XIII: Lines: 837-924 The Bard's Praise
Excerpt Lines – 856 – 871

They proclaimed Beowulf's glory.
Never, they said, to north or south,
Between the two seas, under the sky,
Or on the wide earth, was there ever
A better shield-man of finer kingdom.
Yet they laid no blame on Hrothgar,
Friend and lord. He was a good king.
At times, when the track-way suited,
And was sound, the warriors raced,
Galloping their red-haired horses,
In contest. At times, the king's thane
Full of eloquence, a bearer of song,
Who knew many tales out of ancient
Tradition, composed fresh words,
In a true metre. And the man began
To recite with skill, Beowulf's deeds;

The Rickety Stage rolled into town and cheers and friendly smiles met Whip Cracker. Deliveries were made to a few of the townsfolk. Whip Cracker soon left BG once again and would come back dressed in red for the holidays. Lady heard Bella reaching out to her and made ruckus in her stable. When Petra let her out, she made a swift getaway to Carson City.

January Challenge:
We hope to have a new challenge for you soon!!

POETIC HISTORY: Beowulf

As we move forward in the history of poetry, one of the most famous and historic poems is the oldest surviving English poem Beowulf.  This epic poem tells the heroic tale of the protagonist, Beowulf, and his harrowing battle to defeat the monster Grendel.  Set in Scandinavia, Beowulf answers the call for help of the Danish king, Hrothgar, to defend his kingdom from the joyless monster Grendel.

The actual date of this poem is still in question.  Scholars are fairly certain that the manuscript was produced some time between 975 and 1025 AD.  The only surviving full manuscript, known as the Nowell Codex, is housed in the British Library.

As for the poem itself there is quite a bit of debate on when it was actually composed.  It is believed to have been an oral poem originally, with many references to Anglo-Saxon Paganism, which would date it around 700 A.D.  While other scholars believe there is enough evidence within the poem to give it an even earlier date.  Other clues as to the date may come from the two scribes that translated it.  Because of the very different and distinct styles of the two scribes, it is believed that they may have been putting their own interpretation on the poem enhanced by their own knowledge of the oral poem. You can get a taste for this epic tale above.  The excerpt above is that of a bard singing of the heroic victory of Beowulf and his men.

I hope everyone is settled into the new year.  Let us look back and learn from our mistakes as we move forward and create new paths to follow, armed with hope and determination to make our world a better place for ourselves and those that come after us.

And remember to keep those pens and keyboards flying!!

Cheers from you Mystres of Chatter
