inspect its inner wall, the likes of which no one can equal!
Take hold of the threshold stone-‐-‐it dates from ancient times!
Go close to the Eanna Temple, the residence of Ishtar,
such as no later king or man ever equaled!
Go up on the wall of Uruk and walk around,
examine its foundation, inspect its brickwork thoroughly.
Is not (even the core of) the brick structure made of kiln-‐fired brick,
and did not the Seven Sages themselves lay out its plans?
One league city, one league palm gardens, one league lowlands, the open area(?) of
the Ishtar Temple,
three leagues and the open area(?) of Uruk it (the wall) encloses.
Find the copper tablet box,
open the ... of its lock of bronze,
undo the fastening of its secret opening.
Take and read out from the lapis lazuli tablet
how Gilgamesh went through every hardship.

December Challenge:
Our December Challenge is now closed, and we will be announcing a winner soon. We will also have a new challenge for you soon!!
This year I thought it might be fun to explore the history of poetry, looking at where poetry started, how it has evolved and those poets who have been most influential in the world of poetry.
Of course, poetry and song lyrics, being two sides of the same coin, both can be traced back to the earliest forms of communication.
Before any words were ever written down, we were entertaining one another with songs and tales of heroic deeds, terrifying monsters and love lost and found. Oral poetry is the earliest form of the poetic art.
However, the oldest written poem, that we know of, is the "Epic of Gilgamesh," that is believed to have first appeared as early as the third millennium B.C. This mythical tale of the Sumerian king Gilgamesh, is filled with his heroic deeds, adventures, and knowledge, describing him as being one-third man and two-thirds god. (1) An excerpt of this poem can be found in the "Featured Poem" section above. This poem is thought to have started out as oral history and, as forms of written documentation were invented, it was recorded on clay tables.
As you can see the history of poetry is rich and an intracule part of our lives from the beginning of time. We will be exploring more of our oldest poetic works through out the month of January.
