Nineteen
"Princess?" Laurent called from the kitchen, peeking his head out of the entryway.
"Yeah?" Alana called, straining her voice a little bit.
"Do you want eggs? I don't know if you like them," he said, his eyes landing on her as she spoke. He could see a small smile forming on her face as her eyes stayed fixated on the TV, and she chuckled a little before answering him.
"I like eggs, Laurent," she grinned. A warm smile graced his face and he stared at her for a few more seconds before turning back into the kitchen. Laurent knew he wasn't perfect. He knew that he had a lot of shit wrong with him, and that there was nothing he could do to change all of it, but the least he could do for his babygirl was make her some breakfast. She went through a lot yesterday, and he couldn't even tell what she was feeling most of the time. He noticed that she would be distant sometimes, and drift off into her own little world.
He also noticed that she even flinched when he tried to kiss her cheek or play with her hair. It actually pained him seeing her like that, and if making breakfast for her was one step closer to getting his bubbly girl back, then he'd do it one hundred times. It wasn't like she could fix it herself anyway. She was still weak. He had to help her to the bathroom a few times, and she threw up at least twice.
Seeing his girl so weak and ruined made him cry more than once, but he didn't let her see it. She didn't even know he cried after the talk they had in her room no more than three hours ago. But he did. How could someone hurt a person like her?
As Laurent began to cook the eggs, he thought back to when he first arrived at the hospital. He had so much anger and rage built up in him that he couldn't even explain what it was like to be sad. He despised everyone in that place, including Alana. When he first saw her, she was the most vulnerable thing he'd ever seen. She had an innocent look on her face, as if she only ever meant good. She had her hair pulled back into the neatest ponytail, and her uniform was spotless. He could always tell how intimidated she was by him. She let it show quite a few times, and yet she was still nice to him. She wasn't like the other nurses who threw his food at him and talked down to him.
She let him talk to her, and tell her about why he was the way he was. He always doubted that she'd understand him, but she did, and she never once used it against him. Now there he was, in her kitchen making her eggs and bacon while she watched TV in her living room.
He couldn't help the smile that grew on his face as he thought about her, and he quickly finished making her breakfast, putting everything onto one plate for her. He grabbed two plastic forks from her cupboards and he put them on the plates, sighing contently. He grabbed his plate and hers and he carried them to the living room, Alana's eyes landing on him.
"Here you go, princess," he said sweetly, handing her the plate.
"Thank you," she smiled, taking the plate from him. "And thank you for making breakfast."
"You don't have to thank me," he said. "I do it with love."
Alana smiled and she began to eat her breakfast, her eyes flicking back to the TV screen. Laurent sat down next to her, looking at the TV as well, frowning at the cartoons displayed on it. There was a mermaid sitting in a rock, singing something about a new world, sparking Laurent's confusion.
"What is this?" He asked as he stepped his food.
"It's The Little Mermaid," Alana replied. "You've never watched it before?"
"Nope," he shrugged. "I don't like cartoons."
Alana frowned and she glanced over at him, giving him a shocked look. A slight pain slivered through her but she ignored it, having gotten used to feeling pain from even the slightest movements.
"Have you ever watched any Disney movie before?"
"Disney?" He asked, looking at her in confusion. "What's that?"
Alana damn near choked on her bacon as she looked at him wide eyed, her jaw falling open.
"You've never watched any Disney movie ever?"
Laurent shook his head slowly and Alana scoffed, but instantly regretted it as an ache spread through her midsection a little bit.
"I'm starting this over," she said, proceeding to rewind the entire movie. "And then we're going to watch every Disney classic I can find."

"This the most stupid thing I ever see in my life," Laurent muttered, running a hand over his face.
"How is it stupid? It's love at first kiss!" Alana said, gesturing towards the TV just a little.
"It make no sense, though! And why wasn't the guys with her when the witch come to the house?"
"Uh, hello? They were dwarves, they had labor to do, Laurent."
"Oh, so they all just go work outside? Nobody in the house with her?"
"No, but even if they were there they couldn't save her. Snow White is really nice, so when a witch offers her the apple, of course she's going to eat it!"
"Why she take food from a stranger. And the prince just save her? With a stupid kiss?"
"I don't know, and yes he did."
"So you tell me if I take a apple from someone and die and you kiss me, I come back to life?"
"Well, no, but -"
"Exactly. I rest my case."
"Your argument is invalid because it's fiction. He saved her by kissing her, and that's it."
"So anyone can go to the glass and kiss her?"
"No! Ugh."
"So what make him special, Alana? He has magic touch or something?"
"Shut up."
"You know I'm right."
Alana didn't say anything after that, and she let out a huff. She rolled her eyes irately and she continued to flick through the different movies, trying to find one that they didn't watch yet. A smug grin appeared on Laurent's face and he rubbed her leg softly, clicking his tongue.
"You need to bring out your inner child," she muttered. "Not everything is logical."
"That's how I think, baby," he responded, chuckling at her change of attitude. She mumbled under her breath and he grinned, reaching over to brush his thumb against her face. Instinctively, she flinched away from his touch, her face contorting a little bit. Laurent felt a sadness stabbing at his heart, washing over his entire body when she did and he drew his hand back, looking away from her.
"I'm sorry," she said quietly, a short sigh leaving her lips.
"Can you be honest with me?" He asked, clenching his jaw a little bit.
"Yes," she said.
"Do you think I will hurt you?"
Alana looked down at the couch, her eyes rows furrowing slightly. When she didn't answer, Laurent could already feel his heart dropping lower and lower.
"Alana," he said again. "Do you think I will hurt you?"
"I don't know," she answered timidly. Laurent let out a dry laugh, and he threw his head back, curling his lips inward.
"I'll take that as a yes."
"No," Alana responded. "It's not a yes. It's just, after what Matthew did, I -"
"So I am Matthew now?" He asked bitterly, sitting up and turning to her slightly.
Alana looked over at him and she frowned, trying to sit up a little bit. "No, you're not Matthew. I just get scared whenever you try to touch me. I don't know whether or not you'll hurt me."
Laurent scoffed and he looked at her in disbelief, trying to comprehend the words that just left her mouth and passed through his mind. She didn't bother to look back at him, her mind racing with different things she could say to make the situation better, but there wasn't any. She assumed that he had it out for her just like Matthew no more than thirty seconds ago, and by the look on Laurent's face, she knew that she couldn't take back her words just like that.
"I change for you," Laurent said, looking directly into the eyes that failed to meet his. "Do you even care? That I change?"
"I do, I'm just scared," she replied. "What if you go back to the way you were when we first met? Violent and angry?"
"You..." he said. "You think that after this whole thing, with us, that I go back to that now? You bring out the best in me, and I'm more happy than I ever was. You think I will mess this up now?"
Alana didn't answer him and he shook his head as he stood up, looking at anything but her.
"Where are you going?" She asked, looking up at him from her spot on the couch.
"I'm going to think," he replied. "Because it seem like I'm not doing nothing right."
"Laurent -"
"When I find out what I did, I will be better next time, I promise."
She watched helplessly as he walked out of the living room, running a hand through his twists. He went the opposite direction of her room, heading towards the guest room. Alana sighed and she covered her face, a few tears slipping out if her eyes.
"I'm sorry," she said to herself, shutting her eyes. She stared blankly at the TV screen for the longest, and it wasn't long before she found herself drifting off into a painful sleep filled with images of her and Laurent painting the walls in her mind.
